As the owner of a steel building I can tell you that spray foam has a fantastic use not mentioned in this video, sound dampening! I had the ceiling of my shop sprayed and it cut the sound from rain to almost nothing.
Good point Joe! You are right, spray foam can greatly reduce sound transmission.
Thanks captain obvious.
Thanks. I was curious whether the ceiling could be spray foamed.
@@jimmarchman yes of course
Would that help water proof the roof
The applicator is knowledgeable in the application of this product, the surface finish and the condition of the whip hose tell me that. I have been spray foaming closed cell foam in northern Alberta Canada for just under 7 years and it is nice to see a well done job.
Thank you!
That was a good video. Good spray guy. Nice technique with the gun and checking with the depth gauge. I would definitely want to have this done when I build a pole barn
Great service! Great price. 5 Star service. Very knowledgeable and quick to respond. If you are looking to have work done, look no further than Huston Bros. Thanks guys!!!
I am a big believer in closed cell spray foam for many applications. From my experience, the downside to applying spray foam directly to the backside of the exterior metal panel is the struggle this will cause if you ever need to replace that panel due to damage caused by storms, bikes or cars, or someone with an attitude kicking the siding. The struggle to replace the panel is even worse if the inside of the building has been finished off with metal liner panel or plywood because you can't get to the backside of that panel you are replacing to cut the spray foam at a joint to allow for its removal. During construction of your building, if you do plan to use spray foam, consider placing a house wrap before applying the metal. The foam will adhere to the wrap, not to the metal, allowing panels to someday be replaced if damaged.
This will cause condensation
Houston Bros are great guys with a great product. They sprayed my attic space after I took out all of the batting and blown insulation that was making us sick. We were out of the house for only two days after with a slight "vanilla" odor that was completely gone the following day. Our heating/cooling costs reduced 30-40%, air quality inside the home is fantastic, less dust and the outside noise was greatly reduced. Call Tom and his two (working) brothers. They will be doing my new metal garage as soon as it's up in the next few weeks.
Thank you Wes, we appreciate the business!
Looks GREAT and I bet it does an amazing job of sealing/sound proofing/ and insulating for heat and A/C !! I'm looking into putting up one of these building in the near future, glad I watched this vid !! Pay NO ATTENTION to the key board, do nothing, self proclaimed experts on here .... lol.
Thank you.
When you pay to have spray foam installed this is the quality you want! Great vid!
WOW DAMN, VERY IMPRESSIVE....
AND WHEN (DRIED/HARDENED)
IT LOOKED LIKE A (CEMENT) WALL,
READY FOR SOME PAINT 🎨 ......

You guys do really nice work, good to see
Great info, thanks I am planning a building and needed this info.
Great to hear! If you need more information please check out our website: www.HoustonBrosFoam.com
So satisfying to watch. Wish it covered the whole process. Great videos!

I did 1 1/2 rockwool between purlin horizontal and used 3m Spray adhesive to hold in place.with 6 inch of Rockwool between wall framing, vapor barrier and log siding, on inside.
Underside of roof pan, had 6 inches of closed cell and cedar T&G cieling.
great job nice and clean
Great video, Tom!
Thank you!
great foam applications
i use to spray foam it is the best nice job boys
I did it...made a flimsy metal building into an actual solid building. Good stuff
Awesome! Closed cell foam is a structural foam and can add a lot of racking strength to walls.
Check out the sprayer's attention to detail.
good video and good information.
I had a company come in and spray he flushed out the 2x6 on the walls and gable. I did under the roof with batts.
Awesome job
Love it
Thank you!
i was in dmz korea in the mid 90s and most our bldgs were 50s quanset huts. they had been sprayed 'on the outside' with foam, very thick. worked great in winter. also in summer.
Why spray on the outside the building why not inside
And I thought you were out of Houston Texas 🤦🏻♂️ good video guys 💯
We get that a lot! I have had to turn away many Texans.
@@HoustonBrosSprayFoamFerrum Bummer... Was just about to check your site.
Wow great job!!!!
