I’d say to answer the question of whether this is a “wow” camera we’d have to start by defining what makes a camera a “wow” camera. In my opinion, a “wow” camera is something that surprises you; something that greatly exceeds expectations and something that provides new features not available elsewhere in the marketplace. Clog2 has been around since 2018 or so, it is nothing new and easy to come by. Putting it in the MkII doesn’t make it wow, it makes an “well it’s about time” camera, same for the full size HDMI port, in fact most everything you list (most, not all) are features that should have already been, aren’t now and certainly don’t surprise anyone. In fact many should be in a firmware update not a new camera.
I get the sense when you say “wow”, you mean they finally fixed things that shouldn’t have been an issue in the first place. So before we can even begin to discuss a “wow” camera we need an agreement on what makes a “wow” camera. If I want all these features I could buy a Z8 that’s a year old and have 90% of them, consequently I’m not going to say “wow” just because Canon finally caught up and are now “only” a year behind Nikon and Sony.
That’s “my” opinion (“wow” that’s a lot of double quotes😂)

This camera is a Sony a1 but $2k cheaper. It should have more dynamic range than either the z8 or the a1. The r3 already has better dynamic range and the r5ii supposedly bests the r3 dynamic range.

There was NO "wow" factor, focus demos are always great, but when you have the camera, doesn't work as in the demos. Canon could do one of the following things for the next iteration if they want to have any wow factor and stop loosing clients: Global Shutter, DGO for 16+ stops dynamic range, and a RAW codec like PicoRaw. I'm thinking switching to Nikon for the Z6iii, it's RAW codec works great with Resolve, I never though I would say this, but Nikon is better now. (Edit: The switching will be painful, but Canon's disrespectful, predatory, usurious attitude and disdain for its clients, its quite evident).

    Simon,
I think that you have made the argument that the R5 Mark II is a significant improvement over the R5 as a video camera and if you buy one of the battery grips for either vertical shooting or horizontal heat control when shooting at temps of 80 degrees and above outside. And let’s be honest you really need three extra p batteries to get some of those new features for a $5000 dollar price tag. I think that is a good value relative to the current hybrid cameras that are available. However, I think that the fact that here in the USA we can buy an R5 for $2400 brand new with a 1 year Canon USA warranty is very significant for us who primarily stills shooter. The wow factor is missing for us. I am not saying that it is a dud for us stills users but it does not make me want to spend twice the price of the R5 for the R5 Mark II. I think that we needed the sensor readout speed to be greater than 1/250s for rolling shutter control for electronic shutter not the 1/160s we got which was less than the R3 ‘s 1/180s. I appreciate the upgrades that were added but not for a $5k plus cost. Remember that in printing stills photography very few can actually print better than 8 stops and those require $3000 - $5000 printers with custom profiles and very expensive paper. I have saved the money to buy my next camera for my primarily stills photography. If I can’t figure this out as a 45 year Canon user, I bet others are struggling too. I’m glad for the video improvements but this camera is not one that is making me itchy to spend the money I saved for it. Maybe the answer will be the Sony A7 v or the A1 II which should be here anytime from this Fall or Next. I have been re-working my studio lighting for several years now and those are very costly relative to my Camera bodies. I am not happy with this offering from Canon and I think that they have disappointed me as a stills photographer with both the R1 and the R5 Mark II. They are improved camera bodies that are more focused towards video shooting and have fallen behind in sensor readout speed relative to the competition. Still they have improved what they used to do but…..

@@robertatwell7615 I’ve been shooting canon for the last 16 years I’m 44 and you are spot on, I also have been saving for a good upgrade and I don’t even have the R5 been making good money with the “R” believe it or not but also been upgrading my lenses I was happy to hear about the showing of this camera but I also know it’s a pre production model still tho to me that’s not far off and everything you said is on target it’s more of a video thing than stills and if you ask me the price should be 3899.00 in this economy at the moment it would’ve made more sense to me but that’s my opinion. I might just go with the R5 and yes it came out in 2000 but it’s still a awesome camera for what it does in stills and now the price is even better at 2400 or 2600 new.

