Great job!! If you want those threads really hidden, you could start about 1/2” or 3/4” below the top of your alteration seam, backstitch/reverse (sew backwards) to the top, then sew forwards/regularly. That way when you tie off the threads, the knot won’t show at all!
I used this to alter a romper that was too big, and now it fits my body perfectly-I had no idea such major alterations could be this simple! I don’t even have a sewing machine, I just hand-sewed it while watching a movie. Thanks for teaching me a useful life skill :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am just starting to alter my own clothes. Your video is exactly what I needed to know, and shows me how easy it can be. I love your patient, clear step-by-step instructions.
Well done. Another way I have done this is by taking the zip out and replacing it with a seam and use shirring elastic across the back panel which is ideal for those with yo-yo weight problems.
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for making this video! I bought a dress for my son's wedding and it's too big in the bust. This will be perfect to do to make it fit better.
me too , please teach us how to use sewing machine and basics, i have one but dont know anything about it or let us know where we can learn online?? thanks
The outcome of your alteration is impressive. I tend to add pins as you have and then use tailor's chalk and tack the material. Each to their own, whatever anybody finds the easiest.
*I have to alter many of my dresses too. I'm busty, but my waist is smaller. I love a fit and flare dress, they're so flattering. Your dress is lovely.*
Thank you for this. You gave some great tips and the finished product looked perfect on you. I don't have anyone to help me pin up a dress and you inspired me to just do it myself. You're the best!
I really appreciate your video! I’m slowly learning how different each pattern will fit! My measurements are an XL for the pattern I needed this help for because the arm holes are huge!
Great video : clear easy to follow instructions, great background music. Also nice to see beautiful manicured hands take us through every step Learned so much, thanks.
What a beautiful dress and a great colour on you ❤️ thanks for this. Just got a dress for family pictures but definitely to big in the armpit area. This helped a lot 🤗
thank you so much. I ordered a dress online and I absolutely hated it. After I did whatvyou showed in your video it fits perfectly and looks amazing. 😊
this is so great, thankyou. i just bought a dress from online and it turned out to be baggy around the bust. this has really helped me fix the issue thankyou :D
I just bought a shirt like this. There was only one, and it was too big for me, but it was on clearance for $1. I'm going to take it in and hopefully make it fit perfectly!
I usually buy my clothes a size or 2 up for the extra length, and my non-standard proportions. But I haven't done it in ages (Having lots of kiddos, didn't feel worth it!) And totally forgot what I was doing. 😂 Thank you for the refresher! ❤ The other thing about taking a dress in like this (Especially if you hand-sew!) Is if you then go up a size or so you can let the darts back out if it wasn't enough to need to cut it. :)
Thank You !!! I just bought (online from Old Navy) the most perfect fitting dress but the seams under the arm is to baggy .... I thought I was going to have to return the dress but I am going to give this a go .....
I'd say you would need to do the side without the zipper exactly the same, then on the side with the zipper, un stitch it then trim the amount you need to, then see it back on the same way it was sewn before
Any chance that you may have a video of; How to alter an oversized Kimono? I have one I need to fit to size & ICan’t seem to locate one here on UA-cam. You could be the first to post one. Just sayin. Thank you & have a great 😊 day
so i'm eyeballing a dress that is way too big (size 28/30) that is a perfect match for a blazer look. it's on clearance and I want to take it in down to a size 14. would love to keep it stretchy.
Hi, my problem is the shoulder straps are too long. I don't want to shorten it by making a seam on top of the shoulder. How would you shorten the straps?
@@nicolelise Thank you. Also considering doing 1-2 darts on either side of the zipper at the back. My skills are not at the level of removing the zipper and taking the dress in there either lol
Personally I’ve taken in pants on just one side because of a zipper, and that was enough for them to fit properly. It wasn’t noticeable. I think it just depends on how it’s made and how much you need to take in!
I did this and when I put the tank top on all the thread stitching broke. Since then I'm learning that the knit fabric requires zig zag stitching. Is there anything else I should know about sewing knit or stretch fabric? Thanks so much.
Oh no! I’m unfamiliar with the different stitches since the traditional stitch has worked for me! I know when using stretchy fabrics, it’s very important not to pull the fabric as you’re sewing it. I can’t recall any times I’ve needed to sew a tough fabric !
Hi I need some help, I bought alot of dresses in a size bigger than usual so I can tailor them cuz usually they don't fit great. So I have about 5 dresses, all which I tailored to the right fit, 4 of them fit however 1 does not, because the fabric does not have amy stretch, if I get rid of the new stitching or even make it smaller it will look like a bag on me so I'm not quite sure what to do because it doesn't quite go ever my head and hands even though it has a zip?
I have a dress that quite big on me but i really like it tho. Thinking of fix it up. Im size 10 normally for stretchy material dresses but that dress i have is size 12. Do think able to fix it up? 🤔🤔 can anyone help? Its long midi day dress with spilt at bottom and i love it but unsure what to do
It's so sad that schools no longer teach Home economics, the older generation all HAD to take it in school, a requirement. We learned how to sew, and cook and clean and so many important day to day things. I guess with 'women's liberation' the powers that be felt Home Ec was a waste, but I see lots of young girls wishing to know the basics.
@@ginagray603 Home economics courses were only offered to women until the 1970's and fell under fire under feminist movements for good reason: it pigeonholed women into certain roles. It was also a required course for women in many institutions. If it had been responsibly taught then maybe it would have lasted longer. Also, we should stop assuming "home economics" is something only "young girls" want to learn. It's a valuable skill that young boys should have as well.
@@ginagray603 Well it's a good thing inquiring young minds have plenty of resources to learn all those things outside of school if they really want to know how to do them. Frankly, I see way more young people know how to sew and cook now than I ever did when I was kid and the advent of the internet tutorial had yet to hit it's stride.
If it's an option, I would alter the princess seams, instead (the ones on the front of the dress, rather than those at the sides). That might be the best way to do it, anyhow, because, I think the bigger it is (meaning there will, by default, be more fabric between the straps, placing them wider on the shoulders than might be ideal, to begin with), the more fabric there will be between the straps than what would be on a smaller size, the more trouble one might have with straps falling off the shoulders, after the alterations, because they will be situated too far to the outside edge of the shoulder. It would be better if they were drawn in toward the neck, so they would end up sitting mid way between neck and outside of shoulder, where a straps of a properly-sized dress would sit.
I'm by no means a professional but I can tell you you over pinned. This isn't good for the garment because you're repeatedly poking holes into the fabric which during the sewing process can fray the materials causing holes in the newly made seams and worse.
Well, I never claimed to be a professional. And if you’re not a professional, like myself, and want to ensure you’re getting the seam you want, I like to pin as I did to ensure my work is even. Never experienced an issue with holes or other issues you describe.
I was disappointed, you start the video saying all you need is needle and thread, then you waffle in the middle and end up on a machine... I was specificallylooking for help by hand.
You can sew by hand the same way, using a needle and thread. It’s quicker to use a machine if you have one. If you don’t, sewing by hand accomplishes the task.
Hello! I never claimed to be a professional seamstress (nor are the people searching for DIY ways to make their clothes fit). Professional method or not, it works and no one would be able to tell the difference while wearing it. 🙂
Hi! I did not cut the excess because I didn’t find it necessary. However you’re welcome to cut the excess, personal preference.
I would do the same as you. Thanks for sharing
Personal preference perhaps better for weight fluntuators
Honestly everyone should do this, most store bought dresses aren’t suited for all our different shapes and sizes

