- Allow me to introduce...Middy! Middy (short for 'Midnight') is a beautiful, 7-month old, all-black cat which I recently adopted. It became obvious very early on that Middy was not your typical black cat. He showcased strange behaviors and unusual features which made myself, neighbors, and friends wonder. Middy follows me everywhere I go, fetches items like a dog, talks back, is very vocal and interactive, and has big bright gold eyes which suggest to you that he knows more than you think he does. He is very active, loyal, trusting, and extremely well tempered. Most notable of his physical features is his short hair which has the sheen of leather and is as soft as velvet. He is all black and quite muscular and agile.
We're all but positive he's a Bombay as these many characteristics fit this particular breed of cat to a T. Bombays are rare. There are 18 different breeds of cats which may be black and Bombay is just one of them. I would highly recommend the Bombay as a pet but only if you are willing to give it LOTS of attention (they demand it).
Bombay cats have got to be the most beautiful cat breeds ever. If there sleek black coats weren't enough, those gorgeous copper eyes could melt anyone's heart. I would know. I am the proud parent of a lovely Bombay kitten.

Cats aren't cold, they are just reserved until they see a person loves them and then they can trust. A cat doesn't even have to be a special breed to be a sweet and fun companion. I'm happy for you and Middy. 😻
Just put my baby girl onyx to sleep today. 20 year old bombay whom was given to my when i was 5 by my dad. He rescued her from tenants who placed a rubber band around her tail. I took excellent care of her and just this past weekend her troubled back legs finally gave out and she had hyperthyroidism and i think kidney failure. Old age in general. But she came to me one last time last night and snuggled with me one last time.
I never felt more emotional than when i had to make the decision. But she was an amazing cat, excellent hunter, beautiful, cute, and attention demanding of everyone.
I miss her so much, and bombays in general are just a very loving amazing breed.
+Soviless99 My Bombay lived until the age of 19, but we tried to keep him alive, which we shouldn't have, because he was suffering. He couldn't stand up or breathe right in the end. We wanted to have him at home when he died, but we did it the wrong way, and I'm sure he suffered more for it. Now I know that some vets will come to the house so your pet can die in his own home and not some cold, sterile environment like a vet clinic. I feel for you, and know that your Onyx is over the Rainbow Bridge waiting for you! :)

Ive never been faced with such a difficult decision in my life. i also feel like a grew up a lot since i lost my childhood friend, its difficult to explain. im sorry about your kitty as well :( . Onyx was in a state much like you describe. she was meowing sadly and pitifully the night before i had her put to sleep. And she managed to crawl up and snuggle with me one last time. she was not really moving at all the next day and her face was gaunt and her eyes cloudier than ever. onyx was warm, in her favorite basket with my arms around her when she went to sleep.
Quite often we humans try so hard to do the right thing that we end up thinking we did the wrong thing.
Sorry for the loss of your cat. But there's no way in hell this cat was a Bombay when there's maybe half a dozen breeders of them in the country and even pet quality kittens START at around $800. Your cat was a black domestic - no breed like over 97% of cats.

bombay cats are more dependent on you than dogs..
they never leave you alone,always asking for love and attention,they love to lie down on you when you read or watch tv...

What?! Would not hurt a fly? I don't envy that fly! Bombay catches everything that moves by his nose! He's an inborn hunter. I understand what you meant, though. And agree with that.

@@TrueCerulean I have a bombay cat, they like snuggling, play fetch, brings me a hair tie so i can throw and brings it back to me over and over again, also get very attached to their owners. His name is Gordito and when I call his name he comes running and throws himself on the floor for belly rubs. The difference is these are quiet cats but very loving. The cat dog type of cat sounds about right. My bombay is my snuggle buddy lol. ...I forgot to add he knocks on my door and scratches the sliding glass door like a puppy when he sees me outside by the pool. He only does that if he sees me outside, wants to be near me.

I found an stray 4 wk old kitten 6 years ago. Jet black, gold eyes, and from the moment he saw me, the little shit wouldn't stop following me around. 6 years later, mikah is a indoor only cat, who enjoys constantly following his daddy around the house.
6 months ago I decided to get a cat, my daughter and I ended up getting an all black cat and named him Midnight. 😊 I had no idea until after researching that our Midnight is a Bombay cat. He is such an amazing cat and has brought so much joy to us.

