You have to climb a mountain. You're given $2000 and a set of BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A K02 off-road tires. You buy an E30. Can it make it? Sponsored Content
The only reason this video exists was because BFGoodrich approached them about it, why are you people complaining? I don't mind them promoting the tire, if it means more content, and being introduced to something that looks like a pretty neat tire I probably wouldn't have heard of otherwise. To those complaining, grow up and realize the nature of the business, and don't get your panties twisted about product placement. Who cares? Even if they didn't get sponsored to do this, they would still bring up what tire they're using, so doesn't that amount to the same thing anyways? Either way, good video, bit short if I'm honest, but enjoyable, and interesting to see Mike out of his comfort zone of V8's and leaf springs. Keep it up guys, maybe one day people will stop whining about free content. Beats watching anything on TV/cable these days anyway.
+enigmaPL well drive has the right to do video like this, but we have the right to complain about it.. so grow up and realize the nature of youtube comment section
+Zac Price depends on who you ask. most 88s have diving boards but the rear apron was changed, so the plastic bumpers will fit. you can put late model FRONT bumpers on any e30. but 89 and up they will all be plastic.
Best car BMW ever made. mine was my first car, and I still have it. I've been on camping trips on some pretty gnarly roads, 4 people deep in my car, water, rocks etc, on lowered springs even. These things are basically bulletproof lol
As a fan of Musto's work, I have to disagree with him on the E30. Of course, you can build a very fast muscle car and older classics have tons of character but the E30 isn't soul-less. It's more sober than, say, a 1970 Cuda but especially considering what was being made at the time it's quite a cheerful little car that's fun to throw around and hard to break. Being a muscle car guy in Europe I've had a hard time finding a classic car I can own and daily drive - I tried an E30 out of curiosity and I had to buy one. It's nimble, cheap, easy to repair and for a small euro sedan it looks quite good.
After owning 3 e30, 1 325is and 2 318is, I hate to sound like a fan boy but it is still one of my favorite cars I've owned and driven. Still miss it and will buy another one again!
hold on a second.... This is an e30. You spend the entire video deriding the car and praising the tires... Why would you choose a a vehicle known for its legendary GO GO GO capacity, and try to play it off as the tires are what did the work? I believe that 31 years of reputation outshines whatever tires you might put on this legendary vehicle....
+vanox Meures that spec e30 was not ment for that terrain alright however the 325ix 4wd was maybe that's what they should of used either way im not surprised the car made it! ive been running a 325i 2 door for 3 years now and the only issue i have had worth mentioning is an alternator died on me other than that its just been general maintanence and its drove every day and hard for that matter! there the ideal car for a learning mechanic as there very easy work on!
+vanox Meures I pretty much learned to drive doing almost exactly this in the Arizona desert 30 years ago and on street tires. I never got so much a scratch on the car. The E30 has amazing ground clearance and suspension compliance for a sports sedan.
+vanox Meures You'd be surprised what a car can do with an experienced (or at least an uninhibited) driver. I often go off road with my sedans. Its just a matter of tire placement and knowing your ground clearance. I once had a 2004 Malibu (baseline) that I took out in the desert and drug the chassis through mud all the time. I put almost 250K miles on it before I sold it. Other than some obvious suspension issues, it ran like a champ. Now, I have a 2013 Versa that I take off road every once in a while and it's much more forgiving with its Traction Control and Stability Control. The Malibu didn't have any of that.
I had an 86 325e and absolutely loved it. that 2.7 might not be great up top, but it had plenty of torque down below to really put my LSD to work. E30's are amazing cars, they were built so well, and they can handle so much abuse and neglect. I bought mine with 250,000 miles used for $2500. Had ALL the service history with it, the original owners manual was stamped completely full by bmw shops, a huge folder of receipts and whatnot. All of it was routine maintenance, a radiator and a water pump. That was it. The engine was never disassembled on that car. I ended up selling it at 310,000 miles for $2500. Still purred like a kitten. Plus, what other car in 1986 locked the ignition with a 4-digit pin code FROM THE FACTORY???
