7mm-08 does anything the old 7x57 Mauser ever did. And that old 7x57 was an absolute gem. When used in a modern rifle with modern handloads the 7x57 could really walk the dog. The 7mm-08 has been walking the dog in factory form since Remington put it out the door.

Yes one of Remingtons success much like .223 they screwed up on the 260 all they had to do is get the ammo out first then the cartridge Winchester always had ammo first then the gun .270/.308 .243 06 300 w m Remington the 7 mm mag 7x08 and the 223

Those Norma Whitetails in my experience are like a core lokt 2.0. I’ve probably shot my best groups with the whitetails, in a couple different rifles. One a Ruger American compact 6.5 creedmoor, the other an older CZ 243. I have some 308 still to test and anticipate similar results. Not my preferred hunting ammo though. I’d rather shoot something with 1.5” groups with a preferred bullet for hunting, like the TTSXs, TSX, or GMX. Sometimes a rifle really doesn’t like copper bullets though, like an AR I’ve tried. 2-4” groups with all weights of copper I tested. Same rifle shoots 70+ grain match bullets well below an inch.

7mm-08 is definitely one of the most underrated boolot calibers out there. When I was just getting going in the hunting game 50 ish years ago (yikes) it was considered by most manly men to be just a light recoiling LADIES gun, but times have changed, projectiles have improved immensely now it’s definitely a solid intermediate slinger.
I love it, and I definitely wouldn’t hesitate to hunt moose or elk with one.
    Another great video Adam
    Thanks

Don't you just love how those writers painted the 7mm-08 Remington into the corner! A lot of people still to this day say it's a good choice for women and children! I say.. it's probably the best deer cartridge to come down the pipe in my lifetime :)
Also find it strange that those same writers don't say the same thing about the 243 Winchester and the 6.5 Creedmoor.

I would not call any of them "garbage" as they all were within minute of man melon and well within a deer's chest/shoulder area.
That said, one wants the least variance to increase the fudge factor, so your 2 bests should be your first choice.
    Another fun video.👍👍

i’ve been loving the 7mm-08 ever since i bought a 7mm08 AR-10 barrel from Wilson Combat recently. I almost hesitate to say this heresy but oh well, I find myself liking shooting the 7mm08 better than my 308. This barrel is also more accurate than my 308. Awesome content as usual!

7-08 is a great cartridge. Wasn’t available when I bought my 7x57 in 73’. I did a massive amount of hand loading and bench work late 73’ and much of 74’. Tried lots of bullets and powders from W780, I4350, to Norma 205 and bullets from 120 to 175g. I shot five round groups and if you graphed out the group sizes it would look like an hour glass. Big groups at 120 and 175 and small groups at 140-150 gr. Best powder was IMR 4350 along with Speer 145 gr BTSP bullets. Shot 1.75” @ 300 yards in stiff wind. Disclaimer time the rifle ( Ruger 77 7x57) had been modded like present day swat rifles as I shot a heavy 6mm Shilen barrel a lot) Lee Six Beavertail glass stock and CanJar Set trigger with 4x12 scope. When I put the skinny 7x57 barrel on it looked like there was 3/8” space from barrel to stock 😂. In 92’ I picked up a Rem 700 7x57 mountain rifle , seated my custom reloads back to factory specs paced off 100 yards and shot five shot group off the hood of my car < 1”. Never messed with that rifle except put it in a Lee Six Glass stock and put the 4x12 scope on it. The 6mm/244 rem had a 6x18 and not a stalking rifle. If the 7-08 had been on a rack in 73’ I’d be shooting that. One shot one kill only thing that didn’t stop in it tracks has a big hog and it ran in three tight circles and fell over dead. Shot that with factory Normal 150’s as I didn’t have anything loaded for the hunt. It was a last minute deal and the 150’s was all the store had this was back in 82’. Those Norma rounds were almost as accurate as my hand loads and printed on paper where my loads did. Nice video. Thanks for sharing

Been using that cal. For years. Got a first year Model 7 rem with an 18in barrel. When that round hits it comes out 3 inches wide. Devastating round on deer. I stopped using a ballistic tip as it did too much damage if you hit the shoulder blade. But through the ribs, perfect. I went to the SP bullet and stayed there with the 140gn.

