    I just rescued a cockatiel 2 days ago and he’s been very quiet as he settles in but began chirping the moment he heard your boys! So cute!

      @@TheParrotTeacher Hi David! Thank you so much for the reply!
      He’s about 5-6 months old. His previous owner called him Pongo. We (Pongo & I) are debating on wether we’ll keep it or change it. So far we haven’t come up with an alternative though so time will tell.
      Sadly his previous owner didn’t interact with him so he’s very suspicious of hands. We had a breakthrough yesterday though where he’s decided I’m safe enough to hand feed him millet! And he started tearing apart one of his toys. I’ve also noticed a bit of beak grinding, which I learned from your videos is another good sign. He’s my first rescue bird and very different from my previous cockatiel who sadly passed away. She was very outgoing and LOVED people. Needless to say this is all a little new to me so your videos have been incredibly helpful!
      I would love to get Pongo a friend as I suspect he is lonely. When would it be a good idea to bring another feathered family member into the house when working with a nervous rescue?
      Thank you again for the reply and for all the great videos! Say “hi” to your flock for Pongo & I 🐥🙋🏼‍♀️

      @@IntuitiveLibby Hey Libby!
      I mean Pongo isn't the worst name. It has a bit of a charm to it I think!
      It's great he's starting to trust you and playing with toys!
      I'd give him time to settle in before considering another bird. When you do decide to get him a friend, keep in mind they may not bond or it may take a fair bit of work! Tolerance can always be achieved but bonding depends on the bird.
      If you're prepared for that and have space for two cages then you could give it a go!

      @@TheParrotTeacher Hey David! Just thought I would give you an update on Pongo. So, we decided to stick with the name as he does seem to respond to it and he seemed mildly entertained by the Disney movie, 101 Dalmatians, and seeing the character he was named after. And I agree, it does have a bit of charm to it and it is growing on me.
      I was able to start target training him the other day. In literally a matter of minutes he grasped the concept and was running to wherever I pointed the stick and touching it when I said, “touch.” He really seems to enjoy it too. Having never been able to successfully train any of my chihuahuas, I was blown away that this once standoffish bird was happily responding to cues and words in such a relatively short period of time. We’re now working on step-up and he carefully puts his toes on my fingers in response and then gently steps up as he eats the treat. When he’s done eating he kind of looks around and then hops off. After a moment though he walks towards me ready to try again.
      He’s also become a toy aficionado. After watching your videos, and Sophie’s videos, and some of Flock Talks videos on toy making and toy safety, I bought some bird toy supplies and made a few things. As soon as I put something in the cage, Pongo is eyeing it before making his way over to fully inspect. He’s a big fan of the finger traps that he can shred and he enjoys one made with leather that he likes to preen.
      It’s really marvelous how far he’s come in such a short period of time. Thank you again for your great videos. Pongo really enjoys responding to Chip and Fish. He doesn’t respond to every bird video I play, so I take it he really is quite the fan of your boys, lol. We look forward to the next upload!
      P.S. Pongo has also officially mastered the wolf-whistle as well as a spot on imitation of a some sort of sparrow he hears outside. Hopefully he’ll be up for learning the Hogwarts theme song eventually.

      @@IntuitiveLibby Hey Libby,
      Thanks very much for the update! It sounds like you and Pongo are making awesome progress!
      It's also great he loves to train so much, it opens up so many doors for you with how responsive he is!
      The fact he loves playing with toys is also a major plus. So many birds are scared or need to be taught, opens up a big world of destruction for him and buying stuff for you!
      Just keep playing it to him over and over and he may pick it up!