I had one of the more popular chips in mine. forgot what one but the forums loved it. gave me a little boost in hp and changed the tuning so I had to run 91 octane minimum. I liked it. I never got good mpg I was always having too much fun. My current car (g35) says I'm getting like 16mpg lol. Manuals are too much fun.
Dear Mike, i don't get the point of making a video about a car you don't like, reviewing it way out of it's confort zone, then call it "crappy import"... I bet my right hand that none of your american sedan of the same periode would have done half of this. Away from the fact that this video is an ad and nothing else, i think you've prooved that you don't know much when it comes to something else than roof chopped rusty V8 pieces of shit (sorry for this). There is no smoke without a fire... E30's are beloved by an immense amount of people because they are GOOD and any car guy that knows what he talks about would say it. For the record: i don't own an e30, i'm just a car guy. And had appreciated all your other videos ;)
Not a fan of e30 at all but to say it's a bad car, is ignorant as hell. Round the track it'll be much better then 95% of any american car on this damn show.
One of the most surprising off road vehicles I have owned was a 1983 Honda Accord Hatchback. I have owned Jeeps and trucks, but that little car would go wherever you pointed it. Something about its size and front wheel drive + it had decent ground clearance.
I agree that the E30 is too popular right now and its driving the market apeshit. Its underpowered by todays standards. But thats not what its about. The E30 is a great foundation to build a project. Classic looks, a communicative driving experience. They are good for turbo drift projects, good for v8 swaps and drag racing, nimble for auto x, sturdy and light for rally :) Working on a bad ass E36 stroker build right now. Next up will probably be a 70s bmw 2002 turbo replica with a built n54. Should be good for some 10 second passes at the 1/4.
Why would Mike do that when his main aim was to sell those tyres and slag off the E30. Not sure what his personal issues are with the E30 but they certainly aren't professional. E30s deserve a lot of respect for many reasons that this Mike guy will never understand. Poor guy!
Throw me a bone Musto, please. You know not any old import is robust enough to take that kind of abuse. That little eta is one of the best built and most robust car of its time. They certainly don't know when to quit. it might not have a V8 or hail from Detroit, but it's the best little balance of fun, reliability, refinement, and comfort. There is a reason we still love these cars unlike a lot of yuppie cars from back in the day. Plus, you simply couldn't have bought an E12 and this because you hate them.
The BMW e30 may be a bit under-powered by modern standards, but it has a significant pedigree (including rally racing) and large and enthusiastic fan base. If you knew anything about the car and its history or the potential of the e30 chassis, you would stop ragging on it and give some respect. You found a shitty example of an e30 that had been poorly maintained, put your sponsor's tires on it and thrashed on it. In the end, the car survived your mistreatment and did things beyond what it should have been able to do at such mileage. Hey Drive, DON'T BE SUCH IDIOTS!
e30s rule. Great commercial. Narrator has a similar viewpoint that I once had for this chassis. My views were poisoned by the million yuppies who flaunted their e30s when they were new. My second e30 was a racecar, and now I have 5, one of which is calling for these tires to go with her stock springs and bottlecaps.
Hey, I don't mind the product placement, I just wish it had been obvious in the beginning that this video is pretty much an ad for BFG. Even if it is basically an ad, it's the best tire ad I've ever seen. ;)
I didn't miss any of those things, however, a nice [SPONSORED CONTENT] in the title is what many other channels do (or some variant thereof) and is what should be done in the name of full disclosure.
this is interesting with the E30 doing the whole off road thing. I like it. But you guys could have been a little more subtle with the whole BF ad thing. The vid is a blatant ad for BF.