Great video! I have a 243 in the Ruger compact, noticed the jump when you fired each round and mine used to do the same I filled the fore stock and the butt with a little lead and 2 part epoxy made it a little heavier and stiffened the twist out of it a whole lot more stability the rifle shoots really nice now. I also have a Tikka T3X 7mm-08 load my own 139Gr SST they group under an inch 9 inch twist Thanks for the video

All those groups would be suitable for deer, as they all fit well into the 'kill zone' of a deer. More than likely the lightest bullets will give the least felt recoil if that is a consideration. i suspect all those rounds are suitable for deer in terminal performance.
Were I a bit younger and didn't already have a (several, actually) hunting rifle, I would likely choose the 7mm-08. It is the 'spiritual' child of the 7x57mm Mauser, but uses a shorter action and is suitable for higher pressure loads.
Of note, the 7x57mm Mauser in original form used a bullet between 170 and 175 grains. That seems currently in the 7mm-08 to be a hand loaded proposition, but worked well at lower velocities.
On that note, I am not sure the twist rate of the barrel is fast enough to stabilize the heavier bullet. Gotta go fast, you know.
One must also note that every rifle (barrel and bedding) is fairly unique and one man's test is not a universal truth. On the other hand, it is a place to start.

If you haven't tried them yet, Hornady makes a 120gr lite recoil and shoots soft out of a Savage Axis, the 139gr GMX rounds on the other hand kicks like a mule out of the same gun. Just getting back into the sport so still working on consistent groupings though. 😂

Hey. WTW. Love your channel. Had a Remington model 7 short action lightweight rifle in 7mm-08. It shot well, was light, and short. I never got a chance to take any game with it before I sold it. I think it's a very capable cartridge. I know Remington also had the 260 Remington which was just the 6.5 in the same case as the 7 mm 08. I tried a Ruger ultralight rifle in that caliber but it didn't enthuse me any. I went back to using my 308 mohawk 600 Remington and have never looked back. I like the 7.62x39 for deer too. I've taken 3 deer with Russian 123 gr. wolf hollow points. It's a very capable round. I've use sks and ak-47 rifles to hunt with in that caliber. Thanks for the video.

There are so many variables and some rifles just do not like certain loads. Its a case of finding the one that it does like. But the 7mm bullet BC is so good, it would be hard to find a load that didn't work well. And of course as you work through the different loads, unless you let the barrel cool down to cold each time, you will get variability.

I think Hornady dropped the ball on those loadings. Also, I know the Federals did really good on the last video!🇺🇲✝️🇺🇲

Matches my experience as well. Nothing shoots as well as CoreLoks and Norma through my rifles in just about any caliber. When ammo first started becoming a little more available after covid, Norma Shooting was one of the firsts to start getting fairly reasonable priced ammo out there from the Georgia plant. I snatched up a bunch on 308 whitetail for $18 and 6.5x55 partitions for $21 and free shipping. I later found out the partitions were a close out, and now I kick myself all the time for not having broke the piggy bank and bought more. That stuff shoots lights out into clover leafs. Now their prices came way up, so not sure if they were trying to snatch some market share at the time, but it was a great deal on great ammo.

I was just at the range yesterday with my Tikka T3X model Hunter 7mm-08 .
Hornady American Whitetail 139 grain was grouping 2.75” . Unacceptable !
Going to try the Hornady Precision Hunter 150 grain ELDX .
But I think I’m going to try some of the Norma 150’s as well . I just didn’t care much for the relatively low BC and low energies out beyond 200 yards on those flat nosed projectiles but if they’re grouping under an inch it’s all good . I know there are better options but for the cost 💲 I think the Norma is a good choice

Well I have owned five rifles in 7mm-08 and a model 700 shot the best. Used hornady 120gr. HP. They put lights out on whitetail deer. Always come back to 08 for a good reason it just works. Light bullets at 3000fps is Awesome.

Whatever happened to the 7 mm Mauser? It set the standard for the .28 caliber. There are those that will stick with the 175s, but the prevailing winds, indicate 140s, or so.
It is all you'll need, for practically everything on the planet, using the proper bullet. Speed is for those that think they need it.
    Proper rifle, proper bullet .

For some reason, I have never been able to pull good grouping performance out of the GMX or the Fusions in any of the guns I have shot them in, so seeing that your gun didn't like them either just helps confirm my struggles with those loadings as well
