I always enjoy your videos I have many Olympic stamps but I do not collect them as a topical collection. Please keep making these interesting and informative videos. Dan
Well done as always.!! Great Video in only 15 minutes gives the right advices to collect Olympic stamps. My whole collection is about the Olympics, the host countries in particular Athens 1896 and 1906 (yes), Berlin 1936 and Rome 1960 ( Italy my homeland) Also the small San Marino is a big part of the collection in particular with postcards, sheets and first day covers starting from 1956 Cortina D'Ampezzo Winter Olympics.
Today, I jumped on the chance to buy the 1996 Centennial Olympic stamps. I really wanted them because I remember being 5 years old at the time. My brother was so excited to go downtown to watch a basketball game at the time too. I remember going to Centennial Olympic Parks fountain during and after Atlanta hosted the games. I still enjoy going to the fountain and watching kids playing in the water. These stamps have local and personal history for me, and I am glad to have gotten them.
I have always liked the Greek Olympic set. My album has 10 of the 12 pictured. I have had the first 9 for a long time but thought I would never get the 10th due to cost. Well I was able to get the 10th one from one of the stamp clubs I belong to for a good price. I now have all 10 mint in my album and they look great. Horrah for stamp clubs!!
Another great video with an amazing history lesson with stamps as the platform.....thanks! On a personal note I hope you and yours are healthy and safe from the Covid-19 virus as I saw NJ has been hit hard. Stay safe!
Canadian stamps for the 1980 olympics were commissioned, but subsequently destroyed when they joined the boycott. A few have been kept at the Postal Museum. There was an article in Canadian Stamp news.
@@ExploringStamps I am sorry. I need to correct myself. The article appeared in the March/April 2018 (vol 69 no 2) of the Canadian Philatelist. It was not an article but a well researched answer to a letter to the editor. (page 74). The answer includes a reproduction of the four stamp block which now resides in the philatelic record of the National Archive of Canada. It features a gymnast and was to be sold for 35 cents.
Another awesome show I have many Olympic stamps from lots of different countries and are as always happy to get more lol. I even worked the Olympic games in Atlanta back in 96 do I have a large Olympic pin collection also. Keep up the great work can't wait for the ed next one!!!
A great video leared alot on this one have several Olympic stamps from around the world even those south Africa stamps .but a new hunt know for the first greece Olympic stamps. Thanks again for the great history lesson
Hey Graham! your video today is super interesting, very studious as well! we support you in this yet i have the art of collecting sport STAMPS! recently on nov. 30 to december 11 of 2019 is that the 30th southeast asian games took place and the Venue was in the philippines! i happen to have alot of my own cachets and a first day cover joined with a sheetlet of stamps of the 30th southeast asian games yet i cherrish to look at them! somehow, even sport stamps are very nice to look at! yet i had my own stamps of the summer olympics of 1980 which were issued by romania and mongolia as i have researched yet i saw that the romanian stamps were communist stamps so yeah! i am grateful for what i currently have!
Excellent! Like you I enjoy sports stamps. I need to look out for more FDCs with stamps, they are always attractive and I find them very cool. Glad you enjoyed the video, and thank you for watching :)
Another great video!!! My topical collection of Taekwondo has kind of morphed into an Olympics topic since many of those stamps are part of Olympic stamps sets.
I had no idea the rings and their colours represented the five areas the participating countries were from! Those poor collectors in 1980! That would have been so disappointing!! I love how diverse and colourful all the Olympic stamps are from all around the world, they are so pretty! This episode is getting me excited for the Tokyo olympics!
I agree that Philippine stamps would make a great topic. There was an older Philippine man who worked in the laboratory where I studied, and when he found out that I liked stamps, he brought tons of older Philippine stamps from his letters in for me - I was amazed at how big, colorful, and artistic they were. If you haven't checked out Philippine stamps - do so, they are wonderful.