Thank you! I am going to use this tutorial to fix several dresses for someone! Your voice is lovely and your hands are beautiful!
If you were doing this by hand, what kind of a stitch would you use? I don’t have a sewing machine. :)
I think backstitch is good for clothing because its strong and will hold the fabric well
So helpful! You got a lovely voice and nice manicure🥰

Very good tutorial. It was easy to follow the steps you did. Thanks
Great job!! However; You should put the pins in the opposite direction to make it much easier when sewing with machine
I sometimes forget to do that 🙂 you’re correct !
Great job . I think there are for issues with that brand dress. I have the same dress in blue and I had the same issue .
Did you trim the extra fabric from the sides after you sewed them??
I would keep it just in case!
Did you fold something over? I’m confused as to what exactly you did to get it to close up more
Your video Is easy to follow and understand! Great video... one question what if my zipper is on the side ?
Hmm great question. I’ve taken things up on only one side before, & it looked normal. Not sure if it works with every item though!
That's what I wondered.
I'd say you would need to do the side without the zipper exactly the same, then on the side with the zipper, un stitch it then trim the amount you need to, then see it back on the same way it was sewn before

I just can’t for the life of me sew that looks so much better on you after the adjustments
How do you know what stitch to use?
Good video:) Wondering if you or anyone here knows if she did a basic straight stitch?
You could use something called a backstitch i think. We learned it in school once and it looks really clean
This was really helpful! Thank you ☺️
Thanks, I learned something today

Hi, do you have any advice how to alter an oversized dress around the bust area; dress with sleeves?
Thank you!!!! It worked omg
If the dress has sleeves, do I need to take them off? The sleeves fit fine… it’s just the bust and back that gapes a bit. Zipper in the back as well
You don’t have to. Just be mindful of how you’re beginning and ending your seams.

I didn’t , no particular reason, but you can
Can you do a video about pants too tight and how to add fabric to make him lose.😉

This helpful because my son busted his lip because of his pants, and I want fix them before he hirts himself again.
Very Very nice

How would you go about this if the zipper is on the side of the dress?
I’ve taken up one side of pants before when the zipper was on the other. Or you could put two seams on the back.
Nice!
TThanks ❤

Do a video on altering a romper
To try it on do you try it on inside out after you pin?
I like to try things on regular, but it shouldn’t matter depending on how the dress is made.

Thanks for the video, but your machine isn’t threaded properly. The top thread should be behind the small piece at the top front of the needle.
