Thumbs up - I’m not hating on your work . Yes I’m am a roofer I always like to do things right . That home owner will still get 30 years out of the shingle. There’s times I do want to give Custermer s a perfect job I always recommend take old Roof off and start fresh . One layer . But sometimes and most of the time they just don’t have the funds to do a rip off. If that’s the case cause I know I run into that a lot where Custermer cannot afford for me to do a rip off . My years on warranty on labor will be less . I won’t warranty a job if I don’t take it all off . I will but not for long . So when I re roof . I re paper entire Roof then go over it . Sometime I can’t even do that cause they don’t have a lot of money for the extra materials. Lol. So u did it looks good there’s no leaks and they happy you got paid clean up job sight that’s all that matters . No one know s the situation why you did it that way . People just want to study your nail placement . No one is on the roof watching any roofer . Every ones nail every roofer out there I’m sure every shingle nail placement is not perfect . Unless you gonna use a tape measure. For each shingle place the nail exactly where on the instructions of each bundles says to put the nail . 1inch 1-1/2 from the ends and 11-5/8 in . But who follows instructions. Nice job enjoys the vid.
Never felt a roof over for 1. Need to but the new shingle into the bottom of the old shingles is it called a butt e run.they lay flat this way. The way he's doing it you may be nailing it into a void.only install on three tab shingle .can't do on damentional shingle
@Matt Castillo only do but and run on three tab shingle .if you don't get ice jams and good!!!!!! vetalation!!!!!! .rows are stair and flat they last .not every roof is ment for it.if u ru into wall add new flashcards with shingle
2 nd layer shingling Going too fast . Nails must be plum.. no knowledge of roof condition or underlay.. missing nails.. he didn't even drop a line for square. eyeballing the entire job makes for a sloppy 3rd rate hack job at best..not my house!
actually when he starts a new row going up he does finish off the shingle from the previous row. his last nail i think is the one that is finishing off the other shingles he laid earlier
Everybody siding with this " roofers " video speaking about building codes being different in different areas are obviously not educated journeyman in this trade , this installation will not be accepted for warranty from the manufacturer due to improper installation which does not vary from state to state , the ONLT interstate variances in install are nailing pattern for high wind areas , then the use of ice & water shield , everything else stays the same . #1 defect , starter shingle is 100% wrong , if using 3 tabs for starters the tabs are supposed to be trimmed off so the " tar line " of the starter shingle meets the drip line of the drip edge metal , that way the gutter edge shingle is secured at the leading edge by the tar strip , leaving the tabs on & flipping the shingle puts the tar line of the starter shingle away from the edge which leaves the 1st course of shingles unattached at the edge . #2 defect is again starter shingle , industry standard is that starter shingle be used around ALL PERIMITER EDGES , even the rake or gable edges need starter strips , the rake starter shingle is supposed to be installed the same as the drip starter shingle , all 3 tabs cut away & the tar line of the rake starter meeting up with the outer edge of the drip metal , the rake starter is to secure the rake edge of shingles to a continuous tar strip to avoid wind uplift , most shingle applicators skip the rake starter all together , because most don't even know it's needed but needed it is , the missing rake starter strip is the cause of most "blow offs " where home owners insurance will not pay for repairs . #3 possible defect , missing ice & water shield at perimeter , if this home gets snow on its roof then ice shield at gutter edge is a must for all snow zones , the lack of ice shield will allow water from ice dams to flow uphill , then into the homes outer wall , ice shield should be a minimum of 12 inches into the heated interior of the home , with the entire unheated exterior roof deck covered 100% , ice & water shield codes only apply in states where it snows regularly & are not open to exclusion , many shingle installers skip installing ice shield because it's material cost is over $50 a square for cheap material & will only leak with ice dams . The missing rake edge starter strip is mandatory nationwide , the improperly installed gutter edge starter strip is mandatory nationwide , it's bullshit that " shingle applicators " pull this kind of scrappy workmanship because it giver real ROOFERS a bad name , should this home owner apply for the manufacturer 20-30 yr warranty he'd find out his roof is not eligible for the manufacturer warranty because of faulty installation , and missing components , what I just wrote is not personal opinion , nor does it vary from state to state , I posted factual industry guidelines for nation wide installation in all climate zones
I agree completly on a proper roof that's been torn off and papered the right way, but what's the point in doing any of that when it's a freaking nail over to begin with. That's the first and worst defect of all, Nail over!!...
