Patty Griffin: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Patty Griffin has always had a gift for locating a song's nerve endings; for surveying her subject matter and identifying the most efficient possible pathways to listeners' emotions. Her warm, wise voice is comforting, inviting and relatable, even - perhaps especially - as she tackles weighty subjects like middle age and the death of a parent.
The memory of Griffin's father hangs over her recent seventh album, American Kid, but the singer remains far too resourceful to make it a collection of navel-gazing dirges about mortality. In sampling a few of the record's many highlights at the NPR Music offices, she takes care to balance the exquisite mourning of "Faithful Son" - and the sweetly somber "That Kind of Lonely," which Griffin describes as "a song about finally letting go of your delayed adolescence" - by closing her set with the playfully bawdy, kindly celebratory "Get Ready Marie." Inspired by a favorite photo of her grandparents, the song finds Griffin viewing two complicated lives with the generous, hopeful eye she's been casting on her subjects for three fruitful decades now. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

Stand up and take notice... in a world of throw away, bubblegum, overdubbed, voice synthed so called music ... THIS is what a REAL ARTIST looks like. ANYTHING performed by this woman will knock you down with it's imagery and the raw emotional power of her voice. So many years so many albums and she still amazes me.
Adore her
Amen.
I so agree. I can't get enough of her music. And I'm going to see her in July with The Chicks. Can't wait.
Just saw her at Levon’s. She lost much but on the path to gain much more. Blessed to hear her ride.
shut up boomer
Arguably one of the finest singer/songwriters in America today. We love you, Patty.
"Arguably"??
She’s a total gem😊
Yes, although I wrote many of her beautiful renders…
@@ronaldjaybelin520 what are you talking about? You are not listed as a writer on any of her albums.
I was recently driving over the San Francisco bay bridge on my way home and Patty Griffin came on the radio. I had never heard her before. I am a 67 year old man and I literally broke into tears hearing her voice. How have I gotten this far through life without having heard her sing before...
Better late then not at all... her first album was just her and an acoustic guitar... sooooo raw and amazing AND IT STILL holds up against anything out there today.
Her voice is like no other, sounds like she is singing from a hundred years ago.
This was me driving home yesterday, hearing Heavenly Day and bawling. How did I get to be this old before discovering Patty Griffin...
Patty is blessed with a gift that will grip your heart and squeeze. She has the voice of 1000’s of angels in my head.
Music like this usually appears when you’re ready to receive it 💜
This is one of the best performances on Tiny Desk. Patty is the most underrated folk singers there has ever been.
Thanks
Completely agree. She is the ultimate. I adore her so much!
My granddaughter grew up listening to Patty Griffin with me; something we shared together. We would sing her songs together and make memories that will last her lifetime. My granddaughter is a vocal major now and when she sang a Patty Griffin song for a formal event recently, well, it just doesn't get better than that, thank you Patty Griffin.
the third song is priceless. I remember seeing patty on landsdownde street in Boston I was a manager of the other side café and a huge fan of her music, as we all were. but this show I went to alone I had a few bourbons and stumbled upon an older couple in he middle of the floor. I promptly told them patty griffin was my favorite artist of all time, only to be replied with "well im glad cause she's our daughter. so we drank and hugged and sang the whole night but somewhere along the way got separated. good job Griffins. good fucking job. what a national treasure you gave us.

Liam, I adore this story so much
She is fantastic. I saw her at the Boston Folk Festival back when I worked at WUMB. Many of the other artists at that festival gathered to hear her perform.
What a wonderful story. Thanks for sharing she is a rare, roughly cut gem. Just perfect!
One of the most gifted singer songwriters alive. Love you Patty for all the inspiration

