I'm in the US and have the 3ful lanshan 2. I think it's a great tent for the money. My 1 person tent is a Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo, and this is an excellent tent, more like a 1.5 person tent. It's hard to find a quality shelter at a good price point, but it can be done. Thanks for all you do ,Paul. Glad to see you enjoying life again!

I REALLY researched the 3ful lanshans and decided on the lanshan 1 plus over the pro. It's double skin and can change the inners which you can't do on the pro. Plus the pro leaves massive pools of water in moist temps. The plus is slightly bigger than the standard and enough side room for bits and a pad and bag. Very informative video though! 👌

Inspired by another of your videos where you bought the Rab tarp, I found the Rab Element 2 shelter for £70 plus £20 ground cloth. Weight is 800g combined. Excited to try it out and hoping that condensation won’t be too big a deal.
Thanks again Paul for your great channel. Always worth a watch and I love that your natural warmth always comes through. Take care, Rich

I went for the Terra-Nova Southern Cross 1.
Comparatively expensive and not the lightest but 4 season, freestanding and compact pack size.

Totally get the reticence with DCF, I was the same. Took the plunge a while back and bought a zpacks plex solo, with guys mine weighs in at 389g. I can fit me and all my gear inside quite comfortably. Found it quieter in wind than a tunnel tent like the ackto or abisko lite 1,though noisy in rain. Not a material for those that like privacy 🤣
I've found DCF to be really robust and you don't have to baby it at all though you do have to fold and roll and not stuff.
Particularly like the fact it doesn't absorb water so no retightening needed in rain and easy to dry/shake off in the morning. I had the 3FUL lanshan 1 pro and really liked it though bad for condensation.
    Keep the videos coming 👌

Great that you did this review mix. I am currently looking for a strong tent for kayaking campovers. One that can withstand high winds in pop-up rain storms. I'm in Florida where getting to land quickly for safety reasons and getting a shelter up is a very important element of kayaking. Often people who come here to camp are shocked at how wild the rainstorms are and how suddenly they appear. It's not uncommon to bank your kayak wherever you can quickly and then make your shelter until the weather clears again.

I've recently been using the DD Hammocks SuperLight A-Frame tent. It was my first experience with a trekking-pole tent and I was a bit sceptical to begin with but it really coped well with strong winds and heavy downpours, it packs down well and the inner and outer combined weight is about 1.5kg. It seems really strong and well made and is a bargain at just under £200. With the impending armageddon heatwave, I'm considering just pitching the mesh inner tent and spending a few nights camping in the back garden.

The Phoxx 1v2 is a great tent, I bought one last year (sadly there weren’t many deals at the time) managed to grab it for £80! It’s been put to work and it’s done great, quick and easy set up/takedown, I’m 6’4 and it’s a good enough tent for what you need!
I usually have a tarp set up for an area to sit if it’s wet out so I don’t need to worry about trying to sit up in the tent (it’s difficult unless you’re 5’7 and under), there isn’t s crazy amount of foot room but again it does the job it can fit a mat in with no problem! Perfect budget tent, use it for backpacking and for motorcycle camping and it hasn’t let me down yet it’s one of the two good tents I have

Just done a 10 day trip in a DD Tarp Pyramid XL tent with the big inner. Performed very well even in heavy rain and a good wind, although it’s a good Idea to run some extra guys to the loop on top of the pole in heavy wind. Not perfect, gets a fair bit of condensation, but very light and flexible.
Only really a 2/3 season tent, but good value and enough room for a lightweight tent.
Your choices are excellent by the way, good no nonsense review.