Looks like he has a good work ethic and he's not sloppy/dirty. Just needs some good guidance on the mistakes he's made. Keep up the hard work, we all learn by doing and we get better with experience.
first thing i dont like is nailingyour starter without at least almost lining it all the way up cause once you nail it and the move it it takes away from your other corner and could be short or long depending
good roofer. I like that paper cutter. Straight cuts. I like straight. I use tin snips and a speed square. Don't need 5 nails. Package says 4. Won't have to reload so often.
Great job voiding your customers warranty..... shingle nailing and laying instructions are on every bundle somebody that lays them like you should probably read every bundle. Then try again
On a roof over consider NESTING the new second layer when going over the 3 tab.. Way better results all around its how certainteed and most manufactures suggest. itstead of flopping them anywhere you want, NESTING has every shingle of the roof over laying smooth with no voids in-between the two layers. look that shit up and do it. its faster too. butt the top of your new shingle to the bottom of the three tab. boom boom boom. its takes a lil bit of prep on the first three course. once you try it you'll see and never do it any other way. its better period. good luck.
He is doing a good job. There is nothing wrong with his nailing pattern. He is real consistent at what he is doing. If the customers did not want to pay for the roof to be removed it looks like he is doing an excellent job. Keep up the good work.
Roofing not easy do it just about every week . Gives your body a beating. I love doing it . He's doing a good job I would had love to see on a re roof paper down over old shingles but depends on Custermer and how much they are looking to spend not always up to roofer we all know there's a right way and or we may need to leave certain step out . If if has to do costing extra and if Custer doesn't want to pay fo additional steps . Then they get what they pay for or labor warranty will be shorten as far as leaks . But yes for me to guarantee a perfect job 100 per I need to take entire old roof off down to plywood. But sometimes Custermer s cannot afford it . But if gonna do a re roof protect yourself out paper over old shingle s as of it was plywood same way drip edges if possible and ice shield in valley s .
well, I aint gonna say nothing bout this one lmao. but if you really wanna see speed and basics, tips and tricks, how to's and how not to's. come on over to my channel and watch one of my many videos, unlike most of the people in these comments (much like some of the haters on my page) when I left hater comments I uploaded videos to back it up. enjoy, thanks for learning with me and lets help the roofing community grow together. not this business owner bs either. im talking bout the mf shaaaaanglers boiii!
I thought he did great, also the fact he had to hammer one nail in let's me know he didn't have air too high to avoid blow throughs. I will tell you what I know about re-roofing though. You're supposed to cut the second and first or just second row (I forget) off or else you're gonna have a noticeable hump on the bottom, also though not necessary we would yank the old drop edge off the sides and trim the old shingles to the facial, slap some new drip edge on then roof it. This makes it look torn off. A good re-roofing job should look like a one layer roof from the ground.
I love how everyone is a critic! The Roofing over another roof is okay it's what the customer pays for we are aloud 2 layers. the pitch is okay it is a 4 pitch, rubber is for a flat roof we are aloud to put shingles on a roof as little as a 2 pitch. the nail pattern is fine also.
Shingling over an old roof isn't such a good idea. Tear off the old roof first or you'll get problems, it won't look so good and won't last near as long. Live and learn.
He's got some tricks for sure.. but what good is speed if the job is done wrong? now the ladies roof is extra heavy and suffocating. now that her attic is gonna be overheating you've created a problem with sweating, which will create mold. And it's true, that lower gable is looking pretty flat to me, probably should have went with some tpo or epdm and tied in shingles at the pitch change
This is one crazy video. I am not sure why he had not taken it off of here. There are so many negative comments. I agree that he skipped some nails, put some to close together and seemed to more concerned about speed. I drive public transit and it drives me up the wall when people brag about the big vehicles, forklifts, ect. they can drive. When I have watched them, they are fooling themselves. This seem like a guy that tells how fast he can lay them, yet without the correct professional abilities. I would not hire him at all.
