    Hello and welcome to this weird crevasse of the internet where we get really excited about music (particularly Taylor Swift) and break down our favourite albums and songs. Our names are Bonny and Emily, and our aim with these videos is to share our love for music and also share context and understanding around the songs, by highlighting breaking down the lyrics, melodies and production. We are so happy to have created this little community that is just as unhinged as us when it comes to music 🤪

      Yes! They are the first videos I look for in the next days and weeks after Taylor releases new albums. I do my own listens on repeat and once I'm ready to hear the Swifties takes on the new albums I check for Emily and Benny's videos first. I've watched a few other Swifties videos but I find that I have a lot of the same feelings as they do (but not always which is wonderful the differences help me sometimes fathom what I may be missing). I also love to watch Ally Sheehan another Aussie to who I have similar tastes. The Aussies I love and I'm American! Thanks, ladies for the amazing videos! ❤

    Peter has one of Taylor's most impressive one liners with "Love's never lost when perspective is earned". That is right up there with "Kept you like a secret, but you kept me like a oath" and "so casually cruel in the name of being honest" from All Too Well.

    The Manuscript I saw as a reflection on the whole re-recording process, and how through this process she is revisiting these past moments in her life. And how her putting her emotions from her lowest lows into a song has resonated with her fans and given her the legacy she has. So now she doesn’t feel the hurt she felt when she wrote her songs, she has reached her peace. The songs are for the fans now, and the stories aren’t hers they are ours.

      Clara Bow is relatable to anyone who is aging. I’m 71 and I’m sure I cried the first 10 times I listened to it. I cried for Taylor because she sees what’s coming for her, and I cried for myself because you can’t grow older without suffering many kinds of losses. The song says we will all be eclipsed and the gifts we’ve cultivated over the years will fade. I agree this is a song that is deeply personal and will not resonate with the masses, but I thought I would explain here why I love it so much.

    I find it really fascinating that The Alchemy has the right beat for CPR, especially given all of the references to stopping CPR in so long, London and the heart stopping in You’re Losing Me. Like Joe killed her, but then Travis revived her.

  • @meg11914
    @meg11914 24 дні тому +181

    I don't think people realise that the following is another meaning of the word alchemy. Which I think is so perfect for the song - "a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination.
    "finding the person who's right for you requires a very subtle alchemy" " ❤

    • @badgerclaws
      @badgerclaws 24 дні тому +35

      Yes!! I was just thinking I don't think their interpretation of the word alchemy is even correct. They seem to be of the belief of it creating "false" gold, but alchemy in history was moreso about trying to turn base metals INTO gold... As in taking something that is fairly basic and looks to be easily found and then turning it into something valuable and treasured. I never once got a negative connotation about alchemy even reading the song title from the start.
      I think they might be misinterpreting it because they're misinterpreting what alchemy means in the first place.

    • @woodelf27
      @woodelf27 24 дні тому +10

      @badgerclaws I absolutely agree with you! Alchemy involves turning base metals like lead into precious metals such as gold. Since this song comes after the low point of loml and Smallest Man, I think it’s about taking her leaden feelings (depression and anger) and letting them turn into the golden feeling of love.

    • @breathmusic1312
      @breathmusic1312 24 дні тому +30

      I did my own research about "the alchemy" in a love context and it made me love the song so much more. What stood out for me was this: Integration of Opposites (this is so Taylor and Travis): A central concept in alchemy is the reconciliation of opposites, often symbolized by the union of masculine and feminine energies. In relationships, this can represent the coming together of two individuals with different backgrounds, personalities, and perspectives, creating a harmonious and balanced partnership.

    • @Momof3boysinLA

      Agree! Alchemy = Chemistry like no other. She’s basically telling us that this bone deep, chemical connection between them is so rare and so special that it only happens “once every few lifetimes.” All the child’s play with the amateurs doesn’t even matter anymore because this is the one - the thing she’s been waiting for. She’s telling us she’s found her soul mate. And yes, it’s a very sexy, sultry song!

    I absolutely love Robin and it makes me cry every time I listen to it. I connect to it more when I think of Taylor looking at Robin and being reminded of when she was a child and the innocence of youth and how adults protect children from the dangers and evils of the world. But she notes in the bridge that at some point they must go out and face things themselves. And I imagine Taylor looking at the hurt she has been through during her lifetime and remembering that there was also a time when she was innocent and protected. There's something nostalgic and accepting about the song and its connection with the cycle of life.
    I can't even fully express what I mean, but I do see this song as much more than just observing a child and it being very much connected to Taylor's reminiscing on her life and her youth and her struggles and how everything has brought her to where she is now.

