you made this 100 times creepier than it should be
Personally I think this is one of the best scenes in this anime, it show that after thousands of years being called a freak and scolded at by pretty much everyone, he could not develop emotions such as empathy or jealousy cause he never got that close too someone. These emotions of jealousy are all new to him. Just think of being that old and getting yelled at for being the way you were born, then meeting someone and finally developing feelings for them and they go and look at someone as their best friend. He does not know the look of a loved one that is why he is jealous, too him her face is more friendly towards her friend due to being another girl and not being shy.
All he learned was how much she cared for him, coming to a conclusion that the look on her face means a thousand times more when it is for him
And now, the look and emotions she shows him are... unbereable. :/
I'm glad he learned better later on.
FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT! THANK YOU!
I agree with you
In the human world, we call them psychopaths. Thank you.
@@BrigadeAkaba I mean, if I lived hundreds of years with only a few people ever even being slightly accepting of me since my birth while everyone else viewed me as a freak or monster....pretty sure I’d be a psychopath as well. And probably be WAAAAY worse off than Elias. (As would pretty much all of us really)
Elias could've solved this miscommunication problem by uttering one word; Cartaphillis. Then added, _'has control of your friend.'_ for good measure.
Ya but there is a creature possessing her, yes sacrificing her is wrong. But that thing is not person sadly it used Stella to get closer to Chise
I think it wouldn't help by chise's character. Probably she would think its a lie.
Well, Elías motive to sacrife her it was not only because of him, he was legitly jealous of Stella and that made her the perfect sacrifice in his eyes, to her ride of her.
Yeah, but that doesn't change the fact that he was still willing to sacrifice her.
Yeah, but let's be honest. Who would buy that?

Elias appeared so mature and sophisticated and reasonable in the beginning. But then as you go through the show, it's revealed just how different from humans he really is. How childish he still is. I mean, he was literally willing to kill a child not just to save Chise, but because he was jealous. Jealous! Of a little girl. Fuck, I love this show.
Isn't he really more like a human throughout the show? Don't humans do things like that all the time? He really was just heartless at the beginning of the show. He would've killed some girl just cause, but now he's doing it for a reason, albeit not a good one
...no, most normal humans don't kill out of jealousy o.O And I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have killed someone just cause. The fact that he didn't feel any remorse about it means he still has a lot of learning to do. The only humans he can relate to in this sense are psychotic humans. Not to mention he didn't even seem to care about what Chise wanted. "I never promised anything," he says. Like holy shit, ouch.
@@MajorZeldork I thought about killing some man's wife out of jealousy so you're wrong

I wouldn't call it childish, more like...savage. Willfull. He's being himself. The creature, not human, he is. Well--who am I to talk, I haven't seen the show yet, actually, hahaha.
This scene was heartbreaking. It was a terrible thing to do but he was scared of losing her and jealous. You have to remember, he doesn’t know how to handle emotions... he was just trying to save her the only way he could think of.
Tim The Destroyer that still doesn’t excuse how his thought process was
He's right it's her fault that this happened and Elias has emotions just like us so we have to be more considerate about them💙🌕🕯️🐬
People also may forget the fact that Elias has no real reason to care more about some random human than a rat, bug or other living creature.

@@timthedestroyer6894 haha, yeah UA-cam recommended page fed me some Magus bride this evening out of nowhere. Was nice to watch back on it, may rewatch it soon I think.
I love how Ariel protected/ had chise's back
The fact that she did that with her real hand really symbolizes something
Glad I'm not the only one to notice that. I guess because if she used her dragon arm it would have caused more damage on Elias but instead Chise allowed herself to get further hurt due to her self sacrificing nature...
Sacrifices are supposed to lose something to gain something else. Elias wanted Chise to live longer but would not lose anything, their magic may not have that limitation, Chise was ok with dying that way, she was ok with having Elias helping her, but because Elias did not involve her and would have 'sacrificed' Stella for Chise, she was upset.
"You were no different" the fairies would have done the same, sacrificed a stranger so the ones precious to them would have survived. They valued what she meant instead of who she was.
That was beautifully put, thank you😊
Technically the witch implanted the idea on Elias's mind when they went to see the witches. He knew Chise didn't have a long time and this was the only way. For a long time, Elias hasn't been doing anything than just walking like he did in the beginning. Meeting Chise inflicted so many feelings that he hasn't felt before. He loves her and deeply cares about her. He's like a little kid who doesn't want to share something precious that belongs to him which explains why he's jelous of Stella and chooses her for the sacrifice.
BlackKittyKat just because he is like a kid doesn't actually means he is one. Even if the witch implanted the idea , he still should have self control over his actions , he can very well choose not to do stuff.
He's not a child and his ignorance doesn't excuse his actions when Chise has been trying to teach him better. He's acting like her slave owner here by making choices for her without her consent or knowledge, not someone who cares about her well-being.
@@CreditR01 you also just described a parent. I haven't watched the show yet just this clip, but you just described him being a parent. There are many things that I don't ask my kids about before I do for them. Especially big life choices like school, who they can be around, where they can go and who they can see without me. All things that could help shape their personality as they get older. I'm not defending anything in the video (don't really know what's goin on) but from your standpoint on this, I could agree with him, just by your statement alone tho. Plus, we can see the chick in the video (not the red head) clearly has some issues goin on that the main girl can't see right now, that he can. Although I did hear him say it's mostly bcuz of jealousy, from his perspective, it was the right thing to do even if the chick was gonna hate him.