I have the Vango F10 Helium UL 2. I chose it because of the 2 doors that allow perfect airflow in hot temperatures. The color theme is great for stealth camping, it's very light weight although it still has a very durable floor fabric (70D nylon). It's a great bad weather tent because the outer fly can be staked out down to the ground, while maintaining good ventilation from both ends. The F10 Helium has been around for a very long time and is still in very high demand - I found offers for used tents that sold above the MRSP.
It packs down smaller than the Nevis 200. Of course the Helium's outer material is not as durable (15D vs 75D nylon), but that's always the case with UL materials. The Helium is still great in storms because it offers an internal tie-down system for increased rigidity of the pole.
Fun fact: The outer tent can be used without the inner. That's a feature not even the manufacturer talks about.
An interesting alternative is the new Robens Chaser 2 which came out brand new in 2022. Its inner tent is basically 100 % mesh and can be used without the outer or even with half of the outer tent - overall a very versatile system.
Downsides: very thin floor material (20D nylon), only one door, not as waterproof, 9 cm longer pack size, vestibule is ~10cm more narrow, quite drafty in cold weather since the outer tent does not reach all the way down to the ground.
IMHO the F10 Helium is the ideal all-season tent for Europe.

Thanks for giving some love to the Vango Nevis 100, I own it myself and for summer months it's a great option for not much cash. If I had the money I'd go for the other Vango you mentioned the F10. I've been using Vango tents for years and currently own 3 (Helvellyn 200, Mirage 200 and the Nevis 100) and they've never let me down.

Great video Paul. For me the key considerations are 1/ usage 2/ weather. If you are getting into hiking or wild camping, mainly in fair weather, for short periods of time, and not very frequently, then why spend a lot money ? The Lanshan 1 plus (longer version) gives you a lot of tent for the money. Same with the Alpkit soloist XL or the Cloud Up1. The OEX at the bottom of the list is still an incredible offering for the price, particularly if you only use it as a sleeping pod and don't intend to spend long periods of time inside. All the best.

Hi Paul, interesting tents. My 1st was Banshee 300 which I found good for space and was sturdy but a bit big for carrying. Then got an OEX phoxx ev1 very compact, sturdy and fairly condensation free, but too low for comfort. So I got a f10 helium, sturdy, roomy but bad for condensation. I'm not getting any more tents so just going to choose what to take when I've seen a reliable weather forecast.

I picked up an OEX Phoxx 1 for 55 quid, which is unbelievable value. It's well made, has a good hydrostatic head, will stay up in the wind and with its low profile and dark olive green colour is a good choice for stealth camping. If you don't have any money and don't mind sleeping in a coffin (that's pretty much what it feels like) this is the one to go for, but I wouldn't recommend it for multi day treks since it really is short on space inside. I also recently picked up an Alpkit Soloist which is very light indeed - no complaints so far after using it on three multi day outings.

The excellent, original Blade 100 that my dear old mum bought me a few years back when I was getting into this is sadly looking so tired, and I was considering something different since all but one of my tents is a Vango, and I have been put off lately by the terrible build quality of the family tent I bought this summer. Another thing to consider is the longevity of the tent. Hillebergs generally tend to last a lot longer than cheaper tents. Over the course of 10 years or so, you’ll probably spend the same buying the Enan compared to cheaper similar models.

I got a Vango Banshee 100, one man tent off ebay, never put into production for some reason, I love it, 1.5kg and with it being a Banshee it stands up to anything thrown at it weather wise. OK it's not particularly spacious, but it's good enough for one or two nights.

Terra Nova Starlite 1 (or 2) could be an option. Small pack size but also small in general. More a super-bivy. Good space around the head and shoulders makes it feels much bigger than it is. Also low height so it does not catch that much wind. If you are taller than 160cm, the 2 person version weights just a bit more and has much more space. Starlite 1 is for people who need a very small pack size.

Hi Paul. Great video. I personally own the OEX V2 tent so great to see it get first pick. Its sturdy as hell and currently on it's 2nd year wild camping and not gone wrong with it yet on dartmoor.
Alas you're very correct . I'm only 5ft 4' and even I struggle with the lack of room.
Correct me if I'm wrong there is 2 person version aswell but for a slightly higher price.
Random question though is would you ever try hammocks?
Friend of mine is offering his hammock and I'm intrested. Apparently the comfort level , warmth and overall experience is far better than tents.

