Just because an album doesn't sell well, doesn't make it a bad album. There are some amazing albums that have sold poorly. People are fickle...and will turn their backs on artists in a heartbeat.

Every single one of these documentaries has been expertly crafted - as a lifelong Sugababes fan thank you! So many rare gems of performances included in them all. I’m excited and actually kind of sad to see the downfall of the band in the Sweet7 episode ! But thank god for the Lost Tapes era now… fingers crossed we’re getting the new rumoured music video…

This was a vocally strong album. I think Keisha did amazing work organising vocal harmonies with this lineup. She really did the best with what they had. Unbreakable Heart was one of the vocal arrangements that just clicked for me

Such an underrated album! Definitely the most underrated of their discography! I admit I wasn't the biggest fan of it when it came out, even though I loved "Girls", but it has grown on me the last few years! I wish we had seen "Every Heart Broken" released as a single too. Also it felt bittersweet watching them having a good time with it, while knowing what followed soon after! Thank you so much for this series, as a major fan of the band, it really is a gift!

Every Heart Broken is still one of my Top5 'babes
Imagine an MKS update... SIobhan would 🤩
But it's strong enough that id love it from anyone.
I get why this is their least commercially viable album, but in a way it gave me Three vibes, easy listening, bit out there and tight melodically.
I also think Vs Change for e.g. theres no skips and its stayed fresher.

Thank you for creating such great documentaries on my favorite girl group. I'm from the U.S. so it still pains me that Sugababes never had their breakout hit here. But, luckily due to UA-cam I'm able to view their recent performances. They're truly an amazing group with an intriguing history. They also sound better than ever!

I have such a sweet spot for this album: it is by far my favourite with Three and One Touch. Nobody talks enough about how majestic Unbreakable Heart is. It is a severely underrated album, with very few tracks feeling like fillers. I hope they can work again with Klas Ahlund because Every Heart Broken and Side Chick are pure magic and Can We Call a Truce is the sweetest bittersweet closer ever. Thank you for the documentaries - they show such a passion and dedication and I love how you keep track of what all the members were doing during the same era.

Keisha's adlib on the second chorus of UH gives me the feels even now.
The label literally picked the worst singles.
If they wanted radio-friendly wide appeal they should have gone with You On A Good Day - miles better and timeless.
But EHB is genuinely stand out good, and would have fit the reputation they had at the time for coming back with a lead single that's a complete gear shift.

  • @Right_Direction_

This really should of been Keisha's solo album, it was her baby she did all the work on it. She sounds utterly amazing on it as well.
I get the sound she was going for, she wanted them to go back to being more organic, she often mentioned that she felt this was a true successor to One Touch in that it sounds more raw, has more of a live feel to the production and harmonies.
Whilst I get what she was going for, the harmonies were erm lacklustre and you can't really recreate a sound without what made that sound in the first place.
It's not a bad album at all, it's just not memorable as a Sugababe album and would have worked better for a Keisha solo album.
Girls was the obvious single choice, it's the most commercial and it was forced upon them by Darcus (head of the label at that time) to try and get them a hit after the relative failure of Change and Deinal (though the latter did better in some parts of Europe). The label wanted a big hit, they didn't hear one on the finished album, hence Girls being recorded, it worked but it was also seen as a gimmick as the song had been used for 2 or 3 years on a boots advert here prior to the Sugababes one coming out (their version then was used on the boots ad replacing the original).
I agree No Can do was the wrong choice of single, I do not agree the label didn't promote the album, they did, it had the same marketing team and budget as the previous 2 studio albums, I think the album not selling had more to do with them no longer being relevant, there was a clear downward trajectory after Mutya left, About You Now stopped the rot, but they couldn't capitalise on it and they were chasing trends, their time was coming to an end even before Keisha got kicked out.

