    Didn't see it mentioned, but a HUGE difference from any headphones on the market is that Momentum 4 can transfer audio+microphone through the usb-c cabel. On top of that it also charges and have ANC active, so basically turn them into wired headphones with built in microphone noise-cancelling.

    I own the XM5s and tried the M4s in a store. The Senns were more comfortable, they have more space inside the cups. I have modded my XM5s with strips of foam to raise the pads a bit. The XM5 has a quick access ambient feature like the M4, you hold your hand over the cup and it pauses the music and activates ambient sound. But I think I would prefer the M4 implentation where you can activate it for a few minutes without needing your hand on them. On SQ, I would like to try the M4 with AptX (if you have a Samsung phone there's no AptX HD) but my feeling was the Sony's tonality was better for BT, more forgiving and relaxed for long listening, that's mostly subjective though of course. I also think for Samsung users, LDAC is a big plus.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Рік тому +1

      That's a good point about the deeper cups on the M4s. I also agree that the XM5s are a smoother listen. That's where I think both headphones are comparable but different - neither is clearly superior in all ways.

    Nice review Lachlan. I have had the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless for about 6 months. I also own the Focal Bathys. I find myself using the Momentum 4 and the Sennheiser Momentum TWS 3 most often in a work setting and commuting. The Focals for travel and at home when I'm just puttering around and don't want to hook up a BT Dac/Amp and a wired IEM. The sound on the Sennheiser M4 are really good without any EQ, they are clean, clear with decent dynamics.

    With this type of product I'm not using them for long periods to give music my undivided attention, they're for use on the go and at this price level I find they all have acceptable sound quality. What matters more to me is the feature set, reliability and connection stability. I've been using LDAC for several years with headphones and portable DAC/amps without problems and I'm inclined to stick with it.

    I half wonder if Sony is refusing to sell the license for LDAC to competitors, but at the same time it is annoying because I'd argue the XM series headphones do not perform well enough to really make use of LDAC. This puts LDAC in a weird spot. Hopefully the Bathys has shaken up the market, and Sony will put out a true audiophile level headphone that can use LDAC and have decent connectivity.

    it appears the m4 have poor natural acousric characteristics, which then need to rely on over processed dsp processing. just listen to them turned off with the 3.5 cable and you will hear how poor it actually is. the dsp correction causes smearing of detail from the music. interesting, the accentum actually have a better base acoustic design which doesnt need over cooked dsp.

The music is more faithful to the recording, where as the M4s try to create an sonic sensation. Reminds me of the Bose approach to audio. Thank you very much for this well-made review (as always, I should add). It's not that often that you listen to a review and think, well, that are exactly my thoughts. And it's also exactly what I tell people who ask me about the Sonys and the Sennheisers. I own both, both are really good for what they are. But I enjoy the Sennheisers more for all the same reasons you mention. Actually, I was accidentally listening to your video with the Momentum 4. There is only one little point where I disagree. This is LDAC. It's better on paper, but first, it's not well supported, and second imho it is only ever so slightly better sounding if the circumstances are at an optimum.

    The Sennheiser Momentum 4 headphones offer excellent audio quality for music. However, they may not be the best choice for video calls or meetings, particularly in an open office environment, as the microphone tends to pick up surrounding noises, including conversations from colleagues. Additionally, they are not suitable for sports activities due to overheating issues. It would be beneficial for Sennheiser to consider reintroducing physical buttons for volume and other controls.

    I may be be wrong but I do think that only Sony headphones have LDAC because it is owned by Sony. Every Android phone has LDAC, though, since it has been added to the AOSP.
    I’ve looked at the specs on Bose, B&W, Focal and they have SBC, AAC, AptX Adaptive (Bose only supports SBC and AAC though). I’ve also experienced much more drop outs using LDAC compared to AptX HD or adaptive. They are all lossy anyway so the sound quality has more to do with the DAC, amp, DSP and the drivers than the Bluetooth codec used.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Рік тому

      Thanks for sharing that info about all the different brands. LDAC is definitely not as strong a codec in terms of reliability and range, but consistently sounds better when all else is equal.

    I've just finished a month of testing all the various notable contenders that I could gather, using Amazon's generous return policy. I rolled around deep and dirty with all of them. At the end of the day, I'm holding up, steady and high, the Sennheisers. None of the others were "bad" per say, a testament to how spoiled we are these days, but the momentum 4's are clearly the adult in the room. Bonus if you have aptx-hd, but they still sound absolutely beautiful on the basic codecs. The comfort and usability is also very enjoyable, and intuitive. Keep up the great work "passion", you're a good one. 16:00

      … I’m currently sitting with momentum four and PX eight- trying to decide which one to keep. PX eight has more sharp punch, clarity, and detail. Momentum four is more soft and warm with deeper bass. The PX eight is preferable because of the detail and clarity, but it also has a very weird sound to it. I don’t know if it’s just the Bluetooth sound compared to wired. I almost want to keep the momentum four, even though it’s not as detailed, but the softness and warmth to it covers up the weirdness of the Bluetooth sound. The M4 is more digestible, easier listening. PX eight sometimes is a little harsh.

