  • Richard Wayne Penniman (born December 5, 1932), known by the stage name Little Richard, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, recording artist, and actor, considered key in the transition from rhythm and blues to rock and roll in the mid-1950s. He was also the first artist to put the funk in the rock and roll beat[4][5] and contributed significantly to the early development of soul music.[6][7] The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website entry on Penniman states that:
He claims to be "the architect of rock and roll", and history would seem to bear out Little Richard's boast. More than any other performer -- save, perhaps, Elvis Presley, Little Richard blew the lid off the Fifties, laying the foundation for rock and roll with his explosive music and charismatic persona. On record, he made spine-tingling rock and roll. His frantically charged piano playing and raspy, shouted vocals on such classics as "Tutti Frutti", "Long Tall Sally" and "Good Golly, Miss Molly" defined the dynamic sound of rock and roll.[8]
Penniman began performing on stage and on the road in 1945, when he was in his early teens.[3] He began his recording career on October 16, 1951[9] by imitating the gospel-influenced style of late-1940s jump blues artist Billy Wright,[10] who was a friend and also helped arrange his first sessions. He recorded for RCA Records from 1951-52 and for Peacock Records beginning in 1953. Dissatisfied with his lack of commercial success during this time, Penniman formed a new "hard-driving" R&B road band in 1953. By early 1955, a demo tape of his music caught the attention of Specialty Records president Art Rupe, who bought out his contract from Peacock and arranged for him to record for Specialty in September 1955. Under the guidance of Robert "Bumps" Blackwell, Penniman began recording in a style he had been performing onstage for years,[11] featuring varied rhythm (derived from everything from drum beats he would hear in his voice to the sounds of trains he would hear thundering by him as a child), a heavy backbeat, funky saxophone grooves, over-the-top gospel-style singing, moans, screams, and other emotive inflections, accompanied by a combination of boogie-woogie and rhythm and blues music.[3] This new music,[12][13] which included an original injection of funk into the rock and roll beat,[5][8] inspired many of the greatest recording artists of the twentieth century and beyond, including James Brown,[14] Elvis Presley,[15] Otis Redding,[6] Bob Dylan,[16] Jimi Hendrix,[6][17] The Beatles,[18][19] Rolling Stones,[20][21] Led Zeppelin,[22] Michael Jackson,[23] and generations of other rhythm & blues, rock, soul, as well as funk and rap artists.[24][25][26][27]
On October 12, 1957, while at the height of stardom, Penniman abruptly quit rock and roll music and became a born-again Christian.[28] He had charted seventeen original hits in less than three years.[29] In January 1958, he enrolled in and attended Bible college[30] to become a preacher and evangelist and began recording and performing only gospel music for a number of years. He then moved back and forth from rock and roll to the ministry, until he was able to reconcile the two roles in later life.[31]
Penniman was among the first group of inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and one of only four of those artists (along with Ray Charles, James Brown, and Fats Domino) to also receive the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Pioneer Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2003, Penniman was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.[32] In 2007, his 1955 original hit "Tutti Frutti" was voted Number 1 by an eclectic panel of renowned recording artists on Mojo's The Top 100 Records That Changed The World, hailing the recording as "the sound of the birth of rock and roll."[33][34] In 2010, The United States of America's Library of Congress National Recording Registry added the groundbreaking recording to its registry, claiming that the hit, with its original "A-wop-bop-a-loo-mop-a-lop-bam-boom!" a cappella introduction, heralded a new era in music.[.- Wikipedia

Music industry did little richard dirty. i didn't realize how much he's done in his career, and all the famous and successful people he inspired, and helped discover. It's a shame he didn't get paid what he deserved....

+babiphat20 Although he's a legend for his 1956/1958 run of hits..he's laying it on rather thick.. Yes he influenced people , but it's only just those two years. After that he was only famous with Jimmy Swaggart and pat Boone types ..Richard just likes throwing famous names around.

Whenever you hear Little Richard proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, he always does it with authority. He never shies from it and NEVER apologizes or qualifies it. He proclaims it, and I will always respect that about him. Say what you will, but the man is a true-to-the-bone preacher.

@@gennyzentella4692 nah, he was tormented by faith. Family and faith that taught him he couldn't be himself, that he had to "stop" being gay, stop playing rock music. Little Richard was born gay, was still gay in interviews where he said he wasn't anymore, and died gay. If it weren't for religion, he would have lived a much happier life.

@@TKO67 Agree and consider why it's not popular -- the entertainment industry is run by the secret societies like the globalist masons and they are Antichrist. Just look at all the celebs flashing the gang hands signs and covering one eye (dont believe me? **Go browse Jerimiah Cohen channel** as he exposes them all.) So many are occult initiates and took an oath to the Craft. I was shocked to see who all joined the club.
The entertainment industry is not tolerant of true Bible based Christians. However, If you profess a false version of Christianity (covertly run by these very secret societies), they tolerate you.
That's why Prince, Michael Jackson and Serena Williams were Jehovah Witnesses as Watchtower is covertly run by nwo/globalist Freemasons. These celebs were just playing their "role" as influencers. Hollywood will promote their own brethren as it's a big club.
Many celebs during award shows "Thank God" but they are not referring to The One True Living God of the Bible and deny the Deity of Christ of John 1:1.
Sadly, so many pulpits have been infiltrated with these masonic money hungry wolves & hirelings and they make Christians look stupid so no one takes them seriously. That is strategic Spiritual warfare.

shyannedianne1962 I agree we should be happy it was created. I just think it's very important for people to know the historical facts about how it was created and who created it. I will never forget an argument I had with a racist who told me that blues music had absolutely nothing to do with heavy metal and Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath were nothing like blues musicians. Then I informed him that "Black Sabbath" was once named "The Polka Tulk Blues Band". He really didn't like looking that fact up on the Internet. The reason it's important to know is that people might find out the origins and be introduced to a whole genre of music they never thought they would like.

@Diane Catts Elvis got his inspiration from gospel, swing, and blues that came from the Great African Americans during his time. Elvis made Rock and Roll mainstream that I can agree with, but people need to understand that Rock and Roll existed thanks to Great Musicians & Entertainers such as BBKing, Fats Domino, and of course Little Richard long before Elvis became popular. Elvis may have popularized and made Rock & Roll known to American and the world, but I feel you can't include Elvis without mentioning Black American History which also includes Gospel as well (Mahalia Jackson Amen!). I love both Elvis & Little Richard ^_^ but its time Little Richard also did get the recognition he deserves! To me he is the True King & Architect

Yes! I noticed that, too. It was kind of sad..all the while he was saying "No no, that's all behind me now," he was stroking the piano, stroking the keys, looking sideways out the corner of his eye at the piano, leaning toward it, tickling the keys, irresistibly drawn to it like a magnet, like a lover. He LOVES a piano & he's a born performer. I'm glad his career wasn't over when HE thought it was. This country still needs his unique mix of outrageous beauty, blunt truth, wit, love, & bravery.
