I was in the audience for one of the three times Stratas sang this at the Met in 1989 which to this day is the finest single performance I have ever experienced - its was spell-binding. The entire audience was undone -- that day, there was a haunting silence at the end as the audience needed to recuperate before bursting into cheers.
Was there to see her amazing feat of all 3 heroines in the Trittico. Heart-rending from this wonderful stage artist!
I really miss Teresa Stratas. I think she was one of the greatest singer-actors of the 20th century along with Callas and Sills. She could set the stage on fire with a performance.
Absolutely right. Canada tried to kill Lous Quilico, Jan Martel and many others. Did they try to kill Teresa too. They failed. We wept and cried through hours of her performances today. Thank you Teresa for the catharsis! Eucharisto!
My wife and I love you, Teresa. My mother and grandmother, both immigrant pianists, teachers and singers in Toronto loved you. You are one of the greats that the world somehow missed. Who cares? Millions heard, were moved by you and love you until the end of time.
Thank you for this. My favorite Puccini scene, and I greatly regret missing the great Stratas in "Trittico" and in that other great nun opera, "Dialogues of the Carmelites."
Teresa Stratas OC FRCMT(hon) (born May 26, 1938) is a retired operatic soprano and actress from Canada of Greek descent. She is now 84 years old in 2023.
Stratas never did a broadcast as Suor Angelica. At the Met she only sang the role (all three Trittico roles) in '89. She sang all 3 roles only 3 times in that run. She sang Giorgietta and Lauretta in a performance where Soviero sang Angelica (and sang the broadcast Angelica that season) and another Giorgietta with Soviero as Angelica and Hei-Kyung Hong as Lauretta. Would only there be a great recording of her in this. Most glad for this one. Thank you for sharing!

I saw her do the second and third of those three performances and I will never forget the first of the performances I saw. She took every dramatic risk she could possibly take, as if she were doing a daredevil trapeze act, and yet her voice sounded sublime, even better than on this recording and in fact better than I had ever heard her. She was sublime.
Yes. I was at the prima, one of the few in which she did all three roles, and I will never NEVER forget the sight of her tearing off her wimple, sitting on the ground and rocking back and forth through Senza Mamma.
A truly great singing musician and actress a\Always loved her, She was in stature the petite Callas. She did hv the secret to great musicianship that Callas had. Now fortune we were to have hd such great talent -- here were others as well - Sills for example. Ahh too soon they retire thankfully we have such recordings that hold history.
