I love how they used Hoodoo in this movie. They didn't get it confused with Voodoo like most people and they showed that it's a neutral belief system. It's not good or bad, it just depends on who's trying to use it. They also didn't give too much information on the system itself so the practice stays closed. Very creepy but respectful. Me like.

@@paulnewmo “Hoodoo” and “voodoo” may sound the same, but the terms are related opposites. Both hoodoo and voodoo are widely practiced and share similar elements and roots in Africa. Both are also products of mixed beliefs that include pagan traditions, ancient worship, and elements of European religions. However, the main difference between hoodoo and voodoo is that the latter is actually an existing religion practiced by people, while the former is considered folk magic. Voodoo, as a religion, is an organized institution with established practices like religious representatives or leaders, teachings, and religious services or rituals. Hoodoo, as folk magic, lacks this foundation and organization. Voodoo invokes the power of the loas in the African gods and deities; however, hoodoo practitioners invoke the loas by using Catholic saints. Voodoo is practiced by non-Roman Catholics, while hoodoo’s practitioners are often Roman Catholics who use both the African concept of gods and the religious saints of Catholicism. Hoodoo practitioners are also followers of spiritualism. The specific term ascribed to a voodoo practitioner is a Vodouisant, while hoodoo practitioners are often referred to as root doctors or healers. A hoodoo practitioner often sees hoodoo as a sort of personal power that can help them or other people through their knowledge of herbs, minerals, animal parts, bodily fluids, and possessions. The magic can be used based on one’s inclinations, desires, interests, and habits. Hoodoo and its practitioners empower themselves by accessing the gods and other supernatural forces in order to bring improvement or decline to a person’ life. With this variety of knowledge and power, a practitioner can help a person in all aspects of life, including luck, love, evil, and restraining enemies. Voodoo is the “original religion”, while hoodoo is the result of religious persecution and suppression. Hoodoo developed by adopting and blending some foreign beliefs and religion to hide its African origins, which were considered pagan and unacceptable in the society largely dominated by Christians. Aside from being a religion, voodoo is also a culture and a way of life. Hoodoo often specializes only in magic powers and the benefits that the magic can bring. Hoodoo can also be practiced as a hobby, an economic income, or a charity act. There is also a difference in the places of influence of both voodoo and hoodoo. Voodoo is popular and thrives in former French colonies like Mississippi and Louisiana, while hoodoo is more poplar in the Southern part of America. Additionally, hoodoo was brought to the New World by African slaves, while voodoo arrived through Haiti, a former French colony. Voodoo, though “purer” and more ancient, is often compared to hoodoo. Voodoo encompasses a variety of fields in society, such as culture, philosophy, art and music, heritage, language, medicine, justice, spirituality, and power. Hoodoo, on the other hand, is just a fraction of all this, and is also more focused on the power and spiritual side than anything else.

@@m.g7408surprisingly there is some truth to it. I'm not from a culture that practices it but some other Caribbean cultures practice something called "obeyah" and it's a type of dark magic. Haitians who have migrated to the Bahamas have bought it here. It's not prevalent but seemingly it is strange magic. Voodoo, Hoodoo, Obeyah etc they all deal with killing, sacrifices and messing with spirits in some way.
Omg! I am sooo happy you are reviewing this film. As a Black woman who enjoys horror, I always enjoy when films like this make it to the screen (or streaming service lol). The all Black casts was exciting too.
In Jamaica we have something similar to this but we call it Obeyah the Haitians have it too but I've heard of being this horrific. They usual just make people have bad luck and they don't live in groups they'll live by themselves in woodland areas or in a community. The part where they use animal parts to help people see or talk reminds of the Jonkunuh dance where they behead animals to summon spirits and people would get possessed and start walking up walls and twisting their bodies even the beheaded animals would still be dancing during the whole act.
How symbolic of this film. You can never forget the past, if you truly want to move forward into the future. In Santeria and many sects of the Ifa religion, you are first encouraged to look into your family past in order to set your future paths in the religion. Ancestors have a way to guide you. Not just in Ifa, Santeria, Balo, Regla de la orishas, etc, but many religions, cultural customs of ancestor worship forces you to look into the past to know your true self and set up a path that is right for you. This movie has so many tiny hints and bits, which you mentioned (and I love you for that), of this ancestor guidance and setting up a new path in life. Also you can't never ignore your ancestors for too long. You are part of your family lineage. Another added note, as others had pointed out this film needs a sequel. Interesting note from movie: The son could regain a hand using a boogity and attach a new limb. 🤔The father regained his hudou abilities from his past. His father always knew his son has the gift but the son wanted to forget it all. You can go afar as possible from your past, but your ancestors always find a way and your destiny is unfolded to that what you ought to be.