    • @gldphish6907
      @gldphish6907 11 місяців тому +1

      @@ThomasThePoet The only times I've thought the PX8 is harsh was with very old brass instrument music, you're most likely bothered by the upper mids. I know when the PX8 came out some people thought they had very sharp treble, but I've found it to actually be upper mids. I even increased the treble by +2 from the B&W app and it made them sound more open. You could always add separate EQ to see if you can make the sound more palatable. I originally intended to buy the Sennheiser, but their MTW3 earbuds broke after two months of use and I kind of lost faith in the modern Sennheiser, that and the lack of physical buttons I guess.

    Ok, after 2 months with the sennies, I have to say this: this is my 4th pair of Sennheiser's, I have a pair of 660S2's and a pair of 800S's that both feature amazing sound quality; the 3rd pair are my old HD1's that the 4 is supposed to replace. Ummm...NO. No, no, no. No matter they sound almost as good as the Focal Bathys for a lot less, no matter whatever other good things you can say about them, they have 2 big failings that caused me to give them away. First and most important, they absolutely suck at connectivity. Phone, computer, my Wiim streamer, the television, it doesn't matter; they cannot hold a stable connection unless you turn the bitrate down to it's lowest level. Sound quality means nothing if you can't get through an entire song without stuttering. Second, and this may not matter to many, these things sound absolutely awful when plugged in as passive monitors. Truely terrible. I could forgive the latterr, but the former makes them useless and therefore worthless. Sorry, Sennheiser, I'm your biggest fan, but these things are trash.

    I’m still in stitches over this ridiculous new Hed Unity headphone that is asking us to pay $2,199 for tech that is already obsolete. I pity the gullible folks who cough up that price when high resolution Bluetooth and Wi-Fi codecs are already underway for a fraction of the cost (not to mention MQAir).
    I have no idea what the folks at this startup were thinking (weren’t they even aware that HEDD already trademarked that brand name ages ago?) 🙄

      @PassionforSound  Рік тому +1

      I wasn't familiar with Hed Unity - I'll have to check it out. I think MQAir is probably dead in the water at this stage though so there's probably one less competitor. 🙂 (Unless they sell the tech to a different company)

    Refrain from buying this headphone as they have lot of bugs - hissing sound with anc on, auto mute in the middle of a meeting. Sound quality is good but at this price point it should perform as an all rounder.

      Have you tried the latest update? I didn't experience these issues, but I might not have used them in the same circumstances as you (e.g. for video meetings)

      Make sure to get the latest FW update. I use them as my daily driver, music, work, meetings, etc., and they paused (while on ear and in use) 2 times in 6 months. There's a sensor in the cup, perhaps check for debris etc.
      Keep in mind that the BT signal can become disturbed in certain 'signal rich' area's (work, airports, etc). ANC should not hiss.

      @@PassionforSound HD 560s, i did some tuning on EQ for the m4s but my HD 560s is basically the equivalent.
      I'm not a professional headphone person, but i do enjoy music so i bought it as an upgrade and learned that M4s are good for use outside of the PC (which is why i liked them) but studio open back headphones are better for music. So i felt unimpressed with the quality as it all sounded blended together until i tuned it with app which made the bass sound separated and not merged.
      Basically, i thought that Sennheiser wireless headphones for 413 $ would offer me a better quality than (hd 560s) 230$ headphones (more $ = better which i was wrong ofc)
      I'm thinking about returning them now in exchange for *maybe* upgrading to HD 650 - i read some on this and heard however these are not exactly an "upgrade" necessarily since its based on preference after all and is a bit different compared to 560s. I thought it would just be a raw upgrade like new Logitech headset generations, but its not really like that i read.

      You're comparing two very different products. The HD560S needs a DAC and amp which are not free. They also can't take calls with mic, provide active noise cancelling, transparency mode, or operate wirelessly.
      Wired headphones with a good DAC and amp will always outperform wireless products in my experience. They're for very different purposes.

      @@PassionforSound i dont use AMP and it sounds good without one, better than m4 - my purpose was for listening to music with the added benefit of mobility. I lean more towards quality of music however, so I'm willing to sacrifice DAC requirement for better audio quality.
      And yes i realized its different

      Any suggestions for the best wired headphones that don't require a DAC or amp? Something in a similar price range or up to $250?

    Thumbs down for sneaking the ad into over half the sound quality time stamp in an attempt to justify revenue on the spot you know some people will click right to thinking its a detailed sound quality review instead of an advert with no stamp

      No payment here and I'm still using these as my primary wireless headphone today (although I'm a very rare user of wireless headphones). I've had no issues with mine in their limited use, but I have heard that others have had troubles. I can only share my experiences.
