that's pretty good considering you didn't pre chill the cooler for 12 to 24 hours and then you put a 12 pack of warm beer in and had it sitting in 130 degree temperatures. 3 days is pretty good

I have all three of first generations, and from my personal experience. I bought an ice maker counter kind , fill bags up in deep freezer. I seldom buy store ice ,however when I do I notice significant ice melt compared to my hard solid ice pieces. Hope that helps also freeze milk jugs and they will keep it really cold and last a long time.
+George Kershner yea i totaly agrer with you, store ice melts pretty fast compared to other block ice. This test was kinda aimed at the "quick trip" person who would have no other choice than store Ice. I always try and deep free ive bags too. last way longer, also put salt in those milk jugs and its WAY colder!
good review I like to keep gallon ice cream buckets in the freezer. throw 1 or 2 in the cooler drinks and bag ice. I have the big ice blocks long after the little bag ice is gone. not reinventing the wheel here know. bit it works very well and it's free
+gunnuts82 yea i found that if you put like 5-10 teaspoons of salt into the water when you put them In the freezer it makes that block ice last longer. The block ice is the way to go for sure! Especially if your looking to make it last as long as possible. Thanks for watching man !

Great info and real world applications. Wasn't so much worried about the contents even though you're cooler contents looks just like mine would ;) I was more curious about how the coolers would compare to each other when tested in hot weather. So a test just like your last video but with all the coolers in the same 100+ degree weather. A lot of people say the roto-molded coolers aren't worth the cost when you only use them for the day or even two days. When you did the last comparison the temps were pretty mild and all of the coolers performed pretty close to each other. But I would bet $$ the roto-molded coolers would really outperform the cheaper coolers when it's really hot out like it was in this test. Thanks again for listening and taking the time to do these videos!

Yeah I kind of wish I had all the coolers with me but at the time I only had the rtic :( judging by the outcome of this test i can only imagine the other coolers performing a little bit worse or just a little bit better (depending on brand) . But in the long run I mean I don't think any of these coolers would have lasted more than three days with any ice in them. I think it would be hard for any cooler to handle that kind of test for an extended period of time. Especially without being pre-cooled. To me that's the game changer
With that really hot weather... warm beer and bot pre cooling the cooler w ice or putting cold beer in it kinda makes sense... if you started w cold beer from the rip thw ice wouldnt have melted nearly so fast

Thanks - great job a true test as I would typically use the cooler. The other 5 day challenges are pointless fulling it with ice and nothing else. I just need to know how long my beer will stay cold.

Ok, so this was more “real world” than a cooler full of ice and two cans of beer, that gets opened three times a day. However, if you’ve got a cooler full of food and beverages for a camping trip, that cooler is getting opened dozens of times a day - more with a family. It’s still not totally realistic, but it’s giving the average joe a better idea of how ice really fares in a high end cooler.

You should do the same test with a “cheap” cooler and see what the results are. I’m pretty sure it won’t do well compared to the RTIC, but I could be wrong

I was going to ask about what this costs, but there is an ad above the comments......Walmart has one for $27.99.........a far cry from one of those over priced Yeti coolers! Wow, yet people will still buy the Yeti.....more dollars than sense! I bet the Yeti would not do much better.

Truth Quest 123, I don't know what set you off. I guess you are one of the idiots that wasted your money on a ice chest you could get at half the price. I knew nothing about any anti 2nd amendment views Yeti coolers has, or doesn't have. No, I just think the damn things are too high priced. It's a ice chest, not a status symbol. If you yuppies think it's cool to waste your money that way, have at it! If the anti 2nd thing is true, I'd much rather spend my $400 on a new revolver that an ice box!
Water is the enemy of ice. If you want your ice to last you HAVE to drain out the water.
I agree with your testing method of putting in warm drinks and not pre-chilling the cooler, sometimes in the "real world" you just don't have time for that crap. However, if someone is going on a multiple day trip somewhere, they likely have enough time to plan ahead. Putting all those beers in the refrigerator overnight and throwing two ice packs and 4-5 cups of ice in the cooler overnight would have given you I bet another two days.
As an absolute last resort, literally throwing the garden hose in the cooler just to take the heat out of it will prolong the life.
If you put ice in a warm cooler, the first hour of the ices life is spent bringing the cooler down to temp.
I would disagree, Air is the actual enemy of ice. When you drain the water, you need more ice to cool the air in the cooler. The water on the bottom actually helps your ice last longer. Pelican coolers actually say in the directions to fill the cooler with water 1/4 full to have maximum ice retention. just an opinion, thanks for watching man!
100% agreed, pre chilling of any kind helps SO MUCH, and i would recommend for any length of trip you're taking.
That's not true. If you have a mixture of ice and water, the water will stay the same temperature as the ice (32ºF) until all of the ice has melted.
@@andrewt3593 brrrr. Wrong! Water is a good conductor (of heat) but is a terrible insulator. Air is a better insulator because it is a gaseous substance, therefore its spread-out molecular configuration resists heat transfer to some degree. Why do you think these coolers have such large walls? Because the FOAM inside of them is mostly made of AIR.
Air will retain its cold temperature and be resistant to outside influences of heat better than water.
Good review, it did melt the ice fast but it did have to cool everything up. Still a good cooler for the money next to a yeti$$$

