This is perfect timing!! I'm moving into my new house Monday and was looking for tips and ideas on what and how I should clean! Thank you so much for this! Can't wait for part 3!!!
Perfect. I'm moving in about 3 weeks and this video helps point me in the right direction. Most of it is common sense, but getting some direction on the order in which things should be done is what I needed. Thank you. ❤
So, I've search this type of video 4 months ago when I was moving in my new apartment, but I didn't find anything so explicitly and I've decided to do my way... I was keeping in mind that all has to be very clean. Now when I saw the title of your video I was very curious about your way to do it and I found that I was doing the right thing myself and I'm happy! The bathroom goes first for my, it has to be very hygienic.
Here in Switzerland, when one moves house or apartment, you have to clean it from top to bottom after you move out - no matter if they are going to do some re-decorating or not! You meet up with the landlord and go from room to room and they check if everything is clean. And I mean clean. So basically, you move into a squickie clean home. I do give the kitchen and the bathroom a once over. You just do not know if it was cleaned Melissa style or not. The later probably. But for me def. the kitchen. All those cabinets.....
Great video Melissa! One thing that was missed in the bathroom is the exhaust fan. While you mention vacuuming the the outer cover, it is extremely important to remove the cover and vacuum the fan blades. It is amazing how much dust accumulates up there and it does become a fire hazard if it is not cleaned. Doing so on a regular basis also helps control the dust in the bathroom. I clean mine monthly because I'm OCD lol but it should be done quarterly or bi-annually at the least.
You missed that it cuts down on doctor's visits. The accumulated bacteria and germs that attach to that dust can be very harmful to children as well as the elderly. And especially those of us who suffer from extreme indoor and outdoor allergies
THE BATHROOM IS A MUST THAT HAS TO BE CLEANED FIRST!!! If I walk in a home or restaurant that has a dirty bathroom I DO NOT want anything they will be serving me. Knowing that the employees or hostess are coming from using a bathroom that looks and smells nasty or from a truck stop, I can't even imagine eating or pitting anything in my mouth knowing they use that place and cook our food.
Hey Mellisa, I've followed your advise for over a year and recently took a maintenance job at a fast food establishment. The area manager and owner are very happy to see the improvement in the appearance of the property in just a few weeks... It's like a Zen Riddle, one person says its a waste of time to clean while upper management requires the filth to be dealt with in a proper manor... For the question of the week: My vote is the kitchen where food is prepared and stored.
Thank you so very much for all of your videos. I finally got a job cleaning vacant apartments for move in and I am super excited! ALL of your videos and tips and been so extremely helpful :)) 💋💋
I love your videos! I’ve learned so much about how to deep clean and how to help keep our space tidy. Recently, my spouse and I became new home owners, but (shortly after) learned that the previous owner had a pretty significant problem with mice. Repairs to the home, traps, and two cats have helped to eliminate the mouse problem but we are still dealing with the aftermath of clean up. I was hoping you might have some tips for safely and effectively cleaning cabinets as well as applicances like ovens/stoves. I’ve seen your videos on typical cleaning of these areas; however, (given the unique health hazards presented by vermin) we’d appreciate any tips to help get our new home back to the standard level of cleanliness we’ve grown accustom. Thanks!
Enjoyed this video and looking forward to the finished product. As for cleaning the bathroom or the kitchen, that is a tough one but I think I would go with the bathroom. I am the only one who uses the kitchen and I like having a clean bathroom when guests come.
Watching this makes me happy to be renting in Australia. When moving out most people employ what's known as a bond cleaner to make sure their house/townhouse/unit/apartment is properly clean upon vacating. They do everything and if the property manager/landlord isn't satisfied they have to come back for free to fix whatever they may have missed. So when the new tenants move in they can expect it to be fully cleaned and sanitised. But I'm unsure of what people do when selling their home. I imagine they would do similar. But in a weird way I enjoy cleaning so I probably wouldn't mind too much. Also your friend is lucky to move into a place with laundry machines and a fridge and microwave!
Yeah, in the US, the house or apartment usually comes with all major appliances already installed. I like the idea of the bond cleaner. I usually hire someone like that (a maid), myself, but a lot of people here don't, and that's gross.
