  • In 1978 one of the greatest duets of the era was released, the top 5 hit Whenever I call you friend between two of the greatest voices of any era, Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks. Hey Music Junkies, the Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time with our latest edition of Pop Fix. Kenny and Stevie’s voices together are smoother than silk. Which is why this song is not only one of the great duets of the time, it’s also a yacht rock classic and though Stevie is credited on the album track, she was strangely not credited on the actual single, which makes Whenever I Call You "Friend", Loggins' first major solo hit.. "Whenever I Call You Friend" was written by Kenny and another multi-platinum artist from the time Melissa Manchester. I was able to get the lowdown from both artists on the origin of this song. Here is Kenny Loggins and Melissa Manchester with the story.

Their chemistry was great. They seemed to love & like each other when they sang together! Women tend to like Kenny a lot. Kenny L has a lot of charisma. Kenny Roger even said that she really love to hear Kenny L at his concerts. In a lot of Kenny's concert, Kenny has a lot of Soul in his R&B in his Live concerts!

I just read how Kenny cracked the whip on Stevie for two days to get that vocal. She almost quit, but in the end she realized that he wanted an energetic vocal and he was a great producer.

I was 5 years old when I first heard this song. It was around Christmas time and we were spending the holiday with my aunt, uncle and cousins. We had just come in from the cold after a long drive and I was just glad to be out of the car. We walked into the living room where my aunt had this huge black stereo-turn table with an eight track and radio. RCA Top of the line back then. After hugging everyone hello, I turned around and saw the glowing lights of the Christmas tree. I stared in awe of it as I always did. This song started at that exact moment. It was amazing. From that moment on, that song always reminded me of Christmas. It's a cool, magical piece of art.

When Stevie sings that solo line, "forever and ever", with that last sung note, always gives me goosebumps. It did even when I was 10 years old back then and still does at 52. I always thought of it as a bird singing. One of my Top 10 favorite Stevie vocals and the first to make me take notice of Stevie Nicks.

Kenny and Melissa recently did a joyous and brilliant version of this song and while not as iconic as with Stevie I think it stands on it's own. Had no idea they co wrote it together. Both in their 70's now, better late than never.

@@ldolphin34 Actually it was the other way around. Melissa considered herself a balladeer and Clive Davis with the production of Arif Mardin offered a great record that haunted her for years later. She would not perform it in the 90’s and was surprised it win her a Grammy. With an up and down recording career at Arista, Melissa expanded her musical direction and fared well.

The intro seemed to be more influenced by "Good Vibrations" than "Wouldn't It Be Nice". I have to admit that when the song came out in '78 I had the same reaction as Michael McDonald & Clive Davis. It was okay but nothing special. It has grown on me over the years but there is another song Stevie sang on that I liked much more: "Gold" by John Stewart in 1979 (also peaked at #5). She also helped John with his follow-up top 40 single called "Midnight Wind", which was pretty good. Stevie also appears on a great song called "Smiling Islands" by Robbie Patton in 1983.

Yes - and I think this song demonstrates that better than almost any other song she does! Even her own stuff.

I was a 19 year old Waikiki Army lifeguard in the Summer of 1978 when this song hit the radio. For at least 5+ years whenever Stevie hit that long sustained note ...”carry onnnnnnnnnnnnnn”, I would get a shivering physical chill right up my spine. I don’t get that chill anymore during the sustain but I get a little chill in anticipation of that note when she begins that passage “in every moment there’s........”. I just heard the song before watching your great video and it happened again.

I always say that I think this might be Stevie's finest vocal ever recorded.

Been mine and my husband's song for many years. Gives me chills to this day! I listen to it ,still, several times a week. What a great contribution this song is!! "This Is It" and "Heart To Heart" are both equally as great!

Great job getting all those interviews with Kenny and Melissa. Can't believe it's already been 42 years. Kenny looks great, like Kevin Costner if Kevin Costner hadn't aged so much.

I recall hearing a DJ mentioned the names -- and I wasn't sure which was the woman -- Kenny or Stevie, but knew it was a great song. I knew Fleetwood Mac's hits, but wasn't really aware of Stevie as an entity yet. They both blew up in the 80s, but this was my first real introduction to the two. I've long though this is Stevie's best duet -- even though her two with Tom Petty and Don Henley are also phenomenal.

Other great (but lesser known) Stevie duets/backups “Magnet and Steel”, Walter Eagen and Stevie; and a personal favorite “Midnight Wind” with John Stewart and “Gold”; and another favorite, “Mohammed's Radio” with Warren Zevon and Stevie; Tom Petty and Stevie in “I Will Run to You” “Needles and Pins” and “Insider”. Every Stevie fan needs to have downloads of these songs!

Great episode on this song. I get the feeling though there is more to the story from Melissa Manchester's side than what is presented here! Stevie Nicks is so sweet and harmonious on the duet with Kenny. Melissa would have tried to out sign Kenny on any duet they did together and it would have been a lessor song. Melissa's own version of the song isn't very good. Too formal.

I love the harmony of the beginning of the song when Kenny Loggins is singing with his background singers. Kenny Loggins is a excellent harmonizer. That's why it's awesome that he does songs with groups like Take 6.

    Love this "behind the song"
A friend told me that Sara Evans had recorded a covers album and this was one of the songs. It's a duet with Phillip Sweet of Little Big Town. Great song.

I liked Loggins & Messina allot so when this song came out it was great. Stevie was in my favorite band & I absolutely loved her voice. I couldn’t imagine anyone else singing this with Kenny. I was 15 when this came out & it was always on fm radio but you never got tired of it. Kenny & Stevie are both at the top of their game on this one. I do wish there was a video of it.

Did they (Kenny and Stevie) ever perform it live or make a video?
I would have thought by 1978 a video was a marketing essential...

Agree. Sometimes she has a tendency to take over a song when singing with others. Not her fault - it's just that her voice & her sound can dominate because it's so distinctive.

One of my favorite songs from the 1970's. Evokes memories of orange evening skies over the Ohio River from my youth. The perfect soundtrack to our lives.