This guy may be fast putting shingles down but he doesn't nail worth a damn. At best, only 3/4 of the shingle is getting nailed. That would void any warranty if the shingle manufacturer inspected the roof.
2/12 roof pitch with shingles, over another roof......and he isn't nailing high. so all the nails will be rusted out in a year...if the roof lasts that long.
Yeah it's steeper than that and he's nailing so both the higher and lower shingle gets a nail through, but he's nailing low every once and awhile when he's bump firing. Also, why would you start at the middle of the shingle. Leaving no nails at the right hand side. Layover, no new d edge at rakes, 3 tabs for starter...I like the use of the cutter though - nice even lines. What are these, Atlas?
and not nailing your end nail when your right there anyways and your done with it.makes no sense but other then that i like how you work i can tell you do it everyday.ive been shingling 16 years every single day no lie.also didnt see you pull out a hammer theres no way all those nails went in perfect especially on a go over.but good job bro
why does he only nail in half a shingle at a time? where are his knee pads? why is he going over 3/4 of old roof? ive been nailing for a couple years i dont like this guys style its an idea to use a paper chopper to make your steps and i would think they would be nice st8 cuts but i think it would take same amount of time with a knife
+J Alvizo I just did a 300 sq ft section of my roof. I learned from reading the shingle manufacturer's instructions, the California roofing code and from watching hundreds of videos on UA-cam. Almost every UA-cam video has serious errors in it. Even this video is pretty bad. In general, roofers are pretty sloppy. This guy's nailing is sloppy. But if they get little wind up there, then it won't matter much. I laid laminate shingles just like this guy. It cost me $400 in parts and saved me about $1300 by not hiring roofers. I got two estimates. I ended up doing a much better job than any professionals, but it was hard work. I'm in my late 50's and tearing off a 50 year old tar and gravel roof by my lonesome self was hard work. Watching this guy makes me feel for his back and legs. He's in good shape to be able to be bent over for that long. It's hard work, and you have to do everything right, but it's not rocket science. Just understand how to do a valley properly and take your time to do it right. I'm very happy with the results I got. It was a challenge for me to do my own roof. There were so many things I had to learn and figure out, because almost every roofer has his own ways of doing things, and even the manufacturers have some bad ideas about how to install a roof. Especially when it comes to valleys. A 4 foot steel ruler was my most used tool. Use synthetic paper instead of felt. It's so much better than felt. Do not use 3 tabs. Use laminates. They are so much better than 3 tabs. A closed cut valley is $50 to $100 cheaper than an open cut valley. Be sure not to nail through the sheathing on the overhangs. The key to shingles not blowing off is not really the nails, but the glue. Wrap the paper over the edges over the roof and cover with drip edge. The sheathing is most vulnerable at the edges. Felt can't wrap over the edges. But paper synthetic paper can. It makes for far better protection. Never walk in the valleys or on the ridges. These are fragile parts of a roof. I primed and painted the sheathing around the edges of the roof because the sheathing was 50 years old. When the drip edge is off is a great time to repaint the fascia boards. Might as well do some of the sheathing as well! This area is just very vulnerable to water damage, so seal it all up as well as you can. Hand nail your nails. It's slow, but it's a far better method than a gun. I don't know. I didn't see my roof as just a chore. I saw it as a challenge. And the end result is extremely rewarding. I can't stop looking at my roof and marveling at what I was able to accomplish all on my own. It's beautiful and I feel confident that it's done well.
to the worker.....? would rather have your roof done profeshnal or just assuming that the shingles are strait. like leaving gaps in between a shingle. It not about doin it fast it about getting it done right Unless if you are good at it.
hook blade! no he used a shingle cutter it's more accurate! lines are only used on hips and valleys... he nails the shingle 14 inches over from the end because he gets the end nail on the next run. probly because it's a closer run of nails. from what I can see he is nailing it on the nail lines. very skilled individual!!