    • @jjl6438
      @jjl6438 Рік тому +11

I agree on your points a lot! Just out of interest, were there any explicit statements from Keisha herself that it was the sort of follow up to One Touch? Anyway, I have always imagined Keisha leading the way on this album as she would have known how to orchestrate the vocals (mostly Heidi doing the small, side bits and Keisha largely playing off Amelle for contrast) just like in Unbreakable Heart and Sound of Goodbye.
In my opinion, Keisha did the best with what she had at that time (I strongly feel that she had always felt that Mutya and Siobhan were vocally her gold standard).
They were already selling out by riding to whatever was trendy at the time (Boots advert sell out) but Sweet 7 was the absolute pinnacle of selling out for the Sugababes (shockingly slutty Get Sexy and generic, faceless American sound).

    @Onyx765 Рік тому +5

Excellent job as always on these very informative documentaries! Before you go into Sweet 7, I think there are some things you should know about beforehand. Sorry if it's a long read.
    1. Keisha confirmed that she was present at the "About A Girl" music video shoot for the stunt double scenes, which surprisingly makes sense since one of the stunt doubles resembles her a little bit. " ‘About A Girl’ is the only one that brings up things for me because it was around that time. I’ve still never watched the video. I was there when that was being filmed, you know. I was on the way to the site. That wasn’t a good day.". - Keisha in a recent interview
    2. When Jade was being recruited for the group, she actually thought that she was replacing Amelle, because her and Keisha were actually mutual friends beforehand!!! When Amelle disappeared for a while, that lead to the rumors of her quitting the group when Keisha and Heidi did the MSN gig as a duo. Unfortunately, a week later, Keisha found out she was kicked out of the group at the same time that we all found out. She was sat down and told by management that SOMEONE (I still wanna know who it was🤬) felt bullied and that she was unfairly labelled as "difficult". Don't even get me started on all the racism she unfortunately experienced. 😔
    3. The 4.0 lineup announced an 8th album, but it's been rumored that they never had a full album ready to go evidenced by lack of published song titles and very few or little to no confirmations of fully fledged writing/recording sessions. Whatever little they worked on reportedly left their management and label unimpressed. When they were dropped by Island, Sony offered to distribute Freedom, but wouldn't pay for the release. This is what lead to the group taking on several sponsorships to fund the release of "Freedom" themselves. They also announced a second single titled "Hard" but has never been heard to this very day.
    4. The final public appearances of the 4.0 lineup was a performance on Daybreak (27.09.2011) and episode of the minidocuseries Pop Life titled "I'm In A Girl Group" (03.03.2012) which also interestingly enough also featured an interview from Keisha. Once MKS reunited, 4.0 quietly fizzled out and their split was never completely acknowledged until a 2013 Digital Spy interview with Jade and the 2020 Ladies of Liverpool podcast interview with Heidi. Not sure if Amelle has ever completely acknowledged it though. Even in 2019, she was still saying she's in the group despite MKS reclaiming the Sugababes name back shortly afterwards.
Hope all of that helps. I appreciate you doing these documentaries and I just thought I'd help find some of the rare bits of info that are hardly ever acknowledged outside of fan forums. Can't wait for the Sweet 7 documentary. Take all the time you need to make it because I'm both super excited and nervous lol

I always loved this album but this was the Point in which it was obvious they no longer had control as a band, and the power was with management and the label. They were known for setting a musical trend, but this album was chasing it. I always thought that Catfights didn't bomb because it was a bad album... Imo it's way more cohesive then Change, and imo also much stronger songs.
It's just that the single choices were absolutely poor. Though I initially liked Girls, I nowedays barely listen to it anymore. It's one of the weaker tracks on the album imo... Same for No Can Do. I never liked it, though it has kind of grown on me recently. But overall, to me it feels like they released about the weakest songs from the album. You On A Good Day, Sunday Rain, Beware, Unbreakable Heart... Pretty sure they all would have faired better.
But it's not only the singles choices, imo it's also that it lacked promotion... I am from Germany, Sugababes had been fairly big here as well, and I never knew about the album AT ALL until Keisha got the boot. I always thought they might just had taken a break or whatever. Catfights didn't happen at all outside of the UK, and I feel like it didn't even happen that much in the UK either.

