There's this chap based in UK (his channel name is hobnut i think) he's does focus quite a bit on old classic cars even buses as well as EV's. Yes, the good old classics (whether they be old cars, trucks or buses) do deserve more coverage i'll say.
@@hseochin thanks for the heads-up, I'll check it out 🙏🏽😊 Yeah, these old cars still have a lot of life left in them, it breaks my heart when I see them abandoned and 'rusting in peace'. This old gal nearly met that same fate too...
I thing I dislike about those "old classic" reviewers is that they always review the top of the line, best you can buy, but not the one that common buyer actually bought model. Like 500SEL , M5 , but this, a 300SE, is something we saw and something people actually own instead of a unicorn.
@@ChrisWeevilGarage its true chris what a sad thing when see such a good car left outside in the rain and shine left rustingbin peace. To me the policy is if you no longer love it just past it to someone who addored it and looking forward for it.
Beautiful car my friend. Sadly not too many old Mercedes are left. I recently bought a 97 w140 s600. I’m slowly rebuilding it to an AMG tribute car. I did all the work to it and slowly bringing it back to its glory. I found most of the original AMG parts for it. There is nothing more satisfying than doing the work on your own car. Because you built it the way you want it. Looking forward to future videos.
Wow!! The S600 is awe-inspiring to say the least, heartiest congratulations on your acquisition and current epic rebuild!! Exactly right about that indescribable feeling of restoring and driving something that u saved from the brink of death, it's how I felt all through the journey from KL to Phuket, Thailand with this W126, grinning all the way like a kid in a toy store. How do u put a price on that? Thanks for watching and all the very best with your S600 AMG project!!🙏🏽😊
Chris Wee. Thanks my friend. I am fond with old Mercedes. I had owned a 1992 w124 400e, w202 C43 AMG, and w140 S500 Grand Edition. Now I have the s600 and it’s a blast driving it. Yes it has a V12. It’s not fast but it’s a cruiser. It’s all about the drive.
@@1koolkat76 Nice collection!! As for me, in the past in addition to four previous w126 300SE as I mentioned in the video, I've acquired and restored a W115 and a S123 wagon, as well as the oldest car I've ever owned in my life, a 1968 W108 280S. All of them were incredible cars to restore and drive. The S123 remains the only car I truly regret selling, I should have kept that one 😊
When I got married in 1995, my in laws gave me a Mercedes Benz 280 SEL to use as it was totally underutilized & ignored. It was a 1982 model & it only covered 5600 km since new. It became my daily drive. Drove it for 3 years or so before my in laws sold it to a relative (who was in desperate need of a car; crashed his). Furthest I drove the car was to PD post wedding. Managed 160km/h before abruptly slowing down as I realized the tires were old 😊
Chris I just bought w126 280 SEL 1983 MODEL AUTO. but the engine head gasket burnt. Please give an advise should I throw the 280 engine like yours which I have seen before and change it to a 300 black engine 6 cylinders. Please advise me I you dont mind. I did sent you an email but I didnt get reply from you
I know the feeling. I rescued my '84 500 SEL from the scrap yard. It was not running at the time and had been sitting for more than 10 years. I loved these cars growing up and jumped at the chance to get to have and work on this machine. I've had it since 2016. Old cars are fun!
Spot on Basil!! This design to me is timeless, and the external proportions are perfect in my book, hence why I've been a fan of them for as long as I can remember 😊
I drive my 1975 450 SEL not quite every day, but often. When we went to buy it, we drove 580 miles out of state to Cincinnati, Ohio. I looked it over, and test drove it and bought it. The next day I drove home. The car sailed along the highway with power and prowess. It was a pleasant trip. I’m slowly restoring the car myself. Everything works on the car except the sunroof motor. I took the roof apart, cleaned and lubricated the tracks and shoes. So I can open it manually. The motor needs to be replaced. I’ve taken my instrument cluster out to solder a jumper wire in the piezoelectric dimmer switch for the dash lights. The dash lights went out because of the dimmer. Since I had the cluster out I took it apart and cleaned it up. It looks great now and the lights work. Not bad for 44 years old.