Hi foundflix, i am a fan of this channel for a while now and i wanted to recommend an amazing movie called “climax”. it’s about a dance troupe who’s party turns dark when they find their punch was spiked with lsd, i know it’s not your typical horror with ghosts and such, but it’s a mind bending thriller and i would love to hear you explore the themes and break down the movie!

Loretta Devine is like the Black Meryl Streep tbh. She’s been in Black movies for decades and is always amazing. Comedy, bf drama, horror, and even acting as if she has a illness (she played Dr. Webber’s wife who got Alzheimer’s which she did very well, per usual lol). But yeah Loretta Devine has been a very prominent “Mom” or older woman/aunt in great Black movies and shows for decades. Sad that she doesn’t have enough mainstream awards especially with how diverse she is!
This movie was soooooo good. Shows how magic can also be used for good but watch out, it can also be used for bad or even come back to you. Karma I guess they would call it!! What a gem, this movie was.
The magic practiced in the film was Hoodoo, not Voodoo or Vodun which is a religion. Hoodoo is African American folk magic, not a religion. Great review. Made me want to see the actual film.
Great summary (as usual) - would just point out that while there are some aspects that deal with racism, this flick's more of an examination of classism/prejudice

This movie has some commentary on the class distinctions among Black people but I don't think it was handled well. Loretta Devine's portrayal of the main bad is yikes even with the explanation/twist about who she is. Also, Vodun or Voodoo is actually neutral with it being able to be used for good or bad but here it's a stereotypically "evil."
Yeah it was really the modernization of pop culture which gave voodoo the evil stereo but at the same time yes my grandmother used to practice magic she would always tell me with blood magic their is a good and a evil but sometimes calling to the good you bring the evil that it is best not to practice blood magic unless you are taught properly their could be consequences swear it shakes me to the core I am not one of those people who do it

This movie hits hard As a black person There’s so many aspects to this movie that speaks volumes And I’m sure other communities go through the same aspects of this But the black community is probably the most divided. It’s so rare For Black people to look back When they (leave the hood) aka become successful. For some reason they don’t leave a legacy. To help guide the next generation to success. And a lot of Black people find that they lose their identity of being black. And giving it up for being successful. Like you can’t do both? We’re so hateful and mean to each other most times. We look down at each other all the time. That House slave and field slave dynamic is still real. This movie It’s a great look into these type of problems. Reminds us Black people and also help Other identities to understand these type of issues

as my grandfather said i aint ever met a man so disrespectful until i met my own kind.
I actually gagged out loud when he shoved that spike back in. Jesus H Christ, I would've just run for it, no way am I shoving a spike in me!
The only lesson here is that you should never (after getting away from it) visit parents that believe in dark magic, even for a funeral.
Especially if you haven't seen them for god knows how long......as that pretty much says that you do not care. I don't care what another says in order not to appear bad in anothers eyes. If you ran away from home and avoided whatever odd parent.........you don't give a rats ass. Plus, what would be the point to attend their funeral?!? Most don't even realize that there is way more to funerals than sitting in front of the person that is deceased.
Especially if its in a movie where all bs is allowed and its not bound by natural law.
I wonder if this couple have beef with the father
@@m.g7408surprisingly there is some truth to it. I'm not from a culture that practices it but some other Caribbean cultures practice something called "obeyah" and it's a type of dark magic. Haitians who have migrated to the Bahamas have bought it here. It's not prevalent but seemingly it is strange magic. Voodoo, Hoodoo, Obeyah etc they all deal with killing, sacrifices and messing with spirits in some way.
"They say this is a big rich town,
I just come from the poorest part..."
Omg! I am sooo happy you are reviewing this film. As a Black woman who enjoys horror, I always enjoy when films like this make it to the screen (or streaming service lol). The all Black casts was exciting too.
Ikr, Haitian and West African culture have so much potential for interesting concepts in their folklore. This was fun.
Yup we good at that🤙🏼🇭🇹🇭🇹🤙🏼
In Jamaica we have something similar to this but we call it Obeyah the Haitians have it too but I've heard of being this horrific.
Sure they do.

I really hope your channel grows more and more for many years to come. Don't know what l would do if you stop making your videos love your channel to bits. 🥰
As someone from Kentucky I like when there is movies based in Kentucky or about Kentucky. And that was one scary/cool movie in my opinion.
The part with the ritual and the man having the goat eyes was super creepy in my opinion.
Sir, imma need you to do a movie called Killer High, I absolutely loved that movie and I’d love to hear your take on it! I’ve been sitting here binge watching the channel and you are doing the work of heroes here. I cannot stand getting emotionally invested in a movie just for it to wind up infuriating me, it is exhausting, and with your videos I don’t waste any time on the bad movies that slowly take pieces of my soul with all their badness!
It's pretty brave for a 2020 filmmaker to show that everyone can show prejudice. And Voodoo is something that should be used more often in horror. It's a very cool religion
Hoodoo* it's not completely different but it is not the same as voodoo.
@@KupcakeKitten wrong voodoo is a religion hoodoo is a magical practice used in voodoo worship but you can practice it without subscribing to voodoo

