How did this incentive sneak through the MLB Lockout?

I would add that writers also choose the MLB Pipeline, ESPN and Baseball America Top 100s, and that is who is eligible to be promoted and then earn their team a draft pick if they win one of those awards. So if a writer were to drop a guy off the Top 100 for two editions, or only appear on one, kind of like Yainer Diaz did, then if he had won Rookie of the Year, his team would not have gotten that incentive. So writers also can influence it in that way.

Yeah.. I'd be kind of pissed if I were Brice Turang, and a one tool first baseman for the Padres took my second base All-Star slot.

I’m assuming that the reason that teams are rewarded with a draft pick and not a specific player reward is that the inherent player reward is being called up and not having their service time manipulated

Every time I hear Merrill and Skenes mentioned, I'm going to mention Chourio. He absolutely deserves to be in the same breath as those other guys.. yet no one seems to care about him. Is it because the Brewers are in a small market?! Are YOU perpetuating this anti-small market narrative?!? ;)

What are you even talking about lmao San Diego and Pittsburgh are not large media markets. Milwaukee and subsequently Chourio get plenty of press because they are leading their division. The reason Skenes is talked about is because he is literally a generational talent like a kershaw or Verlander, and the reason Merrill is talked about is his insane clutch ability to carry a team to a win. Chourio is nuts too but it doesn’t feel the same

Writers generally don't like service time manipulation. This could be a small factor in tipping the scales if the Skenes vs Merrill comparison was closer for example.

It's nickel and dime stuff, imagine how much a small business' value would increase if 20 national writers reported on their every move, every day.

They could have chosen a better way to incentivize teams to call up prospects without manipulating time for maximum years of team control. Maybe not even incentivize, how about changing the rules - meaning if you are calling up a prospect it's more of a commitment? Only issue with that is the replacement level guys who get bounced around between aaa/mlb as the team needs them. Only thing I can say for certain - it's tough to come up a with a fair and equitable solution and at least they are trying.

That had to be the result of a compromise over another item. These days writers are not as close as they were back in the day.

The power that writers have over MLB has always seemed odd to me. Why are they the people who get to decide who is in the hall? This goes back to before games were broadcast and writers were the only ones who followed teams around. I would argue broadcasters see more ball than writers now, or he'll even Jolly Olive, I'd rather he or Chris Rose have a vote.

I think that with the kind of information writers have and the access to the players on the teams I'd think that it'd require a certain level of integrity. In my opinion, a writer that'd take a bribe for their vote would bring some locker room drama, it's just who they are, shit seems to follow them; and it'd be a great way to lose access to a world that has been good to them. Not worth it

This is what happened with movies with Miramax when Weinstein lobbied for Oscars and all of a sudden his movies were winning tons of oscars, now we have some shit movie winning best picture instead of Saving Private Ryan.

Soooo any team can just bring up thier best prospect, ready or not, & just play them & get an extra draft pick…that does NOTTT seem right for the player.
