Christopher Owens (of Girls) Is Back... Again (Meet the Most Underrated Indie Singer-Songwriter)

- Christopher Owens was known as the frontman for the popular indie band Girls from 2009-2012. He came with a very interesting backstory, having grown up in the Children of God religious cult and moved to San Francisco as a young adult.
After forming the Girls duo with Chet "JR" White, Girls released 2 excellent, critically acclaimed albums, 2009's Album and 2011's Father, Son, Holy Ghost, with the 2010 EP Broken Dreams Club in between, Girls appeared to be headed for even greater heights.
In 2012, Girls suddenly disbanded to the shock of many, as Christopher Owens then embarked on a solo career.
Christopher Owens released 3 albums in 3 years. While these albums were really good (especially the 3rd one, Chrissybaby Forever), they increasingly flew under the radar and unnoticed.
Owens then assembled another band, CURLS, and released a 2017 EP Vanti, then CURLS disbanded.
Christopher Owens then suffered a terrible chain of events.
He got into a bad motorcycle accident, which left him hospitalized.
While hospitalized, his fiance left him.
He then lost his job at a coffee shop, leaving him nearly homeless.
He then lived out of his camper, which then got stolen with his pet cat in it!
His former Girls bandmate, Chet JR White, died in 2020.
Owens hit rock bottom.
Here, he has the opportunity to make a very improbable comeback with his 1st solo album in 9 years, I Wanna Walk Barefoot Through Your Hair.

Wow… thank you so much, I’m so surprised to stumble across your channel and hear your glowing views about me and my music. You are awesome. I’m so honored by this. All the best to you
Love ya Chris hope the tour is going well x
I’m impressed by your knowledge and I’d love to hear what you think about the album now that it’s out. -your boy
ChrissyBaby! Loved your show at Masonic Lodge / Hollywood Forever Cemetery a couple of weeks ago. Went with my brother, who’s as a big a fan of yours as I am. A Beach Boys - Surfs Up (Disney Girls) cover? And a Daniel Johnston?? Niice! Still processing the new album but as it stands, it’s one of my 3-5 favorite releases this year. The album closer is emotionally overwhelming. I was on a jog when it came on and got really choked up. The repetition of that line is enormously powerful. I’ve introduced that song and the album to some friends and family and they’ve come back reporting the dame. That guitar lick on I Know if groovy. Love when you get into your surf rock bag. Distant Drummer is one of my brothers favorite songs from the year. Beautiful Horses is incredible. The “So” guitar instrumental reminds me a little of Susanna (or Suzanne?) from the ChrissyBaby album. I still don’t know which I prefer between this and ChrissyBaby if I were to rank your solo albums, but those are my Top 2. New Testament is tight too but that’s #3 for me. I’ll report back with more (tried DMing your insta with my initial response) but I look forward to catching you and Bright Eyes at the Wiltern in Feb! Happy Holidays, man. Great 2024 and here’s to a fantastic 2025.
Beautiful album. I really hope it keeps getting heard. It deserves to ❤
Thanks for sharing this. I played lead guitar in Curls and on the new album - Cody Rhodes and Luke Bace also played in that band and are also the backing band on the C.O. record.
Hope you dig ✌️ 🙏
Oh wow, that’s excellent. Yeah, you’re a beast on the 6-string. There’s a full performance of Gentle and Kind on UA-cam that we shot at Moroccan Lounge. Super-glad to hear that you and the bandmates are playing on this latest album… which I’ve listened to like 5x now. My brother, cousin and I are talking about it daily. I’ll shoot over a Follow to you on IG. Thanks for commenting here.
It’s so refreshing to hear someone tell you such convincing points about a artist. I never been a artist person but a moment person. I love hearing his story
Thanks, I get what you’re saying about moments. Owens’s 3rd solo album ChrissyBaby Forever had some excellent moments in the 2nd half of the album. Starting from the song Heroine onward, pretty much.
What genres are you into most? What are a couple of your fav music moments (ie Michael Jackson doing the Moonwalk for the 1st time at Motown’s 25th Anniversary Special)
I'm here because this channel appeared on my front page. I'm glad I watched - that's a hell of a story! Plus all the old school music references warmed my gen X heart. I listened to some Girls tracks and they're quite good. Subscribing!
I agree so much. What a song writer Chris is.
I play a Girls song and a solo Chris song every set I play, even though I mostly play country music. I'm originally from SF and remember when they suddenly exploded on the scene seemingly out of nowhere.
Will check it out
They were a great band, I forgot about them
