  • Cardiac Ablation
How serious is heart ablation surgery?
What are the risks and side effects? Ablation has serious risks, although they are rare. They include stroke and death. If ablation doesn't work the first time, you may need to have it done again.
What is the life expectancy after an ablation?
After a single ablation procedure, arrhythmia-free survival rates were 40%, 37%, and 29% at one, two, and five years. Most recurrences occurred within the first six months, while arrhythmias recurred in 10 of 36 patients who maintained sinus rhythm for at least one year.
How long does it take to recover from a cardiac ablation?
If you have catheter ablation, you'll likely feel ready to return to work a day or two after your procedure. If your job requires physical labor, you may need a few extra days before returning to work. After catheter ablation, you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for at least three days.
    Is cardiac ablation painful?
Most people do not feel pain during the procedure. You may sense mild discomfort in your chest. After the ablation is over, your doctor will remove the guide wire and catheters from your chest.

I’m having my procedure done in a couple of days. I currently feel the same way. It’s exhausting frequently dealing with an aggressive and increased heart rate or palpitations. You don’t know when they will start, how long they will last, or if you’re going to pass out. It has made me rather anxious. How was your experience during the procedure? Was it painful, or stressful?

My wife has a-fib which got progressively worse to where she had issues multiple times per week. She had atrial ablation done about 4 years ago. Doc told us going in that they err on the side of ablating as few areas as possible, allow the heart to heal for 6-9 months, reevaluate and decide if they need to go back for a little touch up. She did need the 2nd procedure 9 months after the first. I’m happy to say she hasn’t had any issues since having the procedures done.

I had this done in June 2023, of course i was terrified. But it was great, the surgery took 3 hours, but it seemed like 10 seconds to me. NO pain afterward, shortness of breath was gone, exhaustion was gone and no more chest pain. i returned to work after only 1 week and have been doing great since. If you have to have this surgery, its normal to be frightened because you dont know what to expect. its a truly amazing procedure and i wouldn't hesitate a second if i have to do it again.

I've been on meds(Eliquis and Metropol as well as assorted beta-blockers) for several years to control afib. I've as had cardio-conversion. The conversion lasted abt 3 weeks. I will be undergoing a convergence procedure on Feb 5. The 1st part will consist of doing ablation on the exterior of the heart as well as placing a clip on the right atrial appendage to reduce/prevent stroke. The 2nd part will consist of doing ablation on the interior of the heart 6-8 weeks after the 1st part. Praying this will do away with the afib and get me off the meds. Really ready to breath normally, be rested and get on with life!

If the ablation is done on the right side of the heart you will likely have conscious sedation and are unlikely to remember anything. I actually awoke during mine and was asking questions. They quickly put me back under. But I can say that while conscious, I felt calm and fascinated watching the screens. I could feel the ablation as a burning sensation, but it was not overwhelming. When I asked if that was what I was feeling, that they put me back out. I’m sure there was some frantic nonverbal communication going on between the cardiologist and the person handling anesthesia.
If you ablation is on the left side, it is a much bigger deal. You will be under general anesthesia and intubated. I have had both sides done.
My AFib and flutter came back. I am now taking the drug Dofetilide, and it has worked great. The drawback is you must be hospitalized for three days when you start this drug for safety reasons. My heart went back into sinus rhythm after the second pill and has stayed that way for a year and a half.
I’m sure my experience of waking is extremely unusual. It was interesting but not something to worry about. One man’s experience.

This could be a sign of or type of a fib. I had a skipped beat for a couple of years after some heart surgery. It became worse one day I noticed I had difficulty breathing like tiredness on walks. That's about the time it became A flutter. Had a n episode shortly after . Heart racing and couldnt breathe . For a minute . And then recovered went to ER . .and now the want to do ablation . You do want to treat your skipped beats but usually it turns into a fib. My advice is to do your best to bring your blood pressure to normal if it is high it may seem impossible . But. I found that is the main cause. Stop drinking alcohol ,walk, eat light , stop smoking if you do . And do deep breathing a few times a day to open your lungs . It will take some time but you can lower your blood pressure

I would really dread this as I'm very active and do some extreme sports. Anyone here suffered this? Metoprelol helps keep in check but would like it gone.