Yeah, this isn't going to piss people off... Slagging off the E30, and giving the sponsored tires all the credit. I don't care if this didn't exist without the sponsorship because it's a bad video. /DRIVE should learn a thing or two from Roadkill. They wouldn't have thrown a classic great car under the bus because of a sponsorship.
I would take front-wheel drive before rear-wheel drive if I was in a 4x4. Also, if you don't have the money for nice new BFGs, snow tires can work well too. My friend made it up a road like this no problem in a '91 Corolla wagon with snow tires. Cool to see an E30 do this though.
I need tyres for my old truck. I like the way these look. may go for these if they aren't too expensive. I need something about 37in but no smalled than 35in. not a bad video for a commercial. hope you guys get more sponsors.
A couple of years ago, some friends and I were discussing if we should pay the extra price for an offroad capable rental car. I said "every rental car is an offroad car". Then we drove our small rented Renault on roads just as bad as in the video. The car was fine in the end and we saved a lot of money. Didn't even need offroad tires.
This guys arrogance and dislike of the e30 honestly disgusts me. Man travels an entire desert and enjoys his time doing it and says its because of the tires because the car itself did nothing. All tires. Jesus....
I live in Vegas and I have run the Wheeler Pass trail quite a few times. they took the easy way up from Pahrump on the west side of the mountain. tires had nothing to do with this (I love BFG tires by the way). I have seen bone stock street cars with street tires make it up to the top from the west side. it is a little rough in few spots but careful driving and you will be fine. not hard at all. once you crest the summit and start down the east side toward Cold Creek, that is where it get hairy. I have a 2015 Rubicon Hard Rock (it has BFG Mud Terrain KM2s which is a step up from the AT KO2), and I have had to put the lockers in to make up the east side this last spring after the all the rains. its very rough and I even bottomed out my Rubicon on a few spots. no way they went down the east side. I think they took the easy way and turn around an went out the same way they came in.
This reminded me of my dads Pinto . The first time my dad learned that Ford is coming out with a new car to replace the Falcon and it was called the Pinto he call the ford dealer and and ordered one . Just like Burger King he has to have it his way . It has to plain and simple . When it arrived at the dealer he went to look at it . It was just like the one I seen in most mags in the day . That construction yellow paint and coordinated interior with the 4 speed and the 1.6 l engine . He put traction tires all around and used to poor little car for work and hunting . I seen that car go places where most cars cant go and some light truck just cant go . Ever heard of Rally cars . Well there is a reason why they are called rally car and not trucks .
the BFG KO2 is a damn good tire. i've had them on my 2011 F150 since they were first released and they've been nothing but awesome. i've heard some not so great things about the KO's from a few guys i know that had them. they're ok when new but after they've worn down a bit they get damn sketchy in the rain.
I did something similar with an BMW E36 and really run down Tires. And I bought it for 300 bucks, with over 315.000Km. I was pretty amazed, that the car took this really well.
I would've never watched this video if i'd bothered checking the descriptions first. Sponsored content basically means the manufacturer of the product asked them to advertise it for them, making it look as good as possible, so they'd get paid.
I have noticed for every opening sequence of this show, there is a high pitched noise that plays every time with it and it has begun to actually kinda hurt my ears. Idk if it is just me but I would like it changed if possible?
there is a black droptop with the ugly bumpers up the road for well south of $1000. the interior has had it, the rockers have holes in them and there's 210k on the clock, but it's a 5 speed and runs good + knobbly studded ice climbers = snow drifting switchback runner. it doesn't have to be immaculate, as long as somebody loves it enough to keep it on the road, that is good enough.
Take a bit of Roadkill, mix it with a bit of Dirt Everyday and ya get Mike off-roading a rattletrap BMW sporting off road tires climbing up and over a desert mountain pass! 👍🏼
It's for sale on the LA craigslist right now. BMW 325e 1987 - $2600 (Culver City). Also, he clearly doesn't like e30s, so not sure why he was the one driving it....