Thanks!
Looks great.
That had to make a huge difference.
I have a building that needs to be done right now. I live in Greenville S.C., let me know when you can swing by for my free estimate! Haha, just kiddin. Great video. Had a few buddies recommend this and now I’ve made my mind up. Godbless
Spray foam really does work pretty good. The problem is the cost . For the same or a little less price I can bubble wrap my garage and insulate it with faced fiberglass. It’s unbelievable wha some of these guys charges here in southern Ohio. I’ve had the floor of a small house insulated awhile back. It was 28x40. Estimateswas $1500 to $1800 . I had half that in the fiberglass
I researched this a lot and just had a 26 x 42 metal horse barn sprayed . We are going to be using it as a home . The foam worked great and made the metal structure solid as brick ..
Benny Bryant, I’m looking at doing this to a building roughly the same size. How much did it run you to have this done?
Made it quieter too didn't it?
I have been wondering if this has been done successfully.
Benny Bryant: Hardy as strong as a brick. Maybe stopped the ‘oil canning’ effect but not much strength added. I’m not an engineer, but my neighbor has a brother in law that knows a guy that grew up with a friend that went to school to eventually become one.
Benny Bryant any issues with off gas being put off? I am looking at buying a metal arch building but struggling to settle on a insulation for the metal building.
Nice job
Wish you were closer to the Abilene area. I am looking to have my building done exactly like that.
Nice job, looks like you know what you are doing.
Houston Bros could you put a video up of some previous metal building that have been foamed 10 years or more ago to show that there is nothing wrong with the building? Would be nice to see how the building is holding up thanks.
This would be an interesting endeavor as we have been spraying foam for over a decade and I would like to go back and see how some of our older projects have stood up to the test of time. Usually foam turns darker in color but that's about it. It's pretty permanent and really should not change much at all over the life of the building. I have rarely had a client contact us with any issues after installation. You can see many more of our metal building projects here www.houstonbrosfoam.com/metal-buildings
@@HoustonBrosSprayFoamFerrum Mostly im curious about rust on unpainted steel.
Wow, nice job..
Thank you!
Nice video.
Real nice. Makes it tough against wind damage too. But if some siding gets damaged by oops tractor impact and i want to repair 7 sheets...
Simple .... no dwi :D
You should house wrap the building and spray the foam on that. Then it's no big deal.
Good job
I'm actually putting up a 18 x 22 metal garage up at my Basecamp in northern Wisconsin
Wish y’all were around Weatherford
I am trying to find someone to do this to my 30x80x14 pole barn shop here in Indiana. Wish u was closer.
i put some in the corners of my chicken house to seal the metal ribs behind the corner posts to keep snakes out ,,,, long story short chickens love it and ate it all ...chickens never got sick,, just saying dont use it around chickes.....have a great day!
Hey Tom, i'd call you to get a quote but I'm in Australia so that wouldn't quite work. Question ; can you put this same product on the roof as well as the walls? EDIT : never mind just looked at your website for metal buildings, first picture that came up. Keep up the good work mate.
More expencive than we would have ever thought ! The guy is suposebably the cgeapest in our area and ihis estiment was 8 grand. The whole building with the cement was only 3 times that , And that was with a cemented lean to. We cant afford that as much as i like the stuff.
I have put spray foam on a number of houses. Curious how you could wall board this job if you wanted since the metal studs are now covered?
I have a steel frame house( steel walls & studs), the stucco was applied directly over exterior steel walls ( no lath, plywood or anything else). Could this be sprayed on the outside after removing old stucco? Then install stucco or different siding properly?
What is the average price per square foot for close cell foam? Great video
Hell yeah 👍
yes senior ~ that is a lot of work , not for a loafer
Thank you for your very informative video and your detailed descriptions of it's performance with references. I'd be pleased to have you give me an estimate if you lived closer. Be well & take care. Bob in Yakima Washington. :)
Thanks for checking us out Bob!
Great!
Will the spray foam delaminate from the steel? The metal has a large thermal expansion coefficient.
