There are many reasons to love this song, but I think my top one is that even though the songs were about women's butts, they didn't show women's butts. They showed their own. They weren't vulger or cheap about this subject matter at all, and it would have been so easy to veer into that territory. And I loved them even more for that.
I absolutely agree - such an excellent and respectful move on their part.
If you haven't reviewed Brothers in Arms by Home Free, I recommend it. Thanks 👍
The phrase "make you slap your grandma" is a Southern thing. It just means that you find something or someone so awesome, delicious, gorgeous, or some other superlative that it causes you to lose all sensibility and do something normally unthinkable, like slapping your grandma. Adam Rupp actually puts a slap sound in his beatboxing just after Tim sings that line.
No grandmas were slapped in the production of this video.
Having been raised in the south, it wasn't until I started watching reactions to this HF video that I realized the phrase wasn't universally known! Because, yes, probably the biggest mistake you could ever make in your (likely, very shortened) life would be to slap your grandma! Everyone around you would take a step back and think "I hope it was worth it!" 🙂❤
Thank you very much for the clarification. That's a very evocative phrase. :-)
Hahaha! Yeah, that would not go well... :-P
You’re one of the only reactors to notice Tim eating the ham sandwich. Hahaha. They’re nuts and we love them. Last song is by Luke Bryan I think. Just so much fun and sounding good while doing it. Good reaction David!🥰
I always listen to hear if anyone else notices Tim eating the sandwich, not many do x
@@dotwyness4110 I know! He was one of the only ones to notice. 🤣
I love how nuts they are - it's brilliant! There's something so simple about a) putting the sandwich in the video and b) having someone eat it, and it just elevates the humour without distracting at all - especially evident since so many miss it on a first viewing.
@@davidkreacts Tim is known as the Foodie in the group.
yes, Country Girls Shake It For Me was indeed Luke Bryan of country 🎶 music fame!
This was an April Fool’s upload. They have so much respect, that they didn’t want to do anything to offend women, so, all the butt shots are of their own. I’m so glad you had fun with this! BTW, Chris Rupp did a reaction video to this where he talks about a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff. It’s another fun one to watch. A fun thing to note is that during the Sir Mix-A-Lot section, Tim was doing the beatboxing because Adam was doing the record scratching. They try to make it so they can do these songs live, so someone had to take over the beatboxing for that section.
Definitely go watch Chris' video.
I didn't even catch the timing of the upload - that's great! I will have to check Chris' video out for sure. I didn't catch that Tim was covering Adam there - love how versatile they all are, and thinking of the live performance is really smart.
The notice popped up on the screen for this and I yelped "you've made my day!" before I even saw the reaction. This medley always makes me smile.
Haha! I'm very glad to hear it!
Bootyfully arranged, sung and visually hilarious, love it! 🍑😁👍
Absolutely!
This is truly Home Free. 🥰 Sometimes I can get tears in my eyes because it is so emotional 😢and other times I have those tears too but from laughing😂. But always it's so good!!! And than Rob's amazing whistling and rap. This is just hilarious. 🤣
Also pay close attention to what is happening in the background
They are extraordinarily versatile, both within individual songs and in general. :-)
Every time I listen to this, I hear something new, some nuance of Home Free's a cappella genius. Every time I watch it, I see something new, but now you've provided me with Film Making 101 and I understand what I'm seeing as well. Again, you held my attention for an hour. Thank you for such a wonderfully educational analysis.
Thank you for the compliments - I'm so glad that you got something out of my video. :-)
Yes; Tim can get down there. One of my favourite "basement-note" Tim moments happens in their recording of "Elvira" with the Oak Ridge Boys. (Which you very much need to react to in my not-so humble opinion.)
I love all of the throwbacks to the original music videos/styles of each of these songs. The club bit for The Thong Song is spot on (with their own touches, of course), the bit with Tim sitting in the chair surrounded by everyone else is right out of "Honky-tonk Badonkadonk"... They did a great job with it. And I love that any time there's a close-up of a butt, it's one of theirs.