The R52 has some great tech but video wise it’s a downgrade from the R5C. All it's video modes but one are line skipped.
They just added wave forms and false colour to the photo OS. It doesn’t have CineOS.
It has a higher capacity battery but we don’t yet know how long it lasts.
We know it overheats. PETA Pixel said 8K 24p gets 30 mins and with the $600 cooling grip it extends that time to 2hrs. The cooling grip also adds fan noise to nearby mics.
Lok said 4K fine overheats in 40 mins.
It has HDMI out and the LCD stays on when an external monitor is connected but unsure yet if you have granular cine OS style control about what resolution the output is and if it’s clean or has a hud.
Also unsure if you can output to HDMI and record internally which was a thing you couldn’t do on the R5.
It has no Digital Telecine like the R5C and C70 which I find immensely useful.
It has clog2 but 16+ stops of dynamic range is ONLY in 4K fine 30p. It seems to vary in other modes.
No dual base ISO on the R52. No timecode. No shutter angle. Not Netflix certified.
    4K 24/30 (non-Fine mode) 4k60, 4k120 and all 4K S-Raw modes are line-skipped. The R5C oversamples everything.
I’m not saying the R52 isn’t a great camera but If you bought an R5C because you needed cinema features nothing has changed as far as I can see.
If you bought an R5C and constantly moaned because it didn’t have clog2 or IBIS then the R52 is the one for you.

The improvements are across the board but the improvements don't push the needle enough for first gen users to rush out to spend 5k. The camera is an evolution instead of a revolution. Therefore, gen 1 users will naturally adopt the gen 2 camera more slowly. Asking current users to spend an extra $5,000 for mostly lateral upgrades that in essence gets them caught up to the competition is an insult.
There is no doubt that new users will have an outstanding camera.
Why Canon doesnt have a high res pro body is another issue that attributes to the lack of excitement from current users.

The R5 Mark II should be more capable than the old R5C in EVERY way not just in most ways. The R5C had 8K oversampled 4K60p. I currently shoot with the 6D MK II.
I started 10 years ago with a T2i, then jumped to a 6D (I used them both with the Magic Lantern firmware which was fantastic) and finally jumped to the 6D MK II and honestly I think the 6D was better. At least the dynamic range was better. I worked in 2 continents with a single 6D, won nationa wide awards, Canon, NatGeo, etc. No need at all for "better equipment", knowledge and creativity compensate just fine for everything.
Now I'm seriously thinking if I should finally jump to the mirrorless world. At the beginning I didn't do it because there were too many downsides and my equipment was sufficient (I still edit on photoshop 2015), but now apparently those are gone. My background is wedding and street photography. I'm thinking about jumping now mainly because of the auto focus system and the cinema capabilities of the R5 II. I was thinking on buying a Sigma fp but MAYBE the R5 II is better. I'm eagerly waiting for people to have the R5 II and compare it with the Sigma fp or other cinema like cameras. To me the marketing doesn't matter, what matters is the end result taken with the equipment and the price. Years ago I thought "Surely Canon will make one mirrorless camera one day that will be better than any other brand, I'll wait" and it seems this R5 II is the peak of what is possible for Canon, and that's a little dissapointing. Can we say that the R1 will be almost equal in videoquality, like the C400 just without shutter angle and without a lot of the professional connections. But it is a 6K-RAW-LT 60fps body with a better AF than the C400 and I guess it is not overheating. This would make it to a Baby C400 and having also a very good foto camera. Because the R5MKII is overheating in the best video mode, it is not the flagship for me. It is also worse in low light, in rolling shutter and in the AF as it is without the cross pixel AF. So from the video side, the R1 is the best canon for me. For the same price, I would prefer it over the R5 MKII.

I do not know how to define a WOW camera, but let's just look at some of the improvements vs. the R5:
    1) Fully stacked BSI sensor with maximum flash sync speed 1/200 sec in electronic shutter (ES) mode.
    2) At 20 fps in ES mode with RAW precapture enabled one should have a solid 4 sec buffer (or possibly even more). My R3 at 30 fps has no pre-capture and a maximum buffer of 5 sec at 30 fps.
    3) Fully 14-bit RAW readout at high-speed. The original R5 was 12-bit RAW.
    4) Dramatically, improved AF acquisition and tracking compared to R5
    5) Eye-Control AF with 60 calculations / sec for better accuracy; no Eye-Control AF on R5
    6) 30 fps maximum frame rate vs. 20 fps
    7) Adjustable frame rates in electronic shutter mode; not possible with R5
    8) Pre-capture RAW for 0.5 sec that writes individual files; this is a huge addition.
    9) Digital hot shoe which was not available on R5
    10) Locking cover on hot shoe so it does not fall off
I did purchase the R5, but ended up returning it due to its limitations. IMO The R5 Mk2 eliminates the limitations as a photographer. I purchased the R5 Mk2.