Why is all the foam around me yellow? This Looks great! Wanna load up and come up to montana?
Additionally, it completely seals the interior envelope.
You made you points and did a nice job. Could you have smoothed the surface? Have you looked at using the foam for raising foundations? Good Luck, Rick
The foam can only get so smooth, it's just the nature of the product. We do actually do the concrete lifting as well. ua-cam.com/video/LsZfbBrj83o/v-deo.html
Very impressive! Did you do the ceiling also?
Yes we insulated the entire envelope. You can see more of our metal building projects here www.houstonbrosfoam.com/metal-buildings
After the foam is applied is it common to leave the walls like that? Or do most people put drywall or plywood or anything over the top of it?
Great job! Do you do attics ?
It makes your house stronger too.
Closed cell foam can add as much a 400% racking strength to your walls! It's FEMA approved to stand up to high winds.
He makes the application look simple, but believe me it is not!! 2lb foam is perfect!!!!
metal buildings expand and contract with outside temperatures. how is that possible once foamed ?
Do you spray the center part of the roof where the 2 sheets meet my contractor had left a small opening there. With a seperate cap I'm assuming it was for ventilation. My spray foam guy covered that up it seems to trap all the heat inside now should I open it back up?
Not only that! It seals, the metal from SWEATING ON THE INSIDE TOO!
426 SUPER BEE Mopar or no car. PERIOD
I AGREE ~ GOT TO LOVE A HEMI
is there a chemical reaction over time where the foam is on the metal siding?
@@timmernator1 I had that problem with Great stuff spay foam, but idk about this, its much different, but it does not seem to soften the painted metal it was applied to, and no sign of any issued at this point. 2.5 years installed now
look good and expensive too
If you care about a really efficient building its worth it, if you are running an oul change business and heat with waste oil, then prob not worth it
Is this better than the regular insulation you always see?
That foam looked esp tough
It strengthens the building and helps it to resist wind damage.
You can buy the 10 gallon spray canisters with the built-in and gun from Home Depot. Save yourself $16,000. You could probably do this whole building yourself for 1500 bucks, 2000.
would this work if the metal shed was for welding purposes ? does this foam burn much ?
Hi! How much do you charge for a 2000SF steel building insulation?
Due to the complex nature of any spray foam project an on-site estimate would be required in order to evaluate the cost of installation.
Hey Tom nice work brother! I like the foam you are using. What brand is it?
Thank you. We have used many different brands over the years and I cannot recall which brand this project used. Most closed cell foams are pretty similar in performance so the brand really isn't that important.
How long does off gassing take? I've heard of some horror stories where in some cases it never stops off gassing, making people very sick!
Very interested. Assuming a identical brand new empty building and I do all the masking and floor covering. What is roughly the price per square foot to spray the walls with 3" and roof with 5" of closed cell foam? Thanks
We would like to build a house next year and go with a cathedral ceiling (beams, t&g boards, then insulate the top). However, I just had a local contractor telling me he wants 7.5 CAD/sqaure foot for 5" insulation. Now that sound ridiculously expensive to me or is that normal?
Texas sun. Would you recommend 2 in on walls and 3 or 4 on the ceiling? Or would 2 inch be enough on the ceiling?
Beautiful close cell man come check out some of my work. I did 2 inches in a grow house a while back.
Awesome, do you every get down to Texas
Unfortunately no, we are a small family company based in Virginia. In order to go down to Texas it would have to be quite a project to be worth the trip.
It adds 20% rigidity to the structure! It is also the best PEST barrier. Rodents hate this stuff because when they try to bite it, it's so unnatural that they stay away.
Spray Jones says from test that 2" is best to stop enough heat transfer which will cause condensation and is all you need to insulate almost anywhere in the states. Did you find 1.5 enough?
Since this appears to be an all-steel building, "rot" will not be an issue. Maybe, if there is concern about rot regarding a wood or pole-barn structure, special considerations should be given as to the weather integrity of the building shell....as one would with most all residential construction. True, there are no "perfect" one-size-fits-all solution for all types of construction; but, I think the benefits of this type of insulation as applied to all-steel buildings outweigh the potential cons or at least has the equivalent risk of traditional methods.