    Lovely video!
    I was always worried about using bedding on the bottom. They get any water on them they tend to mold. There are a lot of things that are unseen to the human eye. I don't know, I am just paranoid I am sure. I want my birds to live forever too lol!
    Alternatively, I made a foraging box, out of a box's lid. Filled it to the brim with rattan balls (those ones you mentioned earlier, by another name). They make for the best fun I think. Cockatiel loves tossing them out of the box to find hidden goodies inside them, or below them. I also added some cut up paper towel tube and woven palm leaf. The box lid itself is also parrot safe, so they (I also have 4 budgies) can chew on that as well. I take it out at the end of the day. I also set up 2 other foraging areas outside the cage as well. All about that variety right?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  4 роки тому +3

      Hey An!
      Thanks for the comment!
      We haven't had any mold issues at all with our floor bedding. The risk of mold is exceptionally small, especially if you keep high hygiene standards EG *removing all fresh food twice a day from the floor of the cage, removing any poop twice a day and leaving small gaps near the water bowls.
      If you use the right substrates it also reduces the risks significantly, for example easibed or easichick. It just needs to be bird safe and dust extracted!
      In our minds the risks are so minimal the positives far out weight them. It protects their feet, prevents poop build up, which bars tend to attract and opens up a whole dimension of in cage enrichment for them. They absolutely love it!
      I plan to do a video on the pros and cons of both, as like you, I had my reservations in the past! I was bars all the way. But, since going to substrate I would never go back.
      We actually use foraging trays too! The boys love those !
      Yours sound pretty awesome, some great fun ideas there! We all know how birds love to chew lol

    I ended up putting news paper on the bottom of the cage just for their feet and for easier cleaning. It’s a game changer on cleaning the cage. It was such a pain cleaning the bars every week. Now it takes less than 5 minutes to clean each cage.

      I felt much the same when I got rid of the bars! Newspaper is alright, but if you decide to swap it up, try something that provides foraging opportunities! Even if its just a small tray or paper plate with some shredded paper and treats on it!

    Is there any reason to ever switch around the setup like with perches and food/water placement? We did this a few days ago and I’m pretty sure it stressed our girl a bit. Thx

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  4 роки тому +1

      Hey there,
      With food and water placement, I'd say no, it should be kept consistent unless it's a health risk (like they are constantly going toilet in it)
      With toys, some birds find it novel and enriching if their environment is changed around a bit. For example Fish gets bored of some of his toys until we take them out for a bit then put them in elsewhere.
      With perches, generally it's better to keep them where they are unless they get too dirty or too badly chewed. But again, it depends on your bird/birds
      It does depend on the individual bird though! Some will be stressed out by changes, others will be perfectly ok with them! Sometimes just changing things up a little at a time can help get them used to things!
      Hope this helps!

    Something I can't find a lot of info on is about where to best put a cage in your home. I see a lot of people have bird rooms, but is it possible to put them in your living room? How far away from the tv? Can they be next to a window? Should I cover them up at night ot absolutely NOT because of night fright? I know they need a good nights rest, but can i get them to sleep at 9 while i still watch tv till 11? These are things I can't find a lot of info on and I want to make sure I go the best way about it, obviously!

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  2 роки тому +2

      Hey Judith,
      It might be worth watching some of my other videos, especially on the topic of night frights.
      I think many of these questions don't get responses in videos as they depend so much on individual circumstances. For example your lifestyle, the size of your house, what the cage size is etc.
      Generally, as parrots are social you want the cage somewhere where you spend lots of time, this is most commonly the living room. Bird rooms are awesome and if you have multiple birds or intend to spend plenty of time in there then they become even better. But, they are a minority rather than the norm still.
      Regarding the TV. If you watch it at night then I'd suggest far away. However, we have our cockatiels right next to ours because they enjoy watching me play games and we seldom use it at night. It's also a OLED whereas older TV's can irritate parrots due to their refresh rate.
      I'm assuming you have cockatiels due to where this comment is, we don't recommend covering, or if you have to cover only partially. I'd watch my videos on cockatiel fear/night frights for more info on this.
      You could do that, but it'd depend on what activities you and or other people do in that room. If you dimmed the lights and just listened to music with headphones, browed on your laptop quietly or read then it'd be fine. If you were watching loud and exciting TV programmes then likely not. We tend to just go and do things in the bedroom of an evening. However that's not to say an occasional later bedtime is harmful for example if you have guests round or have to do important work.

