@Victoria Strauss yeah i don't know about that. I'm thinking about books like 'After' where toxic relationships and people with some serious issues are full on romanticized... Obviously characters don't have to be perfect, that would be boring, but (heavy) issues should be solved or at least brought up imo. However, to each their own ofc :)

Ngl I like the cover of the movie, if it's a good one, example LOTR, my copy is all three books put together so it's easier to bring with me, and it has an image of the Nazgul on the front. It looks super cool and I love it. If it's a bad adaptation or the cover is screaming about the movie, then it's annoying.
I had to listen to the audios for this series because I HATED the Bella my mind created. Like I wanted to stab her with a fork. I don't think I've ever disliked a character more but at the same time, I wanted to know what all the hype was about.
10000% - Book covers with shirtless men + reading on public transport or in front of my boyfriend is a recipe for embarrassment I hate it like pllssss just make the cover simple hahaha
There should at least always be a second edition of the book with a normal/non embarassing cover Because I cannot bring myself to buy a book with a shirtless man on it and then risk for my parents to see it😭
i’m so glad you pointed out misogyny in books, especially from the girl characters. one of my favorite parts in the deal was hannah calling a girl a floozy or something and garrett’s like “she could actually be really smart” like THANK YOU!! 😭👏🏽
My biggest pet peeve is when the author keeps mentioning how short the heroine is. The hating game is one of my favorite books but I was very annoyed on how they kept mentioning how “small” Lucy was like okay we get it she’s short.
Christina Lauren Love and Other Words: o-o (the writing style was amazing, but the plot was a little off. It got me buying more Christina Lauren Books tho)
Insta-love is the wooorst. It's not believable, there's no angst, and it makes the romance between the characters seem totally bizarre for the rest of the book.
13:09 "I am an adult who can distinguish between fiction and reality" YES QUEEN MORE OF THAT. I just don't like it when people hate and cancel each other for reading a book saying "oh you're reading this == you advocate for THAT" like please just let people live their own lives in peace
At the same time though, often those types of books do romanticize toxic behavior. It’s good as a reader to be able to distinguish the difference between fiction and reality as she said, but recommending books like that is really harmful and adds to that toxic culture
For example, when a trope is an illegal/immoral age gap, even just recommending that sort of book puts it in the hands of impressionable people who read about it through a romanticized lens which then adds to grooming culture
yea i understand what ur saying but most the time it’s the reader that’s romanticizing the stuff and not the actual book. but there’s not rly anyway to prevent ppl from reading it.
@@miaeditscoolshi Well it’s the culture of it. Like even if the author makes it clear that it’s not really okay, if they still build a romance around it, it is being romanticized. Which just adds to that culture in real life, which is always harmful
ikr!! Also i feel like why does everyone expect the main characters to be the perfect human being?! like is anybody ever perfect? In reality everybody has character flaws so when its done in books, its actually making it more realistic. (not talking about the more controversial stuff but just in general)
I agree with ALL of this but what I despise most with a fiery passion is the '"Love Triangle Trope" I always end up rooting for the wrong guy and get super furious when the mc just downright refuses to choose one person and keeps hurting both of them by toying with their emotions basically.
i feel like love triangle is only done right when one of them is an unlikable character. i hate how in most of the love triangles there is a good girl, a soft boy and a bad boy. the good girl goes for the bad boy and the soft boy gets his heart broken. WHY? HE DID NOTHING WRONG HE WAS GOOD TO HER THE WHOLE TIME. its feels so unfair.

