What we did was to cover the entire area with a thick carpet of hay. We got damp hay and used hay for free. This starts off the composting process bringing in the beneficial microflora. Replenish the hay a few times in the coming month. At the end you will have a layer of fantastic compost on the 'dead' land.
My question is why you don't immediately have a green covering of some or various sorts to build soil, retain moisture and repel heat? I would have done that even before planting any trees. Get those seeds spread. Even clover would be great.
I have tried! Nothing we have thrown around in the un-tilled ground has grown :( not to any great success anyway. Lupins, peas, clover, buckwheat and oats have all been scattered around.
@@FantailValleyHomestead I wonder if you could grow daffodils around your trees as a living mulch they are good because they die back in summer so don't compete with trees for water

What a great idea
Man thats some rough ground you guys are working with!
It sure is!
Brilliant, it never occurred to me to use wool. Mulch is really hard to come by here, but I happen to have a lot of sheep-wool lying around. Thanks!
Oh it's a great mulch! I have heard that possums don't like touching it too which is a bonus (if true).

There are chicory and clover plants in the video. Maybe because of the high clay content plants aren't growing everywhere.