very informative and educational this video is great as I have collected stamps since I was 5 years old there are alot of these stamps I did not know was Olympics
Nice video, thanks for that. One fact of the stamps from Germany in 1936. It was the first issue in the world, which shows also a woman in olympic competition ;) Regards from Germany
@@ExploringStamps You're welcome ;) Another interesting fact about these issues is, that the demand for these stamps were so high during the games, that the post established several special Post offices for the games (I think 15?) also the stamps were also printed in rolls to sell them faster, in addition to the normal stamp sheets. The demand was so high that some offices opened until midnight. Also postman were walking around to sell the stamps. ;)
Great video as always, I did not know about the first stamps from Greece - they are much cooler now that I know about them. I would be interested in hearing from you and other viewers what your favorite Olympic stamps are. Mine are the beautiful set of Mexican stamps in vibrant colors showing various sports from the 1968 Mexico City games. Anybody else?
Aah, excellent choice - I have always loved those and can still remember going down to the post office and buying them when they were issued (normally I don't collect mint stamps but I made an exception in this case).
Love the episode! Btw thanks for sharing info about Postcarting. I tried so let's see how it will work. Its very nice way to get different stamps all around the world.
Fantistic episode, Graham, with a lot of great historical insight. I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit I did not know about the 5 stars being used as faux Olympic rings.
Hello There, I have some stamps that the perforated cut was wrong. The cut was made in the center of the stamp instead of the outer corners. It a book of 20 front and back and all 20 are like that. Their the Madonna and Child (Christmas Collection) from 2019. Are those stamps valuable or not?
I took a quick perusal of my stamp albums and was surprised at how many Olympic stamps were in my collection. Nice graphics. Great philatelic info, as usual. So are you going to return that oar to the boathouse or what?
1/ 1st OLYMPIC stamps issued 25th March 1896, 12 values, 52,000 sets issued. 2/ in 1964 Prince Constantine of Greece was and still is the only Royal to have won a Olympic Gold medal in 1960 in Rome..Greece didn't have a gold medal since 1912. 3/ a commemorative stamp issued on 18th January 1961 portraying his highness with a boat...2,000,000 were printed .
Dear Sir, your youtube videos are highly interesting, and your clear effort is highly appreciated. is it possible to make a video about how to distinguish the year of issuing a stamp, if it was repeated for many years like the case of Franklin{ A115 } that was issued 1902-1903 and many years later. the value today is depending on the year of issuing ? this is just an exaampl (also Washington One cent 498G 1917 and N 544 1921.......ect thank you very much in advance Dr A. Cancelled To Order: postage stamps printed and immediately postmarked (or even printed with the postmark) without ever being used (and usually still have the adhesive gum on the back). Many collectors don't like them because they have never served their purpose of carrying mail, and many have never even been in the country "supposedly" issuing them. They are produced solely to get money from collectors. There are a number of countries in South America, Africa, and Asia that do this and the former Eastern European, Warsaw Pact countries used to do this.
As Barry said, but also that the cancellation is perfectly positioned and clear. And the same stamps will have identical cancellations. Buy some of the popular topical stamp bags, and there will probably be tons of CTOs. At first I never thought of it, but now I personally dont include CTOs in my collection.
Exactly what Barry and Rasmas explain! Also check out my video on postmarks and cancels, I explain it there as well :) ua-cam.com/video/9i06SxrZ0tQ/v-deo.html
Amazing video !!! Just a quick question , Reich stamps surprisingly is not a propaganda unlike their other stamps , but still there is a surcharge in each stamps , is it for Olympic related surcharge ?
Such an interesting video. The Olympic is interesting, but the fact that some countries which are poor or have a high level of poverty hosted the Olympics makes me sad. Look at Brazil for example. Btw, you have sorta maybe kinda make me want to make my own videos about the history of Vietnam through stamps... sooo.... 😂😂😂
Glad that you found the video interesting :) Thank you for watching! YES please start a channel about Vietnam's history through stamps, that would be so cool!!

I get goosebumps whenever you do an episode where stamps and philately played a role in history. Superb video. Well done