For me, it comes down to cost. Upfront cost may seem high, until you figure what it will cost to keep a 35' x 75' warm enough to be used throughout the winters over the life of the building. The more use you get out of your building, the cheaper it is over time!
What kind of foam is that and about what did it cost to spray this building?
This is a plural component 2lb closed cell polyurethane foam. It's about r-7 per inch and is a moisture, vapor, and air barrier.
I don't recall what it cost to spray this project. Projects can range in price from $1,000 to $10,000. Pricing can vary depending on a lot of factors like:
>Total square footage
>Type of corrugation
>Type of foam sprayed
>Thickness of the foam sprayed
>How far away the client is
>Will a lift be required
>How much preparation (plastic and masking) is required
>How many doors and windows
>Will the foam need to be cleaned off of the studs
It's not an easy answer. This is why we do free estimates so we can give you a custom price for your project. I hope this helps!
@@HoustonBrosSprayFoamFerrum Duhh, that is an extremely easy question to answer, you got paid, what was the amount written on the check?
One you do closed cell should you have any condensation issues?
I am building Metal building in Northern Arizona. My insulation company bid one with open cell. Do I need to use a vapor barrier here? We rarely have humidity higher than 15% except in the monsoon season (4 months) when we can get in the 70% range at the most and not everyday. We get freezing temps and snow up here from Jan - March, as well. I hope that is enough info to get a good idea of the proper way to insulate up here. The wind is so bad here that it is almost impossible to put on the insulation from the metal garage companies. TIA
Nice video, I'm an architect in Michigan and I spec nothing but closed cell spray foam in all of my commercial projects. Lately, we have been told by metal building companies if spray foam is applied directly to the metal panels it will void the warranty of the panels. I'm not sure why, any ideas? Have you heard of this?
The thought or worry is that foam is applied in high humidity trapping water between the closed cell and steel eventually causing rust
difference with closed cell and open??? one for up north and the other for down south?????
What is a cost on a 24x50 x 8' tall legs walls and ceiling?
That looks like NCFI's anti microbial 2lb foam. Your spray operator is doing a great job. Very even. What do you think of the Graco air purge? I love my Glascraft Probler. I put a grease zerk on the bottom of it and it makes the side seals last a whole lot longer. Check out Polyurethane Machinery Corporation's AP-2 gun. Never used it but looks so sweet. They have an AP-EX that I don't I'll get because the last house I insulated will by the one I'm building for retirement. I have a Glascraft foamcat 200 and 400. 200 is air drive and the 400 is hydraulic drive. Love the Foamcat series. Anyway. Hope things go well for you and best of luck.
The fusion AP is a good sturdy gun. Handle isn’t shaped worth a damn though. I reformed mine. The parts are pretty durable assuming you can get a properly drilled mixing chamber from graco, I’ve had some issues in the past with that. I also have shot with the AP-1 a couple years, that was basic and had some issues that were resolved with added parts for the new AP-2 which I also have. The AP-2 shoots good most of the time, but I find that the parts are made from a softer steel and are less durable than the fusion. Mixing chambers are made of 4140 which is hi how carbon steel which will scratch with a drill bit easily if you aren’t extremely careful. I also don’t like that the chambers are 2 pieces because they never 100% perfectly align with one another which can through off the pattern or build up shit in the chamber. Also PMC doesn’t seem to know the drill bit size for their chambers. They send bits that are 1 size to small. I’ve also got miss-matched chamber and pct parts before when ordering new, the chamber will be drilled at a #50 and pct at a #51 occasionally so the pct is as good as garbage then. The easiest gun to service with the most reusable parts is the fusion. All the parts in the fusion are steel or oring. The AP-2 has nylon check valves with little springs and balls which become damaged, lost or no longer fit and need to be replaced. What I like most about the AP-2 is the speed the chamber moves when you pull the trigger and the weight of the gun. With that said, I mostly run the AP-2 on my rig, but when I get frustrated with the AP-2 I switch back to the Fusion as a backup. I have an adapter block to attach my AP-2 to my fusion manifold. There is a lot yet that can be improved with the AP-2 design, but I’m happy with it most days.