@@garyenkwong1683 yea i loathe when people dismiss abuse just because the victim is a male, in real life and books. definitely a stigma we need to break bcs its fucked up

I always catch myself not picking a book because the cover. The cover is apart of selling a book. It’s much like a product. The packaging sells. The book can be great and yes I have read and admired and adored books that I may not love the cover but as time goes on, I defiantly look at the cover and base how much I want to read a book off that.
I hate it when the characters only have a relationship based on their sexual attraction but i dont think the emotional conection has to necesarily happen first. im 17 and have been reading romance novels for years lmao but I completely relate to that pet peeve about characters being too young or in high school. Like I know many high schoolers yk being one myself and not a single one acts the way they do it books. Also not once have I read about high school MCs actually studying when they're in year 11/12???? and like I understand thats not a priority in many teenagers' lives but how do these book characters go through the entire school year surrounded in all this drama yet still somehow find themselves on their way to an Ivy League school after graduation like???? most people aren't geniuses like that and actually have to work for their grades and therefore dont have time for all this drama plsss lmao you could have had the whole school setup thing going on while making them have realistically busy and drama-filled lives by making them uni students !!!
As a Latina, I *loathe* when authors try and make it obvious that the character is Latino/Hispanic by just throwing in random italicized Spanish words in there. I could not finish Island Affair because the word “familia” was in there too many damn times. Makes me cringe so hard 😖
First of all you look stunning! Second I can’t stand books where one or both main characters are already in a relationship so we have to wait for them to break up before they pursue anything with the main person. With the exception of Birthday Girl, I cannot be bothered with that trope. Third, I would love to see a “Things I Love in Books” video!

as someone who read a bunch of books that are set in different times, like the early/late 60-80s and they add stuff like phones or songs that don’t come out for like another decade just ruins the setting for me. like i get if the mc is time traveling, thats normal, but when its like set in the 70s and they need to borrow their friends phone and call their mom when theyre out at the mall or something. or when they turn on the radio in the 60s and lana del rey starts playing. anywho, thanks for coming to my ted talk ig
I just cant understand when authors give the girls an embarrassing moments or embarrassing things she does. Like hello! As soon as I read any of these situations I close the book and try my best to stop imagining it happen. 💆♀️💆♀️😩

I've been in a reading slump a lot lately everytime I would try and read a book I wouldn't finish it but that's when I started watching your videos and it definitely made me want to go back and read again also I hate when the corner of the page is folded instead of an actual bookmark because it'll mess up the page or when people tear out a page in the book even though you own it
YES FINALLY! Someone who agrees with me on the enemies to lovers thing! Like once their together i'm like whats the point in finishing the book? Tbh same with any romance book. Once their together it gets boring, the best bit is the build up by far! I enjoy a couple chapters at the end of them together and thats it.
You must have read it by now i would really like to know about your opinion but for me the character development was shit, like how can you go from i don't even wanna face you to i obey to everything you say like a dog and will bring you moon and star and like, are you in middle school bcz like Aiden is totally in love with cate from the starting but can't confess, so let's fight, in short i hated Aiden's character his character development was so sudden

the way you hit the head on the nail with all of these omg i was literally coming up with book examples in my head for every pet peeve you talked about
no because there’s so many books i want to get but i can’t cuz on the cover you can tell that it’s explicit and i’m too young to read those (but i do anyways) like the deal, i really want the physical copy and i know the cover is different now but i just don’t like real people on the cover so yeah that sucks
Yes to the descriptions of characters 🙄 it takes me out of the book immediately if there's a whole long paragraph about what they look like and what they wear because I'm sitting there trying so hard to imagine it
As someone who wants to write a book, this was definitely helpful. I agree with everything you have said. If a relationship or character is portrayed poorly it will stop me from reading, no matter how good the plot is, and vise versa. I also really despise unnecessary information in books as that leads to plot holes. I have read a few books where the side plots are totally irrelevant to the main plot, which leaves you wondering if it was even needed in the story. Like you said, the endings should be rounded up properly as well. I also hate it when authors will drag out a story and rush the ending. As a reader you just end up feeling like you haven’t achieved that satisfaction with finishing the book, and it makes you wonder why you bothered to spend hours to even read the story.
I agree with the last one so much. I don’t like books where the characters are lusting after each other every time they meet. I love deep and emotional romance.😫 Also, I don’t read books with smut in them, but sometimes I don’t know what I’m getting into.