Gosh, this is a fun medley! Awesome react as per usual!
Thank you! Yes, I'm looking forward to Elvira, for sure! Yeah, this is both very good at honouring originals, but so them too - love it!
They intentionally did not highlight the women's 'butts'.
'Looks like a country boy's girlfriend' is also part of the Baby Got Back intro - it was "looks like one of those Rap guys' girlfriends"
Love that so much - this was very respectfully done, for sure.
I don't know why I didn't think of it, but thank you for the clarification!
Rob is an exceptional whistler! ♥️
He really is! You rarely hear that clarity and precision.
@@davidkreacts recommend Chris Rupp
“Rockin’ Robin”
Rob joined him and does more whistling 😉
Buegs is also in Can't stop the feeling. Tim is known as the Foodie of the group so he would be eating the sandwich. Thanks for a great reaction/analysis, David.
Ah, good to know - thanks. Makes sense for Tim to be a foodie - have to fuel that bass engine of his! ;-) You're welcome - thank you for watching.
Yay! You caught two things that so many reactors miss seeing: Tim eating the ham sandwich and then rocking out when Fat Bottom Girls starts. Chris has his own youtube channel where he gives an insider's background to many of Home Free's videos. That's at ChrisRuppOfficial. One thing he revealed that is easily missed is during the scene where Tim is sitting at the table with Chris and a standing behind him with a lot of the ladies dancing around him. Notice the black lady in the blue dress next to Chris. When the camera comes in and you see her (and the others around her) just from the neck down. You don't see Chris in the closer views. That because he wasn't there for that bit of filming; he was out at Chipotle buying lunch for everyone. So much great info at Chris's site.
I've learned from this one in particular that Tim is a good one to keep half an eye on at all times! ;-) Definitely going to check out Chris' channel and BTS stuff - I love hearing all the inside tidbits about how things were made. Love that lunch made him miss a shot - he's not the first and won't be the last!
Point of interest, Layne from VP worked on the arrangement for this one.
I caught that! Love the interplay between the groups. :-)
You noticed so much that took me several views! Please keep reviewing Home Free!
Thank you - I think reacting has honed my eye for something interesting. I've been catching things in movies and TV that I normally didn't before. More HF coming soon.
David, your comment that Adam gets "it so right that you almost don't notice how good it is" really hit home for me. I find myself overlooking his part because it's so dadgum good that I tend to forget it's coming from a guy with a microphone! 🙂❤
It was so much fun to watch you go through this. It took somebody telling me about it before I finally saw Tim's rocker moment - after approximately 30 viewings. There is actually someone whose wardrobe changes for every song. Something else that I didn't catch for many, many viewings. Adam has a different bandana for every song. I only caught it because the one for Fat Bottom Girls was so eye-catching. If you would like to hear them do more Queen, look for a teaser they did several years ago utilizing Bohemian Rhapsody. I didn't believe it until I saw it, either. Enjoyed your comments, as always. Scratchies to Timmy.
OMG, I thought I was the only one who missed Tim headbanging! I'd seen this so many times before, like you, I read it in the comments - and then couldn't figure out how I'd always missed it! 🙂❤
The amount of little details in this is awesome! Didn't catch the bandanas though - thanks for pointing it out. Will have a look out for the Bho Rhap teaser - that sounds fun. Timmy says: "Meow!"
Great reaction & analysis! This is such a fun mashup of songs. Very cleverly done from one song to another. The talent these guys have is phenomenal. They have so much fun but the vocals never suffer. And Adam's beatboxing is on another level. Home Free was very respectful in this video about not exploiting or offending any women.
Absolutely agreed on all counts!
Chris Rupp's fun idea, that's turned into one of the Home Fries' favourite videos. I was wondering if you'd spot this was FifGen - that's McKenzie's voice you can hear in the BTS part of the outro. One of the many cool things about this, I think, is that I'm seriously not sure you could make a medley like this (with songs in so many different styles) work with instruments - it demonstrates the sheer versatility of acapella.