Bombays are the bomb!!! My late girl Daisy was a sweet, gentle, playful and caring cat. Her sister Rose is still with us at 15 yrs. Anyone looking for a quiet companion should get one. We didn’t know our girls were Bombays until they grew up. So glad we got to be their family.
I am a dog lover and have a staffy cross Bullmastif, about 10 weeks ago I heard a cat up the side of my house, but it sounded like a little kitten from what I could hear.
Then about 6 weeks ago I saw a black little cat/kitten, running from underneath my VL Turbo which is parked in my backyard, a couple of days later I saw it again but this time I called out to it, and it came straight to me, I have been feeding it for the last 4 weeks I also wormed it as I thought it was only around 10 weeks old, which I found out today from my local vet that she is around 8-12 months old as she has got her adult teeth already.
I had to book the little bugger in to be spayed this Friday as other cats are starting to come around and do naughty things to her, as she seems to fight them all off as they run like hell after she takes half there fur off.
Anyways after doing some research she seems to be a Bombay cat which I am glad about as they seem to be a very good breed, best part being the don't shed much fur.
I asked all the neighbors if they were missing a cat/kitten and no one seems to be missing a cat/kitten, so looks like I am the proud new owner.
My dog Tiger got used to her in about 2 weeks time, they both eat together as I put there bowls next to each other, at dinner time they are both sitting at the sliding door waiting for me to feed them, they look so cute together she loves trying to sneak up on him and attack him but not full on just playing which is funny to watch, my dog wont leave her alone till he gets too tired of following her around all day.
The other day she come flying around a corner full speed only to find my dog blocking her way, she put one paw up in the air and slid for about meter whilst pointing the paw at my dog so funny she stopped about 200mm from my dog and just sat there with the one paw still up dam I laughed my head off.
I doubt you have a REAL Bombay. They're very rare & very distinct in appearance! They have a very round head, BIG round eyes & a flat compressed face (though not as flattened as a Persian Cat). They're bodies are very dense, somewhat compact, heavy for their size & muscular. Bombays & Burmese are said to be *"Bricks wrapped in Silk"* They're physical features are very similar to a Burmese though. Most of the pictures you see on the internet of "Black Cats" labeled as a Bombay are actually Black Domestic Shorthair Cats.

I had a bombay that would look at a housefly buzzing around for a minute or two. Then she'd leap up, and smack the thing right out of the air and eat it. Pretty damn impressive.

loved my bombay cat, he was a wild one and loved to be super goofy and play! he would also meow "hewwo?" at 3 am and wake everybody up.. probably the cutest thing ever. coolest cat ever
I love my Bombay. I adopted Tacoma ( and yes he has 4WD😉) from the animal shelter five year's ago because he was such a playful little wild man 😁. He is my constant partner when I'm operating my model railroad and He definitely thinks he's a dog to the point that he will actually uses a piddle pad as well as the litter box. He's grown up to be a really big boy and weights 17 lbs, all muscle. Heck even our three small dogs ( a Jack Russell, Italian greyhound, Apple head Chihuahua) recognize Tacoma as the Alpha dog! Of course we also have two other cats and they see him as the the alpha male but Tacoma is such good boy and brings me so much happiness, he will always be my happy little wild man ❤️.
There are 2 kinds of Bombay cats: American Bombay (big round copper-coloured eyes, round head, short muzzle) and British Bombay (like the cat in the video). Both have a panther-like swagger, and are completely black, including nose, lips, whiskers, and paw pads.
My cat seems to be a British Bombay, but we can't be sure, because he was a stray who decided to move in.
Our story is exactly like yours! We adopted our cat thinking he was just an American short hair, and then realizde that he also has every characteristic of a Bombay, from his appearance and silky sleek, jet black coat, long, lean and muscular body, to every bit of his personality! He's extemely social, vocal, affectinate, very dog-like, including goes for walks on a leash, very demanding of attention, tolerates little kids well, and other dogs well. Did not realize that this is a rare breed. Best cat in the world to have for a pet!

It's a Black Domestic Shorthair. *It's a very beautiful one @ that though.* Bombay's are extremely rare & look quite different in facial features to this animal. Your cat is soooo gorgeous!!! I had a black cat named Ebony who passed on a couple of years ago. We were very attached and I miss her every day. Anyways, i've been doing some research on these beauties and would love to have one of my own, when the time is right. They are not only stunning to look at but they seem like they'd be really good pets.