What an incredible story!! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing that, wow! It's awesome that you travelled so far for the car, but it sounds so worth it. And restoring it yourself, that's amazing, well done!! Thanks for watching and the feedback, I loved reading this, thank you!!😊😊😊🙏🏽
@@LilyoftheValeyrising thank you!! So great to hear that, I try to do as much as possible for my cars on my own too, but the really technical stuff I leave to the pros. Thing is though these old car are not very technical at all, quite basic in fact, so I find myself doing more and more, which is great. Thanks again for watching!!👍🏾😊
You made my day bro. After I dont know how many decades I am seeing a cassette player and tape. Today saw one beautiful white color 300sel. Still can see this beauty in Ipoh compared to other cities.
Hahahaha!! I still have a lot of cassettes lying around 😉 SELs are gorgeous, someday I want a SEC though, that would be my ultimate goal 😊 Thanks for watching and the comment!!
I own a 1983 300SD, I purchase many parts at junk yards, and online auto parts stores. I love the sound of the diesel engine with turbo! I have driven the car to Mexico. I always turn peoples heads when they see me pull up to a truck stop, and pump diesel into the car! To me the 1983 300SD body is still a good looking car to this day. It is easy to work on, parts are at many junk yards, and cheap too. And it will get up and move, giving you a very smooth ride!
Absolutely right! I too find quite a lot of parts from second hand parts shops as well as online. Of late FB marketplace has been a good source of parts too, as well as the many FB pages dedicated to these old cars 👍🏾😊 Thanks for watching!!🙏🏽😀
I remembered as a kid riding around in a w126 380SEL owned by friend of my dad. Velour seats and with sunroof. Still can remember the smoothness and the torque surge and squat whenever drive or reverse was engaged
You're welcome. Was lucky enough as a kid to experience riding a few of these good old german cars such as the following E30 320i auto with still the stock hubcaps Audi 100 C3 pre facelift automatic 3 speed E34 520i manual 12 valve W123 300D automatic (I'm not making this up) And when I got my license managed to get the chance to drive the following W126 300SE E34 525i 24 valve automatic E30 318i manual facelift Audi 100 C4 W124 200 (non E) manual W140 400SEL W123 200D manual

My dad bought one 280SE last year, this car is surprisingly great. the transmission is still smooth, although this car had he feel of struggling during acceleration from total stop, but when it moves, it surely gives you the satisfaction.
Nice!! Well done and congrats to you dad, he has excellent taste!! Curiously the 280SE has a DOHC engine, while the bigger 300SE is SOHC. That always perplexed me. But yes, the 280SE has very smooth acceleration, but just be gentle on the pedal, cos it can be quite thirsty 😉 Thanks for watching and the feedback!!🙏🏽😊
Can you do a walkaround video, talk about more trivia stuff about the car, bits and pieces that are significant to the car. LIke the hidden wipers, when you are sitting inside the car you can't see the wipers, invisible heater lines, first aid kit and so on.... I drove my father's no replacement for displacement 380SE on Plus Highway doing 160km/h accidentally, as it was so quiet and comfortable, the engine wasn't even at 3000 RPM, the only noise it had was coming from the passenger side mirror as the mirror housing couldn't fit back into the rubber gourmets. One thing that amazes me to this day is its turning radius, how the wheels "tip toe" when you turn it to one side. Wonderful car.
One of them more amazing things about the car, the way it almost dislodges its "arms" during a full lock turn. Thanks for the request on a walk around vid, sure can, but later ya, in the meantime, I actually did a walk around during the video on new tint regulations, the longer one 😊
The W126 or the W123 were really bullet proof. Had a W123 for 17 years. Once i forgot to replace the lub cap after adding the lubrication oil. (Yes, was an idiot) Then drove all the way from JB to KL while the lubrication oil was spewing out underneath the bonnet. the warning light came alerted me near Kajang. Guess what? The engine block didn't crack. Wonder the Mercedes nowadays will be that tough?
Hahahaha!! Wow, that's an event worth remembering!! The only time my w126 has ever warned me about anything is mentioned in the video, the brake-pad wear indicator started to flicker. Needless to say I was pretty chuffed it still worked after 36yrs 😁
I love this video and everything you had to tell about the car and your history with it :) I did my apprenticeship on MB's, specifically W123's, W124's, W126's, W140's and W210's. I now own a W212 estate, and I love it to bits. It is still a proper Merc. And drives and feels like the old ones. Which is a good thing in my eyes. :) In terms of fuel economy, my W212 E300 (Hybrid) is pretty much like yours. Shocking in town, but gets much better on the highway. Engine idling at around 120-130kmh. Thanks for uploading the video. Really enjoyed it!