Rob is an incredible whistler - you can also hear him on one of Tim's early originals with the group, Champagne Taste, but also in live performances of Rocking Robin - if you want to extend further in the Home Free extended universe, he finally recorded it with 7th Avenue, a group Chris Rupp founded after leaving Home Free.
Amazing how sometimes a thing that begins as "a bit of a laugh" can turn into something so beloved and successful! Oh, I didn't catch that was McKenzie - thanks for pointing that out.
Yeah, I feel like there would be a lot of stylistic whiplash if you did this with instruments - this works perfectly a capella.
Noted on the whistling, and I will definitely check out the 7th Ave vid at some point.
For another fun HF song check out Brother. There’s so much going on in the video I had to watch it several times before I could concentrate on the singing. 😊
What do you want to know?
My original remark concerned the action occurring in ‘Brother’
Brother is on the list - I'll be getting to that in due course.
My gosh David! I love your breakdown of the video. Many reactors who are musically trained either are over my head or boring. Not you! My attention was held for the whole reaction. Thank you❤for making an awesome video even more enjoyable.
Thank you so much! My aim is to be involved without being too technical, so I'm glad that worked for you. :-) More HF coming soon.
I loved your phrase "they've Home Freed it up!" Absolutely. Thank you!
Haha! I've come to realise that all the major groups are just spectacularly talented at making something sound like they did it - I haven't heard groups so consistently successful until I came to the world of professional a capella.
After all that Queen in this medley we can transition either to VoicePlay Queen in 5 minutes or Tommy Johansson covering The Show Must Go On or Who Wants To Live Forever.
A bit surprised that you didn't check the description like you often do.Then you would have discovered that one major arranger here was Layne Stein. VP and HF doing collaboration once more.
Edit: Oops you did discover it after I posted.
Definitely going to be checking those out soon. Excited for all of them!
The opening bass line mimics the driving bass line in Baby Got Back.
I missed commenting on that, but yes, you're absolutely right.
Immediately subscribed. You caught all of the little Easter eggs in the video, you know what a medley is AND how to pronounce it. Plus you were familiar with almost all of the songs. And your format of listening to the video all the way through first wins my heart!
Edit 1: I just now realized the shot is tilted during Honkytonk Padonkadonk....
Edit 2: Also, have you caught Home Free doing Bohemian Rhapsody?
Edit 3: Tim and Adam giving Austin the side eye as he's writhing on the stage floor during FBG.
Edit 4: Rob wearing the jumper tied around his shoulders during the Thong Song gives me Carlton (from Fresh Prince of Bel- Air) vibes (nerdy guy in a hip hop setting).
Thank you for the sub! More HF coming soon. I appreciate the compliments, though I'm confess to being curious how others pronounce medley...? 1) How did I not catch the shot tilt? Great spot! 2) I haven't, but it's on the list. 3) That was amazing - thanks for the spot. 4) Actually, yep - that totally checks out - I wonder if that was deliberate...
Now, you need to check out the Country Fried Pop Medley! Oh, and Brother! Beautiful song, hilarious video.
Both on the list - looking forward to both of them!
That's for sure a lot of fun, and one of their most requested videos!
Makes sense - it's so enjoyable.
Fun reaction as always! Glad to see how much fun you had with this one. As it's been mentioned, all of the butt shots were of themselves. Fun fact, Layne Stein from Voiceplay helped with this arrangement.
If you like Queen, you need to check out Voiceplay's Queen in 5 Minutes.
Thank you! Hard not to enjoy this! I'll be getting to the VP Queen soon, for sure. Really looking forward to that.
I'm impressed you saw Tim eating the Ham Sandwich. Usually it takes watching this a couple of times to pick that out.
Thank you. It's partially that I have learned he's one to keep an eye on, but the more I respond to folks commenting on this, the more I think someone may have given me a heads-up months ago, and I'd forgotten that until now.
I appreciate HF humor and their awesome remix of these songs
Wholeheartedly agreed.
