so if i wanted a non-metallic marine, word bearers' red would be used as a base, what would some highlights be? I'm thinking either khorne red or just mephiston red
That sounds like a good plan! Khorne Red is quite dark and close to Word Bearers Red. I would probably go for Mephiston Red like you said, if you want the highlight to pop a it more. Maybe even a second selective highlight of Evil Sunz Scarlet or something?
Once again. The Word Bearers Legion is grey and gold. The red and silver is reserved for the Gal'Vorbak. Which after the Drop Site Massacre there were only 5 left alive and are considered the original possesed
For what it's worth, in the Dan Abnett novel 'Know no Fear' the Ultramarines are surprised to see the new-look red armoured Word Bearers at the muster on Calth. This suggests that the red armour was becoming widespread in the legion (at least) just prior to the betrayal. I must be a real sadatron for knowing this.

Like all right thinking people, I hate Lorgar's gang of freaks - but this tutorial is awesome.

The 30k pre-heresy armour is definitely cool 👍 but I prefer the red and silver from the John Blanche 2nd edition artwork 😎
I always just assumed post monarchia burning and calth they adopted that red and black because that’s how most of the art depicts them