Thank you so much!!! You made my day with this excellent comment!! I take this old gal out as often as possible, in between test cars, and it still amazes me that after more than three decades, it's still a wonderful car to be in. Thanks again for commenting and the feedback, really enjoyed reading it!!🙏🏽😊
Thank you!! Yes James, me too, sometimes I can't believe she's 36yrs old this year, THIRTY SIX!! And as u rightly said, still plodding along, doing what she was made to do. Makes me happy just thinking about this 😀 Thanks for watching!!🙏🏽😊
I recently bought a white w126 280se and love it. Has 240,000 kms on it. Is automatic. Has a couple of issues but I’m sorting those out as this car has stolen my heart haha
So great to hear this! I know exactly how u feel Tiki Liska, because I felt the same when I was driving this car home, even before I'd done anything to it by way of restoration, I knew this car was gonna be special, and it certainly has been so since day 1. Thanks for sharing your story, very much appreciated 🙏🏽👍🏾😊😊😊
Gorgeous w126!!! I've owned 4 of them both coupe and sedan. My current fleet is a 1991 300 sel that I'm restoring and swapping to mnualg. The other a 1989 560 sel that is getting all the upgrades and options from 1991 years and 80s correct modifications
Fantastic!! That's a very cool line up u have 😊 I too have had 4 in the past, but all sedans, would love the SEC coupe someday, seriously droolworthy 😊 Thanks for watching and the feedback!!👍🏾😃
Excellent job Chris! I always appreciate seeing old cars still with their original stereo units. My dad still has his W126 300se exactly like yours. (Cept he changed his stereo to a Bluetooth Gizmo which is okay but a bit flashy in my opinion in contrast with the more classy styling but oh well). I used to own W123 . It was orange colour . Very beautiful, however sadly I realise it was a lemon as they were rust in all the crucial areas (Mercedes hides rust very well) it was mechanically excellent and it was the prestigious black engine variant hahahahaha. But yeh had to let it go. Looking for another classic to be back in the game🙇🙇😏
Excellent!! Thanks for watching and the feedback Usop, I enjoyed reading your comment! The W123 is a wonderful youngtimer classic, can be daily-driven too, brilliant cars! There are some nice ones for sale on Mudah, and they cost more than a W124 now. I've even seen cheaper W210s!! That's the power and allure of these old Mercs 👍🏾🙏🏽😊 Damn, I miss my S123 wagon 😊
@@ChrisWeevilGarage agreed! Older car also I must say I find to be much safer in the sense that it makes you more aware of your surroundings. My W123 I notice and even driving one of my friends 1990 Proton Saga. Both of these cars has such excellent visibility they're literally no blindspots. Especially the Saga. I drove my mom's new Corrola with her as the passenger and I had to manoeuver my body in interesting positions just to see what's going on. HAHHAHH nothing against new cars but I notice random stuff! Rambling too much now! Again love the content keep it up
@@usopyeh2340 hahahaha!! Cheers bro, I will indeed!! Yup, even Kon mentioned the excellent all-round visibility when he tested my BMW E30. The pillars were much thinner with older cars, and new safely regulations have made said pillars huge, which is good and bad 😊
Ahhh these square Mercedes brings back great memories for me. My dad had a W124 back in KL when I was growing up. I still remember the distinctive engine fan sound as he pulled up the driveway. As the car was a grey import from the UK, it had a sunroof that was still working when he had to sell it off about 8 years ago (it was 18 years old at that time). Anyways keep up the good work mate; most motoring journalist only talk about new cars but old cars deserve our love too! Cheers and would love to ride in your W126 someday!
Thank you Nicholas W!! Yes, that tornado sound of the fan is indeed very distinctive, I love it! Nice trip down memory lane there with your dad's W124, that's a solid car too, I have a few friends that own them 👍🏾😊 Thanks for watching and the support, stay tuned for more to come!🙏🏽😊
Used to wash this, my dads car in 1983 till year 2000..this was when Merc builds super tough cars..the fuel tank is a 100 litre tank so not suprised on th range as we use to drive this car back to Alor Setar every year and there was no highway then..nice the see Blaupunk New York again...does it still work..?
One thing I remembered about this car is how smooth the transmission changes gear. It's like before changing gears (up) it will engage a clutch for 1or2 second. Then only the next gear is engaged. Try flooring the accelerator and you'll get what I mean.
