Just a couple of tips before buying a portable generator. If you buy a cheap unit with a “Capacitor type” exciter, it should only be used for lighting, power tools or other equipment that does not rely on a stable power supply. Do not use it for expensive electronic equipment, Smart TVs or appliances with an inverter. AVR type exciter can be used on most equipment but before connecting to the household supply, check the generator voltage and cycles (Hertz) with a test meter. If the voltage is low/high, this is can be adjusted on the AVR. The cycles can be adjusted by increasing/decreasing the speed of the engine. But remember the volts and cycles will vary with the load on the generator and are dependent on the efficiency of the engine governor to respond to these loads. I would not recommend this type of generator if you have expensive electronic equipment. Inverter type generators are more expensive, but worth it in the long run. The inverter keeps the voltage and cycles stable under most conditions. It is ideal if using expensive electronic equipment, Smart TVs, or inverter type ‘fridges/aircon etc. Try to ensure any generator has a low voltage/low cycle trip (Or fit one) so if the generator fails in service, the power is disconnected instantly to save damage to equipment.. As always, “You gets what you pays for” and the choice must be yours.
