I'm going to try this now! I'm in TX and I have a ton I've been fighting in my 60 ft veggie garden. I'm sick of being tore up head to toe and ruining my seed rows. My carrot row is really messed up. I have used Dawn soap, Neem oil, Diatomaceous Earth, Cinnamon, Vinegar and not sure what else. I was just about to get my kitchen torch out and fry the stinging critters from Hades. Thank you!

It works very well. You might have to treat it twice but it will get them. If you don't want to use harsh chemicals it will do the job.

Im so glad for the reminder of this. Also, thank you for saying I dont need the dawn. I tried the other concochions on mounds outside of my garden and they didn't always work but smaller mounds it did. Also, sometimes the ants just moved. This did work when I used it in past years. Yay

I’ve used orange oil mixed with Garrett Juice (concentrate of compost tea, molasses and nutrients) and diluted in a gallon of water. Seems to work well for awhile but they end up coming back eventually. You just have to keep on them. I learned about it in Texas Organic Gardening by J. Howard Garrett. He suggests 2 parts Garrett Juice to 1 part citrus/orange oil, making a total of 2-6oz in a gallon and playing with the best concentration to kill the bugs but not burn foliage if used as a spray…works for squash bugs too. I’ve drenched small mounds in my raised beds. Fire ants don’t like molasses so I presume what doesn’t get killed directly will be chased off and repelled.

@@MyTexasYard I have them terrible in my raised beds this year- no mounds at all but there are millions of them in there and there is ALSO freakin termites in them too. Gonna try this but the beds are planted with some herbs and beans so hopefully it won’t damage them. I may do a lighter spray/soil drench and then in strategic spots where there are no plants poke a hole and pour it deeper. I have no idea where the mound is. I bought a different variety of D-limonine orange oil without surfactants (Medina has a surfactant) but I have Dr Bronners citrus Castile soap I’ll use. You have to have a surfactant or the oil won’t mix with water (same with neem)
      Wish me luck lol

I have used this for fire ants for several years. It does work. A new mound may form a few feet away but it will be a fraction of the size of the original mound. Just treat it too. It is a good idea to follow that with a good dose of a compost tea to restore the soil biology that was wiped out by the orange oil. I had a fire ant mound come up at the base of a tomato plant and the orange oil killed the plant but I just replaced it.

The dish soap is meant to act as an emulsifier so that the oil can mix with water. However, the product you are using seems to already contain an emulsifier/surfactant, so yes dish soap is not necessary.

that's a good point and a great question about this product. I wonder. In the video, the mound was vacated without dawn. But then again, in every video I've seen with a DIY solution, someone show a vacated mound. Diatomaceous Earth vids, soap vids, vinegar vids, Neem oil vids, Cinnamon vids, etc, etc. However, you gotta go with the actual studies by your county extension office wherein they conduct real research and scientifically determine whether the queen was killed or or, and how far away X number of new mounds just replaced the dying mound in a matter of days. At this point, I stuck a water hose in a mound and left it there for 10 minutes and guess what - the mound was vacated! And guess what - a few days later there was a smaller mound nearby. (and smaller doesn't necessarily mean most of the original ants were killed - they all start small, and they build and develop as they can) Bottom line: if you harass and knock-over and dump stuff on a mound enough - they'll get the hint and move. Heck, I've seen them vacate just because they built in a path where our riding mower tires kept smashing their mound. Just means you're fighting them forever.