Totally agreed with you! Especially the part where people skip through the series of books. I know most authors would say you can read the books as standalone however just like you said the books has numbers for a reason. And indeed it’s all worth it to go through by the series by order because it makes it more special because you felt that you were became part of their stories too. 🥰
I don't like when I have to wait forever for a paperback instead of paying twice as much for the hardcover...when I don't like hardcovers...also when a chapter in a book has a title that kind of spoils the chapter...just me? I agree with Steph about the shirtless guys on the covers and the miscommunication just for the sake of drama (and everything else but those were the big ones :))
I appreciate this video, lately I have been getting more mad at books because so many of them just end so abruptly, like whatever conflict gets solved and then it’s over a few pages or one chapter later and it makes me so mad. I want to read books that still have like 4 or more chapters after the big thing is resolved. I feel like reading series is the only way I won’t get mad because they take a long time to end 😂
The thing you mentioned about the enemies to lovers. I feel like The Hating Game is a perfect example cause a few pages in and their already kissing so im like where was the hate???
That's why I didn't like the book that much what's the point of calling it a Enemies to lovers book if the main characters are already kissing in the next 3 or 4 chapters later???
Bruh and not even just that, but the fact that he admitted at the end that he was in love with her the whole time?? That literally negates the whole idea of enemies to lovers if you didn’t actually hate her!!! And also the fact it’s another trope I hate: treating the person you claim love like shit! I never get that trope! I’m sorry but I would never recommend that book as an enemies to lovers to anyone because it wasn’t one for me.
me personally, i love miscommunication/willfull avoidance of communication... if its done right. i dislike it most of the time, but sometimes i just find that sweet spot where it's something that is heartwrenching but still makes sense within the plot and characterization of the characters! its exciting and anxiety inducing but also feels very realistic to me when done right
I both agree and disagree with the "distinguishing reality from fiction" idea because on one hand even if a book touches on problematic ideas or behaviours it doesn't mean that the person reading condones those behaviors BUT I find it really hard to read books with problematic aspects where the those ideas aren't ever challenged or denounced because it just reads as romanticisation of those toxic behaviors which is super harmful. Like in After for example my main issue with that book is that it rarely points out or acknowledges just how toxic the relationship is and the fact that they end up together in the end after all that borderline abusive behavior with little to no character development is just very icky to me I much prefer when books like that end in the characters splitting up and learning from the bad aspects of the previous relationships to become better people.
One of my favorite author always put people on her covers and then she will give a different description of them......gets to me so much as well as give lots of detail about what they wear...im like yes i get it u know ur brands

Steph : I hate the super quirky, cringey embarrassing girl character trope.
Bella from twilight : 👁👄👁
Bella doesn’t count… Twilight doesn’t count either😂😂
the reason I had to DNF the first book and not even think about reading the rest
I had to listen to the audios for this series because I HATED the Bella my mind created. Like I wanted to stab her with a fork. I don't think I've ever disliked a character more but at the same time, I wanted to know what all the hype was about.
To me bella was so boring and lifeless, its like girl 🤣🤣🤣

The shirtless men and people. Thank you! I’m scared to ask for these books. And when you need to go out in public. :(
Yes!! or when i bring them home and my parents see them 😩 its just so embarrassing.
10000% - Book covers with shirtless men + reading on public transport or in front of my boyfriend is a recipe for embarrassment I hate it like pllssss just make the cover simple hahaha
There should at least always be a second edition of the book with a normal/non embarassing cover
Because I cannot bring myself to buy a book with a shirtless man on it and then risk for my parents to see it😭
If a book have a shirtless man on the cover but the story seems worthy, I just read it in the digital format so no one can see it and judge me hahah
You should make your own dust cover !!!
i’m so glad you pointed out misogyny in books, especially from the girl characters. one of my favorite parts in the deal was hannah calling a girl a floozy or something and garrett’s like “she could actually be really smart” like THANK YOU!! 😭👏🏽

My biggest pet peeve is when the author keeps mentioning how short the heroine is. The hating game is one of my favorite books but I was very annoyed on how they kept mentioning how “small” Lucy was like okay we get it she’s short.
literally and of the reasons I didn't enjoy the book as much as I'd hoped! The emphasis on their height differences was so exaggerated..