Brilliant!! Really happy to hear this, thank you for watching and for the feedback Niki, I too look forward to driving my W126 for many more years to come, they're really great cars👍🏾😊

Absolutely love your car We have a W126 300SE that I’m in the process of restoring It drives well still work to do I’ve done the brakes and absolutely love how well they work The interior is good The paint is not as the clear coat has failed on top So once I have iron out all the other little bugs then I’ll paint it
Thank you Michael!! So great to hear u have a 300SE, it's a fine, fine automobile indeed 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾😊 Hey, that's exactly what I did too, sorted out the mechanical and electrical stuff, spruced-up the interior and then painted it back to its original Silver colour😊 All the best with your Sonderklasse!!😊🙏🏽
Thanks Chris We were lucky enough to be given the car It had just sat as a spare car and not much use sadly I’ve found so many small jobs that needed fixing as in the door locks and low level oil sensor leaking(pouring) oil What wheels do you have on your 289SE? Cheers Michael
@@michaelharrison500 currently I have on a set of 15-inch BBS "basket weave" alloys that I'm trying out just for fun, but I still also run the car on its original wheels, which are also 15's. I tried 16-inch alloys once, the car didn't like them. It rides and handles a lot better on 15s 😊 Hey at least your car was a spare car when u got it, mine was a spare PARTS car, lol! Funny story: When I took the car to get its rear power windows fixed (I thought the motors were jammed from lack of use) the mechanic told me "sorry cannot fix". I asked if they were too jammed up, and be said to me dead-pan "No, cannot fix because nothing to fix, the motors are missing" Yup, they'd been cannibalized somewhere along the way for another W126 🤣 Thankfully I managed to get a reconditioned set of motors though. BTW, if u want a better look at my car from the outside, please check out my 2 videos on "Car Tint" 😊
Hey Chris Those wheels do look great and so do the originals best of both worlds My original wheels somewhere along the line found another home I think as the ones on the car look like the originals but are poor copies that even the centre MB caps would fit So I’ve now got later proper Mercedes 300SE rims to fit My other non standard item is I’ve painted my grille satin black ( just the plastic part) as mine was badly weathered and the grille bars were somewhat damaged so I’ve repaired them Not everyone’s taste but it looks way better than it did
@@ChrisWeevilGarage Wow you replied quick Chris! Thanks for that! My family has a W126 380SE. If I may ask, would you recommend a E30 318i manual or a E36 6-pots auto? I would love to hunt for a E36 manual but that's quite rare...
@@ChrisWeevilGarage Thanks for the input. That means a lot! I have been eyeing one right outside of my house (E30 318i Manual) Now I feel even more certain about it
Hey Chris great video as always, I watched this video at least 3-4 times and it never gets old. Lol. It’s good to see oldies being restored and given a 2nd life on the road. I’m considering to get a w126 or w124 in the near future. Just wanted to know from your experience, how much do u need on average to set aside for the initial maintenance(all fluid changes) and spare parts to get it running on a daily basis without having any breakdowns? Aesthetics aside as this can be done gradually. Keep up the great work!
Hey thanks man!! Thanks for watching and the comment, much appreciated bro. Well in terms of cost it all depends on what u "need" to do and "want" to do. I've found that u can get these cars running well for just a couple of grand, that's the "need" part, but then the costs can spiral once the "wants" come in, it's a different matter. For example, I've spent at least 10k all in getting this W126 to this level, over a few years, and recently another 5k for a full engine overhaul/rebuild, so be wary of that!! I would reckon though that if u have 5k to spend above and beyond the purchase price of the car, you'll be happy with the results. All the best!!🙏🏽👍🏾😀
Hi chris ian from Australia I daily drive my 114 250 6 cylinder 1973since I bought it in2001 about 3days a week and use my 1990 260e the rest i also owned a 1983 380se from 2005 to 2014 beautiful cruiser but it cost me a small fortune in maintenence mainly tlming a chain breaking twice the 2 6cylinder mercs have been very reliable but i still would like another 126 maybe a420se .regards ian
Hi Ian!! Wow, an amazing collection of classic Mercs u have there, kudos and congrats!! I'm on my 5th W126 now, I simply adore them, but in the past overall had a W115, S123 wagon and a 1968 W108, lovely old car that was 😊 Thank you so much for sharing, really appreciate it!!🙏🏽😀 PS: Yea, get that W126, haha!!
Does the 280 move off in 2nd gear? My prior daily is a 91 350 SDL Turbo. The W126 can really hold up well to modern vehicles. Looks like you’ve fitted the late interior to that car? And no sunroof? That was standard in the US, I’ve never seen a W126 in person without a sunroof.
