Possession doesn’t mean anything if you’re just passing sideways. Spain under Enrique had immense possession, had 1,000 pass games where they scored 1 goal or none at all. Some teams are built to play against possession based team. I saw a stat a year or two ago that Bayern Munich had less possession than opponents on 17 games and won 16 of them. Madrid planned this time not to let City have chances on the box, and they were successful. Over the two legs city only had two free shot in the box, both by KdB today. it's the same with Sir Alex and Don Carlo. These modern day blind Pep fans try to discredit them, when in fact their teams were more tactically flexible and well setup to play all styles of football unlike Guardiola's one-dimensional robotic style of play.
For once I thought that only I learnt how effective Kroos's off ball movement was. Damn he kept us in that match for most of the first half, Akanji and KDB both looked dangerous but Kroos did his best, one thing I thought I saw (I'm not sure cause I saw it only once) is that Cama came into that pocket to cover Akanji's run meaning that Bernardo was free for some time but he will be closely tracked by either Fede or Cama himself. Again meaning that Carva and Grealish were on for that 1v1.
Kroos is and has always been massively underated. His signing was overshadowed by the James Rodriguez signing but I knew the best signing that window was Kroos. He doesn't stand out but he does what is needed. His resume speaks for itself. World Class player.
Jude was playing a very interesting role in that match, he was a attacking midfielder with a defensive mindset. Not in a bad way at all, he was just making the midfield unplayable. He was tackling high up the pitch which made it seem like Real Madrid had more players up front. Brilliant player and tactic, he did say that he was required to play a different role in that match on the post interview and it kinda confirmed what I was seeing during the match.
Jude has been playing different roles lately. He plays slightly deeper now and less runs in behind like earlier in the season. And then this City game, almost like pressing target man. A player that any manager would love to have.
I also marvel at how well ancelotti and his players keep calm when playing out of possession. Not touching the ball all game is one of the most frustrating things for most players. To stay that alert in defense and that precise 9n the counter attack as a team is something that goes overlooked in ancelotti as a manager. I've seen few teams absorb pressure so well
people need to realize that Real Madrid was never going to the Etihad Stadium to dominate possession whatsoever. Ancelotti knew he needed to score first and he did with Rodrygo; if Madrid hadn't scored first, then there would have been no way that this team would come back. Ancelotti played around with Pep's tactics. City having like 70% possession meant nothing if everything they did with the ball was sideways or backward. For Ancelotti, he dictated City's style of play with his defensive structure and player movements. Yes, I agree that it looked disgusting to watch, but Ancelotti dictated the play for tonight's game. He was never going to play like last year when we lost 4-0 and he made the field open for City. In fact, all those goals for City came from central positions where Real Madrid's defense was dissected through the middle. This year, he blocked the middle of the park, which is where City thrives and gave them the wings. Ancelotti was playing around with Pep without Pep even knowing. This was a typical "You take the ball and play with it, but I won't give you a chance to penetrate and expose me" situation. Even City's goal today came from a lucky rebound back to De Bruyne. Other than that, City just passes the ball amongst each other with no real threat most of time. It felt like they kept the ball for 5 minutes for each attack and nothing happened. I don't know why people are pissed at the fact that Ancelotti didn't expand his team and make the game so open. He knew that the only way to beat City was by closing down the midfield and forcing them sideways. Then, it becomes a training ground drill of pressure and cover for the players. The agenda that City dominated was due to Ancelotti giving City the ball for the entire game, knowing well that he can control the way City attacks with his defensive structure. It was working the whole game but eventually, the ball rebounds in the path of a City player for a goal. Other than that, Ancelotti coached a defensive masterclass that City struggled all night to break down. Let's not forget, the same thing happened in the 3-3 game where City just passed the ball sideways and rarely created chances. In the 1st leg, they only scored through goals from outside the 18-yard box. Today, the exact same thing happened but Madrid had less possession than in the 1st leg. The only difference is that City never shot from a distance. Over the 2 legs, City could only really create scoring chances by shooting from outside the 18-yard box. We need to give a lot of credit to Ancelotti because he basically nullified City's passing through the midfield lines and forced City to play a boring sideways passing game over the 2 legs. Once again, Real Madrid controlled the game by not having the ball since their defensive shape dictated that game and Real Madrid was content since they were making City do what they wanted them to do. That is to pass the ball sideways and backward and not penetrate through the midfield.
"Ancelotti was playing around with Pep without Pep even knowing" lmao ofc he knew what Ancelotti was doing. He parked the bus just like everyone else this season.
Well said. Many People thought that having high possession means dominance, which is not the case. Dominating a game is based on what a team do when they are having the ball possession and what they do without ball possession. In this case, Real Madrid did very well in handling Man City's threat.
I would add one more. Ancelotti took advantage of Pep’s weaknesses: set pieces and penetration into the penalty box. Real Madrid was not scared to give away 18 corners while they received only one corner. He pushed City Players move to the wings and prevented the passes coming from the central areas. City could not make any single effective cross into the box.
Papa Carlo laid it all out plainly: the opening match saw both teams scoring unlikely goals, resulting in a defensive-free clash, especially surprising on Spanish soil. Fortunately, it ended in a 3:3 draw. Similar to last year, Real was penalized for their open style of play. In contrast, yesterday’s game was a cautious affair from the start. Why risk an aggressive strategy only to potentially concede 2-3 goals to City by the 30th minute? Such a scenario would have been perfect for Pep, but he was denied that pleasure. A defensive approach was planned from the outset, and a quick goal scored early validated this strategy. With a quiet but solid defense, leading the score, and the occasional counterattack. Walker dominated Viney, showcasing why he might be the best full-back currently, that's why counter attacks were not seen from RM. Meanwhile, Rodrigo capitalized on a key opportunity. Real maintained a low profile, while City, despite their sophistication, managed only one goal following Rudy's error. All their intricate passing and numerous corners yielded no significant results. The questions are straightforward: either defeat Real Madrid and move to the semi-finals, or fail to do so and see Real advance. Lunin also deserves praise for his exceptional performance yesterday. The game unfolded clearly, fairly, and naturally. City pushed the pace to the max, but Real kept up.

