    Nice video Eric.
    Sometimes I kinda forget whats it all about.

    • @ericdodson2644
      @ericdodson2644  2 роки тому +2

      Well, Ronan, it's actually pretty easy to forget what it's all about. The reason is that in this time and place, our world encourages us to see life myopically... to fixate on the details of getting to the next weekend, for instance... or on the next show we're going to binge-watch on Netflix. So, there's really no shame in falling prey to that tendency. But on the other hand, maybe our best destiny isn't really to be completely consumed by life's minutiae. Maybe there's a time and place for learning to see with the eyes of the world. Just a thought. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to listen. Gratitude. Eric D.

    I especially love hearing your prose. It adds a quality to your videos that elevates the concepts beyond an intellectual understanding and into that experiential place of knowing. Your lectures are an aesthetic experience for me. I was a grad student about 15 years ago at UWG. I remember leaving your classes wishing everyone I knew could be part of the experience. • @ericdodson2644

      Well, thanks for saying that, Grace. My own perception is that every single one of us is a bearer of intelligence. And every single one of us is a bearer of stupidity, too. Basically, we're composites of both of those. So, there's not much reason to get too caught up in either extreme. Instead, life is really about making the best of our situation, in much the same way you're describing... savoring the sweetness of things... climbing what hills there are to climb... and enjoying the exhilaration of exploring life's wide terrain. So, I hereby and henceforth affirm the shift in mindset you're experiencing. You seem to be on the right path... so, yeah... see where it goes. Anyhow, thanks for listening. Gratitude. Eric D.

    Dr D. I know you’ve retired from academia and I gather that you have engaged in several action packed careers already, so if you want to enjoy your retirement I wish you all the best. But I’ve been thinking (here’s trouble!) … I think it was Irvin Yalom who pointed out that psychotherapy is the one career where you have more to offer the older you get. (As a matter of fact, I am commencing my studies in that field now, at the age of 51). If you were so inclined, I think you would make the most sensational therapist. You’re too good for the golf course!

    • @ericdodson2644
      @ericdodson2644  2 роки тому

      Ha ha... "Eric 'Too good for the golf-course' Dodson." That might even be better than, "The Pastor of Muppets." Actually I did go through a clinically-oriented doctoral program. So, I've taken all of the usual courses in individual & group psychotherapy, tests & measures, etc. Plus I did a two-year clinical internship. That was before I caught the teaching-bug, and decided to go the academic route. But what interested me about teaching was its potential for occasioning human growth and transformation -- basically the same sorts of dynamics that run through psychotherapy, but of course in a somewhat more intellectual way. Hmm... as far as pursuing a career in psychotherapy at age 51... well, I'd say that it's never too late to change our paths in life, even in fairly fundamental ways. And yes, I'd agree with Yalom that psychotherapy is a pursuit that benefits from having *more* life-experience, rather than less. And that's particularly true with respect to your area of specialization. So, if you've been through addiction and recovery, for instance, that pool of experience can easily make you a better D&A counselor (mmm... that's, "drugs and alcohol"... I'm not sure if you use the same lingo in the Land Down Under). In any case, I'd say that at age 51, you're embarking on a long and fulfilling adventure. So, yeah... stay with it, and see where it leads you. The Pastor of Muppets has spoken!.. Ha ha... Eric D.

    Eric. I have been thinking. Which is nearly always a good thing to do. In this video you say that you do not monetise because you want to keep the videos free from influence by the financial reward that you would get. I hope that is a fair paraphrase. I agree that is a worthy aim. However, getting back to my thinking, I thought that the fact that you have made a video that is subtitled "(40K special)" seems to show that you value the number of subscribers that you have. Also, you interact with people who comment on your videos. Again, this seems to show that you value the comments. So, although you are not motivated by financial incentives to make the videos, it would appear to me that you value both the number of subscribers that you have and the comments they make. You claim that you do not go out of your way to prompt the videos, not seeking to raise viewers by building a "brand". Does this not lead to you getting an even higher rush of endorphins when the numbers and comments go up? You may consciously think that this is due to your paired down, no gimmick, straight to the subject videos but are you not playing to your audience to increase the numbers? This led me to thinking how could you tell if you are making the videos you want to make or the videos that people want to watch? Now, those two types of videos are not necessarily incompatible. How can one measure success without the measurement effecting the future content and form of the videos. On the one hand, you have a message you want to share - to give back to UA-cam and society, On the other hand, you don't want that to be twisted by the rewards you get from making the videos. Please note this is more a thought experiment about the situation than an ad hominem attack. The question is now, do I ask for your response as on the one hand it would, give me insight into my thinking but on the other modify the way I go about posting comments on youtube channels.

      Wow, John, thanks for the thoughtful and somewhat challenging comment! So, let me take a few minutes to ride along the arc of your thought-experiment. First... yes, it's true that I do care about the success of this channel. And you're right about how answering my viewers, and even celebrating reaching 40K subscribers are markers of that. At an emotional level, I'd say that it's gratifying when people find value in the gift I'm trying to offer the world through these videos. At a more rational level, my logic goes something like this: If I feel I have something worthwhile to offer, then wouldn't it be better if *more* people were to receive it, rather than fewer? And to me, the answer would obviously be, "Yes." And yeah, in a way achieving a modest measure of success without doing the obvious, somewhat manipulative things to attain it... would make that success all that much sweeter. And that probably is part of my underlying motivation. And so I try to offer content that satisfies me as a creator, but that's also satisfying and useful to my audience as I imagine it (like I'm describing toward the end of this video). However, to me there's also the question of what I'm willing to do to make all of that happen. And the "bridge too far" for me would be... to do things that I personally find irksome, but that would probably increase my popularity. Such is the case with begging for subscribers, or including ad's in my videos. I don't like it when other content-creators do things like that. And so why would I expect my own audience to feel differently about it? Hmm.... however, I think that the core of the argument you're making is: Well, am I not just substituting one sort of reward for another... basically enjoying a more emotional reward, rather than a more monetary one? And yeah, I'd say that that's true. That is what I'm doing. Oops... the wife is calling. Maybe more later. Anyhow, thanks for the thoughtful question. It's prompting me to think more deeply about what I'm doing. Gratitude. Eric D.

    Wasting time is wasting life!!! How many of us drudge through jobs we loathe just for a paycheck??
    Man, I have mulled this over for years how so much of our lives is just sitting in the waiting room until our appointment comes up.
    Just a thought…

      Yes, as the great sage Tyler Durden puts it, "Working jobs we hate, so we can buy shit we don't need." And yeah, maybe that paradigm is just a little over-rated. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to listen & comment. Gratitude. Eric D.

    So we're not going to ever find out what brand of toilet paper you use? UNSUBSCRIBED. Kidding. Keep on uploading quality content, we appreciate it.

      Well, ever since the great Toilet Paper Scare of 2020, I've been using the generic bulk stuff from Amazon. At this point, we have enough stockpiled to endure the entire Book of Revelation with clean behinds... and even our radioactive zombie-selves will be shambling through the post-Apocalyptic hell-scape with good posterior hygiene! So, worry not! Ha ha... Anyhow, TVAC, thanks for taking the time to watch & listen. Gratitude. Eric D.
