I started bulk loading 35mm film about 60 years ago. Then the bulk rolls came in 27, 50 and 100 feet. The larger the roll, the better the cost. You could save a lot of money compared to regular cartridges of the same film. That bargain is long gone, as Kodak either terminated their bulk offerings or raised the prices to the point where it's hardly worth the trouble. Ilford still offers a significant savings and sells all of its film in bulk (I think) - yeah Ilford. Two points: (1) After you thread the start of the bulk roll into the loader, you have to fit the whole roll in the chamber, then close it up. That bulk roll typically jams going in and can easily bend or kink the leader strip, so practice and be prepared to toss some film damaged at start. (2) DX coding. If you reuse regular cartridges, they have DX coding on them, Make sure that you use the same speed film or can shut off the automatic DX meter speed coding on your camera. Bulk reload cartridges are usually available with no code,
@12:02. Absolutely. My F5 did that. So immediately when you realize nothing’s wind back. Take it into the dark bag. But now I use good gaffer tape on a sturdy 10mm tail both sides.
It happened on power rewind once. Listen to the sound. The clue was it took too quick. Always if in doubt, open in a dark bag.
It's so much fun rolling my own. I love it.
Awesome Patrick. Have you compared different vintage models to get a feel of quality build & use? What models expose the least tail to tape on & cut ? I see some I like by Alden or noticed the Watson waste amount 2 frames each time not including the leader I splice my own cinema leader of 173mm.
You win coolest film name on UA-cam! 😂 I love illford hp5!
A great video to DISCOURAGE anyone from bulk loading their own film......
Nice tin of Tri-X there :)
Your bulk loader is definitely nicer than the Watson style and I wouldn't have opted for a Watson if I'd had to pay for it.
Once I figure out my own go-to 35mm BW stock I'll have to invest in a bulk roll of the stuff myself.

This is great stuff - I haven't migrated to bulk loading but I plan to start soon.
Question - are you still using traditional scanning? My XAS died and so I'm once again evaluating camera scanning... I have the Epson v800 as well. I'm testing Negmaster and Negsets rather than NLP and it really seems to give more consistent results. I need to do a couple more rolls before I decide though.
Cheers
Im back on the camera scanning train
Have you any experience with the Nikon f film canisters
I've never used them
You can still buy E100 in 100ft roll
Where? I assume it's rolled down motion picture stock. AFAIK Kodak does not make 100ft rolls themselves
@@SprocketHoles Ahh it was 400ft: Kodak Ektachrome 100D Color Reversal Film 5294 (35mm, 400' Roll)