      SAME!!! I cried the first ten times I heard Robin, and it always touches some deep-down longing in me for my own childhood. I think she is singing this song to her inner child and that thought KILLS ME. I just posted a similar comment and then saw your very eloquent description. You hit the nail on the head, and once more people fathom this interpretation, I think it will grow in popularity. So dismayed to see it at the bottom of many people’s ranking. I hear them say “it’s a kids’ song”, but that is far from all it is.

    I Hate It Here and The Prophecy were the songs that personally hit me the hardest. When I was 13/14 I was being bullied in school. I was so depressed and I hated having to go to school and I read HP over and over and over to take me out of that feeling. I completely felt every part of that song. And The Prophecy took me back to late teens/early 20s. I was the only one out of my friends without a boyfriend and I felt like no one wanted me. I was the girl that the guy dated for a few weeks/months got ghosted and they immediately had a girlfriend after me. I thought there was something wrong with me and I'd never have what every one else does. I've been with my husband for 10 years now, but it took me right back to that time when I thought so little of myself. I wish I could go back and tell myself it was all going to be okay x

    My take on the manuscript is that it's a look through her past relationships that have affected her the most, on one sense or another, working through her feelings about them during and after them, and coming to terms with everything that might have happened. It's her healing journey, of accepting it as part of her life and experience and growth as a person and an artist. Particularly the line "The Professor said to write what you know lookin' backwards might be the only way to move forward" brings me back to Dear John and Would've Could've Should've, because she did revisit that relationship years later and expressed how it really made her feel, how she feels about it now. And having released not only that, but also the rest of TTPD and Midnights, which together do provide a a journey through most of said relationships, she is finished with that part of her life, she's finished that manuscript, she's ready to move on from that. It's a full stop to that era, and it's not her story anymore because she's done telling it, and furthermore, it's literally not her story, because she's not living in it anymore, she's not letting that past define who she is now. (Is it obvious I'm passionate about this song?)

      @suryapontanugraha9000 totally! And the shift to first person in the outro of the song is so powerful. Also, "you" could mean any of her past relationships (romantic or not, because it can also refer to the rerecordings and owning the original masters, "the last souvenir" being the original versions, not being hers anymore, but she has the new versions) and the line can be read as longing/nostalgic and also as relief that this is the only thing left between them, depending on who she's talking to.

