    No, please watch all parts of it. Part 2 is just what all US americans expect when it comes to Germany. But the other ones show, as you guessed, the other parts of Germany, which are totally different to the south. So you can get a very good impression of whole Germany by watching all of them and not just the stereotypes.
    Greetings from Berlin 😎

    Don't worry, it makes no big difference in which order you watch the four parts.

    Semmelknödel aren't potato dumplings. They are made of Semmeln, as the name says, which is the bavarian word for a bread roll. But you can also get potato dumplings. We have some different kinds of dumplings over here 😋

    4:30 My father's first wife (only met her once, I think) wore a Dirndl when I met her. But that's the only person I know. We also had a teacher (in the West, not the South) who basically looked like some southern farmer stereotype. Couldn't even tell you what stereotype. You just look at that and think yup, that's some German from the 1800s.
    Dude was a history teacher and used to joke about things (that we were taught) happening back when he was young. Also called another 60+ y/o teacher his son all the time, you could almost believe it ^^

    Semmelknödel is a bread dumpling, not a potato dumpling as the subtitle translation implies

  • @meisterin_eder
    @meisterin_eder 2 місяці тому +20

    Semmelknödel are bread dumplings not potato dumplings (as shown in the vid), both of them go very well with Schweinsbraten.
    And about the boiled sausage, it's tasty even it doesn't look like it at first glance. Popular breakfast (option), you usually eat it with sweet mustard and Breze and enjoy a Weißbier with it.
    And about not having Weißwurst after midday: “The Weißwurst is not allowed to hear the 12 o’clock chime.” This rule comes from the fact that the Bavarian specialty previously could not be stored refrigerated and therefore had to be consumed as quickly as possible. Today, of course, there are refrigerators and the pubs also offer white sausages in the evenings. Very traditional pubs stick to the 12 o'clock rule.

      Semmelknödel müssten eigentlich Semmelnknödel heißen.
      Weil für ein Knödel braucht es mehrere Semmeln. 🧐

    About the cleanliness. You should come here on New Year's eve. At night all streets are just a mess because of thousands of fireworks, but the cleaning, private and professional, starts early in the morning and at midday you'll see almost nothing anymore. That's impressive, even for me as a german who is used to it since over 40 years now 😉

    Semmel = Bun.
    Semmelknödel = Bundumplings, no potato has ever seen a Bundumpling.

    Many, if not most, German cities have large areas for pedestrians only in their centers, it adds a lot to the tranquility, people can walk without having to pay attention to traffic, sit on benches or outside cafés... It's much more pleasant than having cars everywhere. People who don't live far away often use public transportation to come to the cities, because it's rather expensive to park your car for hours.

    Hello D Here's the Cooking recipe for potato dumplings:
    1 ½ kg potato(s)
    170g flour
    2 egg(s)
    Salt
    Working time approx. 50 minutes

    Total time approx. 50 minutes
    Peel and wash the potatoes. Set aside half of it in a bowl covered with water. Cook the remaining ones in a pot covered with salted water for 20 minutes. Then drain the water. Steam out the potatoes and let them cool.
    Grate the raw potatoes onto a kitchen towel and squeeze them out. Place in a bowl and grate the cooked potatoes on top. Remove some of the flour to turn and place on a plate. Mix the remaining flour into the potato mixture and stir in the eggs. Salt as needed.
    Bring 2.5 liters of lightly salted water to the boil in a pot. Using floured hands, shape the potato mixture into dumplings, each 5 cm in diameter, and coat them in the flour you have removed. Let it steep in gently simmering water for about 20 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and allow to drain. Serve immediately as a side dish.
    My mother adds a few small cubes of toast tossed in butter, which she roasts in the pan, into the dough before she puts the dumplings in the water. about 2-3 cubes per dumpling.
    Absolutely delicious.
    With love from Germany❤🤘🏻

    Hi, D.! Once I heard, you can send an (old school 🤪)- postcard to "the very big white castle in bavaria" and it will arrive!!! I hope this is still working nowadays! 😆
    Wait! Bavaria (and Baden-Württemberg) are just the most famous regions. "Germany" as a whole is different. Traffic? -Yes! Tourists/ or crowded streets and pedestrian streets? -Yes! Ugly post-war houses? -Yes! It`s like Detroit on the one hand and San Francisco on the other hand for example. But all in all it`s great. Beautiful or cool or with an own charme.
    The North sea and the baltic sea regions are beautiful and different.
    I love your reactions!...🥨🍺

    At least in Upperbavaria a tradional outfit would also be appropriate to put on for a wedding or a christening.
    Authentic tradional cloth can be extremly expressive (up to 2000 Euros). They come with rich emboidery and special jewelery. The design always points to a region or a village.