This is really awful of me but I never trust anyone else's cleaning. Even if a place looks immaculate, I have to clean and disinfect it myself before I move in. It's not clean until it's Squirly clean. This way I know it has been properly sanitized.
Squirl Oh, same here, for sure. I need for the previous tenants/property manager to hire professional cleaners, and then I need to clean on top of it once I get my keys. I bring all of my cleaning supplies straight away and get to work.
bathroom for sure! in am I only sometimes find my self making something in kitchen... or really at anytime of day bc I'm not that much of a cook. every am though I am in that bathroom. it makes me less stressful when it's clean!
11 minuites in to this video and ive checked my skirting boards and cleaned my food cupboard out. Watching you always make me feel like cleaning !!! Thank u from England x
My kitchen is the room I would want someone to clean. The cleaning list would be the following: stove/oven, exhaust fan, light fixtures, fridge/freezer, wash the walls, floors, windows, blinds, and curtains, and clean out all the cupboards and drawers as well as wash the cabinet and drawer fronts. Sounds like a lot but in reality my kitchen is very small--I just don't like cleaning it but I do this thorough cleaning once a month.
I am so glad I'm not the only one who does this monthly. My friends tease me about it all the time but they always say how much they love being in my kitchen.
Plz show me how to get start when moving in a new home. Not just cleaning, but I talking u r standing there & boxes r surrounding u & u have no idea where to start. What systems do I put in place right away? How do I keep them going?? Gonna be moving in a month & ive just begun to get my butt in gear wth clean/organizing. I dnt k w what took me so long lol!
that brown around the washing machine door is mold because people don't realize that front load washing machines need to be wiped dry after each use and the door needs to be left open to allow air drying time. moral of the story.....front load only looks cool....stick to the top load.
I know this isn't suitable for the cms channel but can you do a morning routine over on your personal channel. P.s. Your cleaning tips help me sooooo much!!
Stovetop drip pans sometimes be so dirty or have stuff burned on such that it's cheaper and more effective to just get replacements. They can often be gotten for around $5 each from stores like Home Depot.
I own a cleaning company and I prefer to clean the kitchen over bathroom, my worst enemy is a stand up shower, with sliding glass doors and NOO HAND SPRAYer!!! You should do a video on a shower like that, they are such a pain!!!
I moved into an older apartment recently. The previous tenant was a heavy smoker, which I didn't notice at first but after a few showers the faint smell/yellow wall stains started to appear. I washed all the walls using bleach powder when I moved in, and the stains appeared after I had already done the walls. There are also other smokers in the building (they have grandfather clauses that allows it) and it occasionally wafts through my vents. It doesn't really bother me, but I would love some tips on how to get the leftover stains/smell out and how to deal with the vent thing (I've been using dryer sheets but if there's a better way I'd love to know)
If I could only have one place clean it would be the bathroom! I get disgusted when I'm around a dirty bathroom, especially the ones you can tell aren't clean before you walk in because of the smell! 😷
hi melissa. i love your videos, it has really changed how i clean many things. i have a question. if someone is moving into a new place where the previous owner smoked, how would i get rid of the smell?
I'd rather have a clean kitchen. Also I wish you had this kind of video up last year before I moved into my new place. haha I have been watching your video for only about a month now. and I have been turning into a neat freak! haha but it's good. I love the Dyson Absolute! And this video is great, perfect time too... Because I just got another condo... In Miami this time! Great video Melissa, nice shootin' Chad!
Oh its great, I still have my place in T.O! But I'm expanding my horizons and if I can stay warm and do business I'll take it! Lol, stay warm! :) Thanks for the help.
Hi there. I've been trying to get into a cleaning routine for so, so long. It would be great if you could add a list of cleaning products you use? Or even a chart showing your routine I can perhaps learn from? I'd honestly appreciate it big time. It feels a bit overwhelming in all honesty. I hate a dirty house but I always feel like I'm behind on jobs! Also, perhaps a video on affordable cleaning products? I love the hoover you suggest but $200 is almost half my budget for the entire month gone! x
hi. I'm new to your channel. I love it!! I moved into a new place. the tub is very dirty. greys in color. just wondering hiw to clean it. I read easy off is good to use. what do you suggest?
Hey love your channel - this video is very helpful as I am moving into a new home next week! Have a question on the white vinegar , is the one you use 5% or 6% , I have been told 6% is recommended for cleaning but I am struggling to find a 6% here in the UK Thanks

