Agreed, some of the most brilliant people don't seem to be able to explain their process or their artform with any clarity. It's kind of odd, but Del Toro ain't got that problem.

As Del Toro was recommending Jane Eyre, I was wishing he had just gone ahead and recommended I Walked With a Zombie, so I was delighted a minute later when he did just that. Those Val Lewton films are favorites of mine, and I Walked with a Zombie is a somewhat neglected gem (probably because the title is terrible). While you're at it, fire up Cat People and The Seventh Victim if you've never seen them.

Of course Del Toro likes Bava... I bet he likes Argento as well. He is a master of horror, someone said he could have directed The Hobbit and if that's true we REALLY missed out. Especially with riddles in the dark scene from the book that was masterfully done in the 1977 cartoon. That with the orcs, wolves, and spiders... man that would have been something!

Other than maybe Scorsese, I don't think there's a director so knowledgeable about the history of film, and astute in his judgement. The Ring, also called "The Drop Of Water," is the third act of Mario Bava's 1963 film, Black Sabbath. What Guillermo was referring to was a film that basically consists of three short films in one, with Boris Karloff introducing all three and starring in one as well. It's a classic, and I definitely recommend it.

"Joan Fontaine - the perfect Jane." Oh, no! Guillermo! Have you never read the danged book?! Jane is supposed to be mousy, plain, kind of odd. Joan Fontaine was a great beauty! I love that movie, but the whole thing is so horribly miscast that I watch it despite its casting, not because of it!

Could not disagree more. Joan Fontaine was very attractive, even beautiful, but by the Hollywood standards of the day, glamour-wise she was no Hedy Lamarr, Rita Hayworth or Gene Tierney. And to not like Orson Welles as the original incarnation of Mr Rochester ??? Words fail.

I agree with you about disliking the casting. The one time I tried to watch the film, I thought Welles and Fontaine were horribly mismatched. Welles's acting style was so much more naturalistic than Fontaine's -- she was too affected for my taste. I actually turned the movie off. Given del Toro's recommendation, though, I'm willing to give it another shot.

shouldn’t one have directed at least one watchable film to suggest them?
