उद्धार क्या है? प्रभु यीशु में विश्वास करने वाले सोचते हैं कि अगर वे ईमानदारी से प्रभु से प्रार्थना करें, अपने पापों को स्वीकार करें और पश्चाताप करें तो उनके पापों को क्षमा कर दिया जाएगा और उनका उद्धार हो जाएगा। फिर जब प्रभु आएंगे तो उनको सीधे स्वर्ग के राज्य में आरोहित किया जाएगा। मगर क्या उद्धार पाना वाकई इतना आसान है?
फ़िल्म के नायक, शू जिकियां ने बरसों से परमेश्वर में विश्वास किया, पूरे उत्साह से परमेश्वर के लिए खर्च किया और अपने दायित्वों को पूरा करने के लिए सब कुछ त्याग दिया। इसके लिए, चीनी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी ने उन्हें गिरफ़्तार करके यातनाएं भी दी। जेल से छूटने के बाद, उन्होंने अपने दायित्वों को निभाना जारी रखा, कुछ व्यावहारिक अनुभव हासिल किया। उनके उपदेशों और कार्य ने उनके भाई-बहनों की कुछ व्यावहारिक समस्याओं को सुलझाने में मदद की। बाद में, उनकी पत्नी को भी गिरफ़्तार कर लिया गया, लेकिन उन्होंने शिकायत नहीं की, मन में नकारात्मक भावनाओं को नहीं आने दिया और खुद को बिखरने भी नहीं दिया... इन सारी बातों की वजह से उनके भाई-बहनों ने उनकी सराहना की और उनको सम्मान दिया। शू जिकियां का मानना है कि उनके पास सत्य की वास्तविकता है और उनके स्वर्ग के राज्य में प्रवेश कर पाने में कोई समस्या नहीं है। लेकिन जल्दी ही, उनके सामने एक अप्रत्याशित परीक्षा की घड़ी आ गई - सीसीपी पुलिस की यातनाओं की वजह से उनकी पत्नी की मौत हो गई। शू जिकियां परेशान हो गए, उनके मन में परमेश्वर के लिए धारणाएं, गलतफहमियां और शिकायतें पैदा होने लगीं। परमेश्वर से विद्रोह करने और उनको धोखा देने के विचार उनके मन में आने लगे... बाद में, जब उन्हें एहसास हुआ कि वे परमेश्वर को धोखा दे रहे हैं, तब वे सोचने लगे और उनके मन में यह ख़याल आया कि जब उनके जैसे लोग परीक्षाओं का सामना करते हैं और फिर परमेश्वर की शिकायत करते हैं, उनके लिए अपने मन में गलतफहमी पैदा कर लेते हैं और उनको धोखा देते हैं, तो क्या उनको वाकई बचाया जाता है। क्या वे वाकई परमेश्वर के राज्य में प्रवेश करने के काबिल होते हैं?