Patty Griffin is a singer songwriter extraordinaire. She is sprinkles magic on the world.
Patty and her guitar is just the best sound. Her musicians are doing the best they can.
Been listening to Patty for over 20+years. She’s still best I’ve ever heard!😍✌️
She was recently in Columbia MO for a show and I was blown away by her.
How am I just discovering this glorious artist? "Let Him Fly" appeared in a Spotify radio mix and the song touched me like few songs do today. She is amazing.
You are in for treat brother! I wish I can hear her voice again for the first time!
Enjoy my friend.
Try “Crying over”, “Nobody’s crying”, and “Florida” then, you won’t be sorry! Same vibes.
I just discovered her last night. I had never heard of her before.
When I leave my body........I want to hear Patty Griffin and Paula Cole as I close my eyes............what beautiful and talented spirits.
That's a beautiful thought
May it be so..in a hundred years...if you wish it so.
No one can bring me to tears like that girl - no one
Wow
❤️❤️
Me too
this woman is my hero...she is absolutely brillianttttt, passionate, insightful, effervescent, mysterious, and red-headed. who could ask for more???
I’ve listened to this lady for over 15 years, every time she sings it is a complete joy to listen. One of the THE GREATEST singer songwriters ever. Just love her😊
I've seen her front row by blind luck and heavenly gift 9 times. I've loved and treasured a number of musical artists in my lifetime, but I sense, strongly, in these my final years, when all is sung and done, she may well be the voice that has spoken most truly for my sense of this world, this grey, sorrowful world where honest effort and diligent faithfulness only get you so far and that the race to win inside may never be won, never be won at all but only run honestly to its preordained conclusion. Perhaps there's a happiness in the resignation to fate and endings foretold before any of us managed to get born.
Great comment!! My daughter introduced her to me and I am forever grateful
It is one of her greatest gifts to you - likely rivaling nearly anything you've given her except for life itself.
Your prose tells me that you are probably proficient at spinning a lyric yourself.
bless your heart
I agree with every single world you said. I come back to her every time I need to find myself again. She is sublime.
Amazing songwriter with a voice that goes straight to the heart.
An American treasure-and one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the modern era. I wish more people knew about this great artist.
Thanks
@@pattygriffin3232 Omigosh, thank YOU! Your music has brought so much goodness into my life. Hope to see you live someday when we get past the pandemic. May you and yours be safe.
I could just close my eyes and listen to this all day.
What an amazing soul.
Patty Griffin, you're a legend.
Thanks
Discovering an artist who resonates is one of life's great pleasures
Extremely plesant singer that hits the spot musicaly speaking!
No argument needed, she sings from the heart and is simply an incredible talent...Love her 😎
Patty Griffin is indeed a Treasure. She got me through some intense moments in my life in the year after the “Mad Mission” album came out. I will never forget her show in Boulder with the Blind Boys, or the many amazing shows at The Ark in Ann Arbor. I recall vividly the day she released Children Running Through album - a teal gem. NPR interviewed her and she sang the Trapeze Circus lady song. There is more wisdom in the average Patty Griffin song than in in your average Old Testament Proverb or Greek Myth. Thank you Patty for singing like an angel all these years🌈
well said!
I love artists that have their own sound. It takes about two seconds to know it’s Patty.
17 years ago i was introduced to this woman's music and i have been in love with her voice ever since. thank you, patty.
There is no more powerful way to share your soul than through story telling. Patty's story telling casted through her God given angelic voice poised with ineffable colors and beauty, is second to none. I feel the same as what many have shared, great songs to sing when I leave the world.
She has many, MANY great songs of hers to choose, my the dark intensity of "Faithful Son" was a smart move in grabbing the attention of new listeners. God Bless this woman and her work.
SHE IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE!!!! THANK YOU TINY DESK!!!!!
❤️❤️
I saw Patty Griffin play at the Hatch Shell in Boston, MA about 25 (?) years ago.......absolutely amazing!! Such beauty !!
She is still knocking them out of the park!! The number of times I have been moved and dazzled by her powerful talents. Whew!!!
Discovered her recently, she came up on a Deezer playlist. Great voice, great songs!
A voice with incredible depth ...like the deep mysterious sea ...Love her and her songs that dance around that stunning voice .x
chills up the spine - this woman sings with her soul
So startling to sit listening to her, absolutely consumed and entranced, then she says "thanks for having us here" like a dinner guest.
WHERE does that voice COME from?!?!
Thank our lucky stars for Patty Griffin. No one has moved me like this.
Over 13 albums and Patty has not released a duff song! What a wonderful talent!Seen her 9 times in the UK and never tire of her music, love you Patty Griffin X
Just saw Patty when she came to Waterville Maine! Absolutely incredible show! I adore her so much

Finally. I've been waiting forever for Patty Griffin to be on Tiny Desk, and the wait was so worth it.
Just discovered Patty Griffin in Baton Rouge on Mother's Day 2018 (?). Then saw her in Dallas, Martha's Vineyard . . . She's incredible. I must have been in a hole somewhere before . . .

Absolutely incredible. My heart rests.
❤️❤️
I’m right there with you ❤️
Patty owns the Tiny Desk Concert series. She turns that place into a magical land of wonder.
Hi guys, I'm french from Paris and ............ that really talks to me. She's great. Thank you for sharing.
Not even my most favorite bands can bring out the emotion that she does every time I listen to anything she does.
So many singers of today could never stand there and sing without all of the enhancements added in the studio. This performance sounds so much like the recording it just showcases her talent. A truly gifted artist
We
With all due respects Patty Griffen is a singer-songwriter/ musician of today. Her guitar playing, voice, creativity and presentation are excellent and she looks really well. It's simply where you want to be when you see and hear singer-songwriters/musicians performing.
Patty's poetic poise transports me into every story she tells. This woman is tapped into a sensitivity of song that few musicians transcend; beauty of spirit and poignant turn of phrase. God is a wild old dog is about as good as a song gets.
listening from my home of old town maine.
From the heart, no frills Americana, like only Patty can deliver. Love this stuff.
I happened upon this TDC by sheer chance , surfing NPR . So glad I did . Patti Griffin is a treasure , a true star . Beautiful voice that sings from the heart . . . and touches mine . Good fortune, Girl . George Lewis, Sr.
After listening to her album all weekend, this may be her best and most complete. If you have never seen her before in concert, it is a bucket lister.
I saw her perform about 20 years ago in Grand Rapids, MI. I'm still stunned by her performance.
Thanks
I have always loved her, driving eight hours once to see her. She is so vulnerable like the rest of us. Honest to her roots unlike most of us.
I love Patty, every album is so different and yet you know it is Patty Griffin. :)
❤️
15 years an more and i love her music still ...thanks
What a writer, what a voice!!
No matter what happens in my life I’m just grateful to exist in a world where this magical creature also exists. ✨
💛
That Kinda Lonely, one of my favorite Patty Griffin songs, along with Let Him Fly. Beautifully sung from the heart.
Thank you NPR for opening my ears to another outstanding musician. I've heard of Patty Griffin for many years but never listened to her music. Wow, I love her sound.
Thanks
💘
Nothing but awesome in every capacity, songwriter, singer, person, woman.
The sound of her music and her voice sound very lovely together.
Thanks
That time I saw Patty Griffin in a little dive bar with five other people there. She was so amazing.
I’m flying to Savannah to see her next Friday. I’m already crying 🥹 I love her so much

