For me, the Spyderco K390 Endura 4 wharncliffe, and the Cold Steel S35VN Frenzy. Both have premium steels and plenty of usable edges on top of their utility points, and both have very reliable back locks, and both carry very well in pocket being light and have slim profiles. The Frenzy also has the most reach aka blade length for self defense purposes.
Over the last couple years I've fallen in love with wharncliffes. As a fixed blade option, I've used the artisan sea snake for work the last couple years. Handiest knife I've owned.
I work as a walmart overnight stocker so I literally open packages all night long and I've found that a wharncliffe or sheepsfoot button lock or crossbar lock is absolutely perfect for my work.
Was always a tanto fan but now wharncliff is now my fave shape, especially harpoon addition. Good vid I like how you try different video topics all the time, makes your channel more well rounded than most.
THANK YOU for this video! ive been saying this forever, warncliffes are criminally underrated as they still have a good tip that imo is more controllable, but you get that straight edge for a good chisel/scraping effect. one of my favorites is the kizer swayback because i wanted a small workhorse in maint when i didnt want to beat up my pm2 (spoiler, still beat up my pm2 as well lol) but my all time favorite is the spyderco spin
Last year i picked up a Chaves Sangre and that has absolutely changed my mind on wharncliffe blades. For EDC/utility tasks it really can’t be beat. I think this blade shape is super under rated, but glad to see it gaining popularity. Thanks for another great video man
@@DZNTZ so there's a good few out there. Firstly there's either utility oriented HBs, and for them you can choose any cheap roofing knife. HB's other main use is self defence, and for that I love my cold steel talon, Spyderco matriarch and harpy (more utilitarian). Kansept and bestech has some good HBs, and the artisan cutlery eagle is good looking. For more you can go to bladeHQ and filter by hawk bills, but those are my recommendations. Good luck bud
Great video Jared, always love these mid-length - longer video's you do. Btw, can you keep me posted on whether the Kansept Convict blade swap ends up working okay? I ask because I have wanted to put the hole opening one from my G10 variant onto my stonewashed Ti premium version, but just haven't pulled the trigger on doing so because my budget models 2 body screws have been Loctite to hell and back and really would only wanna fuck with it getting open if I knew the blade worked. I just kind of assumed since one was a liner lock and the other is a frame lock that the blades tang and overall lockup geometry was inevitably different. Anyways thanks for the video as always, keep em' coming bro💪
I have the Friday Club M390 Swayback that I don’t carry and I’ll send it to you if you want it as a good little beater since you are the utility cut king.
Yesss i totally agree i fell in love with spyderco wharnies when i got two of the cutlery shoppe exclusive xhp pm2's ughhh insane knives both came hair whittling out of the box and stayed thay way for quite a long time with minor maintenance on a strop! For $170 and the materials used, tight tolerances and versatility i don't think there is a better option...
This video could have easily been doubled in length just looking at Spyderco Wharncliffe options. The Spyderco Delica, in K390, the Spyderco Canis, and the Spyderco Smock.
Great looking knives overall at a great range of prices from budget to premium. I like wharncliff blades but i feel like the tips are a bit more fragile vs a sheepsfoot or drop point as ive seen quite a few in for broken tip repair. Amazing for utility though along with any task that calls for puncturing or stabbing. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable
Wharncliffs are my favorite blade shape. My dream knife has a button lock wharncliff with thumbstuds, a finger choil, with a lefty clip, still haven’t found one. Was HEARTBROKEN the Ziffius wasn’t lefty friendly. One day I’ll find it.
Love me a wharny! Folder or fixed, it’s an infinitely useful blade. The Yojimbo is a must for any knife collector and wharny fan. The Critical or Mini Critical are good budget options, also Kansept Main St. I really like a good hawkbill too, the Bestech Ivy is an underrated hawk imo. For a 5th pocket, low-key carry the Bestech Strelit is the sharpest, sliciest, small blade I’ve ever seen. It’s nasty.
Great review, thanks! I have 4 of these. I like the 3.2” Yojimbo very much, but for pure self defense have to give it to the awesome fixed blade Ronin, which at 4” is the blade size of the Yojumbo, but in CTS BD1N steel. I have mine setup for scout carry with a g clip and it’s a great self defense blade. The only knife I like better in the role is the Tops Cut 4 carried the same way. The karambit style handle ring on the Cut 4.0 means you’ll never lose it. Definitely adding the Kansept Arcus to my list, glad you showed it here. I was able to snag a WE Exiton, hope I can find a Ziffius, love the version you have, thanks!
So im super ignorant about knife shapes but compared to a drop point or a spear point, would a wharncliffe be better or worse for cutting open a plastic zip tie that only has tip edge width of clearance between tie and cable? I dont wanna damage my coax cables but probably gotta pop and rezip em every week. Usually I'm reaching overhead, holding the cable mass with my left hand, arm at half extension pushing upwards and away from my body with the blade.
Well i do really Like that american tantó with straight cutting edge which Is in my oppinion similar but you sacrifice small amount of lenght to Have some "semi-chisel" ať the end of your knife.
looking for your opinion (or any fellow mechanics) im a auto tech and use knives at work. I also happen to be a lil lazy I admit when it comes to sharpening. i plan on grabbing the new worksharp precision adjust pro and wondering what blade steel and what level of sharpening do you recommend for cutting tape, boxes, hoses, belts, plastic, and sometimes food lol. thanks for your time and i mean if you want to send me a knife I wouldn't argue lol jk
I thought it was the other way around like sheep‘s foot had less angles, had a more smooth Suttle dissent whereas the Wharncliffe had more angles in the back
Does anyone know if the Precision Knife Works Wharnetac in the video is the "full hollow grind" version? Cuz the pics on the website all look the same. I would think that full hollow grind would be from the edge to the spine. But I've yet to see a picture of the knife in that configuration. I paid extra to have the full hollow but I'm not sure what I'm going to get. I tried to reach out to the maker but I haven't received a response. I think he's really busy ATM so does anyone have any inside info? Thanks in advance!
Interesting thing about the wharncliffe and sheepsfoot is that they are essentially polar opposites. One emphasizes the tip while the other is trying to minimize it. Yet we still get them confused
Yeah I think as far as the original design that's how it goes, however for edc we tens to like the tip a bit more on the sheepsfoot than in the past because it was originally designed for sheeps hooves and we didn't want the tip poking them, but for edc we like poky
I had the Watauga and it was horrible. The lock stick was absolutely worthless. I wanted to love it. I have an Actium that is great. Made me kinda sad that it was so bad.