Not sure about 2nd gear, I don't think so. As for the sunroof, many models here didn't come with them over here in Malaysia, some did, the 300SE esp. My interior was rewrapped, it was pretty worn after more than 3 decades 😁 Thanks for watching!!👍🏾😊
I agree .. some old classic should never die . It should be restored and driven . On the other note , just to check can one re-register a used car with a new registration number ? I heard so many schools of thought . Appreciate if you can give some insights . Thanks Chris !
Totally agreed! Yes u can, in fact this W126s original number was 89, which the previous owner kept. He transferred that number to a new vehicle, and I went and got a new number for the car, 2868. The cheapest way to keep a number is to buy a kapchai and use the reg number for it, you can't however, just go buy a new number, the old number on the car has to go onto another vehicle. Old existing number to new vehicle is allowed, but old to old cannot, one vehicle in the number transfer must be new 😊
@@ChrisWeevilGarage .. Thanks Chris !! This info finally clears the myth.. ha ha !! Keep on doing reviews of old but classics . I share the same feeling & sentiment as you do Chris... Old is gold. Call me stubborn if they want, but while my contemporaries kept up with times by owning latest cars (and keeping the banks happy), I decided, rather late to pull the handbrake but thankfully so, better late than never 😅, by keeping our family's Celica. Admittedly it's a continuous headache for me to source the spare parts but it has never failed me as my daily despite sometimes limping due to the scarcity of spare parts of wear & tear but thankfully it brings me home every time 🤲 🏆 I'm also looking to acquire either an old school W126 300SE or a W124 260E when the opportunity presents itself as an alternative daily for me 🤲... Despite so many naysayers among my contemporaries whom advise me against such thought due to potential maintenence headache, your videos of the W124 & W126 assured me that there's still hope in my believe 🤲 🥇 Thank you kindly Chris and fellow viewers for all the honest & also realistic insights... I also like the old Mercedes cars. I am 70 years old now, but back in 1983 I bought a 1960 220SE Cabriolet. I drove this 23 year old car to work every day, putting on about 65000 miles over the next five years! It cost me only $16000 USD back then, but today in America a restored example can go for as much as $200,000. If these old Mercedes had not increased so much in value I think that I would still be driving them today.
Greetings Bob, thank you so much for sharing that lovely trip down memory lane sir, I was smiling the whole time while reading it!! I'm happy to tell you that there are still a few units of the 220SE "Ponton" here in Malaysia too, a lovely classic indeed. The oldest Merc I've ever bought and restored was a 1968 280S W108, and I also had a W115 200 some time ago. I really love these older Mercedes-Benz cars, and I'll be keeping this Sonderklasse of mine for a very long time to come. Thank you for watching and again for that great recap, do stay tuned for more to come in future 🙏🏽😊
Thanks for your kind words. In addition to the 220SE I also drove on a daily basis a 1967 300SE coupe [dark blue with saddle hides] with stick shift which I purchased in 1975 for $4,150 USD. This was my first car! Later on, I drove to school in a 1967 250SE sunroof coupe. Finally, I bought a 1968 250SE convertible in 2000 just for weekend fun. My best friend was a Mercedes specialist and he made sure that all these cars ran well. Then I made a big mistake and bought a six-year old 2003 SL500. The first really nice looking car since 1971 in my opinion. But it was a nightmare to maintain! All those beautiful old Mercedes of the 50's and 60's were now collector cars with astronomical price tags so I have had to switch brands and now drive a wonderfully reliable Lexus ES 350.
@@boblacks945 I love the SL's!! Was very close to buying one some time ago, but the deal fell thru. Now they're getting more expensive! Would also like to own a C126 SEC someday, really like those big coupes, but again, prices are getting higher here as well. Hey, nothing wrong with a Lexus, especially the ES350, smooth as silk!!😊
The first Mercedes that I considered buying after finishing college was the 190 SL. I always have liked the rounded-body look. I can recall speaking to a guy in the early 1970's who was selling his nice SL for only $2,500. I guess that I did not buy the car because I had not saved up enough money at that time. In recent years, I saw a restored strawberry-colored one in the Boca Raton Mall with an asking price around $200,000!! But, I did get to do a partial cosmetic restoration on a 1956 SL that my friend left at my mechanic's shop. The most fun was discovering that the nasty looking chrome on his car could look like new again with the application of fine steel wool. I learned this trick from a Rolls Royce dealer. By the way, there are about ONE HUNDRED pieces of chrome on all those 1960's Mercedes that I owned. The prettiest SL that I ever saw and never forgot was painted in pale yellow with a dark blue hardtop and bright red leather. So many memories...