I dont see the point in buying yeti anymore. The quality of rtic has been great for me, and yeti is proven to be no better for 3x the amount lol

Freddy Ard 65 is pretty heavy especially fill of ice & beer. I'de go with the 45 for multi day trips or your boat. Thanks for the comment

I can imagine the ice wouldn't last nearly as long if the lid was being opened and closed regularly throughout the day too.
Since heat rises and cold settles, you'd be surprised how little it does. That's why chest freezers are so efficient and fridges aren't as much. Opening a fridge door causes all the cold air to fall out when the door is opened.

As for realism... I mean, I GET not tryna OPTIMIZE conditions. But people on camping trips go outta there way to put the cooler in the noonday sun day after day? Still-good work
That cooler doesn't even hold enough beer to last a camping weekend in 100 degree heat so why even be appalled that it didn't last that long? If you want your ice to last longer dont crush it up and just put the bag in the bottom and stack your stuff on top of it and keep the cooler in a bit of shade. A regular igloo cooler will last you 5 - 6 days like that.

That’s not totally “real world” for me, this is more worst case scenario imo, I’ve always pre-cooled my ice chests the night before, l make sure everything going into it was cold already, I have 2- 5lb artic ice chillin brew ice packs that freeze at 28 degrees and where ever I went I kept it in the shade. But I get it, if I’m taking the Jeep wheeling over a weekend, ice will be melted by time I go home, I don’t think their big 110 qt system would last 10 days under those conditions but also realistically, the beer had better be gone before the ice is 😂 nice review 👍

Thank you thank you thank you!! Great review. All oh these expensive coolers hold ice the same amount of time as the standard 40.00 blue igloo cooler. What you are getting is a well built cooler. I bought a igloo sportsman rotomolded cooler and I had the same ice retention as “El Cheapo”. I love the fact that the hinges don’t break. I don’t like the overweight of the “High-end” coolers. I think it’s a great real world review! Great vid.

I have to disagree with the idea that these roto mold coolers wok only as well as $40 Blue igloo cooler. There are plenty of independent test right here on youtube that disprove that. I will absolutely agree that unless you are ridiculously dependent on your cooler I dont understand spending $400 on a cooler. It is nice to have a cooler that will last more than just a couple days and there are plenty that will do the job at a lower price than Yeti. Competition will do its job eventually.
Good example, though it wouldn't be as hot on dirt or near water wich is general where most people camp as compared to concrete in a backyard with no air circulation. And you could leave it under a tree your car trunk or under your truck tailgate wich is what I prefer
Yes I know this. This was an extream test. Even in ideal shade / water you still may have only got 5-12 more hours out of the ice.

Nice real world review! I just used my rtic 45 for a weekend getaway. I took it out of a 100+ degree camper, filled it with room temp beer and 20 lbs of ice. Hot cooler/beer melted of about half the ice within 24 hours, topped it off with ice again and then it does its "magic." I can't really knock it for that, still out performs you run of the mill cheap cooler. Good review!

Great review. Tired of seeing cooler tests done where it is 70-80 degrees out and they park the coolers in the shade. In those conditions they might as well set the bag of ice outside also, it would probably last a day!
I live in the desert where its 100+ in the day and the only shade you can find is under a rock Your video is much closer to realistic for me. I have a cheap igloo I will throw sandwich meat, cheese, drinks, and of course a 20lb bag of ice. Everything is ok at lunch, but that infamous afternoon heat takes its toll, and by supper most of the ice is gone, and the sandwich meat is questionably warm.
I know they don't insulate the lids on the cheapos (wtf?) and that is probably the source of my grief. Are the high end coolers really that much better?
Dude I feel your pain! I think you'd be surprised at how well the more expensive ones work. In my opinion all the Roto molded coolers are vey similar but on a macro scale, much better than your average Coleman. Yeti is overpriced but orca, and yeti, and pelican make pretty affordable coolers that work very well. I see cabelas makes a petty badass cooler as well. They all have insulated lids, with freezer seals.

