I always love your presentations, I needed a laugh today. As TSA regulations and travel have so many restrictions along with what you can carry, Traveling light, compact and productively has always been a concern . Thank you so much for answering a question that has been on my mind for some time...safely packing my gear and ease getting on the plane... thank you again... I truly appreciate you.

None of these are TSA regulations. They are regulations from PHMSA which is the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, which is a division of the DOT Department of Transportation. These regulations can be found via a google search "49 CFR Part 175.10". The regulation speaks to Watt-Hours Wh, not just Watts.

Volts x Amps does indeed equal Watts, but it definitely doesn't give you the metric that matters to the TSA: Watt-Hours.

The TSA website has information that seems to contradict much in this video. Not sure if something has changed or if TSA website is poorly written or what. The specific part I'm interested in is how many sub 100wh batteries you can carry on and the TSA website is clear the answer is 2. Any batteries over 100wh have to be cleared by your airline (and in my experience the airlines have no Idea what your asking them when you try to get them approved). I do somewhat doing the TSA will care if you slightly go over these rules. Also, a couple years ago the limit was 2 batteries Per Device, so a phone and a smart watch meant you could bring 4. The TSA website no longer mentions anything about how many devices.

Bence Szentiványi exactly! Watts=Volts*Amps. Batteries don’t have inherent Watts. A 14V battery connected to a 10-Ohm load will be operating at 1.4 Watts, regardless of the battery’s capacity. The same battery connected to a 1-Ohm load will be operating at 14 Watts, regardless of the battery’s capacity. Watt-Hours, however, are a measurement of the battery’s capacity. A 94 Wh battery will theoretically last 1 hour when operating at 94 Watts or 94 hours when operating at 1 Watt, and a 94 Wh battery is larger and contains significantly more Lithium than a 30 Wh battery.

Bence, I like to use water analogies. Eg, filling you pool with a hose. The amount of water coming out the end per second are the 'watts' and the volume of water in the pool is the 'watt-hours'.

Some countries like China and Thailand will look for the Watt-Hr rating of batteries at the security checkpoints. If the rating is too high, or if they can't read it, they will confiscate it.

Not just that, they also check on the amperage on smaller batteries. Going through Beijing a few years back for a layover on my way to Japan, they threw away 5 of my external batteries I used for my phone because amperage was too high. It's always a good idea, when traveling internationally, to check the rules on batteries for any country you are visiting to include countries where you are just catching a connecting flight in. I had to repurchase those batteries when I arrived in Japan and lost them again on my way back when catching my connecting flight in Beijing again.

This Canon C200 battery has 90 Wh www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1159864-REG/canon_0870c002_bp_a60_battery_pack_for.html
'Watt-hours' (Whr) is very important. Watts (W) is the rate the battery drains, vs, Whr that is the capacity (think volume). A high W battery may have low Whr and vice versa.

Nice video sir - I have an issue with American Airlines though, long story short I am in Australia traveling to the US in a few weeks. We're flying United Airlines from Australia to the US which has no limit on spare under 100wh batteries you can take in carry on, inside the US though I will be flying separately state to state with American Airlines, on their website however and talking on live chat to them, they only allow 2 spare lithium batteries under 100wH. Not 2 spare batteries per device, no no, 2 spare batteries TOTAL. This is a big issue because I will have my canon camera which has a total of 3 batteries and my GoPro which has a total of 4 batteries, and they have said no. Even though all other airlines and TSA state there is no real limit/quantity under 100wh, AA have said their limit is 2. I don't understand this as so many people like myself and yourself and others have 2 types of cameras and have more than 2 spare batteries for them. As mentioned I am traveling from Australia so I am very concerned I am going to be stuck at one of my internal flights when I get there with my spare batteries that is more than 2. Anyone else have this issue or help with this? Why does AA only have a limit of 2? That seems so strange and very frustrating! Thanks.

Watts are like horsepower of your car's engine. Watt.hours are like the gallons of gas in its tank. Many batteries specify Amp.hours or milli.Amp.hours (your electricity bill is in kilo.Watt.hours I guess). Imagine a 3.6V cell rated 10,000 mAh. That is 10 A.h and 10 x 3.6 = 36 W.h.

You are right as far as commercial BS works but actually Wh is a bit shady. W = Volts times Amps but 1 Ampere is 1 coulomb per second so Watts are already intrinsically relative to time. You can't have a Watt without time, like you have Voltage or potential difference. But people are used to the idea of Watts from their homes and writing Joules or Ah on the batteries would seem unfamiliar in most consumer products. I'm not an authority in physics though, it's just my personal opinion that calling him out for using W instead of Wh is not really justified :)