Timeless indeed!! The 190E and W124 are lovely cars too, the latter in particular is built like a tank, overengineered. Parts are easy to find too because so many are still on the road. The "Baby Benz" 190E is a damn nice car too, and I almost bought one recently 😊
Hi i have a 1987 124 260E currently stuck at a yard due to jammed parking brakes. The car interior has deteriorated under rain and sunlight. My mechanics said he can't find new parts to replace the jammed brakes. I and my son love this old 124. Would like to tap your view as to the costs to rebuilt back the whole interior plus if parts are still available. Could you help ? Reds Gary
Hi Gary, thanks for your comment! Without seeing the car it's a bit difficult to gauge what kind of expenditure you're looking at in terms of the interior, however the brake issue can be sorted quite easily I'm sure, if u can get the car towed to Kenzone in Kelana Jaya PJ SS6/6 to let Ken have a go at it 🙏🏽😊
Grew up in Singapore. Used to see a black Selangor (N plates) 300 SEL around my HDB, think a facelifted version... wonder if still on the roads. Lovely car!!

@@glennhoddle10 oh yeah, definitely so. Great video Chris! Im about to get a 300SE but the car is in Penang. Guess will wait till after the lockdown. By the way was it the Alex you mentioned in old klang road?
How much have you spent for the car, if I would like to get into restoring old car? And which model do you recommend if I would like to restore one with the least amount of budget
Short 2nd question, very long answer!! I think in total I've spent close to rm15k on this car already, in more than 5yrs of ownership, including the purchase price. As for what car to buy to restore, none will be inexpensive, unless u buy one that's already almost all done up, like my KE30. This W126 was bought at almost scrap value and done up slowly 😊

Hi Chris, I love your videos and passion for these old cars. Watching your videos got me hooked on these old cars. I’ve so far owned a W124 230E and a W210 E280 Avantgarde. Love them to bits especially the emotions that come from owning it and yes, over the years, putting them back together, even if it’s just installing a refurbished Becker radio, is fulfilling. I would just like to seek your advice on getting a W126. I came across one in black. It’s a 1988 300SE going for about RM12.5k. It’ll be the first time I’ll be getting one with a M103 3 litre engine. Just would like to seek your experience on ownership in the past. Are parts easily available and are they much more difficult or expensive to repair as compared to the smaller displacement Mercs? More importantly, do they generally fare well in Malaysian conditions? Sorry for commenting on an old video. Hope to meet up with you someday. Take care and stay safe. Thank you for your time and I look forward to more videos.
Thanks for watching and the comment Thomas!! Great to hear you're giving these grand old gals a second chance too 👍🏾😊 To answer your question, yes it's relatively easy to maintain a W126 Mercedes, I'm onto my 5th one now and I've never had any real issues, except for late last year when this old gal overheated when the clutch fan jammed and I had to overhaul the engine. An electric fan has since been fitted and she's running really well again. They're built to last but preventive maintenance is key when it comes to these cars. Periodic maintenance is a must. All the best with your acquisition!!👍🏾🙏🏽😊
@@ChrisWeevilGarage Thank you for the insightful reply, Chris. Really appreciate it. You've really inspired me to give these old dames a 2nd chance. To be honest, if it weren't for you, I would have completely given up on these cars. I started off with a secondhand 2001 BMW X5. An E53 model. I always wanted a split tailgate SUV similar to a Range Rover Classic. Found a really affordable one. But I guess her previous owner didn't love her that much so she punched my gut and ran away with my wallet. Had to let her go after costing me a small fortune on maintenance and parts replacement. But watching your videos beckoned me to give it another shot. This time, it was the W124 230E and she was a dream. The rest is as they say, an ongoing history. Haha. I'll definitely take note of the fan once I get the car. I just finished watching your latest video on paying OMV and it really helped me made my decision because I was caught in a back and forth with the owner of the car with regards to the price. I'll comment on the other video. Once again, thank you so much for taking the time to respond with insightful feedback. It's going to be awesome owning a W126. Take care and stay safe during the MCO. Hi Chris . i really your videos and its great to see that beautiful W126. A few questions if i may ask. The interior looks immaculate, same goes for your W124 200E,is that a restoration or just very well kept? Secondly, what are the prices of such vehicles in Malaysia?