This is a great moment for Chise as a character. Elias tried to use the same words that always made her be on his side, yet she now has enough self-esteem to not only ignore those empty words, but answer without doubt. She, at that moment, hated what Elias actually was

One of the reasons I adore Tanezaki Atsumi as a voice actress! You can hear the pain and disappointment from the betrayal in Chise's voice !
What I really like about this scene is that it shows how fundamentally selfish Elias’s intentions were here. He knows that Chise wouldn’t want this; he knows it’s immoral and that it harms others. He knows that he’s breaking the trust of people that care for him, but he doesn’t care. He wants to keep Chise alive because it makes HIM happy.
His "sorry" was less like an apology and more like a "my b, bro"
It was more if a sorry because he got caught
Oh boy, the author of AMB is amazing, At first, Elias is portrayed as a caring, kind-hearted individual who tried to give happiness to a broken soul like chise by providing her with shelter, food knowledge and affection, as well as being protective of her. You'd think that he, an inhuman being, is more compasionate than most humans, but then it turns that he is possessive of Chise and hates that she forms other relationships, and is willing to do something as horrible as sacrificing an innocent girl so he could have Chise all to himself..
I understand why Elias would do this, and i always really liked him as a character, but such an action from someone like him is still schocking
For thing like that i love his development in the School arc (2nd season). Now he learn to listen to Chise opinion and have comunnication.
That is one well-trained dog right there.
He's a fairy. That is, a being much more intelligent than a standard dog. Have you seen the show?
At first I was like "Oh yeah ofc he's gonna kill someone to save Chise." then he runs into the girl and I'm like "Oh..this won't end well at all, Chise will hate you for that.". And then he revealed that he did it because he was jealous and I was just fucking baffled for a moment. Even more so because he straight up said it to Chise. For a moment I thought the spell required you to sacrifice someone close to the target of the spell to work but nope, Elias was just being Elias.
I absolutely adore him as a character though. His inhumanity is what makes him so fascinating and even relatable on some weird level.
The downside of honesty, is sometimes people don't like what you say.
GaGrin it’s been awhile since I’ve watch, or read, The Ancient Magus Bride, but from what I recall from watching it, I think Elias tried being bluntly honest as a means of gaining understanding and forgiveness. Because he knows he was certainly cagey before. Yet the act of honesty did not go as he expected obviously
@@crow2989 I wasn't just taking about Elias :)
Though, for the record, I would at least ask permission before sacrificing my lover/slave's friend, so I think I'd edge Elias out on the social awareness front even if I lose massively on the sexy monster front.
GaGrin i think it’s obvious the reason he didn’t ask Chise is because Chise is not the type to sacrifice someone for herself like that