The best lightweight tent I ever had was a Coleman Rigel X2. It was about £50, weighed less than a kilo, took seconds to put up and rolled up so small that I'd carry it when hiking, just in case. It never let any rain in and stood up to some pretty serious wind. It was single skin so suffered from condensation, but not terribly. I really wish they'd bring that design back.

My favourite tent is my 1.6kg Saunders Fellpine that I bought for 30 quid back in 1978. It’s still going but beginning to falter and I wouldn’t trust it in high winds anymore so I’m currently using a Vango Soul 200 (£30 sale at the local garden centre!) but at 2kg it’s too heavy and bulky when packed. I only use a single trekking pole so the Lanshan 1”plus” is looking good. I also have a 2.5kg Ultimate Phazor dome from the mid 80s which I use in the winter as a base camp. Thanks for the rundown.

My first tent was a fellpine. I got it when I was 16 in, ahem, 1982. I think it was 80 quid. A lot of money then.
It was used in all seasons and all over Europe but gave up the ghost about 20 years ago. UV killed it.
It was a great wee tent and a budget jetpacker. I like the design and the nearest modern one I have seen to it is the Trekkertent stealth made in Scotland.
Saunders were the dogs proverbial in their day. Innovative and great customer service.

@@BrokenBackMountains I last used my fellpine in bad weather in 2019, on Suilven, with high winds and continuous light rain. The fabric was fine although the seams were leaking but the neoprene pegging loops were all cracking and a couple gave way. There are fixed pegging loops too but I prefer the flex of neoprene. I could replace the neoprene loops with short bungee cords I guess, and buy some seam sealant. But the Lanshan 1 is lighter and has a smaller packsize so, if I'm spending money, a new tent wins over patching the old one.

I have an MSR Elixr 2 it’s 2.2kg and yeah a bit heavy but I love the extra space. However the elixr 1 but at around £250 complete with footprint it is in my opinion a good buy. You can also ditch the inner and use just the fly and foot print which will bring the weight down. As I said though just my opinion.

My current backpacking tent is a North Face Stormbreak 2. It's about 1.8kg, it's enormous inside, and it's absolutely bombproof in high winds. The poles are just solid. It pitches inner first which I know people don't like, but it makes it so easy to set up. My only criticism is that it doesn't pack down as small as I'd like.
Thanks for another great vid, by the way.

I have the Naturehike Cloudup-1 and IMO it's a good tent for the money, although the price has crept up a bit since I got it (as all prices have over the last 2 years). Make sure you get the revised version though as the original had no internal pockets or light hook in the inner, and the waterproof rating was lower. Only complaint I'd have is I'd have preferred side opening rather than end opening.

    • @childofthesun32

Have you tried pitching it bad wind?
I've heard if you angle it right, and the wind is only coming one way, then it'll be mostly fine. But I had a bad day where the wind kept changing direction and I couldn't even get the tent up. I had to pack it away and sleep in my mate's Phoxx II with him.
I still love the tent though. I just wish it wasn't so much like a big 'sail' in the wind.

@@lweleven3423 I do find that too. It feels a little clunky getting out of it.
What I've started doing, when using it, is having a tarpaulin as groundsheet, and I have a little extra, poking out the front (Which I'll roll under the tent, so that it doesn't catch any rain), but when I'm climbing in and out of the tent, I roll the groundsheet out, and use it as a little 'porch' for crawling out onto, rather than clumsily trying to climb out of it the normal way.

I have the first tent shown, and the only problems that there are is that its annoying to put up in the rain, and its short. Personally im pretty young and only like 5'5 so its all fine for me, but anybody taller or wider will definitely struggle. Its very water proof, as long as you put it up before it rains as it is inner sheet first, as the poles are on the inner sheet