Renae Winchester From what Ive read, a purebred Bombay can’t have a single spot of white on it. They have to be entirely black.
Our Bombay (well we don't know for sure but he checks every single box in appearance and behaviour) adopted us too. He showed up in our garden, starving, when he was a big kitten. He's been with us ever since and he's the most easy cat we have. Have to keep him separate from the others though. He's too dominant.
My little Lucy (Nickname for male Bombay named Lucifer) will actually come to me when I call him by nickname. I just say Lucy, Lucy, Lucy really fast and he will come to me no matter where he is

We have a Bombay as well except when we found her , her eye was extremely infected and had to be removed. She's happy and healthy now living with us :)
My Victory is a Rescue and also a Bombay. We walk him alot an he seems to like it. He is in LOVE with my boyfriend, too. He's a Daddy's boy for sure.. He also has all of the traits your cat has.

Do you have guys have PEDIGREES for your "Bombays"? If not then you have black domestic shorthairs not Bombay.
To Ferretocious: It's not always true (e.g., my Bombay was disqualified because of an inborn defect of the right shoulder - he walks in a funny way). What PEDIGREE may he need? Then, it's allowed to cross Bombay with American Black Shorthair once in a while but the kittens of such crosses often deviate from Bombay's phenotype, usually, because of greenish eyes and more stocky&shorter body, and end up in a shelter without any pedigree records. Otherwise you are right, most probably.
To Justin C.: No surprise that non-cat people love your cat. Bombay cat is not a cat - it's a dog. At some point our Bombay's noticed that people shake hands and he started also giving his front paw to our guests, joining the company. It's hilarious. And he greets everybody who comes in. A kind of "give me five".

My Bombay cat named Socrates is a black tuxedo cat with white paws in the front, white feet in the back, white fur on his chest and has white whiskers. He weights 16 pounds and he's about 13 years old.

We had a Cat we thought to be stray collarless & a nasty wound/ bite on his head.
After 6wks I decided he needed to be seen by the vet.
Took him he was close to no return, we kept him & treated his wound per
docs instruction.
The one day we found the people down the road owned him.

If it looks like this cat it's not a Bombay. This is a "Black Domestic Shorthair." *Beautiful cat though!* Bombays are very rare & very distinct in their physical appearance. Apart from the black color Bombay's resemble a Burmese in physical appearance.

Everyone here thinks they have a Bombay because of all the mislabeled pictures of "Black Catz" claiming they're Bombayz on the internet. Bombayz are rare & not cheap!
I have two Bombay/Blue grey persian mix kittens. They look like a Bombay except a patch of Blue grey fur over their necks. They are my life!
I adopted a stray Bombay Cat named Shadow :). It's currently nine months old. It's the same size as yours. Do they grow bigger or will they always stay that small.
They can get bigger, my American Bombay, Tacoma is big cat not fat and weights in at 17lbs of muscle which is why his nickname is the "Bowling Ball" and you really don't want him to run into you because it hurts when he does! He's all muscle! Bombay's are an awesome breed and are very much like a dog and generally American Bombay's are considered to be large cat and are bigger than the European Bombay.

Bombays don't have any white on them & they're extremely rare. The cat pictured in the video is a good quality Domestic Shorthair. Apart from the color Bombay's physically look quite different in appearance than the cat in the video.

I have a "Pet Quality" Bombay ( from the breeder in Fairfax, Va. ) and he was $700-800 as a kitten ( They are sold as older kittens and always altered ). "Show Quality" kittens are easily $4.500,00 and no Bombay should be allowed outside, ever….

I had mine not long ago. he was old so hes gone now.. just last week. but He would sit by my door and howl for hours for me to feed him. (sometimes you just need to sleep you know..? I never forgot to feed him ever though) always at 7am.
and 7pm. and you think "oh he'll go away eventually.. and give me an hour alone." nope. he could go for like 2 hours just meowing. I had to leave him outside my room to sleep because he had to be all in my face all the time. xD he was attached to the hip. Cant sit anywhere without him running over. He was smart too.. like he'd try to turn doorknobs and knock over his water bowl to get me to notice him because he knew it made me annoyed.. lol. But he was the best cat ever :> But they are super needy.. I miss my needy cat. Im amazed how I found so much time to be with him. RIP my buddy..

