😂😂 My Mom was a woman before her time, God rest her soul. She wore men's Levis....always. She worked for oil companies all her life so she had to dress professional, but when she was home, it was Levis and a t-shirt/sweatshirt. She called it her "Uniform". She was also super skinny and short waisted so men's jeans fit her better....She also talked like a sailor, but that is another story. 😊

Men’s button fly Levi’s were super hot in the 70’s and 80’s. They were also only around $15. Now they’re around $100.

Probably, when your mom started wearing men's jeans there weren't really any women's jeans. Men's jeans still have full length pockets and they used to come in a much greater variety of inseam lengths. I could by 23" inseam and just fold it once.

I worked at Lucky Brand Jeans in college, and they do use the number sizing for both men’s and women’s waist and inseam. My favorite part of that job was helping women find the right fit for their bodies, but the absolute best was putting them in a pair of men’s jeans after they were disappointed in the women’s selection. Watching the skepticism turn to disbelief and then joy was extremely satisfying. 😊 Great advice!

I agree, thrift these days aren't that much cheaper than new from Walmart.

    • @sassodapop
      @sassodapop Рік тому

Fast fashion costs WAY more when you count labor abuse, toxic pesticides, and defoliants sprayed on cotton, synthetic dyes, the environmental degradation and energy requirements for manufacturing and shipping, and the inevitable future waste stream when these cheap clothes fall apart and get tossed in landfills or burned in third world countries, creating toxins that pollute the air. And the process of manufacturing synthetic fibers is even more toxic, look up cancer rates in acrylic and nylon factory workers, it’s so sad. This versus driving to your local thrift shop and buying what has already been made. There are some great documentaries on fast fashion and the impact now and on future generations. We are the ones who have to drive the change, let’s do it for the children.❤️

I know that crap is so annoying I am over it, never really in to it either. They look like rags. As for trying to get my size is pretty much impossible I am a size 7 , a 6 is a little too small and an 8 too big since when and why can't you get odd numbered sizes? Oh yeah not all of us need or want pull on pants and or definitely not jeans, I'm not a baby or a toddler. I probably shouldn't go off about needing stretch in my jeans either, because I don't need that either. Some of us would really appreciate these options too.

    • @victorialove9104

Holes in jeans are trashy not classy. I think they look terrible. Wear them out organically ok. Use them for chores. Fake worn out is stupid. I traveled the world for 5 years when I was young and came across many people who were too poor to afford clothes that weren't ripped or torn. They would have loved clothes that were in whole condition. I often brought along new shirts, etc to give away. So it seems to me that wearing new clothes that are "distressed " and often paying a pretty penny for them is elitist and making a mockery of the poor.

I laughed at your description of women's jean sizes vs men's. When I was growing up, all jeans were sized in the 2-number way and once you found the right fit (first number) you had your choice of lengths (second number/inseam). The other choice was straight leg or boot cut. That was it, and it was easy to find your size and you didn't have to go through all of today's shape-names. Our choices were pretty much Levi's, Lee or Wrangler. Levi's 501 and 505 were particularly popular, and the most loved that you always hung onto as long as possible were the button-up ones. Your tee hacks are brilliant. My only 'no' is the jeans distressing. I have never understood this paying (sometimes outrageous prices) for jeans my mom would have thrown in the trash. If we got a hole in a pair that were super comfy and we desperately wanted to keep, we covered it with a patch. You could put a cute ready-made one on, or cut one of those iron-on denim patches a little bit bigger than the hole and iron it on. Then we would embroider some cool design on it so the whole thing looked like an intentional embroidery and you couldn't tell it was a repair. The two other things we used to do with our jeans if the knees wore through was we made them into cut-offs (we never called them shorts) or cute denim skirts. Today, I still laugh at the 'distressed look' clothes and marvel that they can get people to part with their hard-earned money to look like they got dressed out of a dumpster (sorry, just my old person's opinion). If mine get like that I will wear them to do yard work or clean the house, but that's it.

In my 70s now and have been buying men's jeans since I was a teenager for one simple reason: my legs are too long for women's jeans. I suffer from 'high-water syndrome'.
I have a short torso (so basically no waist) but long limbs, so anything meant to go over ankles or wrists stop short on me. So, it's been men's pants and shirts if I'm looking for long sleeves or legs; long skirts have to be custom-made. It's very rare to find leggings long enough for my legs.
That all being said, LOVE your modification ideas!
I'm all for comfort and simplicity in clothing (hate fussiness), and your suggestions hit that sweet spot!
The only thing I would add is to fold these items to bring left and right sides together, to better guarantee balance in cutting. Not everyone can freestyle cutting and not end up with one side trimmed higher than the other.

On weirdly sized tees, on the bottom, do side slots about 5 inches up. Helps if that part is tighter than you like. Pop a stitch in & it will stay that way forever.