Not really, nails should be distributed throughout the shingle to ensure even grip. But since you're a savant on shingling I'm guessing you know that. Also, who the fuck brings a paper cutter to a roof? When a hook blade can be more effective without added weight. Not impressed
So many haters. Lol. Nice work bro! No doubt you've been roofing for some time. Not sure what all the nailing fuss is all about. Looks efficient and clean to me.
The Chef you’ve a 6 nail pattern in Florida to New York, he’s doing the old 5 nail pattern, nothing wrong with it, it’s not the new regulations. Especially on a re roof, especially one going directly over the old shingles, the granulated shingle won’t soak the new shingle down in the underlayment.
People really talking shit. This guys is a great roofer. Dude is well coordinated. Makes way for everything. One thing is for sure is his nailing pattern. But that doesnt mean he blew threw the shingle or anything. Remember he could be doing a job In county or city or anywhere in america. Every place has different regulations on nailing. Roofing in Florida is very difficult we have to use tar cement on just about everything our nailing has to be perfect with 6 nails and were are not aloud to use 3 tab shingles for starters. This guys works very clean and fast. He probably nails better in different parts of the city were the local codes ask for a change. Great job
+sd-dirt Actually if you watch when he throws down the next shingle and puts a nail in to place it he double taps and that second nail is actually going into the end of the shingle prior.
+sd-dirt , I always nail the last nail on my next run. it's faster and I don't have to reach across the whole shingle. watch and see I get the last nail when I shingle the next shingle.
Your installing new shingles over top of old shingles, what a piss-pour-job and he didnt even nailed every single that he installed to which he is not that fast
Dude, you are fast. No knee pads, you just stay low the low to the ground and no stop firing. Extremely efficient, great video.

Well said Tony
Best cutting method I have seen. also I thought of cutting shingles with a paper cutter.
2 nd layer shingling Going too fast . Nails must be plum.. no knowledge of roof condition or underlay.. missing nails.. he didn't even drop a line for square. eyeballing the entire job makes for a sloppy 3rd rate hack job at best..not my house!
I’d hire him in a heart beat . He’s fast , no wasted moves .
Other then the lay over this guy has one of the best nails patterns I've seen on youtube.
You're kidding about the nail pattern, right?
Baddddddd job hack!!!! How not to install a roof not even nailing the whole shingle across wtf
actually when he starts a new row going up he does finish off the shingle from the previous row. his last nail i think is the one that is finishing off the other shingles he laid earlier
When your singling in that position the way he does it is understandable
No over hang is my concern lmao
Yes ur right hes not talk about no nails on key way 😂 it’s like nails one end then skips 12 to 13 inches lmao

Who gives a fuck it's a shoot over. There's no warrenty any way
101 😆😆 more like 102 ways how not to nail Shingles
I feel bad for the guy that as to rip all that shitgle off. And do the job right. 😔
The first wind storm will be peeling off a lot of shingles.
Looks like he has a good work ethic and he's not sloppy/dirty. Just needs some good guidance on the mistakes he's made. Keep up the hard work, we all learn by doing and we get better with experience.
I like how you nail the end of the previous step as you set the next. Im going to try that one. Also what gun is that? Seems to nail smoothly
forget everything you just seen total hack job the nailer is a bostich ridgerunner
So many things wrong with the job, but he's consistent
Real fast roofer, amazing
Hi! What kind of cutter is that?
first thing i dont like is nailingyour starter without at least almost lining it all the way up cause once you nail it and the move it it takes away from your other corner and could be short or long depending
Random nail positions? Who taught this guy how to nail? When half the shingle doesn't get nailed properly wait until the first wind storm comes along.
If you are a roofer then you would know he did it right. He nailed the part he left when he was in the next row. Watch the video again.
good roofer. I like that paper cutter. Straight cuts. I like straight. I use tin snips and a speed square.

Nail positioning and the correct amount so important...this guy is just trying to nail fast instead of correct...
Roofing not easy do it just about every week . Gives your body a beating. I love doing it . I need that cutting tool.