Another interesting part of their PR/Promo for this album:
The girls also marketed this album as a “live sounding” album which would be their response for NOT touring with this album. Clearly this is PR for the lack of charting/sales of the album - but from the jump the girls would say this album is their most “organic live sounding” album.
I know the followed the same formula as ‘Change’ with their Album Chart Show special etc but It was by far the least exciting promotional campaign out of all the albums.

It's a very strong album (particularly vocally), and one of their most cohesive. But it's not the type of album for chart and mainstream success. As someone said, it would have been overshadowed by the 2008 pop landscape - Katy Perry, Duffy, more X Factor finalists, Adele (19), Flo Rida, Leona Lewis, Pink (Funhouse era), Beyonce (Sasha Fierce era), Girls Aloud. IMO Change is better and the Change slander must end 😝

Catfights and Spotlights is not only my favourite Sugababes album... it's one of my fave albums of any artist... It is full of bops... near perfect in my opinion. I think Girls and No Can Do are probably the two weakest songs.... Every Heart Broken would have been a much better choice...and could have had such an epic video. i think had they used other songs as singles, the album would have been more successful. There was near no promo for the album ... another case of the record label failing to do their job.

Recalling the sonic landscape at the time, with the retro-pop successes of songs from Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and heck, even Girls Aloud at the time, I won't blame the label or the girls for pushing Girls and No Can Do as singles. The latter, in particular, is quite competent and melodic. If they released something like Side Chick or Every Heart Broken, they would have blended in with the US R&B sound (ergo the rest of pop radio) at the time. That's partly why the retro sound was successful at that time - because it cut through and popped out of the increasingly generic R&B sound that dominated that era - it just unfortunately did not work as well for Sugababes as it did for other artists. People were not ready for their particular take on the Motown-inspired sound.

This amazing and underrated album (highlights being 'Sunday Rain' and 'Every Heart Broken') should have been the final Sugababes album, until now that the original line-up are back together. 'Get Sexy' & 'Freedom' were awful, the 'Sweet 7' album wasn't good and Jade definitely wasn't the right choice to be a member. Making out Keisha was a bully when she was actually forced to leave the group was terrible. No original members in the group = Not Sugababes.

And regarding the first interview bit here... Just. Please. It's so obvious "Song 4 Mutya" is about a lover and not some friends (or whatever). Because just listening to the lyrics, it's clear that the situation that led to the break up in the song wasn't her choice, she was beeing dumped. Which is not what happened in the Sugababes at all. That's a good example of the media always stirring and causing drama when there actually is none 🙄.

You can see how insecure they were about the album.
They have added a well known song (Girls), Mary Wilson (sounded wonky live) and Trio Cruz to make sure this sells!
There was no point in going throwback Motown looking at the competition within the same soundscape at that time.
Plus the greatest throwback producers (Ronson,Saadiqe etc.) were not used to make a real impact with that sound.
Heidi (as performer) is bland and Amel doesn't really help to amp it up. They appear wooden, less spontanious and vivid on stage.
This was definitely the weakest lineup of Sugababes.

I always wonder how much creative input they really had... Because I heard Girls was forced on them by the label and they actually hated it (at least they always admitted that the song was lying around in some drawer of a person high up in the ranks of their label, lol). I don't think it's that far fetched to believe that it was indeed the label that dictated the style. I think the only one that was really convinced was Keisha. Based on the writing credits, the other two weren't that involved, so it's also not hard to see why they might have been insecure about all that.
They didn't like their chosen Lead Single much... Probably weren't sold on the sound completely and maybe they also thought it's too risky (which it was... But I do think it was also partly the label's fault).