If I HAVE to choose just one... the kitchen. I spend a lot of time in there cooking and even just hanging out lol A messy kitchen would drive me crazy. The bathroom I always maintain clean as it is used, so it wouldn't even get that dirty.
If I had to choose between a clean bathroom or kitchen, I would choose the bathroom. You have to be clean. I mean that is where you brush your teeth, shower and all the other stuff. The kitchen is important but you can always go out for food until the room is cleaned. Love all your video's! My daughter and I watch them all...Thank you for the information...we have made our own cleaners from watching your show! Happy 2016!
kitchen! I'm a crazy kitchen cleaner! don't get me wrong I'd like my bathroom to be just as clean but it really really turns me off when a kitchen is even a tiny bit dirty
This was a hard choice because both are as equally important. My first thought was the bathroom due to the activity, but then the kitchen gets a lot of traction to and this is where you are cooking, and we all know that the kitchen must be sanitized daily like the bathroom. I am betwixted on this one. I stand with both are as equally important to be cleaned daily🤔
In a new home bathroom cleaned first. In a home that I have lived in for awhile I can't choose one over the other. Bathroom and kitchen are both equally important to keep clean.
Hello Mellisa, I have a question for you. How to clean toys (like electronic, plastics, teddy bears and barbie dolls) I usually wipe them or put it in a pillow cover and was it in the washing machines, but they get dirty in seconds. plus my baby pputs it in his mouth so I am afraid to use chemicals. please help!
If you can open them up to the inside, just clean them yourself. :) If they open to the outside, cannot or must not be opened, get a professional window cleaner to do it for you.
is it usual in Canada for people to sell their washing machine and dryer with their house cos I'd sure as heck wouldn't want to use any ones washing machine!
+Ann marie White It depends, if the unit is being used as a selling feature it can be used as a negotiation tool for the buyer. They could argue the unit is old and needs replacement to lower the price, or if it's new the seller might offer to leave it for a higher price. Both prices wouldn't be the full cost of a new unit so it benefits both the buyer and the seller either way.
In the US, sellers leave their washer and dryer most of the time. When we tried to sell our house, the buyers were happy that we were leaving ours there. they were quite old too. The buyers were happy to cross off two less things to purchase for their new house.
I would choose the kitchen if I had to pick one. Bathroom is easier to deep clean when there's things in there. To deep clean a kitchen after you're all moved in is going to turn out to be a lot more work.
Question, I have those spiral burners on my stove, there is something burnt on them and they smoke every time I turn them on. Not sure what it is as they've smoked since I started renting here about a year ago. I've taken them off and tried soaking in hot water, didn't work. Tried an all purpose cleaner. I replaced the drip pans. I've looked on Pinterest and search CMS youtube (as there's videos for everything here) with no luck. Any ideas? Please help Melissa, Chad, or any followers.
Neither room. I am a total control freak when it comes to cleaning and I will not impose my way on anyone who would clean for me, so I'd rather do it myself. That said, what do you mean, spray and wipe a bathroom before you move in and use it? I have always used a bucket, soap, Clorox, hot water, and rags with texture to them. I used to be an apartment building superintendent, and I used these same methods when prepping vacancies. The spraying and wiping are fine after I've done the initial cleaning.
+TheCupcakes3087 Hi, I buy microfiber from a dollar store, Amazon Basics (a great value), big box stores such as Costco or Sams. These towels are becoming popular and inexpensive. There is also a website theragcompany who also sells on Amazon. Hope this helps.
These are great tips! Great video!! And kudos for mentioning that it's best to maybe just get a new toilet seat. They're cheap! The last thing I'd want is to use someone else's toilet seat 🤢
This is perfect timing!! I'm moving into my new house Monday and was looking for tips and ideas on what and how I should clean! Thank you so much for this! Can't wait for part 3!!!