The AP-2 manifold block is also poorly designed for a gun that’s trying to be light weight. It’s a huge piece of steel that could have 50% or more of the material machined off to save on weight.
Christopher Gruenwald Is there such as a perfect PU gun? For sure I think there isn't. What we can do is try to find one we get the most use out of before re building or re sealing.
spf depot is where to get your replacement parts. they make stronger mixing chambers
that guy can spray ! i spray and i know wha it takes to put down foam that smooth
I had a spray foam company come out to quote 335 square feet at 2" of 2lb close cell foam under a roof. They wanted $7 per square foot, and *I* had to do all the prep. The guy couldn't tell me what the name of the product was, and they had a two month lead time. Over $2k for the roof of a small workshop!
Gotta wear resparator application- can the stuff break down over time n get airborn-i know its costly, w/those q's- as sharktank says "im out"
Not sure where you are, but I got 1350 sq ft done 1.5" thk for $2000
Do you have to vent a metal building once you do this? If so how?
Impressive! I certainly like what I see here. How long does it last? How well does it stand up to humidity and temperature extremes?
Michael Schroeder It will last the life of your house. It actually increases the structural integrity of your framing. Humidity and extreme temperatures are no match for closed cell foam as well. As it is a compete air and water tight seal.
Does it off gas much after it's cured? Will it off-gas in the heat of the summer when the sun is baking the building?
Ty's Videos It will completely stop off gassing between 24-48 hours. The typical cure time. After that period, it will never off gas again
have metal porch cover ,screws stick thru n leak, porch issohot, canmy metal co er b spray foamed with the leaks.
Mine sweats and it rains inside. How much does it cost to have an 16 x 16 ft building done?
Does anyone have information about insulation polyurethane foam after many years of service?
My dad built a house can you spray foam? The people that bought it we're allergic to the foam gases, they had to tear out all the inside drywall and dig out the phone and replace with fiberglass insulation. Cost almost as much as the house. There's other video showing where if it's not put on proper the right temperatures are the benoliel shin isn't right? The guy had to tear his whole roof off and replace it. That was many years ago? That stuff turns rock hard I've never seen that.
Just saw your video , great job. Question I have is I had a metal building for 8 yrs and I insulated the crap out of it ceiling to floor but every year when it was damp out it was so wet inside looked like someone soaked insulation , I had no vents at all and beleive that was the issue , I have since moved to new property and want to install same building but don't want the moisture will the spray foam take care of that or do I need ceiling or gable vents?
Thanks for info
I think you need a vapor barrier.
Closed cell spray foam insulation is a moisture barrier. As for needing vents, that depends on what you plan to use the space for. Since it is closed cell, air can't pass through, so highly volatile chemicals will build up in the space if not properly vented.
Would y'all come to central GA.?
Question is how much R value do you need? I live in NC and we some nights into the single digits. On these metal buildings if you get the insulation the seller offers you can only get 6 inches or R19. I am not sure that is enough in the roof, but unlike a pole barn you don't have the option to blow insulation in the attic. Seems like with this stuff you would have to put at least 2 1/2 to 3 inches to get the same r value.
It depends on what you mean by "need". There are code requirements for living spaces and commercial buildings. If your building isn't being lived in or subject to code then you can do whatever you like as far as thickness. R-value isn't as important as an air seal. Performance is vastly improved when you achieve an air seal. We have seen huge success with 1 1/2" -2" of closed cell foam. Clients report easily heating their spaces with with just 2" of closed cell in metal buildings.
I would love to have this done by I have already studded, insulated Batts, and plywooded my walls. I think this spray insulation would have been better, but back in the day 20 years ago, this was not around I don't think.
been around since the 80's. military since the 40's
Only problem with foam is replacing a damaged panel may be very difficult