Adrenaline.
that punch... he deserved that. he was controlled by his jealousy and selfishness. He didnt consider much of Chise’s choices so ofcourse she got mad. But then again he doesn’t know well enough about his feelings. He had still yet to learn. But neither can we blame Chise for getting mad. It was her future to decide and both Stella and Elias are precious to her.
I honestly don't understand why people are trying to defend him. He got taught would envy was and I'm pretty sure he has enough of an understanding of morality to know that what he was doing wasn't good. Plus, he didn't know the Stella was possessed and he definitely knew that chise would rather die than have someone be sacrificed for her.
Still Cleaning Up Your Shit People are defending him precisely because they understand him and people are upset as they think that he is just doing it out of envy (he's not). Stella is a threat, a relative stranger, Chise needs a sacrifice and he doesn't like her. The idea of morality that one person's life is more important than another is false, regardless of age or gender as it is all selfish in the end. Killing a 10 year old to save another life has nothing to do with morality as they are both lives in the end with the same amount of value.
As for Chise hating it, of course she does but he is willing to do it so that she can stay alive.
TalesOfGod still his fault .
Tony Nola exactly what I’m saying
TalesOfGod he just said he did it out of jealousy.
arguably a younger life has more life to live, and could therefore could be classed as more valuable when weighing up the two as sacrifices, also I know nothing about this anime.
It's not surprising that this happened. As fae Elias & Ruth are fundamentally different from humans. Fae have a differentsense of morality than humans. So sacrificing one human they barely know to save one they care about just makes sense to them. It also doesn't help that Elias is still trying to figure out what some emotions are & what they mean. Not saying they don't understand if something is wrong but it's important to remember they're both not human & desperate.

Ruth literally froze midestep!! Lol 🤣
Elias is still struggling with understanding human emotion and rationality, instead of talking to Chise about his feelings regarding Stella, he instead opted for this, not understanding how it would make Chise feel.
What makes this so interesting is to consider how far Elias has already come, but how far he has yet to go, human concepts like not giving into jealousy, or greed or malice, are concepts we teach children, but concepts he has yet to fully understand.
It makes it clear he isn't human, but at the same time, has some human in him allowing him to slowly learn these concepts.
Envy is one hell of a deadly sin, ain't it?
Yes it is.
So is obsession.
Yes envy of chise getting someone who she talks to whit more often while they only have small talk he was jealous qnd wanted to get rid of it

Okay, but the look Chise gave to Elias when she heard what her little friend said was terrifying ('-'
Nice to see the fairy having Chise’s back even after almost sending her to an unfortunate fate when she arrived at the house
Even the "Unfortunate fate" Was not something done with evil intentions. At that point the fairies and Elias were arguing over Chise like a new toy.
I cry everytime Elias opens his little mouth
“You look at Stella with a different expression than you do me.”
Maybe because Stella is a little girl? And usually when you have guests over, especially children, you’re supposed to act really nice and caring?
I understand that Elias doesn’t get this stuff and I love him but I almost lost my marbles when he tried to do this to Stella (I know Joseph is in there but he still wanted to do it to Stella behind Chise’s back and I know it’s because he wanted to save Chise but stilllllll)
I get what you're saying. He knows no restraint though. Lindel mentions that in earlier episodes. All he knows is he wants all of Chise's attention. Also didn't help that Chise opens up so freely and laughs with Stella when she doesn't do that with Elias.
I feel like the big underlying moral of this show is "love everyone.....Trust no one."
1:59

Necrophetamine
Why did this make me laugh so hard xD "The *gravity* of his f*ck up."
Heh. You could say Elias is kind of a "bonehead"
Ancient Magus Bride is the only romance I can read/watch while being happy. I don't like love rivals even if I know that the MC will win, and I don't like the sad feels, but I do like the whole Elias being some sort of demon thing(don't remember if they said it)
This is some crazy twisted drama writing that breaks faith in and between characters.
Amazing stuff...
My heart is breaking 😭 How can they ever return to what they were together after this. I thought Elias had actually made progress and started to learn Chise's feelings and what she wants/doesn't want. But no, I was too optimistic and hopeful. We saw in that jealous-episode, that Elias is very possessive over Chise and can't stand anyone else with her. Chise tried to teach him how he can't envy like that but well.. we did see that Elias still didn't accept it and only let go of Chise when she tried to hurt herself. (And didn't understand Chise was angry there though she was yelling and other stuff, so maybe he still hasn't learned anything but about loneliness)
But still he should have known that you don't hurt the ones your loved ones care for. And Ruth should have immediately known not to do anything to Stella!! I can't believe how they both were so blinded and forgot how Chise feels. I could accept it if they had taken some totally random guy or someone who is already dying, thinking he doesn't matter like Stella matters (ofc Chise still wouldn't accept it).
It's like, is Cartaphilus behind this? Did he made those two foolish like that? Messed with their minds? Maybe that witch magically planted an idea in Elias' mind that he has to sacrifice Stella and then Elias planted it in Ruth's mind or something.
nah its called be blinded by "love" realise how i put it in quotation cause i need a new word to define their affection lmao
I feel as though the writer is doing this to make people understand each other better, in a sense. By watching the anime, you can see that sometimes people are blinded by love and so some complicated events happen. A relationship has fights and such like what’s been happening in the anime/manga. It’s kinda like... a progression of understanding.
Also, Marielle the witch gave him a note that said the only thing that can replace a life is another life back at the witch gathering they went to.
Well Joseph wanted to make them get into a fight so Chise would accept his deal, so he played innocent as Stella to make what Elias was doing even worse.
Fae are different from humans. Caprcious and possesive. Elias is also very new to the hole emotion things. Him and Ruth were just going at it fae ways, sacrificing one life for another is fundamental in nature and between Chise and Stella it's clear who they value more.
A friend of mine in Anime Club said that I'd hate Elias as I continued to watch the series. Honestly, I don't hate him. That would be too easy. I'm just disappointed that he let his jealousy of Stella go that far. :(

