Women’s economic empowerment is central to achieving gender equality. Helping women have access to decent work and improve their livelihoods is key to advancing women’s rights and reducing poverty. There is no country in the world where women have achieved economic equality with men. Women are less likely to participate in the labor market than men; they are paid less than men; and they are less likely to be entrepreneurs and face more disadvantages starting businesses. - Yet the benefits from women having increased economic empowerment are significant! Investing in women has a ripple effect, benefitting the individual women, but also their families, communities and countries. With increased resources, women spend more on food, better health, and school for their children, which benefits future generations. And the benefit globally? It has been estimated that trillions of dollars would be added to the global economy if women had the same job opportunities as men. The fact is that when more women work, economies grow!
Kula Project eradicates poverty through the development of entrepreneurs in Rwanda’s coffee communities. This funding supports Kula Project’s work to develop entrepreneurs in Rwanda’s coffee communities. This will empower women to earn increased income, diversify their revenue streams, and improve the gender equity and decision-making capacity within their homes and communities, leading them out of extreme poverty and into brighter, more sustainable futures.

Upaya Social Ventures provides investment and support to early-stage companies creating dignified jobs for people in extreme poverty. Upaya is building an evidence base and capacity to tackle the gender wage gap among jobs created for people living in extreme poverty. Upaya will gather valuable insights on the gendered experience of jobholders in its portfolio, measure the disproportionate impact of extreme poverty on women, and define effective methods to overcome the widening gender wage gap in rural India. Findings from the analysis will be used to help entrepreneurs design sustainable jobs for women and increase their access to equal and just pay.
