When I was a very young man, I had considerable interest in being part of the merchant marine industry. Eventually ended up in aviation. Worked as a bush pilot, charter pilot, corporate jet pilot and 27 years as a pilot for a major airline. Terrific jobs and life style but after watching your series Joe, I still think I missed something. Grateful for your series, makes this old man happy.
As I sit on my beach and watch the ships enter and depart the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles I have a new appreciation for those ships and the crews they carry. Thanks for taking us along.. The quality of the videos you are putting together for us is outstanding. Thank you..........
The aggregate you hauled to Ascension Island was probably glacial in origin and you are correct, it is much stronger than volcanic rock. I worked in the Marshal Islands years ago when Hawaiian Dredging was building a pier on Majuro. All the aggregate was barged in because coral makes terrible concrete.
I think you should continue to show the ups and downs for a couple of reasons. I watch these videos as kind of an experience outside of my normal life. I want to see it all lol. Secondly for young people thinking about this job, they should see the good and the bad.
I rode the dirt boats for many long years. Bulk/Break bulk is the best. Coolest crews, best ports, and all that good stuff. You're doing it right Joe. Going to sea for a living is the best job I ever had.
All compliments well deserved Joe. I always look forward to one of your episodes. I don’t remember the sub count when I signed up, but 76,400 subs. You’re rockin it Joe. You’ll have your silver play button in no time.
Loved the series Joe, I’m nothing to do with the shipping industry but I find your insight into that world amazing and super entertaining! Thanks from Scotland 🏴
Yeah I'm ex-U.S. Navy and later worked for MSC. I get a lot out of your videos. It's nice to see this side of your industry from your point of view. You have an ability to share your experiences that I really enjoy. Thanks Joe!
I know you're working hard on that ship, and I know making a video blog series like this is time-consuming, but I think you're getting to a point the channel will really start paying off. I'd just love to see and series from this ship, even if you have to structure the series differently. Maybe you could just leave a talking blog in this format every week or so, then edit the shipping videos when you get home. That way we could try to keep up with what you are doing, and look forward to seeing the videos when you get back. These are just a few ideas, but your channel seems like it's ready to take off and fly, even though you are on the water, and I love this channel and would love see it succeed in a way that will pay off and still be done in your own artistic fashion. Making videos on the ship and adding the voice over with your story telling abilities, just pulls everyone in. Your style also lends itself well to edition and releasing the videos later on, when you are off the ship, and if you can release the talking videos regularly, we will stay engaged until the edited videos come out, and have something to look at to.
Joe. Very much enjoyed your whole series of videos. It’s an industry I know nothing about so it’s been educational as well as entertaining. As a UK aviation person I can tell you the the UK/US strategic military runway on Ascension is and has been rebuilt and needed a good deal of hard dense angular rock to act as a foundation to the main bitumen surface layers. Whence a ship load of Nova Scotia rock is needed. Looking forward to your next voyage. Best of luck. Mal
I'm not a sailor and never have been but have always been fascinated by the sea. I thought about joining the Navy out of HS but Mom said "hell no". If I had to do it all over again I would definitely give this lifestyle a try. Unfortunately I am now too old to consider this as an option but I do love seeing the things that could have been. Thanks from an old retired dude who can only now regret not taking the chance to experience what you have. Love the videos!
I'm an old trucker that would LOVE to do what you're doing if it wasn't for my crippling sea sickness lol Thanks again for the effort you put into sharing your experiences. You rule Joe
We live full time on a 52 foot trawler-style boat, and really love these glimpses into your life. We pass big ships all the time so it's really great to know a bit more about what's going on inside. We were in Port Hawksbury in August 2022; much nicer weather than when you were there!
Joe, I really enjoy your videos. First, because they are very entertaining. But also, because my father was a Merchant Marine. He served during WWII, and supplied Gen Patton in North Africa. He had lots of stories, very similar to yours. Now I have a visual to go along with his stories. Thanks so much!
Joe, my wife and I have absolutely loved your series. So honest and well done. You’re always so happy and I love that you love your job. Just wanted to thank you for all the effort to edit and put this all together. Happy sailing!
You motivated me to chase my dream of working on a vessel. Got in touch with the merchants mariners union today and starting the application process. Hope to catch you around and shake your hand some day man. Stay safe!
Hey Joe. Loved the vlogs. I work as a buyer for a merchant shipping company. Only been in it a year but I learned a lot from your vids on what the stuff I’ve been buying gets used for. I’m familiar with a lot of the terminology, ie bunkering, stores, stevedores, jib cranes, etc. But to see how things work onboard has helped me to understand the ins and outs of your life as a seaman. I usually only have contact with the vessel master and the C/E, but it was great to see the working relationships between all of the crew at all levels. I’m more than happy to stay on terra-firma. I don’t have sea legs. Although I am still waiting for the opportunity to go onboard one of my vessels - just unfortunate that they don’t come to the UK very often. Keep posting the vids bud. Every day is a school day. Regards. L McC
Thanks so much for educating us on a lifestyle most of us can only imagine or dream about.I work in merchant shipping but from the office side of things. Still love the job but enjoyed seeing things from the sailors POV. Cheers !
Just found your channel on UA-cam, just watched this entire series! Amazing! This is incredibly cool stuff. You are like the Big Lebowski of the sea. Love your style. Can't wait to watch everything else and the new things coming. Will be checking out the RV channel as well. Thanks so much for doing this. I just bought a shirt from the store.
