Tip: Record externally and the camera will not overheat. It offers a clean HDMI output. The sensor is the same as the whole A6XXX lineup (minus the A6700). So saying it's decent is somewhat of an understatement. The A6700 offers only an incrimental improvement over the a5100 in terms of image quality. What got improved a lot however is the image processor, so the JPG look a lot better on the A6700. However, the JPG from the a5100 are quite edit friendly. Works well to download them to the phone and give them a quick brush up. Or simply work with the raws in Lightroom Mobile. Having said that, the points where the camera really struggles for me in photography are: - Screen not bright enough in strong sunlight. - No eye af. Would I buy it again? Yes, on a budget or on the hunt for a super light and small camera for the pocket, I would. It's as well a great webcam if you use it with a HDMI to USB adapter.

It's very slow, quickly looses the eye and only works with Single AF. It's even worse than the eye AF of the A7II. Like that it's much better to use Lock-On Flexible Spot on the touch screen.
I've been using a5100 for a while and it is completely fine for my all Social media needs. Considering the price, nothing better than this for me and i highly recommended a5100 for beginners

@tyler6272 The old Sony app isn't as stable as the one for the newer cameras. On my Samsung S20 Ultra it usually works though. PS: Disable VPN software on your phone when connecting to the camera. Caused me a lot of headaches.
got mine brand-new in a sealed box a week ago with one year warranty for 313 USD (11,000 THB). i use it with Fujian and TTArtisan lenses. awesome results. came with a screen protector and a rubber body shield (happy overheating!). kit lens and 32GB card were in the box as well.
Still using mine. I have a drawer full of bodies. Most of my lenses have their own body. I've shot about 400 UA-cam videos, most have at least some footage from an a5100. I also use a Pocket OSMO 1 and LG v50 smart phones. I am not even thinking of upgrading, these cameras solve all of my shooting needs. I will get a 4K camera in the next year. Still plan to release in 1080p but will shoot 4K where I need to reframe. Ever time I see a clean 2nd hand one, I buy it. Cheers.
I picked up an A5000 used at one time because I had a couple of A6000s and it was just so darned cute. Turns out it was and is a great little camera. So, I picked up an A5100 on the bay because it had the same sensor as the A6000. The flash won't pop up on the A5100, but I'm okay with that. For stills it's great. I had two of six images that were accepted for a show last year that were taken with the A5000 that were 12x18 in 16x20 mounts. I did use the A5100 with a manual wide-angle lens to video a fireworks show last 4th. I traded off my A6000s back before I got the A5100 as I was primarily shooting with a Canon 6D and 80D with some good glass. Speaking of. I have the EOS to E-Mount adapter. It's a bit funny to see the A5000 or 5100 with the EOS mount 70-200mm f2.8 mounted. It's more like you mount the camera to the lens rather than mounting the lens to the camera. Or as I somewhat crudly put it. It looks like a mouse having sex with an elephant.

I'm having trouble seeing why the 5100 is better than the 5000 since there is no view finder and i would kind of need that to take product photography of fishing tackle? I also do youtube and would like to do podcasts but it's main focus is taking photos of soft plastic fishing baits upclose in natural sunlight so wouldn't a view finder make more sense than looking on a screen? super new and looking to get into this stuff lol.
The camera body has no stabilization whatsoever. You can use any lens that has a Sony-E or FE mount on it. You can even use others if you get a suitable lens mount adapter. And of course what you do with your camera is up to you. You can certainly use it for photography, but I wouldn't recommend getting the camera if you're just taking photos. Something like an a6000 would be better for that.

When you say “record externally” what do you mean? Externally like live stream?

Got it as a webcam in 2024 - better for my use case and cheaper than a facecam pro, even with a used cam link
