  • This is the best and safest method I have found for killing fire ants in the garden.
    There is no need for soaps, poisons, or complicated techniques. Simple = dead ants! www.amazon.com/Medina-Degreas...

    I’ve been using orange oil in my garden beds for several years and have never seen damage to any of my plants. I add a good squirt of Dawn to the mixture.

    Great ideas, I’ve tried them, both work but orange oil is simplest and efficient, what is best to use as emulsifier? I’ve used dawn dish washing soap not sure if it’s best.

    • @MyTexasYard
      @MyTexasYard  3 місяці тому

      There is no need for an emulsifier. For some reason, that myth got spread and now everyone thinks dish soap is a good idea. It’s just poison.

    Fellow Texan here. Elderly mother. A caring person with Jesus in my heart. Trying to get some ants out of my veggie garden area. Shame on you for upsetting me to no end for a moment there with the 'boiling water' stunt.
    I figure it was just a stunt for educational purposes, since you appear to be okay, and you wouldn't be --- so you are forgiven and thanked after all. I was just fixin' to do the boiling water again, but since I have some balance issues, and since I saw you here, I ain't doin' that.
    Next time somebody drives me to town, I'll get some orange oil. Seems like the safest thing I came across so far today, while already looking for something easier than boiling water. I have some other household items on hand for remedies, but I have concerns about trying them and I don't have any sugar anyway for one of them.

    What are the odds that the ants would've vacated the mound if you had created a volcano with your stick and poured a gallon of just water right into it? Especially if you did a couple of applications like you said you sometimes do. Unless you get the queen, they're going to move one way or another if they think they chose a bad spot (where they're in a walking path, or a cart/wheel path, or the receiving end of a garden hose shoved down into the hole for 5 minutes, 2-3x a day, over a couple of days. I don't know the answer but I'd like to see you re-do the experiment with the same stick prodding, but just regular water, flooding the mound a few times in a day. Then come back & do it the next day, if needed.

    I did the boiling water. I boiled and dumped a few kettle full on a hive. Next, morning the ground around the nest was full of dead red ants. They carried out all the dead ants from the next and took them outside. Then, it was business as usual within the nest. Didn't really work.

    Are you able to plant in that soil after the treatment?

    • @MyTexasYard
      @MyTexasYard  Рік тому

      I have not seen any lasting effects on the soil. After it gets diluted by watering or rain fall I believe it is safe to plant in. That being said, always use sparingly close to plants.

    I used and OrangeOil + Mollasses mixture to treat my ants (5 gallon, 10oz and 5oz).
    One large ant pile swallowed 3 gallons no problem.
    Three days later I am seeing new tiny mounds pop up with some activity.
    Maybe I didn't get all the queens.