1:21 *Facepalm* That is not something 'I'm sorry' can fix! He tried to kill a little girl (before knowing what she really was) just because he did not like that she got more attention from Chise!
@DarkSonic180 yes you can. Sure he hasn't dealt with emotions before but, he has been shown before to be able to talk about what he's feeling, so he could have easily told Chise and they could have figured it out. Also, he should have known by now about Chise's aversion to killing and how she wouldn't have been happy if they sacrificed Stella for her own life. And the fact that they are sacrificing someone, let alone a child. Children have been shown to be held in higher regard, along with elders, for being the future and he would have learnt all about children and their importance by then.
@DarkSonic180 I'm not sure I understand what you mean, please explain.
@J purple ramen I mean, when you are an almighty being that interacts with magic, I'm sure it can be. It is natural to use the lives of other beings as stepping stones, and we do that too, we just don't apply it to humans (or we say we don't) .so I can kind of see his logic. after all we don't really have information of him living in a social Corp and adapting, he was just babysitted by a random figure and apparently lived in a nomade style avoiding interaction with people. He just has enough connections to survive and maintains and isolated life style. Moral is primarily a cultural thing, and is kind of hard to inherit a good enough feel of that under the mentioned conditions. Evidently knowing chize and bonding with her was an improvement, but even with that into account you still can't apply moral in the same way you would do to a regular person.
also he only said "sorry", the not so formal way of it instead of saying "gomenasai" which is the more respectable form of it, which comes across as "sorry I ate your cake" instead of "sorry I hurt you and what u cared about deeply"

MoonHeartMo Oh, I've understood it was still up in the air whether there will even be a season 2. The season 1 covers up to 45 chapters of the manga, and currently only 58 chapters have been published (but the author is still publishing). Hence it seems there's too little material in the manga (only 13 new chapters) for a second full season to be published unless the creators decide to stray away from the manga.