Ride height up, get offroad tyres and a lightweright car like this. A welded diff would be nice too and you are good to go for such performance. Btw, why didn't they get a 325ix with all wheel drive ?
im sorry youre not an e30 fan but that doesnt justify you for being uneducated around one of the most iconic and reliable cars of all times.....and yes it was nice you made it but how much money did bf goodrich give you to promote their tires?enough i believe...also you could have been more objective and say that the e 30 is a balanced car, super reliable after 30 years of abuse and still got you out of the rocks....NOT ANY car would have done that...NOT ANY car has the right balance or weight distribution...you made the selection of the e30 which really wasnt left to chance and deep down you know it.....A good comment over the bmw's performance wouldnt hurt...after all its a 30 year old car...
So basically this video is just a super-long bf goodrich commercial...
+Kappa Cow and?
+Kappa Cow
Yea but it's free!
This. 100% this.
+Kappa Cow after noticed just he talks about just tires...i did think same as yours
People need to read the description. It says Sponsored Content.
I understand you trying to become popular from a different opinion.. But you cannot say that e30s are crap. They're amazing.
Don't hate on the e30
+jesse vassallo Don't worship the e30.
+robm425 No worship, just due praise.
No matter how much you guys avoided this, you just proved the world how tough is a 30 year old bimer.
Stop with the unreasonable hate. They're awesome cars
The only reason this video exists was because BFGoodrich approached them about it, why are you people complaining? I don't mind them promoting the tire, if it means more content, and being introduced to something that looks like a pretty neat tire I probably wouldn't have heard of otherwise.

Couldn't agree more
Looks like a fun trail
+enigmaPL Personally, this makes me want to find a beater, trim the fenders, throw on some meety tires, and fab up some scrap skid plates and go play.
+enigmaPL Fuckin preach man
+enigmaPL well drive has the right to do video like this, but we have the right to complain about it.. so grow up and realize the nature of youtube comment section
damn the american bumper version of E30 is ugly as f...
+f*ck google tuck them bumper boyyyyy. looks hella lot better
+f*ck google You think that's ugly? Go look at an american E21 or an E28 lol holy fuck those bumpers are huge
+tyler t plastic bumpers started in 88 actually.
+Zac Price depends on who you ask. most 88s have diving boards but the rear apron was changed, so the plastic bumpers will fit. you can put late model FRONT bumpers on any e30. but 89 and up they will all be plastic.
+Zac Price Yes, you're right. I have an E30 1988 M10 316 carb. But it has M40 plastic bumpers, tail lights and etc.
e30 is a great car
+Mark BallnFreerun I agree. The new one's just don't feel right to me when compared to a decently maintained e30.
Best car BMW ever made. mine was my first car, and I still have it. I've been on camping trips on some pretty gnarly roads, 4 people deep in my car, water, rocks etc, on lowered springs even. These things are basically bulletproof lol
every 250k-miles car could do this with the right tyres? i don't think so....
exactly that's why the bmw e30 is one of the best drivers cars ever created
+Rob Burnes Preach it brother
+Rob Burnes I'm pretty sure if I maxed out the coilovers on my S13 I could take this on with a skid plate and huge tires.
+Rob Burnes I think MB one up'ed the E30 with ab older car, the W123, if durability is what your looking for...
+dschonsie Bet ya Matt Farah's million mile Lexus would be able to with the right tires.
It's nimble, cheap, easy to repair and for a small euro sedan it looks quite good.
why did adblock not block this?
Best comment
After owning 3 e30, 1 325is and 2 318is, I hate to sound like a fan boy but it is still one of my favorite cars I've owned and driven. Still miss it and will buy another one again!
hold on a second.... This is an e30. You spend the entire video deriding the car and praising the tires... Why would you choose a a vehicle known for its legendary GO GO GO capacity, and try to play it off as the tires are what did the work? I believe that 31 years of reputation outshines whatever tires you might put on this legendary vehicle....