Thanks nJoe. Your videos have helped me through hours of insomnia. I live about an hour south of the St. Lawrence Seaway and I realize that the short trips are a bummer, but htere are ships that reularly runn from Quebec to Minnesota. A trip through the 10 locks of the Welland Canal would be interesting but I imagine that it would get old fast if you were on a ship. Thanks again and I look forward to your next series.
Hey Joe. Hope all is well out there on the deep blue sea. I hear you say in some of the videos that you need a beer so I wasn't sure if alcohol is allowed on board or not? OK thanks Be safe out there
Hi Joe, I’m late to catch up on this video. Just wanted to drop a comment and say how much I enjoyed this series. The Q&A is a great addition. I think you have a great format that is refreshing to see on UA-cam. Look forward to more.
Fun anecdote I heard from a guy I went to college with. He sailed with an angolan bloke who did all his seatime as cadet at anchor outside Lagos in Nigeria, because some pencil pisher had typed one too many zeros on the concrete order for a major civil engineering project that was supposed to extend the whole waterfront of lagos. So... essentially the bay was full of bulk carriers carrying cement, and nigeria is humid... so... he spent 12 months at anchor as people were trying to jackhammer the massive blocks of concrete that had set in each hold 😅😂
YES, more commentary from you, your thoughts and impressions of a new place are the best part of the video. it's nice to see a new city, but I'm not there, how the people are, how generous they are with their warmth, and inclusion, painting a Church on Easter joy, it was a good story, as my name suggests, I like a good story, stories of like are as old as Fire. the fire we sat around to fight back the dark,
Starting watching you a few days ago, it was the one on food on these ships. But you do a nice vlog and I've learned a lot. Not sure I'm your oldest viewer but bet you did not think a sweet little old lady of 65 would be a fan. Like you style.
I work at a condo on a ship channel and I became so fascinated with the ships I see everyday. I'm so glad I found your channel so I can learn more about what goes on inside the ships. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
Hey Joe Thx for your videos, enjoy them very much. I was never a Merchant Mariner but was in the Navy back in the 80’s. Watching your videos somehow takes me back to those days and I can relate to a lot of what you do out at sea. Keep up the good work with your videos and stay safe
I read online somewhere that the British were doing extensive repairs to the air base runways on Ascension Island at the time you were there so perhaps that was what your stone shipment was used for.
Hey joe kind of a cool thing happened I saw your old ship the SLNC SEVERN here in Houston just a cool coincidence i thought since there are thousands of ships traveling around the world
Really glad to hear there's more to come. My sailing days only amounted to one summer on the Great Lakes, but it left a permanent mark on me that you have refreshed. Many thanks!
I have enjoyed all your videos even from the training period. Shows what all you have went thru to get where you are. Keep it up Im sure everyone looks forward to the next video. Fail winds and following seas sailor
New subscriber just found your channel today and watched a couple starting with grain from Houston to Africa. I worked in refineries and went aboard a ship at our docks which was interesting.
What a great series of videos you have out together. I enjoyed every single one of them. I am going to rewatch all of them with my family because I know they will enjoy them as much as I have. Please keep making them.
Joe, your channel is really awesome and I enjoy every moment of every video. I just got really behind and I'm trying to catch up, but that means that I don't have to wait for new videos.
Hey, thanks for the kind words and super thanks. I'm in the process of making that video, but in the mean time. Just pack for every season. lots of work clothes, one or 2 "going out" outfits. And something to entertain you in the off time. Laptop, with a hard-drive for movies and protein if you're a gym guy. etc. Hoped this helped.
Joe from sailor to another I love you content, and your right I was a different type of sailor than you, but I have rug pulled out from underneath me a few times, and it sucks. Keep up the great job!!!
New subscriber here! Started watching your channel with this series! I work and live minute from aulds cove Nova Scotia, really cool to see you’re journey! I definitely in the 16 part series vs all in one video, you get more in-depth, I’ve worked on tug boats and crab fishing, so its cool to see your way of life onboard a ship, keep up the great work, can’t wait to see the next adventure!
Great vlog recap. The stone is used for building materials like road base and concrete. It's good to show the ups and downs of the industry. Is a sailor really a sailor if they aren't complaining, haha. Looking forward to future vlogs. Keep it up. Maybe collab a bit with your coworkers, see about their jobs on board the vessels. IE: engine room content please 😁
Hi Joe. There are a number of guys now on various ships putting out UA-cam content. I have attempted to watch quite a few of them. How many do I subscribe to. Three. And one of them is your channel. Keep doing what you do. It works for me. Interesting and enjoyable. Can't ask for more.
Great job! So interesting! Thank you for the explanations and letting us travel along! I appreciate all your hard work making the videos available to us ! Love the way you tell a story, and background on the places you visit. Looking forward to the next adventure!
was the ascension island trip to st helena? they have an airport that was built no so long ago, took them several years before they could land a plane at the airport due to the high winds, i seen a sailing video that went to st helana, they anchored out and took the tender in to a wall where there were rope hanging on a steel pole structure, you had to hurry and grab a rope before the next wave crashed and knocked you over, was pretty comical to watch, they also took the trip up jacobs ladder, i think the largest stair case in the world, not positive, just seems like thats what i heard. thanks for taking the time to show us life on a cargo ship and the travels that come with it.
painting the church was a great way to give back