      I already shared this with @chatsand reacts on their patron, but I wanted to share it with you guy here. Here's my take on the manuscript, which is I think she's looking back at her whole career and past relationships.
      The piano hits 11 chords before the singing starts for the 11 original albums.
      As the song starts she says:
      "Now and then she rereads the manuscript
      Of the entire torrid affair" --“Entire” being key here.
      "They compared their licenses -- Taylor got her doctorate from NYU, so she is a doctor now (and she knows how breathing works.) That must have been a massive achievement for her and her family were probably so proud.
      He said, 'I'm not a donor but
      I'd give you my heart if you needed it'" -- Taylor Lautner and his wife, Taylor, have a podcast dedicated to healing and mental health.
      "She rolled her eyes and said” -- An action of a child or teenager
      'You're a professional'
      He said, 'No, just a good samaritan'" -- Maybe to Scott B, because he signed her on, when she was a young girl, like he was helping her get her career started.
      "He said that if the sex was half as good as the conversation was
      Soon they'd be pushin' strollers
      But soon it was over" -- These lines seem to be about Matty Healy. She put several lyrics in TTPD about Matty talking to her about rings, marriage and babies, but the relationship was over almost as soon as it started.
      "In the age of him, she wished she was thirty
      And made coffee every morning in a Frеnch press
      Afterwards she only atе kids' cereal
      And couldn't sleep unless it was in her mother's bed" -- These line seem to be about Jake Gyllenhaal. In ATW, he tells her "if we had been closer in age, maybe it would've been fine" and later "...sippin' coffee like you're on a late night show." and in the short film, Sadie laying in bed, crying her eyes out. **Or the coffee line could be about Harry Styles, from the 300 take out coffees later line from Is It Over now? but then I don't know what to do with the cereal and mom's bed lines, unless its referencing her break down following the Kim and Kanye thing and disappearing for a year.
      "Then she dated boys who were her own age
      With dart boards on the backs of their doors" -- She did date a few boys her age, Joe Jonas, Lucas Till, Harry Styles. I don't know what age they/she was when they were dating, but it was much closer to her age than John or Jake.
      "She thought about how he said since she was so wise beyond her years
      Everything had been above board
      She wasn't sure" -- These lines are giving me John Mayer. From Dear John to Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve, she knows there was something wrong about that relationship and it was not ok.
      "And the years passed like scenes of a show" -- 6 years with Joe Alwyn, an actor
      "The professor said to write what you know" -- Taylor has always written songs about her life and experiences. With her doctorate she could teach at a collage level and so SHE is the professor.
      "Lookin' backwards might be the only way to move forward" -- These lines may be the re-records and the whole thing with Big Machine Records
      "Then the actors were hitting their marks" -- Making ATW the Short Film plus the other directing projects she's done, or maybe even being in Cats the movie and other films.
      "And the slow dance was alight with the sparks" -- the ERAS tour, or maybe all the tours she's done in the past
      "And the tears fell in synchronicity with the score" -- Could still be the ERAS Tour, specifically when you add in "I can do it with a broken heart" But it could also be loosely nodding to Travis with the mention of "Score"
      “And at last, she knew what the agony had been for” -- Looking forward with hopefulness with all the bad stuff behind her, and the resolution of the re-records and Travis as positives.
      "The only thing that's left is the manuscript
      One last souvenir from my trip to your shores " -- Could be specifically be Joe and Matty, being from England, or it could be collectively all of these past relationships if you take the "shores" less literally to mean into their lives/homes. Shores could also mean the Tour stops domestic and international
      "Now and then I reread the manuscript" -- Of course she'll always remember the pain of her past, and never stop looking back at it.
      But the story isn't mine anymore." -- This seems to refer to her telling the fans how she’s always given us her most painful songs. And we'll take them in and give them back to her as something beautiful.
      What do you think?

    For me, the black dog is like the moment of spiraling and realizing it’s over just by seeing one small thing. Like you’re checking his social media (old habits) and see he liked a girls picture or checking his location and seeing he’s at a bar and you just come undone. You start picturing them without you and you picture all the time you spent together and you’re just losing it, getting more hurt and more angry. The old habits die screaming makes me thing that her doing something as simple as checking in on him like she always does hurt her in ways she couldn’t imagine but she kept doing it. Like it took true emotional pain to get her to let go of it.
    Hope it helps you fathom! We all have different opinions ofc but this is truely one of the best songs she has ever written. The production and the lyrics melt together in the most relatable borderline psychotic girly breakdown.

    Interpreting "The Alchemy" as a song written for her fans during the Eras Tour has changed it for me - I wanted to share it so it might change it for you as well!
    The line "This happens once every few lifetimes" already suggests it's not a love song because in this album alone, there are three men she's written songs about, but The Eras Tour and all the vibe that came with it happen once every few lifetimes. She hasn't come around in so long, but she came back so strong! She always performs at stadiums, which in most cases are football stadiums. When she touches down in a city, the city's team leaves the stadium, and she takes it over; she's the one to beat. Some joke that it's heroin, but this time with an "E" because she's the most powerful when she's on the stage. These blokes (the football team that was playing before the concert) warm the benches, we (as in Taylor Swift and her fans) been on a winning streak!
    Also, the placement of this song in the album makes more sense when it's about the Eras Tour:
    "I Can Do It with a Broken Heart" - About her heart being broken but still performing on stage, it's about her career
    "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" - In terms of where it sits in the album, it doesn't matter if it's about Matty Healy or Scott Borchetta; it makes sense in both ways.
    "The Alchemy" - About the Eras Tour
    "Clara Bow" - Her career and the music industry.
    So the last 4 songs in the first album is about her career and relationship with fans.