I know what you mean. When I watched Terminator Salvation or Redemption or whatever, when the actors talked, they had bright white teeth, like they got them bleached before that day of filming. Teeth aren't supposed to reflect light like that naturally. Took me out of the movie each time.
Wow my brain completely skipped over the “white” and I thought the fact that her teeth were straight pulls you out 🤦🏾♀️

It's not an idea per say, there is colorism amongst many black people. In my country people will treat me differently because I'm a lighter tone.
Happens all over Latin America too
Where You from??
Jamaica
Exactly all white people are white but black people are so called "different"
Me as a light skinned black person visiting Arkansas. Im treated different and it’s terrible
Where can we watch this one?
Also, do a "Endings Explained" for the Spanish film "The Orphanage"
YES! Please. Wonderful movie 💚
Looks like you can rent it here on UA-cam, on busy, on Amazon prime, and also on Apple TV. :) it’s all rental but this movie looks worth it!
I remember watching this movie with my parents a while ago, and I honestly think about it a lot lmao. We thought it was really good, especially the actor who played the hoodoo woman (forgot her name-). My dad had even said they couldn’t have picked a better actor for her.
Loretta Devine is her name
Loretta Devine is like the Black Meryl Streep tbh. She’s been in Black movies for decades and is always amazing. Comedy, bf drama, horror, and even acting as if she has a illness (she played Dr. Webber’s wife who got Alzheimer’s which she did very well, per usual lol). But yeah Loretta Devine has been a very prominent “Mom” or older woman/aunt in great Black movies and shows for decades. Sad that she doesn’t have enough mainstream awards especially with how diverse she is!
"I can put you up, I can put you down! Turn you sideways and spin you around!" - Eloise; I love that quote!
I just watched this tonight. 7.5 out of 10. Can you do the movie Virus? Please? I just love it, it's basic AF but please!!!
This reminds me of the film Skelton Key. Looks good👍🏾

You've sold me on this movie, even though I've watched the full review I will watch it. It reminds me a bit of The Serpent and the Rainbow.
Great summary (as usual) - would just point out that while there are some aspects that deal with racism, this flick's more of an examination of classism/prejudice
Great? The title says ending explained… horrible video.
The boogity-bang-bang-the beat, said a hip hop body rock.....
Couldn't help it man, you kept saying boogity(which is hilarious) so I had to.

as much as i love horror and black fronted media and films, im tired of only seeing movies with entirely black casts when it’s time to make a movie about racism and pain and trauma. how hard is it to make a happy lighthearted movie with a fully black cast/production team?

I feel the same way. I’d love to see a cast of black people in a lovely movie filled with happiness😍
Glad you are doing spell, I find it fairly underrated
This movie has some commentary on the class distinctions among Black people but I don't think it was handled well. Loretta Devine's portrayal of the main bad is yikes even with the explanation/twist about who she is. Also, Vodun or Voodoo is actually neutral with it being able to be used for good or bad but here it's a stereotypically "evil."
Yeah it was really the modernization of pop culture which gave voodoo the evil stereo but at the same time yes my grandmother used to practice magic she would always tell me with blood magic their is a good and a evil but sometimes calling to the good you bring the evil that it is best not to practice blood magic unless you are taught properly their could be consequences swear it shakes me to the core I am not one of those people who do it
If you have to mutilate a living thing for magic.. It's not neutral..
Introspection is painful, but worth it..
@@truthseeksme9994 you don’t mutilate anything. Hoodoo is basically like shamanism or an animistic work. You use herbs in hoodoo you don’t mutilate any living thing to heal or for magic. But when they mean it’s neutral you can cast spells and curses on someone, the power is neutral. It can be used to heal or destroy basically. The movie just furthers propaganda that it’s wicked
@@jamieyoung9206 so animal bones aren't used correct? Nor are animal parts used at all?
@@truthseeksme9994 How much do you actually know about this? I'd suspect very little, yet here you are passive-aggressively critiquing it, almost like the main characters in the movie...weird.

I've been wanting a breakdown of this movie! I love me some FoundFlix!
This movie hits hard
As a black person
There’s so many aspects to this movie that speaks volumes
And I’m sure other communities go through the same aspects of this
But the black community is probably the most divided.
It’s so rare For Black people to look back
When they (leave the hood) aka become successful.
Agreed and the expectation of how you should be as a certain race like it defines you instead of your own behavior
Are these lyrics to a song or something
@@thunderhorse6666

I don't think having a identify built on race is healthy it will only lead to unification of that race and separation of the others