      Hey Raj,
      We do have one we put in there from time to time. There's nothing wrong with having a swing in a cage provided it's well maintained or swapped out if it gets worn out.
      They can actually be good for parrots as they encourage exercise!
      The only other thing to be aware of is the material of the perch segment. If it's jagged, or too smooth it can be bad for their feet.

    Any advice for convincing an elderly cat that the cockatiel strutting around the floor is not a new toy? We've had both animals for years, but until recently, they were rarely allowed in the same room together. Unfortunatly, they now have to share a room until this summer.
    Not too bad so far, but occasionally, kittums gets a bit stalky and I'd rather gently and firmly discourage and hunting of the featherling

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  4 роки тому

      Hey Illythia,
      Sadly the only tip I can give is either don't have them out together or keep them separated or supervised.
      If they aren't used to each other the cat will likely keep going for the bird.
      Is the kitty used to crates at all? Like a large dog or cat crate the cat can rest in with some treats while the cockatiel is out?

    • @fleurpouvior2967
      @fleurpouvior2967 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheParrotTeacher she can crate, but we only have her little travel crate. I've been enforcing strict, supervised out time only for chewy, and whoever missbehaves first gets put in timeout. Chewy in his cage, or kittums in the bathroom. Most of the time, kittums is more interested in sunbathing and snuggles, but today she's much more hunty and about to land herself in timeout.
      The biggest problem, is chewy keeps baiting kittums. Trying to land on her head, or peck at her tail when kittums is being good, or running straight toward a crouched, pounce ready cat like it's nothing.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  4 роки тому

      Sounds like a sensible move so far!
      Problem is both of them don't know the other at all or what they are capable of. Generally if Kittums is well fed she won't be too interested in hunting unless she's feeling playful to exercise her instincts or baited as you mentioned!
      Chewy likely doesn't realise the danger he's putting himself in as he hasn't encountered any cats. He is just being playful or guarding his territory!
      It's tough mixing different species, especially when it is hunter prey. Honestly, I'd recommend continuing to be ultra careful and keeping them supervised or separated.
      I know some, would encourage training and I might too if they were younger, or be like "oh just let them get on with it" but is it a risk you want to take for either of your pets?

    • @fleurpouvior2967
      @fleurpouvior2967 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheParrotTeacher chewy is a year and some months, but kittums is an old lady. Luckily, so far all her 'attacks' on chewy seem to be with the intent to get him to fly. She very rarely tries to actually last out, and sometimes even tries to lazily reach out to pull chewy closer for nuzzles and grooming.
      She does that with her toy, she almost never hunts them, just agressivly grooms lol

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  4 роки тому

      Him being younger gives you a little scope for training. For example re-enforce staying on high, practicing his recall if there is a potentially dangerous situation or rewarding him for not having a go at Kittums.
      In some ways, her being older does help as her instincts to hunt may be a little less keen than a young cats would be, especially as she's used to play and being relaxed, there is still that risk though.
      But, honestly, do be cautious. All it takes is one accident and it'll make everyone feel bad, we've seen or heard about it too many times :(

      That's what being out and about is for! Also structured recall and stationing training!
      If anything at this point I feel the cage was a little bare when I made this video. The cage should be a home, lots of fun things to do! These cages may be called "flight" cages but in reality any bird bigger than a budgie will be able to manage little more than a hop!
      Although you are right a parrot should be able to stretch it's wings inside which we've been careful to make space for even now!
      Flight should be encouraged outside through free flying (when properly mentored/trained), flying in the house, training and through lots of fun activities!

      Hey Joseph, the name of the cage should be in the video along with a link somewhere!
      I'd suggest googling the cage's name as there are different suppliers depending on where you are in the world!