I'd say ancelloti deserved an 8 and Pep deserved an 8 as well, Pep was unlucky but Ancelloti's tactics were deadly and fiercely utilised. Kinda underrated imo
I think the thing is Madrid players are willing to do anything to get the win, without complaining, even if it includes running during the whole game, or giving the back to their identity and have 11 players inside the box
Even on the counters in the second half, if Madrid felt that the would lose the ball during the conters with more of their players being up top, they prefferred playing it back, which showed scoring more goals was never in the plan. Ancelotti just wanted an early lead and settle on it throughout the game. In which he succeeded.👏

They had full control of the midfield, courtesy of Haaland's doing nothing and KDB giving away the ball.
@@anmolshaw3603 No he doesn't, Premier League teams barely oark the bus, Pep outclassed Ancelotti yesterday tactically... and the point of parking the bus is to stop opposition from creating chances and City created a number of chances plus a goal so the 7.5/6.5 rating seems more accurate than yours
didn't understand why doku wasn't brought in sooner and why he didn't play in the first game, grealish is a great player but playing against such a closed real you need someone that can dribble and also put balls in the box, as also another thing i don't understand is why city don't put more crosses in box having a beast like haaland as almost all the times they move the ball out wide to foden and grealish they would just pass it back always trying to crack throught the center.
😂😂😂 anyone noticed how Ancelloti tactic board looks clean and neat and he just dragged the one dart straight up the board to the opposition post. contrast that to peps, looks quite complicated and clumsy and takes so much zest to explain it. Moral lesson being when you are on an ancelloti team, ditch the complex tactical jargons and depend on your intuition and personal abilities, keep it simple(after all being a player in a team called galaticos puts you on a different level right from the get go).
It wouldn't have made a difference. KDB and Haaland singlehandedly surrendered the control of the midfield. Starting Doku just to run into players would've been suicide. The goal was a mistake on Ruidger's part

