C J & Company ~ Devil's Gun 1977 Disco Purrfection Version

- I wouldn't blame you if you thought that this was the Temptations doing disco. The vocal arrangements echo their classics where each one took a turn doing vocals like "Cloud Nine" and "I Can't Get Next To You".
The lead guitar and bombastic production orchestration come courtesy of Dennis Coffey, who as part of the Funk Brothers played guitar on countless Motown hits then helping to create the rock sound of soul with Norman Whitfield and his experiments with the Temptations. Also on board from the Funk Brothers was keyboardist Earl Van Dyke whose pounding notes added an urgency to "Devil's Gun" that helped to create a disco monster.
The group was first named C.C. & Company, the C.C. was Charles Clark who with members Constance Durden, Cornelius Brown Jr, Curtis Durden and Joni Tolbert sang on "Devil's Gun" a cautionary and urgent appeal to make the right choices. It was written by Ron Roker, Gerry Shury and Barry Green, who later on as Barry Blue would produce Heatwave's first LP that contained "Boogie Nights" and their second that contained "The Groove Line".
Issued by Westbound Records, the group was rebranded C.J. and Company when the album was picked up by Atlantic Records for distribution for some long forgotten reason. It hit immediately in the clubs and spent five weeks at #1 disco, peaking at #2 R&B. While it peaked at #36 on the Hot100, it spent an amazing 25 weeks on the survey entering the chart at #98 on May 21, 1977 and disappeared off the chart on November 5, 1977 when it last listed at #68.
It has been heard in the 1978 movie, "Crocodile" then included in the "The Get Down" soundtrack of the 2016 TV show that lasted only one season. In 2017 it was featured in the film "Borg VS McEnroe" a documentary of the two tennis champs. Reportedly, it will also be featured in the documentary "Studio 54" to be released some time this year. It is becoming a song for the ages now, after having been left behind. Hope you enjoy this remix!
In July of 1977 I joined this band as its keyboardist
My best friend who sadly passed away at 21, told me this was back in “Master Blaster” records, I got the bus and headed to to shop, got there early and managed to get the last album CJ& Co Devils Gun
So I would like to dedicate this to my best bud Mark who passed away 38 years ago, and never a day goes by, I don’t think about him, and the music we loved.
Beautiful dedication.to your best friend, Mark 🕊 May he Rest In Peace. You never forget the those who touched your heart and soul. Thank you for sharing! 💖
Sorry for your loss
I am so sorry. Now you have a nice remembrance of him listening to this song.
Sorry for your loss and may his memory go on through this song and your shared passion for music!
i have known so many people that died young that i can't keep track whos alive and who isn't.
What an amazing song!!! The lyrics and musical arrangementbare absolutely fabulous !!!❤❤❤
This tune still sounds great.😁
I remember this song from the late 70s. The theme in the movie "The Real Bruce Lee"
I've never heard this song before! Great track!Thx DJDC!
Hey Roman , 1977 this was a huge hit in the Disco clubs (only) for the radio stations were playing only selected Disco records for airplay . I was walking out of High School in 77 and it was great . Clubs caught on real about the new music called Disco a quicker version if you will on R and B which was already out and about and from 75 to 1980 it was insane to be at a club . You had to dress nice no jeans or sneakers some places required a jacket some a collard shirt . I could go on but I think you get it .
@@slyspy9819 Yeah, I get what you mean, cool memories, it was a great time, thx for telling me.
@@RomanL.N No sweat , I'd love to do it again (ha)
@@slyspy9819 👍!
Pre-disco club favorite 77. Great lyrics, great hook. Fab mix. Frenzy Dancin'. Luv the chorus. Thanks, CJ and Co. Vive les disco freaks ...
Capolavoro assoluto, undici minuti di pura follia in disco, non si smetteva più di ballare,i miei favolosi 16 anni😢😢😢
Concordo l'ho appena scoperta e la sto ascoltando a nastro da due giorni.
I am so glad you took this song. One of the unknown pearls of disco. Unfortunately it never was a big hit. I have still the CJ albums. And an alternative mix from mister T. Moulton who was in broadcast in NYC. and send me a tape to Amsterdam. I am still grateful. It isn’t the best quality, but I cherish this jewel. I can send you a digital copy, if you want.
I’d love to listen to this mix please!
@@drunkenelmo98 if you provide me your email address, I can send you it by WeTransfer.
I love this song. one of my all time favorites Was big in NY in mid to late 70' s on WBLS. We gpt our own thing was great too. I have been a DJ for over 40 years and would love a digital copy of this alternate mix. My Email is DJTonyin@gmail.com. let me know if you need any music. I have over 50,000 files +. thanking you in advance

I remember this song..... I found the album on the street by the library where I live and it's in excellent condition.... I enjoy the song.... I still love the song since I was 10 years old... I hope you have a wonderful weekend.... Keep the music coming..............
Love this song, just don't hear it enough. I remember when I first danced to it in the clubs
Excellent remix, incredible song back in the day. They don’t make em like this anymore. 👍👍👍
This song is excellent !
I was 17 years old when this song came out.
I learned how to mix on this record
Je la connaissais version 7 mn...mais cette version elle décoiffe....merci
One of the best songs in 1977
I never heard of this treasure. WOW is all I can say and i LOVE it.
A very unusual song from another era. Honestly, I don't remember this song. Quite interesting with a reminder to avoid being in a very difficult or precarious situations. Sound advice that is needed in the perilous times that we live in today.
I was DJing in both straight & gay bars in Nebraska back then. Took this song to Chicago with me. The right mix & the right Alien album over. VERY Don Ray/Cerrone flavored. Thank you for this bit of History!! 😎👍
This version is hot ! 😊
This song was the greatest and is just one of the best songs played in the last best kind of music, and that is disco music. I could play the disc on a Pioneer PL-500 direct drive turntable, so the signals can be captured by the Shure tonearm cartridge to be raised by the Pioneer SA-9500 II amplifier and come through the Pioneer HPM-100 speakers and fill the room like the control room in a recording studio. I heard another nice song by CJ & Company, that is, "We've Got Our Own Thing." If you believe me not, I suggest you listen to it for yourself.
The bassline is just plain 👿. When this came out, the drum solo was 🔥 🔥 🔥
I've heard this in movie soundtracks and backing 70s and 80s sports highlight packages but never the actual song. Damn it's good!
Always been a favourite this one, as soon as I got your notification upload I instinctively clicked
Perfecto 👌.
What a blast!! This is the dope! In my opinion the best mix on this masterpiece!

Also my first time!
@@RomanL.N good song, though, right?
@@silverbullet1620 Yes, it's true!
....we used to lose our MINDS to this in the discos.....now i workout to it.....
Killet mix on a killer song 🔥
How did they know back then that we would be looking down that barrel today?
If you think about it without getting too deep; the band was from Detroit who was suffering from devastation after the riots and downturn in the auto industry. Sadly, many people fled for the suburbs and Detroit was mired in drugs and gun violence that plagues the city today. CJ & Co. only lasted a few years as they were mired in some controversy of their own.
Delicious Remix!
Brilliant
Wow!!! I haven't heard this song since I was about 4 yrs. old !!! My parents have this vinyl and I loved it!!! I never knew the name until accidently coming across this song on your channel!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING!!!❤