I live in Louisville where the Bombay originated and a lot of black cats in our area are actually Bombay cats or mixed with Bombay. I have a black cat and she's noticeably different in appearance to any domestic shorthair I've ever had. She has a smaller, more petite body size with slender limbs and dainty paws, her coat is silky and shiny with a tinge of reddish brown in the sunlight, her face is petite, her eyes are sea green. But more than that, she doesn't act like a typical domestic shorthair at all. She is the most affectionate, playful, curious, vocal, observant, needy cat I've ever known. She has the most happy, adorable, funny personality. She's very particular in her likes and dislikes and will let you know exactly how she feels. I never thought of her as being anything but a regular old black cat until someone mentioned to me that she might be Bombay. But regardless of what her genetic makeup is, she's such a unique cat and I love her to pieces.
You might actually have a Bombay because you live in Louisville Kentucky where Nikki Horner the originator of the breed was from. Your description is somewhat close imo to what they look in appearance. The Green eyes are a disqualifier for American registration & showing. Green eyes on the other hand are accepted for registration & in British show rings. I love black cats, I knew one for many years, she was a friends. She was quite psychic and very intelligent, awesome cat.
Our Bombay Christopher 'Kit' Marlowe loves chasing his tail in the bath and is fascinated by water going down the drain, he also likes getting inside shopping bags and crawling under rugs in search of insects. In winter he likes to wash his hands and feet in a bit of warm water in the bath after he's been outside. He's a great cat and he hasn't killed a bird in a over year after we gave him a good telling off, he was almost like a naughty dog in his demeanour and knew he'd done something wrong. So the Bombay is very smart, friendly and a delight to live with.
I have the same problem with my cat. Ibuy him this beautiful cat bed and he sleeps in the sink. It's murder when I need to shave!

I'm very sorry to hear it. I understand. I know how horrible it'd be for me to loose my Bombay, he's 16 already. But, unfortunately, we all aren't forever. Be I working on feline selection, I'd have chosen to select them for longevity rather than for a quality of fur or any other trait. It's actually possible with a help of genetic engineering. I hope sooner or later we'll able to make our cats live longer lives. But now...How old was your cat? What was his name? What's happened to him? It takes time to get over it, you know.. My compassion..
Elena Lymar his name was Maddox but I nick named him Burgers because he loved to eat. Burgers was found outside when he was a kitten so he was a bit feral but he love me and would follow me everywhere. He absolutely needed to go outside to be a cat. He lived to be an outdoor cat. He loved hunting, he would wake me up every morning and I would let him outside and by evening he would come back in, eat and sleep in my arms or under the bed. A few days ago he was hit by a car. He was able to make it home but I did not discover him until he had already passed away. I found him under the deck. I am about heartbroken. Burgers was only around 4 years old. He acted more like a dog then a cat. I loved him so much and miss him terribly. Thanks for asking. Here are some pictures of Burgers.

My bombay Aku loves laying in the sink when my brother is brushing his teeth.
+Green Machine My bombay is completely obsessed with running water...the sink, the toilet, the shower. It's strange.
Here in Puerto Rico in my street, came a stray bombay cat. He was lost, maybe his owner died or his ownwers moved and abandoned him. After about 5 year more he became sick from the urinary tract. He could not urinate and only a few drops came and he tried to urinate every 5 minutes or so. I went with him to the vet and spend a lot of money because if he was not intervened he would die in a couple of days. I saved his life by investing about 3K$. If you have a cat with this disease, which is common you can avoid what happened to my Bobito, a black bombay, a nice and friendly cat by giving him a diet that the vet recommends, also, there are some products that with herbs you can avoid your cat to die from the disease that is killing many black cats. I could not have a friendly conscience if I could not save his life if I did not invest my money in him. You love them as if they are children.
It's doubtful it's a REAL Bombay Cat. Very few people who own the REAL thing are going to lose them because they're rare & expensive. Most "Black Cats" labeled as Bombays on the internet are not. They're Black Domestic Shorthairs (Black House Cats). The beautiful "Black Cat" in this video is a BDS Cat.

Always wondered what Bombays think of those high-tech cat toys you're always seeing for sale on T.V.. B/c they are so intelligent, I wonder if they quickly figure out that, e.g., "Floppity Fish", is NOT a real fish, and lose interest. ?