Tbh I'm kinda surprised that no one talks about Ruth. I mean, yeah, you can argue that he can also lack human emotions since he technically never was one, he is a dog/fairy. And you could also argue that after losing his owner/sister, he can't bear to see Chise die too. There is also the fact that he also dies if she dies, but I doubt it motivated him, he doesn't appear to care too much if he has to die or not. He obviously was doing it for Chise and not himself.
But still, I find it odd. He was shown to have pretty human emotions, unlike Elias, he knows what love, hate, and others' feelings are. He also seems to be somewhat honorable since he saved Chise's life even when she was a stranger to him. So unlike Elias, he also has this trait of helping others, as Chise does.
Even if we accept that he really would agree to sacrifice a human for Chise's sake, I can't imagine him agreeing on Stella. It seems that any human would have worked, and while Chise would be disgusted by sacrifice in any case, Stella was still special. Stella is both a walking living evidence that Chise actions make people happy as well as one of her closest friends (i know that it stretches the definition of a close friend, but considering that most of her surroundings consisted of faeries and adults, it's clear that Stella became really dear to her). So that means that Ruth agreed to sacrifice not just any person, but an innocent child and one of the dearest friends to Chise when this was not needed.
And besides ALL that, his entire backstory is a tragedy of losing a sister and yet he was ok with killing a sister of another boy. What's the most baffling is that his involvement didn't even appear to be needed. I mean, MAYBE the ritual required a familiar and MAYBE his role was to bring sleeping Chise to the ritual (even though I believe Elias could have done it some other way).
All in all, it very well may be a plot loophole purely for more drama that doesn't make me love the show any less, but I just always found it really weird, because it seems very out of character for Ruth. Like, at the very least, you would expect him to feel really REALLY bad about all that, in reality, he would've probably tried to stop Elias instead of helping him. Because let's be real, if the ritual was a success and the curse went to Stella, even if Chise couldn't have done anything about it, she would've just killed herself. She still doesn't really value her own life and the only thing that keeps her up is the knowledge that she can help people. If she learned that her life cost another human's suffering and death, she would've immediately offed herself.
Then again, maybe Elias planned to just erase her memory right after the ritual so that she wouldn't even remember who Stella is. If you think about it, it could've been a pretty dramatic sub-plot, I can almost imagine the situation where after some more time Elias and Chise are closer than ever and then someone like Ashen Eye (it would've been totally in his style), told her about it or even returned her memories. Maybe showed her his memories of Stella when he captured her brother. All in all, you can imagine the amount of drama that would have happened if Chise learned that she was living all these months and maybe even years because her closest friend was sacrificed for that. And her memories were erased. And it was done by her husband and familiar, both persons who she is supposed to trust the most and who she trusted all this time.
Well, now that I said it, again, it would've been very dramatic, but IM GLAD THE AUTHOR WENT THE OTHER WAY AND I DONT WANT ANY CHILDREN AND INNOCENT PEOPLE TO BE SACRIFICED OR HARMED IN ANY OTHER WAY AND IM VERY HAPPY WITH THE DIRECTION THE STORY WENT, PLEASE DONT HARM STELLA OR SOMEONE ELSE, THIS MANGA/ANIME ALREADY HAS ENOUGH UNDESERVED SAD DEATHS AND CURSES AND I DONT WANT MORE THAN NEEDED, I JUST WANT EVERYONE TO BE HAPPY T_T.
The only thing I may have wished for is for Chise to be mad for more time. If Elias did it purely out of love, similar to how Matthew was killing cats to save Mina, considering his difficulties with recognizing morals and emotions, you could forgive him. But his reasoning was actually pretty REALLY egoistic. He didn't care that Chise wanted him to talk about such things. He didn't care what would she feel about Stella's sacrifice. As he said it himself, he only cared for her to be alive, because that's enough for HIM to be happy. I think at that moment Chise was disgusted most not even by the fact that Elias wanted to sacrifice Stella, but rather by the fact that Elias showed no interest in her feelings. At that moment, he treated her not as a partner, but as a broken toy. And by now it wasn't enough for Chise anymore.
Its really a very strong moment the more you think about it. For Chise, it was the first time when we see that being a lab puppy isn't enough for her anymore. A year ago, she was alright with being a toy, with the idea that she could be thrown away, that she could die. But now she has friends, she has reasons to live, she has a home and she has a choice! It's not just "stay with Elias or die", now she is free to choose her own way. Despite curses, she has both the will and power to leave Elias and she showed that. And it was the same for Elias. Before this scene, Chise always was coming back to him and always looked at him only with love. Considering how bad he is at emotions, you can almost understand him, he probably thought that there is nothing that could make Chise run away. For him, the sacrifice was almost a separate thing. Like, you wouldn't think that your dog would run away from you if you castrated it or if you killed a stray cat the dog was constantly chasing and barking at.
Chise was so loyal to him that in his understanding (or rather because he couldn't explain her loyalness himself) there was nothing that would make her want to leave him. It's pretty obvious in his behavior afterward. When he searches for Chise, he isn't so much angry or regretful. He is lost. He didn't understand what he has done wrong. The same way Chise couldn't understand why would her mother try to kill her and leave her alone out of nowhere, Elias couldn't understand why Chise left him, even though promised to always be with him. He really was just a lost child. So yeah, this moment is important, because even though in the ending Elias says that he still thinks he was right and he can't promise to never do awful things again, this episode showed to him that Chise isn't blindly loyal to him and if he does something that would upset her, she would leave him. Sadly that does imply that he could just try to do such things without her knowledge so FUCK YOU INVISIBLE ONION NINJAS, I CAN ALREADY SENSE YOU COMING IN THE FUTURE ARCS.
This makes me cryyyyy😭