LOL Austin perfectly channeled Freddie for this including the drop to the floor and toss . yup Full on HAM our Loveable Austin Theatrical soul he went all in on hamming it up. I know they had a blast. Best thing is they always service the song needs.
YES! He really did - I'm very impressed with him as Freddie.
more HF trivia Back when they were in the Sing Off Season 4 the producers had requested they do Country Girls Shake it for me and wanted them to go all in like Luke Bryan did and they refused because they didn't want to disrespect women. LOL Years later they do the song On Their own terms and their own way. That's Class!
I love that they both a) did it in a really respectful way and b) flipped the script on it back against the Sing Off producers - this is so much classier than that would have been.
Good reaction! I've seen the Atkins' video. It had lots of female bootie. HF was much more respectful.
I saw the original video recently and I was horrified.
Agreed. Ick.
I feel like I can imagine. I didn't worry about watching it - this is entertaining enough!
This is fun. I listened to Boy Bands in 5 Minutes had Geoff saying, "Never trust a big butt and a smile." Must be the theme for the day.
Right?! Sometimes the more technical something is, the easier it is to overlook it.
I heard from an interview that Chris Rupp choreographed the line dance scene. So guess that had to do with Tims laughter during rehearsal!
Amazing!
Funny enough, the only thong, er song I could think of them adding is Destiny Child's "Bootylicious." I really enjoyed your reaction to this one David! 🙂❤
Thank you! Oh, yeah - that would have fit in if they'd chosen to use it.
I can listen to this one on repeat 24/7. I know you have this recommendation on your list but I can't wait for you to get to Helplessly Hoping. Shorter than the average but so much technical/technique stuff to cover. (I don't think you've covered yet).
Looks like your YT is big enough to get the scammers!
It's my favorite HF cover - it's breathlessly beautiful! 🙂❤
It is truly amazing! HH is definitely coming before too long, and I'm lookign forward to it from everything I've heard.
I think it's flattering, but I'm surprised it happened so soon! Only the one so far, but the ban hammer is ready for the next one! ;-)
HF used to do this on their shows with a fun choreo.. it was a blast! There are lots of fan recorded videos if you’d like to take look.
Thanks for a thorough analysis! I think you caught everything.
You are welcome, and thank you for the compliments. I would love to see them do this live, but will check out the videos in the meantime.
You mentioned that their logo looks like gold. I always think of it as being sort of like a wood grain effect that gives you a "country" feel.
That makes sense - it definitely has a country vibe.
Hilarious!
🤣🎶👌
Absolutely!
This is a very funny video. Love how these guys just love to be silly. They are very down to earth young men.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Please try the country pop medley soon!! It’s amazing the way they thread in and out of songs!!
It's on the list. :-)
*grabs popcorn*
Hope it was good popcorn! :-D
Great reaction ! You might also enjoy reacting to Home Free's smash up Thinking out loud/Let's get it on. It's filmed in one shot by the same company 5th gen and is directed acted out by the couple now known as thehound and the fox before they started their own music career on U Tube
Thank you! I have that mash up on the list, and will get to it in due course. Love that they did a one-shotter - not something you see in music videos as much.
I believe in one of HomeFree’s discussions of this one, they mention that Layne actually helped with the initial arrangement of the songs.
Yeah, they mentioned it in the description too, but I didn't catch that until much later in the video. I love the interplay between the groups.
GOOD CATCH ON TIM EATING THE SANDWICH
Thank you!
The first girl in "I Like Big Butts" says something like "She looks like some rap guy's girlfriend," hence Austin's change to "country boy's" :)
I'm surprised at myself for forgetting that line, but yes, you are absolutely right.
They also have a great pop mashup called Country Fried Pop Medley.
It's on my list to check out!
Timmy!
Chris and Adam's sister had connections to a modeling school, which is how they got the extras for this video. (Other than Buegs, of course. I think someone told me those are the same overalls that Tim wore for Champagne Taste.) There's so much going on in the background it's hard to take it all in. Glad you caught Tim headbanging and eating the ham sammich.