Thank you for watching and the comment too, the w124's interior came like that, and ironically it was refurbished at the same place I did my w126 at, CarZone Interior. U can find them on Facebook. Costs depend on the level of refurbishing, anywhere from 3k to 10k even. It could be the fact that cars imported to Malaysia at that time didn’t have seatbelts due to Malaysian regulations right? Shows how much we have progressed when it comes to safety regulations
I say it depends on what kind of old car...i certainly continue to prefer the mid 80's to 90's generation of old cars, in which the Mercedes-Benz W126,124,140,210 etc. were produced. The design concepts continue to make more sense than all the models they made over the last 15 years i.e. i'm broadly 'in agreement' with Mercedes-Benz design approach up till around year 2004 models..their newer models (2004 onwards) i don't tend to like as much compared to their older ones as such ! If looking for a W126, i settle for the 260 SE, 300 SE versions instead as these use the quieter, smoother running, more efficient updated engines as the earlier 280 SE uses the noisier generation engines with more obvious mechanical sounds from the tappets etc. From this video of the 280 SE, the interior noise levels overall seem noisier than expected i'll say...not much engine sound heard but the tyre / road noises seem on the higher side than what's normally expected from a Mercedes-Benz i observe ? Could it be whoever did the vehicle restoration work took out the original sound proofing materials without fully replacing them or substituting them with cheaper but inferior non-original parts ? As far as i'm concerned, i see great potential for modification of old cars (of iconic designs like such series of Mercedes-Benz) into full EV's i.e. dump away the old fossil fuel engines & install state-of-art electric motors & batteries say modified from their EQC series ! Daimler AG should have a 'classic conversion' department to facilitate such pursuits so that people are able to continue to prefer the classic designs over the newer models, not because they can't afford a new car model but simply because they prefer the classic design & styling etc. which can only be gotten in the good old ones which they are more overall 'in-agreement' with !
Thank you for your comment!! The microphone does pick up a lot of ambient sounds, but by and large I'm still happy with the NVH of my 280SE, I doubt there are many cars out there that can claim this kind of ride, handling and NVH from a 36yr old car.
(Yes, was an idiot)
Then drove all the way from JB to KL while the lubrication oil was spewing out underneath the bonnet. the warning light came alerted me near Kajang.
I love this video and everything you had to tell about the car and your history with it :)
I did my apprenticeship on MB's, specifically W123's, W124's, W126's, W140's and W210's. I now own a W212 estate, and I love it to bits. It is still a proper Merc. And drives and feels like the old ones. Which is a good thing in my eyes. :)
In terms of fuel economy, my W212 E300 (Hybrid) is pretty much like yours.
Lovely car. Great to see old daily drivers still doing what they were built for! Cheers.

Fantastic!! That's a very cool line up u have 😊
I too have had 4 in the past, but all sedans, would love the SEC coupe someday, seriously droolworthy 😊
Thanks for watching and the feedback!!👍🏾😃
That's the power and allure of these old Mercs 👍🏾🙏🏽😊
Damn, I miss my S123 wagon 😊
Nice trip down memory lane there with your dad's W124, that's a solid car too, I have a few friends that own them 👍🏾😊

Thank you for sharing that memory!! Nice one 👍🏾🙏🏽😊
Yes, the Blaupunkt still works, I'm amazed that it does😄
One thing I remembered about this car is how smooth the transmission changes gear. It's like before changing gears (up) it will engage a clutch for 1or2 second. Then only the next gear is engaged. Try flooring the accelerator and you'll get what I mean.
Yes correct!! But this car prefers smooth rather than spirited driving 😁

Absolutely love your car
We have a W126 300SE that I’m in the process of restoring
It drives well still work to do
I’ve done the brakes and absolutely love how well they work
The interior is good
The paint is not as the clear coat has failed on top
So once I have iron out all the other little bugs then I’ll paint it
Thank you Michael!! So great to hear u have a 300SE, it's a fine, fine automobile indeed 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾😊
Hey, that's exactly what I did too, sorted out the mechanical and electrical stuff, spruced-up the interior and then painted it back to its original Silver colour😊
All the best with your Sonderklasse!!😊🙏🏽
Thanks Chris
We were lucky enough to be given the car
It had just sat as a spare car and not much use sadly
I’ve found so many small jobs that needed fixing as in the door locks and low level oil sensor leaking(pouring) oil
What wheels do you have on your 289SE?