It’s the same with the CF Type A and Type B argument. It appears that all bodies (including pre production R1) have a limitation of the raw processing pipeline no faster than 600ish MB/s. The A9iii and R1 seem to have the same buffer capacity and limitations while one is 24 MP 120 fps and the other is 24 MP 40 fps.
So in reality maybe that is why none of them utilized 4.0 chipsets because it would just add cost and not add any real world speed benefit. I could be wrong and we won’t know until production R1’s are in the wild and tested but it begs to wonder if the processing power and heat generation are what limit the processing speeds which are the bottleneck in todays cameras and not the cards themselves.

I think people are spot on when they label the R5ii a 'beta' version. It clearly was not ready for launch - incredible given they have had four years or more to bring it to market. This was a curious launch of the two best mirrorless cameras Canon can produce in what is a highly competitive sector. The content creators invited to the Phoenix Arizona launch event (e.g Petapixel) were given about two hours shooting time on the two cameras after time spent on travel and lunch. And to split the time between the R5ii and the R1 meant an absurdly limited time on each. Shooting was pretty much confined to shooting sports in a poorly lit indoor stadium because it was 100 degrees fahrenheit outside - who'd have thought? Seems someone at Canon forgot to check the weather forecast for Phoenix in July. Strange setting for a camera (R5ii) which is not principally a sports photography body. Which highlights the other curious part about this launch - combining the R5ii general purpose body and the sports centric R1 in the same launch event. Nothing more needs be said about whether the R1 is rightly described as a flagship camera body given, on many levels, it fails to match what Sony's 4 and a half year old A1 can deliver. Whatever Canon's reasoning here, clearly both cameras need further firmware development.

Without shutter angle the R1 is essentially disqualified as an option for serious filmmaking. Honestly, looking at both these cameras I'm realising the cripple hammer has been very busy carefully segmenting features to assure that filmmakers will have to choose a C400 (or R5C), and pro photographers will need an R1. As a hybrid, the R5 Mark ii is a strategically crippled option for either use case. I'd say this is a great time to explore Nikon and Sony now that Canon is up to their old tricks.

There's no doubt the mkII is a better camera. I think the disappointment, is that the original R5 was already very good, and being the same resolution, in most case scenarios, the output from both cameras is going to look very similar, or identical. That it's only for more particular needs, that the faster read-out, pre-shooting, better AF, video capabilities, is going to make a difference. However, if you take a particular case scenario, like say, birds in flight, theoretically, the mkII should be better. But the original R5 had one of the fastest readouts from a non-stacked sensor, it does shoot at 20fps and the AF is pretty good. So if you shot them side by side you'd probably get similar results, except in particular instances where the original R5 had more rolling shutter, and the fps made a difference, or the pre-shooting. In other words, the mkII is the better camera, but a lot of the time, it isn't going to get you noticeably different results. I think we're going to increasingly see this. I mean the R5 was a quantum leap ahead of the 5D mkIV on many levels. But the top mirrorless cameras are reaching a level, where they will get better, but a lot of time, will not be noticeably better than their predecessors, in either handling, use or output.