I second the request for you to react to Brother. It's a serious song with a heartwarming message but they have so much fun with the storytelling you won't get through it without turning red from laughing. "Butts" had hair and makeup by Austin's then-girlfriend Olena. Austin's current significant other Amberly is on screen in Brother, in costume and makeup, and she's as funny as the guys. Be sure to watch all the way to the end. Their LARPing personas give us a clue to the guys' off-stage interests, like Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars.
Oh, that makes complete sense - it hadn't occurred to me to wonder where they came from, but now that you say it, it was a good question! It is a lot, for sure - the amount of small details is crazy. Brother definitely on the list - I'm looking forward to it.
Love your cheekiness about the "almost a-dult content"!🤣
Thank you for mentioning the arranging. It is truly brilliant arranging! Loads of fun!
It's such an important part of everything these groups do.
So funny!! Some fantastic singing and beatboxing!! Subbed for more HF!!
Absolutely agreed! More HF coming soon.
Buegs also sings in yet another acapella group. So glad you have been enjoying the Avid Indoorsman Marvel episodes. I can't remember if Reilly and McKenzie from The Hound and the Fox are on those or not. Speaking of which, I know Disney month is over but The Hound and the Fox just released a new one...Best of Friends from the Disney movie The Fox and The Hound. 😉
Ah nice. Which group is that? (Could look myself, but so behind on comments!) I think there might be a Hound and Fox one? Or at least one with Reilly. I will definitely do Best of Friends - I think I'll have to do another Disney month (or eight) at some point - there is just so much to cover!
@@davidkreacts Eric is in a group called Sound Exchange. They aren't huge but do a few gigs in the upper midwest every year. It's funny how small the acapella world can be. Adam Rupp's brother, Chris, has gone on to start at least two more acapella groups since leaving Home Free. Cypress Fyre, (which is just 3 guys) and 7th Avenue with sister, Tristin Rupp. Yes, the Rupp family is very musical. Cypress Fyre is working on an album I believe. Rob Lundquist of Home Free did a song/video with 7th Avenue..."Rockin Robin".
Not everyone catches Tim eating the sandwich. Kudos!
Thank you! I think someone way back when mentioned it would happen, but I'd forgotten until after I saw it.
The producers of the Sing Off wanted the band to sing Country Girl Shake it for Me. The guys drew themselves up to their considerable height and said they weren't that kind of band. A few years later ....
Well done for spotting Tim eating the sandwich. But did you see him headbanging at the beginning of Fat Bottomed Girls? In fact I suspect that it was originally intended that more would be made of the various styles in that song. Tim is dressed goth and looks disapprovingly at Austin channelling Freddie, but that section is too short to carry much more.
I believe the girl sitting between Austin and Tim in the first section is Austin's ex. The girls were friends and colleagues of Chris's sister.
Yes, you did see Tim headbanging. Apologies!
Haha! That's great - it's good that they got to do it on their own terms.
I wondered about the brevity of FBG - it felt like it was the one section that didn't really get the reprise as much as the others. Still awesome as it is though.
That's cool - I love that they encourage friends and family to be involved with their work. :-)
Not everyone picks up on Tim chowing down on the ham sammich!
It's a key moment of the video, for sure! Definitely subtle though - placed well enough to be hilarious, but it doesn't distract - I admire their restraint with that moment.
Great reaction truly enjoyed the break down. Thanks.
You are welcome! Thank you for watching. :-)
This is their funniest song for sure! One of the other comedic numbers (and there are many) is Rick Astley's Never gonna give you up. For that one, you should watch the original first to pick up how many references they use. It was another April fool's song in which they started a number of great songs and then we were Rick rolled for a few days prior to the drop of the whole song. I think you'll like it. I don't know if the Rick roll shorts are still available. Adam Rupp has a live piece of him doing his beatbox and scratch stuff called Drum solo It's amazing! They call him a freak of nature. It's probably something you won't feature as there is no singing or music of any kind, just Adam.