YESSSS
i feel like love triangle is only done right when one of them is an unlikable character. i hate how in most of the love triangles there is a good girl, a soft boy and a bad boy. the good girl goes for the bad boy and the soft boy gets his heart broken. WHY? HE DID NOTHING WRONG HE WAS GOOD TO HER THE WHOLE TIME. its feels so unfair.
@@maliharsalann IKR unless the "bad boy" is actually soft and not toxic at all (which is rare). Also when love triangles envolve cheating is definitely a no no for me. there's absolutely no excuse for that AT ALL.
@@theasterarchive YES and the ‘bad boy’ keeps pushing the girl away, treating her like shit but the girl is all like ‘he’s just broken🥺’ and ‘i can fix him 🥺’ NO
Yass but it happens in real life toooo. Like some people just want the toxicity in a relationship and they might not even realize it
My biggest book pet peeve is when the women hits the men just because they're upset. It doesn't make her 'a strong badass women'. They think that it's okay yet complain when men do it. Neither is okay.
…I think this also happens in real life
@@garyenkwong1683 yea i loathe when people dismiss abuse just because the victim is a male, in real life and books. definitely a stigma we need to break bcs its fucked up

Okay but my mind went right to percabeth when Annabeth judo flipped him for getting kidnapped in front of a bunch of romans and then Reyna congratulated her wtf??

Yes! I hate it when a happy ending is like, them getting married or having a kid or something. im 17 and have been reading romance novels for years lmao but I completely relate to that pet peeve about characters being too young or in high school.
Totally also Hs wasn't a fun time and most hs don't date older guys like common that's problematic
6:18 gradual buildups and slow burns are so necessary for enemies to lovers! The tension is what I’m here for 😭
As a Latina, I *loathe* when authors try and make it obvious that the character is Latino/Hispanic by just throwing in random italicized Spanish words in there. I could not finish Island Affair because the word “familia” was in there too many damn times. Makes me cringe so hard 😖

First of all you look stunning! as someone who read a bunch of books that are set in different times, like the early/late 60-80s and they add stuff like phones or songs that don’t come out for like another decade just ruins the setting for me. like i get if the mc is time traveling, thats normal, but when its like set in the 70s and they need to borrow their friends phone and call their mom when theyre out at the mall or something. or when they turn on the radio in the 60s and lana del rey starts playing. anywho, thanks for coming to my ted talk ig

I love deep and emotional romance.😫

Like in After for example my main issue with that book is that it rarely points out or acknowledges just how toxic the relationship is and the fact that they end up together in the end after all that borderline abusive behavior with little to no character development is just very icky to me I much prefer when books like that end in the characters splitting up and learning from the bad aspects of the previous relationships to become better people.
this hairstyle tutorial please!!! your hair always looks soo nice
Steph i literally feel like your describing the deal the whole time but its your favourite book 🤣

@@sarasinger7336 noo go for it! all its flaws will be undermined by how cute Garrett is 😂
One of my favorite author always put people on her covers and then she will give a different description of them......gets to me so much as well as give lots of detail about what they wear...im like yes i get it u know ur brands
the hating game repitiveness of her height almost ruined the book for me.
i lowkey hated that book just bc of lucy lol
I would definitely love to see a video about the things you love on books!
Elle Kennedy is publishing a new book in September called "The Legacy" and it is an epilogue book for the off-campus series!
😮😮😮
Yes thats for off campus I think thats why she did not mention off campus not having like an epilogue type book. She said Briar U doesn’t have one which is true, but since Elle Kennedy made this one hoping she makes one for Briar U as well.
yesss do an opposite video where you talk about things you love the most in books!!!
