- If you want to run dual monitors on the original M1 MacBook Air, you need a docking station.
Plugable has an option that works but has some quirks that don't make it the best user experience.
If I have something set up wrong, you have this working or know of a better option (that's not going to break the bank) hit me up in the comments down below.
If Plugable Customer Support can assist me in get this working, I will post an updated video. For now, add this to your research if you are in the market.

I can only get one monitor to work at a time. They each work separately, but when I try and use both only one works in the HDMI 1 slot on the dock.

Do you have FileVault active by any chance? From what I gather, feeding monitor data from those docking stations rely on having the DisplayLink app+drivers active on your Mac, and no apps are going to be launched before you enter the FileVault password to decrypt the Macbook's SSD (which would explain the issues in clamshell mode.)
I do. And I disabled quite a bit to make it work but in the end, not comfortable with that option. I will take security over display.
Since doing this video, things have "worked" in clamshell. I leave wi-fi on so the Apple watch unlocks. I put worked in quotes because it's not 100% all the time. I also turned off the option to require a password when in screen saver mode as I get the message, 'your monitor is being observed, unable to unlock with Apple Watch" I will keep the device. It's tech. Nothing is perfect but it's perfect enough :) Thank you for watching and commenting. Have a great weekend!

Considering the whole 2 monitors scenario for M1s is not natively supported by Apple, I suppose these quirks are expected... Anyway, you've convinced me to get one :)

Man, thanks the video. I’ve been considering to get this docking station to connect two monitors to a new M1 MacBook Air I’m planning to get this coming week. , But I couldn’t find a video review to confirm how effective the docking station is with two monitors until I saw your video. I guess it’s not a major inconvenience, but you buy a product that would work as advertised, and the issue with the two monitor seems like it could work today and who knows tomorrow.

@@krazywabbit I received the docking station this week and i works amazingly, no issues at all. The company has a new driver for the latest Mac OS and i think that resolved any issues it may have had. I can work with the Macbook Air M1 in clamshell mode and I haven't had any issues, and I can log into my computer without having to open the labtop to use the fingerprint scanner. Works exactly as advertised and I highly recommend it. Thank you again for your video that helped me with my purchasing decision.

Pluggable UD-3900Z connected it to my MacBook Air M1 with dual monitor and Displaylink, when I am idle for 1 or 2 mins both monitors with mouse are frozen and not working.
Sorry to hear. So many things could be the issue. Best option to reach out to customer support. Or just return it.