At 61 years old, I doubt I will live to see a better singer/song writer than Patty. Her delivery has more emotional impact than any other performer I've seen in my lifetime. Though she didn't play it here, her song Nobody's Cryin is to this day the only song I cannot listen to with other people because of the overwhelming emotional response it brings. It's a very personal song for me. Simply reading the lyrics to this verse shatters me to pieces:
May you dream you are dreaming in a warm soft bed
And may the voices inside you that fill you with dread
Make the sounds of thousands of angels instead
Tonight where you might be laying your head
LIttle singer with a huge heart. Going to see her in Auckland, New Zealand soon. I love the way the Dixie Chicks show her much-deserved respect. A gem of a session.
Yes!
So happy she did this. Greatness

When visiting NYC I got to see Patty Griffin live on the David Letterman Show in 2007. She sang "Burgundy Shoes." The zookeeper from Columbus Ohio was there, too, with some ostriches (tho he and Patty weren't up there at the same time LOL). It was a fun show. Patty was enchanting!

I was at the Deja Vu Lounge in New Orleans on Dauphine and Conti with an ex. At a table was a student/ dancer...just the 3 of us in the bar and the girl studying was playing something INSANELY GOOD on the jukebox and I had to ask. I walked over to her and asked who we were listening to....She said "Oh that's Patty Griffin, she's great!!"
She's been in my ears ever since!
I KNEW that was Craig Ross on bass. God, listened to Dead Spy Report all through my teens. So cool. Love Patty too, of course.
She is a joy to listen to, sweet music for the soul!
Thanks
Awesome.. with thanks for this kind talent.
Patty, you have helped me to add meaning to my life and peace to my soul. My life has been made richer because of your words and music. Thank you.
"Go Where ever You Want To Go" is an amazing song. As an old jarhead, to me that song honors the memory of all the brave men & women who never made it home, and brings healing for all the Gold Star families. Thank you.
Thank you for your service. It is always appreciated and never forgotten.
this is great. I love her song. thank you give me chance to watch it.
You Welcome
National treasure..Thanks Patty, thanks NPR
Didn't think I would like this as much as I did. Patty has some soul in her songs. I'll definitely look for more of her songs.

*WoW,super Music !!!!* Many greetings from Germany.
One of my all time favorite artists.
I just love Patty. Great songsmith
Patty is what happens when talent flows unfettered in the direction of its particular brilliance.
Yes
I lived in Nashville the same time Patty did and saw her many times at local clubs........had a chance to meet and photograph her........what an angel.
Wow
Thanks
Ughhhhh... amazing as always. Bowery Ballroom 1998. That Voice.
Man o man she is so great.
What a set of pipes and an amazing songwriter as well!
Thanks
When I need to cry, she gets me there.
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. Incredible. She was always a fringe artist for me, not even in my library. That will change now. She's now in with Slaid Cleaves, Jackson Browne, Diana Jones, etc.
Thanks
The first time I heard Patty sing Top Of The World? I had to sit down and cry.

She’s a magnificent musician
I remember going to see my brother's college roommate's sister's band play at a bar in Orono Maine in the early 80's. Patty and the Executives.
I was there. That's my little paper cup on the desk in front of her. I died a thousand times.
bronyr Okay, please share how you got to attend this! And, where was it? Looks like an awesome little record store.
bronyr Ohhh......you are lucky
Abby Taylor
Hi Abby, we live in DC and the guy who runs Tiny Desk is a buddy. We just got lucky. It was at the NPR studios. Patty was as kind and charismatic as she appears to be.
bronyr she should be a household name. She’s an absolute delight.
I’ve been in awe of her since her first album. Her songs. Her playing. And her own story. Only in America !
That was a nice cup, will you get another?
love the last song.
Beautiful set, beautifully described too.
she's so lovely
Patty's songs are the earth and all it's goodness....the god's Shine down...
Thanx Patty! Great music at the tiny desk! Keep on singing! Cheers, BEATKIDS, Berlin Germany

going to add her to my list & put her at the top
@basenjimusic you really should explore her whole back catalog. I think the live album is a good place to start. Living with Ghosts or 1000 Kisses are nice introductions too.