The most creative and offensively capable team in the world (along with Leverkusen) against the team that plays best in transition in the world. I think the plans materialized quickly with that goal from Rodrygo, but between the 30th minute and the equalizer there was very little offensively to counter City's momentum. But it must be understood that physically it is highly exhausting to go through an entire game + overtime with less possession of the ball. On City's side, there was a lack of ideas (too many crosses) and Akanji, despite having given a lot of security in reacting to the loss of the ball, didn't add as much with the ball as Stones, who last season was for several moments a defensive pivot/regista. Real Madrid's goal was also created because Ancelotti, like Luis Enrique yesterday, did not leave his most explosive player on the wing, without space, against a more defensive full-back. It allowed Vinicius to be a striker attacking the opposing defensive line, causing instability due to the way he moved through spaces.
Love Pep, but his stubbornness, hubris and inability to adapt his absurd high line - that’s been an issue all season - is what allowed RM to win. 3:4 goals RM scored were on the counter down the right side where City had been having issue all season. Remember, last season Pep adapted and played a conservative flat back 4 away at RM and then a more attacking posture with a back 3 at home when City won 4-0. This season, he played a back 2 in both games which was suicidal, especially against the best counter attacking team in the world. I really wonder if he will learn from it (doubtful since even a blind person could see the issues which had been a consistent problem all season in the PL, and yet he did it anyway).
Good points! In champions league, Real Madrid is incomparable. Pep & City are great but they need to work on how to deal with the after 90min. Hala Madrid hasta el final & Hard luck Citizens.
Tbh Ancelotti beat Pep because of the penalty missed by the city players.City played better football that night while Madrid defend with 10 men.If city win the match you would have been saying Pep is a genius who beat Ancelotti.
possesion is the best weapon if... you have Messi, or if you are 2008 Spanish team... and in any case... not always work with this. All other teams, need to be smarter.
Real madrid are lethal in attack, but now they proved they can be lethal in defending too. Implying they are highly versatile , which is a crucial quality needed in any sport. This is not the first time to predict that city are the favorites to win; 2022 is another example where city had 99% win probability until 90 mins mark. So, its absurd to claim real Madrid had a lucky win, rather than saying its was a strategic gameplay. #Halamadrid
People tend to only think football is attack only. But there are also great teams defending. R. Madrid is the one that can do whatever is best for the win, attack, defend, counter attack, positional, horizontal, vertical... may be is not the best doing any of this. But has the best average. That together with the inmense self conficence makes R. Madrid the greatest in this competition.
As a Madrid fan I thought Carlo will try to apply klopp's tactics Against city but it turned out Diego simione's Peak Atletico Madrid. The ultimate haramball or ladenball😆
You got this one wrong by highlighting short bursts of play. Real were sitting in a low block most of the time that was leaking chances all the time (tho they managed to contain number of big chances). On the other hand city's high press destroyed Real on the ball and they couldn't do anything. The goal came from clearance/long ball that Jude masterfully controlled and managed to make something out of it.
contradict to everyone's though of Ancelotti just relax and let Madrid players cope on their own, I think that this man really went serious. Pep's City is really a beast that he cannot let the team stand the ground or just give ground and endure, he needs a plan to cut the beast's heart. Man City actually has a drawback, I won't say it as a weakness since it only is inferior to other features, they are not very good dealing with teams who has players that can handle aerial duels with comfort. To do that, that player must be smart to know how to cleverly shield the ball from the coming defender and pivot, and we are talking about Walker, Dias, Rodri, that player must be something, and he must be very strong and big to hold the defenders off before knocking tha ball for the coming runner for a quick counter. Rewind a bit and we can remember Inter Milan did that move very well, the same went to Tottenham when they had Kane, Brentford when they have Ivan Toney, and somewhat Newcastle United at the first matchdays of 22/23. Bellingham's ridiculous move was the pivotal moment to Rodrygo's goal. He held the long ball with both skill and his strong stature , letting the ball fall off his body a bit so that he can have some space passing it to Valverde, and that's history bros.
Pep beat himself by playing it too safe. It was the same it’s been all season “let’s give the ball to our cb’s and hope and pray holes open up” Imagine having a 6’5 striker that’s faster than 95% of cbs and telling him to stand still and wait for a rebound or just draw defenders. The mistake is that they always try to find haaland when the opposition is already in position defensively….just pass the ball to him. He’ll get it
@@jquanclarke1049 I’m not talking about getting him the ball close to him in the box…haaland was surrounded by everyone, because Madrid parked the bus, not just rudiger. I’m talking about sending him the ball when man city are in their own half. Haaland is faster than rudiger
@gabrielguerrero3404 Rüdiger top speed is 36.7 km/h Haaland is 36.1 km/h... Haaland isn't getting past Rudiger. If you want evidence, watch last season's game at the Bernabeu, Rudiger won a short burst foot race.