Many experts say the future is video not stills. If you look at the R5 with that knowledge then this camera totally makes sense. My impression is that many cons are from stills photographers and yes, there are not so many arguments for switching from a R5 to the R5 II in that area. Personally I like the eye controlled autofocus. I shoot wildlife and planes, currently with a R6 Mark I and a R7. So I hope this will be a huge step forward for me. However I am still thinking whether this step is worth the money. There is also the option for me to invest the money in an R6 Mark III (when it appears, which it will at some time) and a RF 200-800 (which is currently also not available in stores here). So maybe waiting and deciding later is the best option. If the R5 II is available in August then most of the season is over. No need to hurry. I also like the faster readout speed but I also understand that faster readout means higher noise. So we have to wait for some real world tests and comparisons.
My disappointments with the R5 II are easily told:
1.) Why was the HighRes-Mode removed? My expactation was that a R5 II would have an improved HighRes-Mode. AI upscaling is NOT an alternative. For example: Never ever will an AI create readable text with upscaling from an unreadable source. If you photograph a church from the inside with most details possible, then you do not want hallucinations from an AI. HighRes is about facts and reality not dreaming. Yes, maybe this will come with a firmware update as it did in the R5. However Canons firmware policy was always erratic and so I cannot rely on an assumption. Yes, HighRes has problems with moving subjects but other modes like HDR or panorama have this too. So this is not an argument.
2.) There are still no custom buttons! HEY CANON! A camera today is different from the ancient chemical film times. Today a camera has a gazillion of options and settings which sometimes must be switched over in a fraction of a second. I use backbutton focus - for good reasons. There is a back button for triggering the autofocus. Ok. But sometimes I need eye autofocus and if the camera does not detect the subject I need to instantly switch over to standard autofocus with autofocus fields. So I need two buttons, one for each autofocus mode. Good news: The camera supports the mapping of these functions to buttons. So it is possible to implement this. The bad news: You have to dispense the function of a standard button for this. I mapped one function on my R6 and R7 to the metering button which means - I have no button for metering any more. You can talk as much to a Canon Rep as you want: CANON DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THIS! Think of the face priority autofocus in a fast changing situation. You have to decide whether you need the focus on the programmed subject or on something / someone totally different. WHAT IS SO DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND that there is a real world need for some custom buttons?
Some add ons for the Canon Reps reading this article:
3.) If you want to step in into computational assisted photography, then there are better functions than AI upscaling or AI denoise, like
    a) HighRes-Mode
    b) live ND filters
    c) improve the RAW-Burst Mode so that it automatically stores the images when a configurable amount of the image changes. For example let the camera constantly take pictures from a lightning but when flash happens then store the image plus an adjustable number of images before and another adjustable number of images after the event (for video change number to seconds, for video think also of slow motion and time lapse events). Think of geysers, vulcanos, explosions, etc. for this function.
    d) Why do I have to use an app for calculating the hyperfocal distance? The camera knows all it needs for that. I just want to call a menu: "focus to the hyperfocal distance when pressing focus button".
    e) Why is "save configuration to card" and reloading not a standard function an all Canon cameras? This function is so rediculous simple it is unbelievable that this is only available to cameras with a price tag of some thousand Dollars or Euros.
    f) When shooting birds or planes esp. with the RF 2x extender the autofocus often has big problems and is also slow. There are technical reasons for that, which I understand. I can set a distance limiter of 3m to infinity on the RF 100-500. However I would like to set the distance to arbitrary from and to values in the camera. If I should planes I can set this to from 1km to infinity and the camera would not have big problems. If I shoot wildlife in a certain distance I may set it to from 30 m to 50 m. Again, this function should be very easy to implement.
    Last words:
I use Canon gear and I have no plans to switch. This post might sound like I am unhappy with Canon but I am not. I expressed my concerns and whishes and naturaly this gives focus to some criticism. However I would not own so much Canon gear if I would be unsattisfied.
Looking forward to a much brighter future with even better Canon gear!

I clicked on the pre-order link to check the price of an R5 Mark II for me here in the UK. As expected, it was $4,299 at B&H. But wait, it also said, "shipping restriction: no shipping to United Kingdom". So, what if I still want to buy one here in the UK? Using the "find a retailer" link from Canon's UK website, the various retailers want £5749 for it. For those in the US, that's $7425! Jeepers, 73% more! More than the R1! Much more!
That settles it for me then: I certainly won't buy it now, maybe not ever. I might check the grey market prices in a year or two, or consider other options. I'm certainly not burning through that kind of money for an incremental upgrade.

I ordered both the R5II and R1 - I shoot sports and often crop or use the crop factor which is why I might keep the R5II as I love the versatility of the 100-300mm 2.8, but I think I might benefit more with the R1 for the extra auto-focus capabilities... we'll see... but until I actually have them in hand it's really hard to know which one works best for ME - so I might have an R5II for sale in November... maybe not. I don't find the R5II to be such a big WOW update other than the autofocus cause I don't use video much... reason why I would prefer R1 - but the R1 isn't a big WOW either - it would have been having 45MP+ and it would have a better chance to compete with the others... The main reason I am buying a new camera is because my R5 is getting up there in mileage and want a bit more for the next 4 years... not because of WOW.

I also expect the raw files to have improved dynamic range over the R5 based on Canon’s willingness to include CLOG2. The biggest letdown for me was that the sensor real out speed appears to be slower than it’s direct competitor, the Nikon Z8, which has been out for a year and a half. Having an engineering background, the biggest wow for me is the inclusion of the same data handling pipeline as the R1. No cripple hammer there… 🤷🏻‍♂️