Going through your old videos cause I’m getting ready to move so this is awesome

Charlene Bingham calm down. It doesn’t have to be FIRST! A clean, sanitized bathroom is 100% a must!! She did it second. Who cares.
Amen to that, bathroom are already a nasty place as it is.

Thank you Melisa, a perfect video, as always. Very helpful. I cannot tell you how much I love your channel.
What about cleaning out kitchen & bathroom cupboards? Even in a new home it's important
Thank you I’m moving for the first time at the end of September and I’m so excited

Great tips, thank you. Do you have any videos on how to clean mold and mildew around the shower tiles. Need ideas for a heavy duty type of job. :)
Hi Melissa can u plz upload a video on how to clean kitchen towels.
I own a cleaning company and I prefer to clean the kitchen over bathroom, my worst enemy is a stand up shower, with sliding glass doors and NOO HAND SPRAYer!!! You should do a video on a shower like that, they are such a pain!!!
Yes I have one too and those stand up showers omg I understand what u mean
Love your videos! Can you do a video on how to remove oil stains from a concrete garage floor?
I moved into an older apartment recently. The previous tenant was a heavy smoker, which I didn't notice at first but after a few showers the faint smell/yellow wall stains started to appear. Thanks

hi melissa. i love your videos, it has really changed how i clean many things. i have a question. if someone is moving into a new place where the previous owner smoked, how would i get rid of the smell?
Hi Melissa!!!
I have a random question. So what do u do with all ur dirty or wet microfibre cloths until u have enough to make a load?????
Thank u
+melissa bob Hey there! I let them air dry, place them in a bucket and when I have enough to launder (plus tea towels), I run through a load.
The kitchen or the bathroom is a tough question. Both are equally important to us.
I'd rather have a clean kitchen. Also I wish you had this kind of video up last year before I moved into my new place. haha I have been watching your video for only about a month now. and I have been turning into a neat freak! haha but it's good. Thank you for inspiring me to clean my space and keep it clean.
+Kelly Gould You are most welcome!
i always have to have a clean bathroom no matter what as if need be can eat out but also a clean kitchen is good :)

how do you clean your baseboards. can you please show a description of how to do that.
I just want to ask where should i put the old things or cloths or dresses if i don't have some space in my dorm?
How do you clean a basement?
can you soak that lint tray in any of your home cleaning solutions?
Mel, you know how to take apart the oven to clean the front door? I got schtuff on the inside of the glass. Yep.
Great video
Hello, How do i find part 1 of your moving series?
If I had to choose between a clean bathroom or kitchen, I would choose the bathroom. You have to be clean. I mean that is where you brush your teeth, shower and all the other stuff. The kitchen is important but you can always go out for food until the room is cleaned. Love all your video's! My daughter and I watch them all...Thank you for the information...we have made our own cleaners from watching your show! Happy 2016!
+Terri Mayle Glad to hear the kids are involved! Thank you and happy 2016 too!
kitchen! I'm a crazy kitchen cleaner! don't get me wrong I'd like my bathroom to be just as clean but it really really turns me off when a kitchen is even a tiny bit dirty
Right away I thought kitchen! But the idea of a dirty bathroom, gross! I can't choose!!! Lol
Me too! They are both a pain to clean.
Love your videos 👏👏👏👏

In a new home bathroom cleaned first. In a home that I have lived in for awhile I can't choose one over the other. Bathroom and kitchen are both equally important to keep clean.
Love the video. But, I would set up kitchen and then bathroom before doing anything else. :)
bathroom. I used to have it done. house just feels cleaner if the bathroom is clean!!
Exactly what I needed! Thanks Mel! 😄
clean bathroom please! i can always go out for dinner, breakfast and lunch!😜
For sure my kitchen to be cleaned.
Any suggestions on cleaning the outside of the Windows if you live in a higher area of a building.
If you can open them up to the inside, just clean them yourself. :)
If they open to the outside, cannot or must not be opened, get a professional window cleaner to do it for you.
great info thanks
tough questions as i want both clean and tidy.
is it usual in Canada for people to sell their washing machine and dryer with their house cos I'd sure as heck wouldn't want to use any ones washing machine!
Yes, at least in Western Canada.
+1217WICKED How about using an SOS pad or something with a superfine abrasion that could remove the build up?
Neither room. I am a total control freak when it comes to cleaning and I will not impose my way on anyone who would clean for me, so I'd rather do it myself. That said, what do you mean, spray and wipe a bathroom before you move in and use it? I have always used a bucket, soap, Clorox, hot water, and rags with texture to them. I used to be an apartment building superintendent, and I used these same methods when prepping vacancies. The spraying and wiping are fine after I've done the initial cleaning.
Where do you buy your microfiber cloths from?
+TheCupcakes3087 Hi, I buy microfiber from a dollar store, Amazon Basics (a great value), big box stores such as Costco or Sams. These towels are becoming popular and inexpensive. There is also a website theragcompany who also sells on Amazon. Hope this helps.
Thank you!!!
How to keep clean the cemented floors?
Thank you both of you ! You re not all from english speaking country. ;-)
You forgot that the dryer vent should be cleaned of lint. Replacing the vent tube is a good idea, too.
I tried the links to part 1 & 2 and the links were broken. Please help me get the links. Thank you.
These are great tips! Great video!!
And kudos for mentioning that it's best to maybe just get a new toilet seat. They're cheap! The last thing I'd want is to use someone else's toilet seat 🤢
I use an electric leaf blower to clean, is that ok? Lol
Don’t the seller clean the apartments before handing it over in Canada?
How do you clean your baseboards?
Bathroom!! I definitely dont like to clean the bathroom. P.S. Lucas's condo looks really nice! :)