Same here...35 years in aviation , all the way up to 747 and still looking at the missed boat..🤔...keep it up Joe , great job...well done 👍
Do you think that I, at 25 with no responsibilities keeping me from it, should do it for a few years? I want to, but I'm just not sure.
Hello sir, what do you think of being a pilot? Will automation take over?
Man you didn't miss anything I'm on an SIU bulk carrier and my life is a living hell. Im so depressed and miserable! My life is ruined!
@@nickdoyle720buddy. Do it. 👍

My great grandfather was a merchant marine captain. Foreign. Your videos are great.
Fantastic voyages! Loved every one of them, and I never had to leave home.!

Joe you are just awesome!! Keep on keeepin' on!!
Thanks, Joe. An epic voyage. Looking forward to future videos. Great content!

Thank you so much for sharing your travels and views with us 👍

Enjoyed it so much watched it twice just to see what I missed
The rock in nova Scotia is pretty hard I always wonder where it goes to
Love your videos, Joe!
In Canada we call the aggregate “gravel” not stone. The most common gravel is sized 3/4 inch mostly used for roadways. Does that help?
Hey Joe
Thx for your videos, enjoy them very much. I was never a Merchant Mariner but was in the Navy back in the 80’s. Watching your videos somehow takes me back to those days and I can relate to a lot of what you do out at sea. Keep up the good work with your videos and stay safe

Hiya Joe I do love your great choice of music in your videos, keep it up mate

Awesome content, Joe! I'm getting my endorsements to become an AB. Can you do a gear rundown of everything you bring when signing onto a ship?
Hey, thanks for the kind words and super thanks. I'm in the process of making that video, but in the mean time. Just pack for every season. lots of work clothes, one or 2 "going out" outfits. was the ascension island trip to st helena? they have an airport that was built no so long ago, took them several years before they could land a plane at the airport due to the high winds, i seen a sailing video that went to st helana, they anchored out and took the tender in to a wall where there were rope hanging on a steel pole structure, you had to hurry and grab a rope before the next wave crashed and knocked you over, was pretty comical to watch, they also took the trip up jacobs ladder, i think the largest stair case in the world, not positive, just seems like thats what i heard. thanks for taking the time to show us life on a cargo ship and the travels that come with it.