Cheers Michael
Oh ours is Anthracite Grey
@@michaelharrison500 currently I have on a set of 15-inch BBS "basket weave" alloys that I'm trying out just for fun, but I still also run the car on its original wheels, which are also 15's. I tried 16-inch alloys once, the car didn't like them. It rides and handles a lot better on 15s 😊
Hey at least your car was a spare car when u got it, mine was a spare PARTS car, lol!
Funny story: When I took the car to get its rear power windows fixed (I thought the motors were jammed from lack of use) the mechanic told me "sorry cannot fix". I asked if they were too jammed up, and be said to me dead-pan "No, cannot fix because nothing to fix, the motors are missing"
Yup, they'd been cannibalized somewhere along the way for another W126 🤣
Thankfully I managed to get a reconditioned set of motors though.
BTW, if u want a better look at my car from the outside, please check out my 2 videos on "Car Tint" 😊
Hey Chris
Those wheels do look great and so do the originals best of both worlds
My original wheels somewhere along the line found another home I think as the ones on the car look like the originals but are poor copies that even the centre MB caps would fit
So I’ve now got later proper Mercedes 300SE rims to fit
My other non standard item is I’ve painted my grille satin black ( just the plastic part) as mine was badly weathered and the grille bars were somewhat damaged so I’ve repaired them
Not everyone’s taste but it looks way better than it did
have lots of memories about this model also chris, when i was in primary school. thanks for the video

Chris Wee thanks for the information! I’ll be sure to keep that in mind
I'm on my 5th W126 now, I simply adore them, but in the past overall had a W115, S123 wagon and a 1968 W108, lovely old car that was 😊
Thank you so much for sharing, really appreciate it!!🙏🏽😀
PS: Yea, get that W126, haha!!
By the way, the speedo meter is easy to take out and clean. Just remember to clean all the connectors at the back before you plug them in again.
Yeah, maybe I'll get to that since we're all stuck at home now, haha!!👍🏾🙏🏽😀
Does the 280 move off in 2nd gear?
My prior daily is a 91 350 SDL Turbo. The W126 can really hold up well to modern vehicles. Looks like you’ve fitted the late interior to that car? And no sunroof? That was standard in the US, I’ve never seen a W126 in person without a sunroof.
Not sure about 2nd gear, I don't think so. As for the sunroof, many models here didn't come with them over here in Malaysia, some did, the 300SE esp. My interior was rewrapped, it was pretty worn after more than 3 decades 😁
Thanks for watching!!👍🏾😊
I agree .. some old classic should never die .
Admittedly it's a continuous headache for me to source the spare parts but it has never failed me as my daily despite sometimes limping due to the scarcity of spare parts of wear & tear but thankfully it brings me home every time 🤲 🏆

Great to hear you're giving these grand old gals a second chance too 👍🏾😊
To answer your question, yes it's relatively easy to maintain a W126 Mercedes, I'm onto my 5th one now and I've never had any real issues, except for late last year when this old gal overheated when the clutch fan jammed and I had to overhaul the engine.
Cheers.

Any problem or difficulty in getting the car insurance renewal? Only third party coverage?
Correct. Only 3rd party fire and theft, and no, not a problem getting the car insured at all, there's a whole panel of insurers to choose from, even at the post office 😊
Hi Chris . i really your videos and its great to see that beautiful W126.
The used prices of both models vary according to variant and condition, a good place to see this variance would be on www.mudah.com.my 😊

I didn’t expect that kind of jimat for the fuel! Omg. Then how many km per litre chris?
Only with no traffic on the open highway, and cruising along sedately can I attain that kind of FC with this car though. Haven't done the actual KML or L/100km calculations yet. I do recall that the trip-meter read 597km from fill-up and the low-fuel warning light hadn't come on yet. I have a photo of it somewhere 😊
Was the interior two tone? Cream and burnt orange or biscuit?
Yes it is!! It's beige & tan combo 😃
Would a W126 be suitable for a daily PJ-Shah Alam-Klang Putrajaya And every once of twice a month PJ-JB or PJ - Penang trip?

I realized theres no seatbetls for rear passengers?? was this a normal thing for the benz in the 80s?
Sharp eyes u have!! Yeah, I think they didn't become mandatory here till much later, this car was made in 1983!! Thanks for watching 🙏🏽😊
Bruno Sacco definitely did a great job on the design and styling of these old dames 😄
