A good farrier is an absolute must for anyone who has horses in the UK. I grew up in Norfolk on a farm with working horses and the farrier was our best friend. I now live in South Africa and most horses here are kept barefoot. The conditions being dryer and better for barefoot horses. My grandad always made sure our farrier, Ben, got a Christmas and Birthday pressie. He said he was the most important man on the farm. I miss those days. It’s so lovely to see a young generation come up to continue the profession. Love your channel.

Merita seguirvi perché avete tutto: bravura, simpatia e, perché no, anche bellezza.

Such a joy watching the master and his hedge-monkey (sorry Tom): From 7 to 10 years old I was the bellows boy for the old smith/farrier in the village of Coton, near Cambridge! All through every school holiday I stood on a box pumping! Oh what wonderful memories and when I outgrew staying with my Aunt The old smith (I have photos) gave me a 1851 Dragoon guards sword and scabbard: I'm looking at it now!! Every young man needs a mentor to teach him things he'll never learn within the family! That is how boys become men, not just puppets of naive parents: I hope you both realise what you have in each other!!! I saw the "Shetland clip" Pretty but nasty little things, give me an Exmoor any day but my real love is "doznks" (donkeys). I understand them and they understand me! Tom, you're on a right track, never forget that the other mans grass always seems greener until you try it and find that it isn't! I'm sure you have the right teacher to bring you on to fill his shoes!!!

It shows the care that you feel for the animal. You are learning from a master at the craft. Mimic his ways with the horses and they will be come the best habits that you will have. Sam, am glad you were able to work with and learn the trade with your Dad. My long time farrier also had a son that I didn't realize had followed his Dad into the trade. My friends oldest daughter had been having my farriers son do her horses feet. Several yrs ago a news story came on about a missing hunter, turned out to be my farriers son, sadly after Search & Rescue crews looking for him for a couple of days, they found him deceased. :( He was in his early twenties and hunting on family property. Some type of accident while out on his own. So sad, as I never had the chance to see he and his Dad do their farrier work together. You are lucky to have spent that special quilty time with your Dad, and now you are passing on the skills to future generstions. So many trades are in danger of being lost if no one steps up to share with others what we've learned, either by trial and error or from others willing to share their hard earned skills. Keep doing what you love as it shows in both your treatment and interactions with both the horses (who always know who the best humans are, 🥰😉) and your interactions with Tom, you are a very patient, kind person, who never seems to get stressed out or impatient, which is sometimes hard to find in a teacher/mentor. ❤🥰 PS take care of your back as that is the worst pain ever, especially if you get your sciatic nerve injured.

Tom REALLY came through working hard and very competently. Well done lad! You earned overtime pay! At least a nice meal. Sam, take care of your back! After it heals maybe yoga would help work out the kinks and creaks. It’s so fun watching you work together as a team.

Loving these longer stories where we can see more of the things you do in a day. Tom is coming along so well and looking more expert in his trimming. He's so funny and could do stand-up comedy if he wants a change from farriering 😂

Third day for me watching, I caught up and watched a few yesterday. I have already passed on a few of your skill tips to a rescue here in the US they get horses that have really bad feet that have not been properly cared for perhaps EVER, or at least not since they last had a good owner. Loved today's video , it is such a pleasant thing to see horses with feet in such good nick, the ones you have been caring for for ages. Shows that your work has enduring quality. Also hoping that some of your clients have some big drafts/shires as again the rescues I support in the US are so often rescuing the big Belgians at kill auctions that the Amish work so hard, and many of the old school men do very little hoof care, seldom train them to the stocks and by the time their hoofs are so broken down with the coffin bone ready to come through the sole or severe abcess problems, even if their body health isn't too bad, so many have to be euthanized. Recently one rescue got in a Belgian mare that was pregnant (yes she was in a kill auction) . Her feet were so badly broken down she could barely walk and was in immense pain. They were going to have to euthanize even though she was in foal, but between the hard work of their farrier and their vet they managed to keep her comfortable until she could foal. She had to be kept in a double large box stall as there was no way she could go out on the fields with those painful feet. She foaled and managed to take care of the little stud colt for as long as possible but in the last video from Pony Tales Rescue on u tube, the vet and the staff determined that they could not let her go any longer, the pain was not manageable with pain meds or padded boots, she was in horrific pain. So, for a few days they found a little pony to befriend her foal as he had never been out of the box and as soon as they became friends, the vet came and the mare was euthanized. The rescues that I support are in a network here in the US and they call the euthanizing The Last Act of Kindness. They love on whatever horse it is for days in advance, if possible bring them out on lead to munch green grass and groom them and give them treats. For those last days in their lives they receive all the love and kindness the staff can give. But sometimes they do get the big drafts that have just been sent to auction because the Amish have too many and it is always wonderful to see how they bloom after a few weeks of being loved on, groomed and pampered. They even work with them on groundwork and do the best they can to make them familiar with saddle work and then people come and get them for trail horses or hunters come for pack horses. Their farrier works his butt off on them, they are not trained for the stocks and many have to be a tad sedated, and sometimes I have to close my eyes when he is working on shoeing them as it gets to be quite the rodeo and the stocks even though heavy duty take a beating. Ya so hope we get to see you do some of the big drafts.

@@margodumelle8660 That is hard to watch, or be the vet giving it. But like the human doctors that sometimes have to follow the patients living will or the family, wishes for their member, they have to turn off the artificial life support machines. Not everyone can do these things, but thanks be to God that there are people who can do the hard jobs. We all should be asking for blessings for those that work with the sick and dying whether human or animal, they need our understanding and our prayers.

Thank you, Claudia, for your deeply moving and interesting post. I hate the fact that so many talented and truly loving people involved with horse rescue have to cope with appalling consequences of a particular sects uncaring treatment of all animals. I will certainly include the rescuers and support staff in my prayers. I hope the boys read you post.
