    I just ordered a Pop-up 38. Gearing up for my first hunt out west this year.

    Great job!! Really like the pop-up packs. I use the 18 most of the season, and switch to the 38 when I need the layers. Keep my predator platform on the outside and stick my boot blankets in the load shelf, it I want em I got em, if not, they take up no space. Had the same issue with digging deep in the 38, so I just stuff a layer I'll never use to fill the space on the bottom. I live in Alberta, so by the time it gets that cold for the layers, bulk & weight pretty much goes out the window!

      They seem to be a big name for western hunters. Randy Newberg is one of their brand ambassadors.
      I’m normally not one to go for the “premium” products but my old Walmart backpack was at its end of its life. Between saddle hunting on public land last year and an out of state hunt this year that HOPEFULLY will require me to haul out a very large quarter of meat, this pack seemed like the right fit for me.

    Just received my MR PU28, purchased specifically for saddle hunting in the NE. Love the ability to put sticks/platform in the load shelf area. I also ordered some accessory straps from MR to be able to strap my bow onto the outside of the pack, for hands free hiking, when bombing a long way from the truck. The 38 would be nice to pack a set of bibs in for late season cold weather hunting but, figure I may be able to pack that layer in the shelf area, as well, to avoid being soaked in sweat on arrival to my tree. We’ll see.

    • @TheBudgetSportsman
      @TheBudgetSportsman  3 роки тому

      Yes, that’s what I did this year...packed bibs and extra layers in the shelf on the 28.
      Let me know how the accessory straps work for holding your bow. I’ve considered doing the same.

    Great video. What is your total pack weight for your typical filmed hunt out of your 28?

    • @TheBudgetSportsman
      @TheBudgetSportsman  2 роки тому +1

      It’s usually up close to 35 lbs.
      14lbs - saddle, ropes, platform, sticks
      12lbs - camera gear
      Plus the weight of the backpack puts you over 30. Then the odds and ends like water snacks, kill kit, first aid kit…all add a couple more pounds.
      It definitely sounds like a lot when everyone is trying to cut weight but the pack handles it well and I’m way more comfortable and mobile then I have ever been with a climber or hang on.

    Great review. I'm new to saddle hunting... do you climb with the pack on your back, taking 1 stick out at a time as you go? And, if so, are they pretty easy to pull out while wearing the pack?

  • @elkhunter7619

    I'm interested in the MR Pop Up 38 but you keep talking about "Saddle Hunting". Saddle Hunting in Montana is "off your horse"- from the saddle, usually elk hunting. I am wondering if you're wearing the pack , does it interfere with the cantle (back of your saddle) while riding? Wish it had more pockets. Thanks and good video

    • @TheBudgetSportsman
      @TheBudgetSportsman  2 роки тому +1

      My apologies, I am not referring to saddle hunting from a horse. Here on the east coast it is popular to hunt from a tree saddle much like an arborist would use. I’m not much help when it comes to any hunting involving a horse, though I would love to have that experience.

    These bags don’t seem to have enough pockets. Everything has to be planned out because your stacking everything on top of things.
    Is the pack waterproof or do you need to carry a rain cover for it?

    I was wondering how you pack your backpack if you use the skeletor sticks?

    • @TheBudgetSportsman
      @TheBudgetSportsman  Рік тому +1

      The standoffs are a little wider and they don’t pack quite as well in the same configuration. I’ve been putting them crossways in the bottom of the load shelf. The “posts” are in the bottom of the shelf and the standoffs are sticking out in either side. The down side is that you are definitely a wider load and can hang up a little easier.

      I just got pop up 28 last week I really love it I had a trophyline C.A.Y.S backpack it had a lot go good features but without a frame back your gets sour. My back doesn't get sour anymore it's a huge difference. This backpack makes you more mobile with ability to quarter out a deer up to 80lbs is a game changer. From my research a lot easier than a deer cart.

    • @TheBudgetSportsman

      Yes it is possible to completely remove the bag from the frame. Mystery Ranch also makes some different style of frames that you may be able to purchase without a bag.

    You are spot on Nate with your assessment of these two packs, the bigger brother 38 and the smaller sibling 28. The Pop up 28 would be perfect 👌 for day hunts, perhaps an overnight, while the 38 would be great for a 3 or 4 day backcountry backpack style hunt out west. Not sure if that out of state tag is such a hunt out west or to the Midwest for big whitetail like Iowa?
    For me I am looking for a pack that I can day hunt, bring some saddle gear, maybe an extra layer depending upon the time of year. Plus I want to be able to use the meat 🍖 shelf to take a whitetail quartered out of some deep and steep places in West Virginia. Plus do multiple 1-3 day backcountry trips out west staying mobile for a week to 10 days. So the Pop up 38 might be better for me.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these two packs. My dilemma would be one kind of do all compromise pack or two packs that are better suited for each type hunt.

    • @TheBudgetSportsman
      @TheBudgetSportsman  3 роки тому +1

      I think the 28 is a great day pack but might be too small for overnights and the 38 is great for short overnights but wouldn’t be good for those 10 day hunts. I think I would go for a pop up for day hunts and a larger MR pack for the longer hunts.

    • @TheWVgoodguy22
      @TheWVgoodguy22 3 роки тому

      @@TheBudgetSportsman I definitely agree with you 100%. If I went with the 38 I would be limited as you mentioned to about 3 days then have to head back to the truck to restock and possibly move areas and stay mobile. If I wanted to stay longer I would have to run the Metcalf, Marshall or Beartooth. I will get the smaller pack for now since I mostly will be using it for day hunts, saddle hunting and if I get to go pronghorn hunting. Then keep an eye out for sales on a larger pack later on for any longer hunts. Thank you again for your thoughts and advice

      If you are asking about my entire saddle hunting setup with the backpack in was 33-35 pounds. If you are on Facebook, you can check out this post about the individual weights. I believe I even posted a spreadsheet breakdown of the weight in the comments.