Keep the shingles cold and just use a skill saw I remove the guards on mine little dangerous don't want nobody else run it
I thought he did great, also the fact he had to hammer one nail in let's me know he didn't have air too high to avoid blow throughs. I will tell you what I know about re-roofing though. why nail starter in middle not the lower edge
Kandice Trevino I would have cut the tabs off the starter and flipped them around.
layin it down with the wind nail!
I use a hook on the rake's but I find it faster gives a nice straight cut, easier, to use the cutter.
can't tell on my phone if high nailing but a nail over is bad enough..not always contractor fault tho!!
That my friend is far from a 4/12 pitch, look again.. It's barely a 2/12
I always wanted to just show up and shingle but we have to rip first ;(
Shingling over an old roof isn't such a good idea. Tear off the old roof first or you'll get problems, it won't look so good and won't last near as long. Live and learn.
The thing is, sometimes the homeowner is to cheap to get it done properly and wants the overlay
Hard to watch.
Atta boy good work
Isnt the pitch on that roof too low for shingles?
John Bryant it is definitely a flat roof.
Especially without an underlayment
He's got some tricks for sure.. but what good is speed if the job is done wrong? now the ladies roof is extra heavy and suffocating. now that her attic is gonna be overheating you've created a problem with sweating, which will create mold. And it's true, that lower gable is looking pretty flat to me, probably should have went with some tpo or epdm and tied in shingles at the pitch change
He can do my roof anytime .There are a lot off sidewalk Superintendents on here talking shite
Poster child for a poor roof job! Many examples of exactly what not to do...
I am not a roofer but i have 2 questions. Are the shingles supposed to be straight. And is nail position important.
This is one crazy video. I am not sure why he had not taken it off of here. There are so many negative comments. i think we're all over looking one thing here, that's a bad ass shirt.
Like how he doesn't put down his gun go man
wrf...buddy ure out
like 4.inches
Good roofing bro
Who would dislike the skills this guy has to work like a pro...
He does half ass nailing.
This guy may be fast putting shingles down but he doesn't nail worth a damn. At best, only 3/4 of the shingle is getting nailed. That would void any warranty if the shingle manufacturer inspected the roof.
Three nails in the same location saves tons of time
2/12 roof pitch with shingles, over another roof......and he isn't nailing high. so all the nails will be rusted out in a year...if the roof lasts that long.
nailing high would be bad.
you should never nail high and this is a 4 /12
Yeah it's steeper than that and he's nailing so both the higher and lower shingle gets a nail through, but he's nailing low every once and awhile when he's bump firing. There's no way that's a 4/12.
Buen trabajo yo trabaje 10 años en eso de poner shingle.no mas que dejo de no poner papel que va de bajo.
and not nailing your end nail when your right there anyways and your done with it.makes no sense but other then that i like how you work i can tell you do it everyday.ive been shingling 16 years every single day no lie.also didnt see you pull out a hammer theres no way all those nails went in perfect especially on a go over.but good job bro
at least you're wearing a RATM tshirt. 👍
Washington state roofers kicks ass
Can someone Tell me what that Tool is called?
Paper cutter dude old school
People always hating I don't like how he doesn't nail his starter into the fecia but seems good to me shouldn't blow off
This roof can't be getting inspected.
why do not nail the shingle
Fucking love man jeeez never thought about it
home owner special enough said
Nice job
why does he only nail in half a shingle at a time? where are his knee pads? why is he going over 3/4 of old roof? ive been nailing for a couple years i dont like this guys style its an idea to use a paper chopper to make your steps and i would think they would be nice st8 cuts but i think it would take same amount of time with a knife
yeah I did this roof and all the shingles are still there and it's not leaking none have blown away! I got paid and customer is still happy!
I seen a Spanish roofer using similar style with holding the gun the entire time. Was that hard to learn? While still keeping straight lines
You are not nailing properly, missing all your right sides
@@Husseinjawid378 he's nailing the right side as he comes up the next run.
Que bueno por que no se como ponerlos y estoy aprendiendo con tu video hoy mismo los voy a installar
Why did they show him pre-cutting the shingles in the beginning of the video?
those were the first shingles he was using, you wanna stagger them.