We had the 2nd best UCL defensive performance ever. 2nd only to our performance in the final 2 years ago. And that plan is a 6.5? And a lower score than the losing manager? So, in your system of grading, an all-time defensive game plan and performance is worth less than a losing offensive plan? Or is it your constant and provable anti Real Madrid bias? Seriously, I'd like to know. If there was a night all season to take humble look at your work before putting out a video, have perspective, and show respect... It would be tonight.
Carvajal spoiled the left side of city, Mendy spoled the right side of city, Kross Kamavinga Valverde ran all field and intercepted citys everything. Nacho was shockingly good and Rudiger was beast as always. End of the story
City could've bury the game if they were been clinical in front of goal!! I think Pep started over thinking as the game approached the end or his players were getting dead leg. At that rate i was wondering who's gonna be the penalty takers cuz his top lieutenants were going off. I think he lost the game based on that.

Nah bro he got dominated in off leg. City just ain't clinical as last year
@@brandonjablasone7544 Yeah, agreed. but I meant in general, not only that game.
it's the same with Sir Alex and Don Carlo.
Perez had already said he is the best and cheapest Madrid signing of his time.

Great analysis!
Don Carlo at its best
"Ancelotti was playing around with Pep without Pep even knowing" lmao ofc he knew what Ancelotti was doing. He parked the bus just like everyone else this season.
Well said. Many People thought that having high possession means dominance, which is not the case. Dominating a game is based on what a team do when they are having the ball possession and what they do without ball possession.
In this case, Real Madrid did very well in handling Man City's threat.
Real also got a deflected goal in the first leg… don’t call that dominance. I love Madrid but winning on pens doesn’t mean outclassing anyone mate lol
I hope you make one on the Arsenal vs Bayern match I love your analyses

anti plan
I would add one more. Ancelotti took advantage of Pep’s weaknesses: set pieces and penetration into the penalty box. Real Madrid was not scared to give away 18 corners while they received only one corner. He pushed City Players move to the wings and prevented the passes coming from the central areas. City could not make any single effective cross into the box.
They were forced to give the corners not scared.
And city tried hard to aim into 6yd box to threaten Lunin and CBs, but they never worked out. All of them were punched away by Lunin easily

They were lucky, City ddidn't score their chances as they have been struggling to score goals this season, but on another day, it is 4:1

Pep did wonders looking at how his team plays football. It's unbelievable from ancceloti's side how they defend and stay control under city high level intense press.
City should've won in the game if they correct some small details in the final end. As well, Madrid might have scored more than one goal if they keep a bit of possession like in the first 20mins throughout the match. I understand city didn't let them do that.

didn't understand why doku wasn't brought in sooner and why he didn't play in the first game, grealish is a great player but playing against such a closed real you need someone that can dribble and also put balls in the box, as also another thing i don't understand is why city don't put more crosses in box having a beast like haaland as almost all the times they move the ball out wide to foden and grealish they would just pass it back always trying to crack throught the center.
What a tactics from Ancelotti 👏🏾

anyone noticed how Ancelloti tactic board looks clean and neat and he just dragged the one dart straight up the board to the opposition post.
contrast that to peps, looks quite complicated and clumsy and takes so much zest to explain it.
Moral lesson being when you are on an ancelloti team, ditch the complex tactical jargons and depend on your intuition and personal abilities, keep it simple(after all being a player in a team called galaticos puts you on a different level right from the get go).
Why did Grealish start? That Doku the Bruyne link up should have been there from the start.
It wouldn't have made a difference. KDB and Haaland singlehandedly surrendered the control of the midfield. Starting Doku just to run into players would've been suicide. The goal was a mistake on Ruidger's part

Arsenal and Chelsea did that this year at the Etihad tho
You mean parked the bus.
City seemed much weaker this season then last season. What would you say was the reason, how do they adapt ?
Gundogan the pivot in attack is absent in this season and clinical winger mahrez has left too. The defence is not how it is used to
Not to mention gundo is their role model/captain, there's no leadership in the current line up, gundo definitely a major loss for city, he's one of the key that they won treble last season@@shashidasari5072
Obviously they miss gundogan one of the key factor in his game is his intellligent movement on the final third also one of the reason Haaland's struggling. Also Defense is shit compared to last season.
Woah. That 4-2-4 was also used by Ten Hag to beat City in FA Cup Final
More ball possession, more accurate passes more shots on goal... nothing will bring a win... unless you find the net

contradict to everyone's though of Ancelotti just relax and let Madrid players cope on their own, I think that this man really went serious.
