I was one of the students in this class when it was filmed. John Melton is one of HMI's finest instructors. The Theory of Mind taught me so much about myself and others. I present my own version of John's teachings in a video on my channel if anyone is interested. The video is only about 9 min and is a condensed version of this class.

Thanks for the video content! Sorry for chiming in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you considered - Ponabriel Stunning Preponderance (probably on Google)? It is a smashing one off product for getting a certification in Hypnosis or NLP without the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my close friend Aubrey at very last got amazing results with it.

Summary of this entire vid: Your brain can only process or FILTER a finite amount of material. Once it gets overwhelmed with messages, then this filter stops filtering properly and messages can then get through (leak) to your subconscious. Hypnosis works in the same manner - when this filter is overwhelmed by a hypnotist or hypnotic things, you can become hyper-suggestive, and easier to manipulate.

John Melton does a great job instructing. I was trained initially in the 70s by Bill and Carol Baras (the Baras Foundation & Hypnos-Morpheus) and Raphael Juliano. I later received training from HMI. They are very professional and have a great program put together.

When you listen to this video just realize that by reading this message your actually talking to yourself which gives you the ability to think of reasons or suspect what your reading is hypnotizing however simply put, now realize how you feel, and no matter how you feel you have the ability to change it to something even more positive, yes relax as if you were sleeping and just allow yourself to be as happy as you can allow yourself and even though you allowed yourself to be happy just imagine what that feeling would feel like if you were ten times happier

I had an experience where I completely blacked out after having a lot of drinks. My friends say they took me home and gave me my car keys, but an hour later I found myself on the highway, having driven over 30 minutes, perfectly, expect I was speeding. I no longer drink but I just wanted you all to know that the subconscious mind is extremely powerful.

I would like to point out one small error. In Mr. Melton's lecture he discussed at the 29 minute mark about the Small Coke ads that would pop-up on screen extremely quickly. This 1956 experiment was later proven false. The reason people purchased a greater amount of drinks was due to the confounding variable of weather (it was much hotter during the days of the experiment).
This makes us wonder about something known as the absolute threshold, which is the minimum stimulation necessary to detect a certain stimulus 50% of the time. In other words, subliminal messages can and can not work. Psychologists such as Greenwald and Pratkanis (and more) have concluded that there is not sufficient evidence to support the claim that subliminal messages have any significant effect on individuals.
Must have been an honest mistake :)

Nullvote. This is a conceptual theory and it is hard to cover every aspect of how it is involved without making this a 10 hour plus video. Personally, I have trouble with the overload aspect of triggering hypnosis--but I have not disbanded it either. I believe overload (stress) triggers fight/flight which triggers habit (or what has been conditioned the strongest). So yes the S/C is at play, but this does not necessarily mean hypnosis to me. A highly anxious state though can trigger hypnotic behavior--as in stage hypnosis. To me, hypnosis is more about creating a relaxed state of mind IOT circumvent conditioned responses to a behavior. Systematic Desensitization is one such example.

I don't know why but I have believed in hypnosis for as long as I can remember, about 60 years, and in the last 25 years I have made numerous efforts of various kinds to find a good hypnotherapist or....a hypnotist but without any success. This is an informative video, maybe there is still hope for finding one - if I can get John Melton's help!😊How do I do that?

Overloading is just one technique out of many. I like the video but not that he tried to suggest it was the definition. That's like saying going to work by bus is the only way to get to work. The other ways are more subtle, better organised, based on peace, not complete chaos to get a zombie type blackout where you have a small frame where a person can instill or be instilled something new.

***** Your right, now mr E realize that when you make yourself conscious of your sensory acuity whatever sensor is being activated by your conscious thoughts your really actually opening doors to the rest of your sensory acuity which allows seepage of information to enter the subconscious mind, simply put that is how you hypnotize anyone, if you choose to overload, or progressive relaxation, or shock induction your simply taking advantage of the doors that are open by creating confusion of the sensory acuity as your bringing conscious attention towards one sensor and entering through a sensor that is not being consciously activated, for all the somnambulists out there this may be overloading so apologies to you just re-read this and you will understand it better and longer than any E or P :)

    • @catherineshaw1122

In general, overload is how our minds go into hypnosis all day long. There are other ways but it's a crucial theory to comprehend. They also teach other methods at HMI.

I am a Certified medical-Support Clinical Hypnotherapist. I disagree with certain things in this presentation. The most important mistake is the way he defines the effect of the Sympathetic nervous system, also called the fight or flight response, on hypnosis. What actually happens is the sympathetic part of the autonomic nervous system is switched to the parasympathetic aspect of the autonomic nervous system, which allows deep relaxation which relaxes the critical faculty of the conscious mind and makes us more suggestible. I have studied a lot of different hypnotist and I’ve never before seen anyone say that triggering fight or flight causes hypnotic trance.

This issue of "subconscious" vs. "unconscious" will not be solved easily. To this day, people argue about those two terms...but I use "subconscious" in line with the late master of psychiatry Dr. Harry Stack Sullivan, whom I absolutely adore (his books on dreams are mind blowing). Anyhow, I think it's powerful that I could drive without being aware of my driving... I just think that's powerful.

While listening to this with headphones, I picked up a sub frequency oscillating in the background. Don't you mind guys call this a binaural frequency or something? Is this added to the video to do something to the listener? If it is, don't try sneaking it past us synthesizer guys, our ears are tuned to this.

I'm no doctor but I can say that if you do something and suffer from amnesia, after the incident, then it's possible that you were conscious when you did what you did. However, I feel that the "unconscious," as you call it, might induce amnesia too. I'm assuming you're aware of this fact, most common is suppressing a traumatic event. In my opinion, when I blacked out, that was an alcohol induced hypnotic state...in other words, I was driving under a trance="unconscious operation"