Is this a tire commercial?
+szili76 Probably what had to be done in order to get the tires for free.
+szili76 yes
+szili76 No, it's a tyre commercial.
I am actually impressed that car made it! it was not designed for that kind of terrain.
I agree..I owned one for 5 years, and have the e36 coupe now..both cars are just fun and rev to the redline each time no issues..
+DB1410 I daily a 220,000 mile 325iX and it has been absolutely phenomenal.
Thank you for making E's now more expensive.
Plus, what other car in 1986 locked the ignition with a 4-digit pin code FROM THE FACTORY???
plus if you put a 2.5 head on a 2.7 and a mild turbo you're basically unstoppable.
+Zac Price yeah, i did an ebay chip on my ETA and it was fantastic and still 34mpg hwy. All that fun grunt.
+Zac Price lol, mine is a 2.7 with a 2.5 head and turbo.
350whp 403wtq and hasn't complained for over a year.
+TWIRKNOLOVE hellz yes. i want another e30 so bad. hard to find any good ones lately
Dear Mike, i don't get the point of making a video about a car you don't like, reviewing it way out of it's confort zone, then call it "crappy import"... For the record: i don't own an e30, i'm just a car guy. And had appreciated all your other videos ;)
damn way to hit him with the truth
This Mike guy needs a scolding, no way can he say that an E30 is a "crap" car after getting him home after his stupid experiment!
The noisy valvetrain isn't anything to worry about, M20s just sound like sewing machines. I mean a valve adjustment might help, but it's fine.
how could you not love the e30 ....
I always loved the 3 series.. I love the look of them
Honestly, dicking around in a BMW in the dirt with bfgs would be a blast
My e36 would scrape on literally every rock in this video.
+Zach Grounds I've been on a badly graded gravel road with mine, the trans sump still has scrapes and chips from all the rocks.
+Zach Grounds I can hear it scraping now
+John Doe your a special kind of guy
Not a fan of e30 at all but to say it's a bad car, is ignorant as hell. Round the track it'll be much better then 95% of any american car on this damn show.
I have a base model 87 e30, my first car. I'm in love with it
Pretty cool video. Just happy to see more E30 content from /Drive peeps.
Best E30 add ever. Don't know why the tires were mentioned so much lol?
would love to see that e30 built up a little bit into a rally car
Not bad Musto, didnt think Id see you in anything but an american car. Cheap adventures are the best.
As long as it's interesting I don't give a damn if it's product placement
WHAT working on my e30 is NEVER a mechanical nightmare. It's always a pleasure.
One of the most surprising off road vehicles I have owned was a 1983 Honda Accord Hatchback. I have owned Jeeps and trucks, but that little car would go wherever you pointed it. Something about its size and front wheel drive + it had decent ground clearance.

you know i saw one for 4k and in good working order i just didnt have the money
Marcos Aruca exactly!!! It would do way better
Why would Mike do that when his main aim was to sell those tyres and slag off the E30. Not sure what his personal issues are with the E30 but they certainly aren't professional. E30s deserve a lot of respect for many reasons that this Mike guy will never understand. Poor guy!
sick AF perfect for where I live
Interesting use of an e30, looks like fun!
Good to see an e30 get some love. But those tires look great. Good vid Mike!
"Over-rated"
*teeth grinding intesifies*
Throw me a bone Musto, please. You know not any old import is robust enough to take that kind of abuse. That little eta is one of the best built and most robust car of its time. the e30 overrated? really? wow... just compare it to the crap the US was producing at the time and tell that again.
I used to go up wheeler pass road to the pahrump overlook in a 2009 chevy malibu. Awesome road.
Great vid, yes it was an ad for BFG but WTF, it's free people, Thanks Mr Musto nice to see you out of the Big Muscle.
I want to get another crown vic, lift it 4-6 inches, throw some nice 33" tires on it and go out 2 trackin. Looks like fun to me!
