@kamil arshad Yes, Sand can be used and it has a lot more surface area than K1, the only drawback is you need to have a better aeration system. For further inquiry, search for fluidized sand bio filter. There are a lot of research papers on the numbers and quantity of sand air and the stocking density of fish.