If the r5m2 has significantly reduced rolling shutter and the AF system of the r7, then it will indeed be a wow camera for me, someone who loves to shoot fast small birds moving in flight. I can understand how those who don’t do this type of photography may feel the r5m2 doesn’t do much new for them. But for me, 30 fps 14-bit raw files is just killer. Other than not being in a r3 body, the r5m2 is exactly (well, apart from having 2 cf-e cards) what I want. Canon would probably want another $1000 for me to get exactly what I want. I can live just fine with what I will get. I will be talking short video clips in the field and will buy the fan grip only if needed. I do use the normal grip. Hi!
I will definitely be buying this camera. With the new features it offers makes this a camera to last 10 years and still be competitive. If we look at the original Sony a9, it’s still very capable today, 7 years after it has been launched. Or look at the 1DX ii, 8 years after and it’s still a great camera.
However, I think that people are being unreasonable in their complaints, it comes to a point where, nothing Canon does is of any good… if there’s no cooling grip people complain, if they make a cooling grip people complain that now they have to buy one. They will never be happy. I honestly think that bashing Canon has become a trend and we’ve seen this with other companies: Intel, Microsoft, Pentax, OM systems and even Apple recently. But it’s also the companies fault to sleep under the shadow of their achievements, a lot of unable people reach positions of power when things are rolling and then plunge everything down the drain with their incompetence. I think Canon is being plagued by this, they need to “clean the locker room” and rebuild their brand. I mean, this Arizona event was a marketing disaster anyway you slice it and what was it for? The canon R1 and R5ii no less..
Anyway, those are my takes on all this.
    All best

Then the problem overheating and lugging etc.returned it and got a replacement but can't focused so end up sending it back.. The problem of the R5 II is too much "add ons" "gimmicks" faces input, eye tracking, noise reduction, enlarge file size, I'll buy this camera if it has Dual CF, the AF is perfect, heat dissipation is great but not sure on the battery grip probably rain water or dust could get into they could have put the window at the back because our body or face could black those incoming winds or water if shooting landscapes or etc. and "THE PRICE" of course. I always know that they can make better camera when it's in IV so R5 IV.

The R5 II looks to be the better overall camera, but 2 different card slots and non-pro body coming in at $4200 puts it close to a pro camera( Z9 , A1, or even R1). The R5 ii is quite more expensive than a A7Rv, Z8, Z6iii, or the current r5 and they are all awesome cameras. My camera is leagues behind modern cameras. In fact, modern ones are all so good, that anything would be such a wild upgrade that usability is a major distinguishing factor for myself - and the flippy vlogger type screen is such a no for me and street, nature and event photography (all just amateur).
Before anybody suggests such, having a tilty screen (or ideally a combo like the A7RV) has nothing to do with being stealthy (I'm also quite comfortable asking people for their photo); it's just so, so much quicker to snap out for a sudden opportunity, with the screen in line with the lens, and in line with my face.
For me, it's 90% of my eyes for the shot, and that's something I want to feel right, above a lot of other things.
I often shoot lower down, and the vlogger screen is a massive, massive turn off. I was so deeply hoping for some time like the A7RV or even the Z8.

Most reviewers admitted to not having enough time to intelligently make an analysis of all the cameras modes. So here we are watching people talk about a device that they have not used, laid their hands on, and many have never seen in person. Yet claim to be making consequential purchasing decision. Many are trying to basically pursuade others from purchasing something that maybe they cannot. Something young children often do. Happened with all the 5D cameras too. And we know how all that turned out in the long run. The most sold midlevel DSLR ever. The R5II is a serious upgrade to the R5 in ALL modes. At minimum its nearly a 20% increase in performance. Simply because it has a stacked sensor. Lots of headroom.

I will purchase the Mark II, but not with the urgency with which I jumped at the R5 as the R5 still exceeds my requirements. The only thing that disappoints me about this camera to an important degree is the price. As a stills only shooter I feel abandoned by all manufacturers. An awful lot of video tech is being pushed into these cameras which comes at a cost and is of no benefit. At least to me.

It's important to note that your readout speed source is incorrect. I've sent Bryan an email for that. Canon USA and Japan both list the readout speed as 40% faster than the R5. That would be 16.3ms down to 9.7ms, not down to 6.3ms. While that difference is small, it would be significant in my mind. I think the confusion comes from some sources claiming it's 60% better that the original instead of 40%.

Thanks Mike. The results to date show that very minimal rolling shutter on the R5 II. That will make a lot of people very happy.

@OrdinaryFilmmaker I'm hoping so, but this one thing has annoyed me. Effectively, if correct, 10ms is the slowest full frame stacked sensor ever created, not counting the marketing BS on the Z6III. This bugs me. This will be slower than almost every stacked sensor on the market, only beating the Olympus and marketing claims of the partially stacked Z6III. However, Canon is charging a premium for the second-rate readout.
The good news... I haven't seen anything in the way of rolling shutter yet. It's almost as if it really is reading out at 6.3ms.
Information-wise, this has been the worst release ever. Canon USA still has misrepresented specs on its R5 page that appear to be a mixture of R1 and R5II specs. The advistisement specs look good, but the detailed specs are a mess. I haven't checked the Canon Canada page, but I think the most accurate page was the Japanese page. It has more info and appears to be accurate.