Buy whatever blade shape you like! They can all do the same cuts if you can move your arm and hand! Who dafuq needs to cut out cardboard shapes with the tip of their knife anyway? 🤷♂️
I used to do it daily at the distillery, and in construction your constantly cutting that way through all kinds of stuff, vinyl, wood, paper, plastic, aluminum, Rosen paper, so on and so on. And you can not do the same with any blade shape, there's a reason utility blades don't come with Persian blades lol

Look at the endura warn cliff.

They’re awesome . Once I got used to using them it’s hard to go back. Low tip ftw 🙌
Nice! Wharncliffes are my favorite blade shape. Of course, being a craftsman by trade, it makes sense. I have a Clavi and a Watauga. Both excellent.
I love Wharncliffes but I also really like my Hawkbill.

$20 Kershaw Misdirect became the ED work C when the Leek prices skyrocketed years ago. Solid knife for cheap.
One of my favorite wharnies is an older one the Blackhawk knives Be Wharned by Michael Janich same guy that designed the Spyderco ronin/yojimbo

For a fixed wharncliffe I can recommend the Artisan Seasnake.

Do any wharncliffes actually have a flat edge? Like laying it flat on a table flat.
The looks of the pocket clip on the Kansept Convict is a deal breaker for me.
Great video
is WE making a smaller version of Ziffius?
How about after a lot of hard use and sharpening - won't the tip get rounded?
That would happen regardless you have to re sharpen your edge, because in that case your edge is most likely dull anyway.