      Came here to say this as well!
      "Sign on your heart" => signs in the crowd. "You" is the fans, "he" is separate and actually just there as the prize. (She does a distinct difference between He and You in Fresh Out the Slammer as well, so there's precident). SHE is the greatest in the league (where's the trophy? HE is walking over now)

    • @im_azraelle
      @im_azraelle 24 дні тому +19

      i like this interpretation but i think it’s definitely intended to be about Travis and her making a “comeback” to being herself again and being ready for another relationship. alchemy can be another word for chemistry so saying “who are we to fight the chemistry?” when talking about the beginning of the relationship makes sense. “these blokes warmed the benches” could be in reference to her latest exes, since ‘bloke’ is British slang and they were all British. they helped give her life and relationship experience to prepare her for “the one”, so the metaphorical bench is warm for Travis to sit comfortably. “when i touch down, call the amateurs and cut ‘em from the team” probably means that when she touches down in her plane to see Travis, he can write off any other potential partners, because as Taylor says, she’s the one to beat. “cause the sign on your heart says it’s still reserved for me”, probably in reference to how we knew Travis was interested for a while before they met, and Taylor was probably hesitant because of her last two relationships so she held off meeting him for a bit, or maybe even outright rejected him at first. but he was still waiting for her. “where’s the trophy? he just comes running over to me” is the biggest clue that this is about Travis lol, definitely in reference to her going down onto the field at the ends of his football games.
      this is a really cute interpretation though!! i just think Taylor wouldn’t make a fan song so vague(?), and it would be a lot more in our faces like Long Live lol 😅

The one with the kids cereal and things being above board bc she was mature for sure brought john mayer to mind and the ending bit with the tears falling to the score and the actors certainly feels like a nod to all too well. But i think of it more as her looking back at previous relationships in her life and releasing the pain of them to us for us to consume if that makes sense. Healing through feeling the pain and expressing it.

    Everytime a new taylor album releases my brain cannot fathom the fact that i can get my new favorite songs of all time because i’m like “folklore and evermore exist. speak now exists. like they have some of my favorite songs ever, how could she ever top that?” and then she hits me with peter, the prophecy, how did it end, i can fix him and fresh out the slammer and im DEAD! i cannot even talk about how much i love peter, i’m still processing 😭 and also on my first listen i put a mark on every single song, that never happened before i was crying
    also, i completely agree with the expectations put on the songs can damage the experience, i think i loved the second part sooo much more because i didn’t have time to even try to guess what most songs were about

    So watching The Eras Tour in Paris, I connected “he can be my jailer- Burton to this Taylor” to Fresh out The Slammer- but she didn’t sing it. But the continuation of the jail theme 🤍

You're videos are so fun and I'm glad that there's a community like this! 💙💜 I now have some new favourites to keep listening too

    Can we acknowledge the magic of Taylor's music in how each of us has our deep bonds to particular songs that we can't endure others not feeling it? We respect peoples right to their own opinions, but she is such a talented writer that for all the myriad of planets on which we dwell, she has an iconic song for that planet. Songwriter!

    Girls, The Manuscript's chords at the beginning are straight from All Too Well. Try singing ATW to it where the word "walked" in "I walked through the door with you" hits on the very first chord. The 2nd chord will play between that line and "the air was cold." It's the same tempo.

    Guys! When you think and search for alchemy in a love context, you realize why Taylor chose that word, in many ways, it describes them perfectly. I'll leave here what stood out for me (but there's more):
    1- Transformation: Love has the power to change us, just like alchemists aimed to transform base metals into gold. Being with someone you love can refine you, challenge you to grow, and bring out the best in you. (This reminded me for some reason people saying Travis plays better when Taylor is there and how his coach said he's a better and happier man now that Taylor's in his life)
    2 Unity of Opposites (This one fits them the best): Alchemy often talks about the reconciliation of opposites, like the union of masculine and feminine energies. In love, this concept can be seen in the merging of two individuals with their own unique traits, backgrounds, and perspectives. The alchemical process of integrating opposites mirrors the journey of two people coming together in a relationship, learning to embrace and harmonize their differences (this is exactly what Taylor is doing, embracing their differences, especially with the line "You know how to ball, I know Aristotles" in "So High School". An interesting contrast to her exes who were more similar to her.)
    3- Inner Work: Alchemy wasn't just about creating gold; it was also about the alchemist themself. Likewise, true love often involves self-reflection and growth. As we love another, we learn more about ourselves and what makes a healthy relationship (this makes me think a lot about this album, Taylor has done a lot of inner work with this album, especially with The Anthology which may have allowed her to heal and align herself on the path to building a healthier relationship. )

      I agree. The idea of alchemy (a false or hopeless search for gold) and an old love coming back fits much more with the Matty narrative but then why the heavy handed football lyrics? It’s weird to have both within one song bc they seem contradictory. However I still turn it up bc melodically it’s a bop.