Thank you for the tips on buying jeans from the men's department. I'm in need of new jeans, and for less than $20 and with so many pockets, too! Next time I go to Walmart, I'm heading over there right away. Already thinking about what I'm going to do with all those pockets!

So glad you are doing this! I have been stilling my hubby's stuff for over 30yrs even men's shoes fit my big 11 feet. It is hard to find cute shoes in my size but for everyday running men's do great for the job and cost less!

One of my coworkers wore a size 11 shoe, and loved TJ Maxx because they always had a ton of shoes in her size.

After you make the shorts, the part that you cut off makes great hot pads or oven mitts. For the hot pads, just cut to size, turn inside out, pin quilt batting to the front, sew across one end, including the batting in the seam, sew the bottom seam, but leave a space big enough to turn it right side out. Turn it inside out and sew the opening closed by folding in the seam allowance and topstitching across the whole seam. Then topstitch the other seam. If you want to add a hanging loop, add the loop before you sew the seam. If you want to make oven mitts, use the leg section and cut out your pattern from it, and proceed following the pattern instructions. You now have very useful and attractive things made out of the waste material.

Oh my goodness I am so happy to have found this video! I literally just bought a pair of pants from the women's section at Walmart not even a month ago and they are already tearing at the pockets, so frustrating! And I just haven't wanted to go back because I'm tired of my jeans always wearing out so quickly. Never ever thought to go to the means section for pants but that is genius! I already know my in seam, just got to measure my waist!

I like the pockets on men's jeans. they are real and usable pockets. I too like the sizing of waist and length. And if you just wash and dry the jeans that you just cut, they will fray naturaly and easier to pull the threads out as you go. Coming from someone that was a teen in the 1970's when frayed hem jeans were very cool. Also. If you put your jeans on, while wet, and wear them until they dry, (wear a belt to hepl the waist draw in to your waist) they will conform to your body quicker. At least that worked with the 100% cotton jeans of the '70's. I wore men's jeans a lot back then due to the sizing. my legs were long for my skinny body. To get jeans that fit my waist and hips, i needed much longer jeans than the ladies jeans provided. back then, the longer jeans were the style. Like touching the ground kind of long. lol some of this may not work as well with jeans that are not 100% cotton. though it may on jeans that are very high percentage cotton. 95% maybe?

Getting ready to jeans shop for fall and will have to try this. I'm in between sizes in women's. One is too tight the other is too loose. Plus the spandex they Put in womens jeans looks and feels great at the beginning of the day, but by the end the jeans are all stretched out.

I discovered a long time ago that men's flannel shirts not only fit me better but last much longer than women's flannel shirts. I buy my shirts at thrift stores. Thrift stores are also a really good way to find unique jewelry.

Brilliant hacks! This may be right up there with your famed wrapping paper video! I've been buying men's jeans for years because of the inseam (I have very long legs), but I never thought about hacking their hoodies!! I've got some shopping to do!✂

I started buying Walmart mens Wranglers and George brand jeans 3 years ago. Im glad I tried a pair on. I was always buying Levi's for over 30 years. I can buy 3-4 pairs of Walmart jeans now for the same price as Levi's jean.

I tried the Jean technique a few months back with me and my friends told me about it but unfortunately with the way my body type is it did not flatter me at all… My stomach is bigger than my hip area so I have to wear a bigger size and so there’s just way too much bagginess in the front that it was not a good luck. They look great on you though!

I’m 70 & been buying from the men’s department for years!! I discovered this when I was buying clothing for my husband & sons. The men’s department have better prices, their turtleneck’s & sock’s are made with better material than women’s depending on the store. I’ve styled men’s dress shirts to a feminine fit for me because the material is far better, more colors, patterns & wrinkle-free. 😊

The Pink Tax is savage. I've been wearing guys stuff for about two decade.
Also, for better deal, hit up retailers starting in mid-September for deals on their fall stuff (ex. T shirts that would be awesome layered under something warmer) and then January for their winter stuff.
I used to ALWAYS buy my new winter coat from a store that was called Bon-Ton. Amazing product quality, massive discounts, and POCKETS GALORE.
It was a sad day when that store finally closed. Ended up getting a women's winter jacket last year. Was not impressed.

I had gotten like 5 shirts the day after father's day that were $0.50 each. I got them in a large size for pj shirts. Anyway, a few years later I used them for the first couple weeks with baby. I would go throb multiple in a day and not worry about ruining them by over washing. Then when my baby stopped spitting up so much they were up cycled to burp clothes. Then they were finally retired. RIP father's day shirts.

Thanks for the info on the jeans. I am 5'9 and have a 32 in inseam. Finding women's jeans that actually FIT me is impossible. I won't be cutting them up though. As for tops and sweatshirts I will start at the thrift store or a yardsale.