To show that he doesn’t know how to use a hook blade!!!
you should always do a complete tear off or at least that's the way I've been shown how to do it
If the base shingles are tight and roof has had no leaks, then 3 layers are not unheard of.
People will not always pay to tear off. They want cheap as possible so I understand this.
wait you did pull your hammer out i take that back lol
the third one you missed a nail
No overhang on gutter
guys a badass. gonna try my first one
I wouldn't let y'all roof my damn bird house. What kinda fuckin jackwagon does roof-overs any more?
Layer me n my team scrap old layers off one house had four layers its hard asf scraping shitty jobs like this
Wow that's bad ass, i want to learn to do that so i dont have to pay anyone to do it.
1971SuperLead Actually fella the key to shingles not blowing off is to nail then in and only in the tar line!!!!!!
the hardest job in home construction next to concrete work is roofing. as u age, doing this, it kills your ankles. roof slope constant walking.
+BOYCOTT PC Yep your absolutely wright. I worked 30years on roofing and my back has had it, my ankles are fine though. Have a nice day.
Wear High Heel Platform shoes with angle to level your feet out!
Wtf u don't nail over shingle
This is why you should watch a couple youtube videos and just do it yourself...if can't be any worse than this
At 6:28 you can see crocked shingles. And the nailing is terrible. I guarantee a leak in a year
Roofing over old shingles. Tisk tisk.
you wouldn't want your nail within 6 inches of the seam, so he leaves a space of 14 inches or so! I get what he is doing good style
No bueno amigo mucho problemo
don't hate at least the dude working
looks good if he popped lines and 6 nailed
six nails are only code in some states. most states have 4 nails for code
depending on pitch
Why are you putting shingles on a damn near flat roof?
Depending on where you live it is fine. Most places in South snow doesn't set on roofs like north so this isn't a problem
to the worker.....? would rather have your roof done profeshnal or just assuming that the shingles are strait. like leaving gaps in between a shingle. It not about doin it fast it about getting it done right Unless if you are good at it.
Good title. Then the shingle cutter came out
Improper nail spacing when only half of the length of the shingle gets nailed.
But if he's on 6/12 or more he would have to change up his game no doubt
Fuck a layover! Plus, this kid is carpe diem scratched! Have fun w the leaks, you'll be back
See a few way high shingles bro
how about the fact that they are doing a "layover"... not even accepted by code enforcement where I live...
Throw the wrapper off the roof, lol. What ever you do, don't trim the tree so it's off the deck.
hook blade! no he used a shingle cutter it's more accurate! lines are only used on hips and valleys... he nails the shingle 14 inches over from the end because he gets the end nail on the next run. probly because it's a closer run of nails. from what I can see he is nailing it on the nail lines. very skilled individual!!
Not really, nails should be distributed throughout the shingle to ensure even grip. But since you're a savant on shingling I'm guessing you know that. Also, who the fuck brings a paper cutter to a roof? When a hook blade can be more effective without added weight. Not impressed
mattbrit1229 I like your video I do the same style lolol but to see you comment on your own vid in 3rd person I love it
this roof is to flat for shingles, should install modified bitumen there are some great peel and stick brands out there and faster to install
u missed a nail!!!
Holy shit. who nails half the shingle ?!? and the roof is flat !!!!
Great job
problem is, he's not nailing one end of the shingle. I watched, & he never renails the ends he left.
there is a manufacturer warranty requirement in regards to nail placement.
+sd-dirt Actually if you watch when he throws down the next shingle and puts a nail in to place it he double taps and that second nail is actually going into the end of the shingle prior.
+sd-dirt ,
I always nail the last nail on my next run. it's faster and I don't have to reach across the whole shingle. watch and see I get the last nail when I shingle the next shingle.
@El Barto You don't know what he charged.Tear down is a lot more money that the home owner may not have.
Your installing new shingles over top of old shingles, what a piss-pour-job and he didnt even nailed every single that he installed to which he is not that fast
Chalk line and hook blade is faster
You got balls posting a video of yourself roofing a second layer hahaha
Cutting like the butcher. That's the business.