Awesome !!!!
I always wanted to see a 2WD non-SUV go off road. looks like cars back then were a lot more off road capable than cars of today.
Just wondering what is the soundtrack for the BFG Tyre intro/attributes? I really love it a lot.
Hey, I don't mind the product placement, I just wish it had been obvious in the beginning that this video is pretty much an ad for BFG. Even if it is basically an ad, it's the best tire ad I've ever seen. ;)
+Troggie42 Did you miss the part where they said BFG approached them to advertise their new tire?
+Luke Sluder I caught that: 3 mins into an 8 min piece
+Troggie42 Read the description to the video "...You're given $2000 and a set of BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A K02 off-road tires..."
I didn't miss any of those things, however, a nice [SPONSORED CONTENT] in the title is what many other channels do (or some variant thereof) and is what should be done in the name of full disclosure.

I think you just offended a hell lot of bmw e30 fans hahaha
I live in Nevada, and those long, wide, dirt roads are the best for all sorts of hooligan foolery.
Wheeler's Pass is a great road, tiring but rewarding. Ride it myself a few times a year.
i drove all over there same place in same car and had no issues, just have to find the right paths in the roads and your good, without some bf g's
amazing
Ohh... Those old good times. My dad had 4 door 1984 318i
nice! I just got myself a '77 honda CVCC in a better condition, hopefully they have a tire that fits and relive my childhood memories of outrunners!
not too shabby of a lil beamer! nice to see it didn't blow any tires, either(?)
BMW IS THE MONSTER
This guys arrogance and dislike of the e30 honestly disgusts me. Man travels an entire desert and enjoys his time doing it and says its because of the tires because the car itself did nothing. All tires. Jesus....
this is great
I live in Vegas and I have run the Wheeler Pass trail quite a few times. they took the easy way up from Pahrump on the west side of the mountain. tires had nothing to do with this (I love BFG tires by the way).
The more unappreciated the E30 is, the cheaper I can buy them for :)
My mom had an e-30 when I was in high school. It wasn't that much fun, then again I had a 944 S2 at the time...
Pretty cool ad. I love off-roading in cars. idk why...maybe because people think you can't, just gotta b careful N take it slow.
The E30 had a ridiculous amount of ground clearance. It was actually pretty good off-road.
I did something similar with an BMW E36 and really run down Tires. And I bought it for 300 bucks, with over 315.000Km. I was pretty amazed, that the car took this really well.
sweet 8.5 minute long tire commercial
That was fun.
all hail the bmw e30
poor 30 :(
BF Good show!
SWEET
there is a black droptop with the ugly bumpers up the road for well south of $1000. the interior has had it, the rockers have holes in them and there's 210k on the clock, but it's a 5 speed and runs good + knobbly studded ice climbers = snow drifting switchback runner. it doesn't have to be immaculate, as long as somebody loves it enough to keep it on the road, that is good enough.
Take a bit of Roadkill, mix it with a bit of Dirt Everyday and ya get Mike off-roading a rattletrap BMW sporting off road tires climbing up and over a desert mountain pass! 👍🏼
Those would look great on my Versa.
I just watched a long advert and I did not mind it.
A ten minute tyre advert that I watched purely because it was presented by Mike...
That's ballsy treating an E30 like that.. I ain't mad tho :P
It's for sale on the LA craigslist right now. BMW 325e 1987 - $2600 (Culver City). Also, he clearly doesn't like e30s, so not sure why he was the one driving it....
nice ad, guys
+DININJA RONIN nice effort and interesting video if you exclude the cooments over the bmw and the constant advertisement around bf goodrich...
If you're told a car is RWD, makes 40%more torque than hp, redlines

How did you get the tire size? I’m looking for a set of these for my E30 and no tires stores sell that size

Drew Galbraith Traaack day bROOOO
Awesome!!! I think the product placement could have been a little less intrusive, but oh well, still a nice video!