    @MichaEl-rh1kv 2 місяці тому +2

    2:42 Flädlesupp (pancake soup) at the left, Kaiserschmarrn (Emperor's mess) at the right.
    4:07 Tracht = traditional clothing were in former times mainly Sunday clothes. To make them more or less uniform for the whole village helped to cut costs (joint purchase of material, and the village taylor could use the same dressmaking pattern) and allowed also for passing on the clothes from (great)grandma to (great)granddaughter (or granddad to grandson). The women clothes were also designed to be worn in every condition of life with only small adjustments - by teenage girls, by married women, including when pregnant, and by the grandmother. The Lederhosen however were a more recent addition: In the first half of the 19th century mostly loden cloth was used, but in 1883 a teacher from Bayrischzell and his drinking mates started the first Trachtenverein (the association for preservation of folk's traditional clothing in the Leizach valley), and they invented a Tracht which included new-made leather trousers. (Before that they were only worn by forestry workers and aristocratic hunters like the Bavarian king.) The village people had at first a good laugh, but then the king heard of it and thought it to be a good contribution to his efforts to create a Bavarian national sentiment and a Bavarian national clothing, so he started to support such associations. The Dirndl on the other hand is loosely based on traditional clothings in rural regions of Bavaria, but was actually re-created as a fashion item of the Munich upper class back in the 19th century, worn at the "Sommerfrische", the summer holiday at some popular rural villages. The name "Dirndl" refers to the maids employed by the upper class, who often came from the countryside and wore their best traditional Sunday dress while applying (and sometimes also while serving), but the fashion Dirndls were more colorful, had lower necklines and some other changes.
    8:18 The translation "potato dumplings" is wrong here. "Semmel" is Bavarian for a bread roll, and that is what this dumplings are made of: Stale bread rolls diced and then soaked in hot milk, added some eggs, salt, herbs and spices to make the dough, then boiled in salted water. (Breznknödel use last day's Brezeln = pretzels instead.)
    8:50 The original Munich Weißwurst is made from uncured veal, ham and herbs, and because there is not pickling salt in them, they turn white during (pre-)boiling. In the days before refrigeration that meant that sausages made in the early morning of a hot summer day should be eaten before midday, so there were not allowed "to hear the midday bells". They are a traditional staple for the second breakfast around 10 am as well as for the Sunday Frühschoppen (morning pint) in Lower and Upper Bavaria (and nowadays also some neighboring regions).
    12:45 The Heidelberg palace was destroyed twice by French troops during the Nine Years' war (which was started by Louis XIV about the succession of the Palatinate and became kind of an early World War - France against the Holy Roman Empire, the Dutch Republic, the UK, the Spanish Empire and the Savoyard state, fought also in the colonies). Heidelberg was until then the capital of the Palatinate of the Rhine, but the Counts Palatine then moved to a new residence in Mannheim. They started to restore the palace, but in 1764 a lightning strike caused a fire which destroyed some of the newly restored buildings again, and the restoration was stopped.
    14:11 In German the Black Forest gateau is called Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte - Torte also being a loanword (from Italian "torta" via the French "tarte"). The full name would translate to cherry gateau á la Black Forest. (The Black Forest part mostly refers to the traditional Black Forest cherry brandy, in which the cherries in the reddish part of the gateau are soaked, but also to the black cocoa sponge cake.)

    Let me introduce you to a Bavarian food that is unterrated: Schupfnudel.
    Like Italian gnocchi (a side dish) they are made from potatoe. Yet they are not cooked but deep fried in Bavaria: a crunchy outside and a soft inside.
    They go well with gravey loaded meals. Served with sauerkraut and a decent amount of fried bacon bits (Speckwürfel is what mean) they are ... heaven, heaven

    First two meals look to be left: Flädelessupp.. strips of German pancake in a soup and right: Kaiserschmarrn: Roughed up thick pancake with crusty edges and powdered sugar. Think the latter is more Austrian?
    @Traditional clothing: kinda like how people in the south stil wear cowboy hats and boots.
    Also it used to be that these clothing were passed down from parent to child.
    The history of Bavaria vs the rest ist even more complicated as way back when, Bavaria was basically just farm land and depended heavily on the states that, through mining and industry, had money. They had no problems taking the money and building up their economy, but when the mines were closed and the transfers needed to happen in the other direction, Bavaria grew stingy and still does not want to contribute.
    Raised in Frankonia, live in Baden and even if the difference is a mere 160km, it is *completely* different. I still have problems understanding the people here.
    Plus Baden is right next to the Elsac region and its Flammkuchen. Another staple German food and if you liked Freiburg.. check out Colmar.