Yea I would probably agree. In some cases, sometimes all you have is a "beer cooler". So for the average person yes, most definitely yes that's way to much beer haha
How can a beer, sitting in ice and water (day 2) read 42*?
I had a job where subordinates had to calibrate thermometers. The calibration of thermometers is done with ice and water. Those beers should have read 32* - 33*. I don’t buy the test you did. Something seems fishy. More than once your reader hits the ice and doesn’t read out at 32* or 33*. Impossible.
I think your thermometer needs some calibration.
Just an observation.
That said, it didn’t change the fact that it took three days for all the ice to melt. So that tells a lot in itself.
Yea buddy commented a while back that the distance between objects should be 12 inches. I was all over the place hahah it's a higher end mechanic thermo gun so it's gotta be good. And the stickers mixed with the roundness off the glass fuck with the laser as well. Keep in mind, the thermo gun is mostly just for reference.
I bought an RTIC 145. The rubber feet fall out easily. I lost one and called them, and they told me to buy new ones. They said 'The feet are designed to fall out to stop it damaging the surface on which you are dragging it'. Bullshit. Keeps things cold...glue the feet in... don't expect any support from the company.
Yea my lid warped on my 65 and they said just email a picture of it and they'll send a new one. Yea they should replace the feet on em, that's bullshit

Good Review I bought the rtic 20 Cause 1 it is cheaper than the yeti , 2 it really holds 20 Qts inside, 3 I needed a smaller cooler to fit in between the seats of the work van, I must say I was a little sad when I first used the cooler cause the ice only like your test lasted about 3 days, but I like you in this test did not pre chill the cooler, usually you have too much stuff to do, through the cooler in the truck and hit circle K on the way to work and fill it up with ice and drinks, I must say though your drinks will stay cool one more day if you leave the cold water in the cooler, still these coolers are better than the cheep 20 dollar coolers , I guess if you had the time or if you knew you were going to need the cooler for a week camping or more you could pre chill it, some of there you tube test are not real world cause I don't know anyone who pre chills their cooler. anyway I like the cooler and plan to get another one I just cant decide whether to get the 45 or the 65.
I think I've only ever pre chilled muy cooler once for a week long camping trip. Ain't nobody got time to take 24 hours and pre chill their cooler. Thanks for the comment man! Have a good day!

Phil Hickenbottom I would have to agree, your average Coleman cooler wouldn't be able to last as long as it's covered in this test. For less than $200 depending on size yes this cooler is 100% worth it

Rush Voorhis Outdoors nope, keeping the water will keep things colder longer, but keeping the water from the ice keeps the ice longer. Two different things.

I have rtic 45 it's way better my ice lasting longer compared to my buddies yeti 45... we work out oilfields and my rtic last longer and retains ice weel and I got say for half price ... the rtic is way to go over yeti lol....

DONT BUY FROM RTIC! Mine came damaged and looked used along with divider. After spending $250 I expected more from them and then they just wanted to give me 10% which wouldn’t even cover the tariff charge they pass on to the customer!

OK, kids. Remember that day you were sitting in your H.S. Physics class wondering " When am I ever gonna use this crap?" This is when. If you want to make meaningful UA-cam videos that are based on the principles of Thermal Dynamics you must first understand the principles of Thermal Dynamics. This misguided, though well-intentioned, young man just filled a cooler with many items that are much warmer ( read, have more thermal energy) than the ice that they were placed in. This gives very little data on the insulating ability of the cooler. Since he didn't take into account the thermal transfer properties of those items or their masses and he didn't weigh the ice, he can't really tell how well this cooler works at keeping stuff cold. If he understood his Physics he would know that if he put the right number of beers at the right temperature into the right quantity of ice, he could come back in an hour to find all his free hotel ice melted and would conclude, " This cooler sucks!!" The moral of this story is, " Be nice to the class Nerd ". Maybe he will teach you how to have a proper cold beer the next time you go camping. Hell, invite him along, you might learn some of the other things you just blew off in H.S.
John mony this video perfectly demonstrates how awesome these coolers are! Good thing 100% of people who take a cooler camping don't put thought into the thermal dynamics of their cooler. Obviously if you put hot things into a cooler it's not going to stay cold for very long. The premise of this test and this video is for someone going camping or using a cooler for one day or less. I've been watching allot of videos on these types of coolers. They don't seem much better than any other ice chest.
Depending on what you're using it for , they are all very similar yea, but the roto-molded coolers are definitely better in some cases