I can believe it - it's hilarious! I will definitely have to Rick Roll myself before I get to that cover - I haven't seen the original video in totality for a long time (though have seen segments of it way too often!). Love that they did that in the lead-up. I'll try to remember to check for the shorts before watching the main video.
I'll have to check out Adam's video for sure, either on or off channel.
The start is in reference to Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby's Got Back again, as you guessed. "Oh, my God, Becky, look at her butt. It's so big. She looks like one of those rap guy's girlfriends." I believe was the line, which prompted Austin and Tim into "She looks like a country boys girlfriend."
Your video was almost as much fun to watch as theirs, David. Much more informative, though. Nicely done, sir.
Absolutely forgot the second part of that line, but thanks for clarifying. Thank you so much for the compliment - I'm glad you enjoyed it. :-)
Oh, the one thing *I* saw that you missed was the NASTY thing Austin did with his tongue right at the very beginning when he says the line about "country boy's girlfriend." It's a very hillbilly/hick thing...and it's just perfect. :)
Yup, that went completely past me. It certainly fits his character there just right!
There is an interview with Chris Rupp (black cowboy hat) in which he says that this was his pet project. In summary, he said his sister had worked with a modeling agency and that's where the women were from. Since they didn't want to objectify the women, the only 'butts' are theirs. Austin choreographed the line dance. The man in the one-shoulder overalls is a friend of Rob's and co-hosts on Rob's channel (he's in other videos as well).
That's awesome - I didn't realise it was spurred on by him.
Rob is the perfect whistler.
He is seriously fantastic at it.
Generally, they have modeled the various sections of the video around the official video for each song (where one exists anyway). FifGen really had a vision for this video in that respect.
ETA: Since you're selectively listening to The Avid Indoorsmen podcast, you might find the one that VoicePlay joined them for movie trivia entertaining as well. It's from Sep-2020.
Having watching fragments of the originals to clarify my suspicions, I love what HF and Fifgen achieved with this one!
My goodness, thank you for that podcast recommendation! I listened to it a couple of days ago and I absolutely loved it!
Rob is one of the best whistlers out their...
For more, check out *Quarantine* or *Champagne Taste*
One steals a tune from elsewhere, butt both sets of lyrics are HF originals
I just noticed that, at the beginning, the table in front of Tim changes colors: bright white to grey and back. Interesting.
Austin's buckle is likely a bass. He and his gf are avid fishing enthusiasts. They've released several fish videos.
😊
Reacting to Queen live performances would be fab, such Somebody to Love at Montreal, or Live Aid....
Sounds like Chris Rupp is being a sort of bass fiddle at the beginning, much the way Tim generally does.
They do a great Johnny Cash, “Folsom Prison”
And “Rings of Fire” is good.
I appreciate the recommendations - thank you.
A cool tidbit: Layne from Voiceplay helped with the arrangement 😊
I didn't catch that until right at the end of the video, but I love that he was involved. It's obviously different from VP's work, but I do feel like I can hear a little of his style in there.
😂❤
Yup, that's about right! ;-)
If you are focussing on medleys try their Country Fried Pop Medley. It's a blast
Got it on the list for sure! Not really focussing on medleys as much as they're getting requested a lot as they are popular, but I'll get to it soon.
How do we get a Home Free Month ? *chuckle WI Fry Here for the HF but I am the type to dive into back catalogues so be fair I'll stay.
I don't know if a whole month is a good idea while I'm still building the channel, but I'm thinking I might do a week of the main groups some time soon - I have SO much back catalogue to get through!
They posted this video in celebration of April Fool's Day, and while the whole video is a "joke," they took the music itself absolutely seriously. And I can't help but respect that.
That is an excellent way to celebrate Apr 1st. And yes, it totally holds up as an amazing video apart from that, which so many such jokes done - love it.
Someone on what's app with a New York state area code and your picture attached wanted me to chat with them. I am assuming that this is not you since you are in Canada.
You are correct, but thank you for the heads-up.
